This study investigates the potential relationships between childhood maltreatment, borderline personality features, coping, and problematic pornography use. The aim is to explore these associations through correlational analyses, a hierarchical multiple regression, and a path analysis, using data collected via an online survey. The goal is to improve the understanding of the psychological mechanisms that may link adverse childhood experiences to problematic pornography use in adulthood, particularly through the mediating roles of personality traits and coping. The findings may contribute to a deeper understanding of risk factors for problematic pornography use, which might be useful for future prevention and intervention efforts.

We will extract and synthesize information on the theoretical frameworks, constructs assessed, psychometric properties, and contexts of use for each identified instrument. Expected outcomes include a comprehensive mapping of available tools, a critical appraisal of their psychometric robustness, and identification of conceptual and methodological gaps in the literature. Findings are expected to inform research, clinical assessment practices, and public policy by promoting the use of evidence-based and theoretically sound instruments.

In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled a plan for Chinese economic expansion known as the One Road One Belt plan. This modern day silk road would connect the PRC via seaport to the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean in one route, and from Chinas coast through the South China Sea to the South Pacific in the other. This thesis assesses the Chinese One Road One Belt economic plan through the historic imperial experiences of Great Britain in the nineteenth-century, Japan in the mid-twentieth century, and the United States in the latter half of the twentieth-century. The mixed methods approachusing historical sources and quantitative data setsincreases the likelihood of accuracy. Similar to the way Alfred Thayer Mahan used conditions to assess the sea power of nations, this analysis will apply three general conditions, further broken down into eight specific categories, to assess the likelihood of Chinese success. The categories include external security and the need for natural resources, which comprise the motives for expansion condition; period of industrialization, level of nationalism, and foreign policy outlook make up the form of empire condition; and internal stability, culture clash, and social inequality, make up the sustainment of empire condition. While each of these conditions and categories alone do not necessarily provide clear insight into the likely success or failure of an expansionist nation, the synthesis of the eight reveals patterns and relationships that explain why a nations expansion fails. The results show that China is on a trajectory similar to that of Japan, which suggests an eventual collapse of their imperial ambitions and strategic openings for the United States diplomatically and economically.

Exploring the Interplay of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Symptoms with Compulsive Sexual Behavior and Problematic Pornography Use: An Undirected and Bayesian Network Analysis Approach

Project working title: The effects of pornography use frequency, motivations, and problematic use on sexual wellbeing: A dyadic longitudinal study with adult couples

To help the Air Force understand the implications of the Internet, social media, and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) for Airmen s social support networks, mental health, suicide prevention programs, and outreach, RAND conducted a survey of 3,479 active-duty, guard, and reserve Airmen in 2012. Using survey responses weighted to represent the gender, age group, component and officer/enlisted composition of the force, RAND found that 6 percent of the sample scored on the negative end of the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2) (Caplan, 2010, pp. 1089 1097). This 15-item scale measures indicators of undesirable behavior such as turning to the Internet when feeling down or lonely, thinking obsessively about going online, having difficulty controlling Internet use, and experiencing adverse life events due to Internet use. Among Airmen, negative GPIUS2 scores were significantly correlated with poor self-rated mental health, depressed mood, and loneliness. If the survey results are representative, more than 30,000 Airmen may be struggling with unhealthy patterns of Internet use. These findings are documented in a previous RAND report, entitled, Information and Communication Technologies To Promote Social And Psychological Well- Being In The Air Force: A 2012 Survey Of Airmen (Miller, Martin, Yeung, Trujillo, and Timmer, 2014). This report documents follow-on research providing the Air Force with a more in-depth review of the current state of knowledge on problematic Internet use (PIU), with special attention to populations and considerations most relevant for the military population and setting. It also draws implications for military leaders interested in potentially identifying, tracking, treating, or learning more about PIU within their organization. This report is written for both military and general readers. Subject-matter expertise is not required.

Problematic smartphone and social media use have been a debated topic in psychology and related disciplines for at least a decade now, with some researchers even seeking to classify it as a non-substance bound addiction. One of the key issues in this debate is the accurate measurement of actual social media usage. Self-reports tend to be inaccurate, while measuring actual behavior through app tracking is complicated and expensive for most clinicians and social scientists. In this study, we provide a unique insight into the self-perception of smartphone and social media users through OneSec – a commercial app where people can restrict their own app usage on a voluntary basis. First, data from the app and a pre- and postsurvey allow us to investigate which apps people with self-indicated problematic social media consumption use with which frequency and at which times of day. Second, we will investigate if these metrics for actual behavior correlate with users subjectively perceived problematic usage. Third, we investigate which usage patterns result in a perceived improvement of problematic social media usage. Results can on the one hand contribute to our understanding of which apps are most strongly related to (self-perceived) problematic use, and on the other hand help to understand the relationship between actual behavior and self-perceptions of problematic smartphone use.

This study aims to assess whether self-esteem mediates the link between problematic peer relations and disordered eating behaviors in adolescent males and females. We will conduct secondary data analyses, using the data of the Mental Health & Health Habits project.

This study aims to identify research priorities to better understand and reduce the individual, social, and economic burden of problematic internet use (PUI) on a global level. Our results will inform the researcher community about the most striking questions in the field of PUI that should be addressed in the next 10 years (2026-2035). Research priorities set by a wide community of experts and individuals with lived experience should also be helpful for policymakers, decision-makers, funding organisations, and those working in treatment and prevention. Possible domains of research include (1) research to understand PUI, its epidemiologic characteristics, risk and protective factors, (2) assess the burden, and its determinants; (3) research to improve the performance of existing preventative and treatment measures (including improving the accessibility and evaluation of existing interventions); (4) research to develop new capacities to reduce the burden. To achieve this, we are engaging a diverse group of PUI researchers, PUI health professionals, and individuals with lived experience of PUI. Their expertise, experiences, and insights will help identify the most pressing research questions that should be prioritised over the next decade. By gathering insights from a broad community, we aim to provide valuable guidance to researchers while also informing policymakers, decision-makers, funding organisations, and professionals working in treatment and prevention.

This randomised control study will apply a self-compassionate training methodology used previously in other psychology domains (Neff, 2011; Sirois, 2019) to a sample of excessive drinkers (>14 units per week; NHS, 2017) who are attempting to cut-down their alcohol intake. Derived from theory set out by Marlatt & Gordon's (1985) Cognitive-Relapse Prevention Model and Collins & Lapp (1991) subsequent Limit Violation Effect, the present study aims to explore whether training self-compassion in heavy drinkers will facilitate a more adaptive cognitive an emotional response to a self-imposed limit violation. Specifically, whether an increase in self-compassionate responding to an alcohol limit violation will have an effect on drink refusal self-efficacy and motivation to drink to cope with negative affective states - factors of which have been identified as key antecedents to the Limit Violation Effect, whereby an increase in alcohol consumption is induced following the violation of a self-imposed limit. Using an intention to treat approach, participants will be randomly assigned to two conditions and instructed to recall a past limit violation regularly over the course of a week, with those in the experimental condition then reframing this self-compassionately, and those in the active control condition reporting the 'facts only' of the recalled event. Reporting of increases in self-compassionate responding and drink-refusal self efficacy, and decreases in motivation to drink to cope with negative affective states following this experimental procedure will indicate higher self-compassion to have the potential to help people successfully reduce their alcohol intake, and thus widespread implications for integrating self-compassionate approaches into interventions for problematic alcohol users.

We aim to determine the effectiveness of mobile app-based self-guided psychological interventions for craving and lapse risk reduction in problematic behaviors and substance use. Impact of media emotion regulation on problematic media use

In the research literature, “Problematic social media use” or “Social media addiction” have often been assessed by using the diagnostic criteria for other types of addiction or rewording the criteria in scales gauging other types of addiction (Andreassen, Torsheim, Brunborg, & Pallesen, 2012; Van den Eijnden, Lemmens, & Valkenburg, 2016). This practice assumes that social media use can become an addiction, in line with Substance use disorder or Gambling disorder. Similar methods were used when creating scales to measure Internet gaming disorder, where some of the earlier scales consisted of reworded items from Gambling disorder, as these were thought to be similar constructs. However, this resulted in inflated prevalence numbers as video games and gambling differs in some respects (Ferguson, Coulson, & Barnett, 2011). The scales were therefore adjusted to reflect Internet gaming disorder more specifically. Current research on problematic social media use makes similar assumptions as the assumptions in early research on Internet Gaming Disorder and will therefor risk inflating prevalence numbers and dilute the observed associations with potential risk factors and potential consequences of social media use. Consequently, there is a need for research on problematic social media use to take a step back and reconsider the conceptualization and measurement of this concept. This project’s questionnaire is based on youth input on specific behaviors, motivations, and attitudes they experience related to social media use. This enables the current project to explore different patterns of social media use that may be associated with poor mental health without predefining problematic social media use. Furthermore, current conceptualization and measurement has ignored earlier critiques of specific addiction criteria used in assessment of behavior addictions. Among them is the escape criteria, which consist of using the substance or activity to escape from negative thoughts, feelings, or real-life problems. It has been questioned if this criterion is good at predicting problematic behavior in other behavioral addictions (e.g. Rehbein, Kliem, Baier, Mößle, & Petry, 2015), and recently also for problematic use of social media (Verseillié, Laconi, Castro-Calvo, & Chabrol, 2021). This project aims to generate more in-depth knowledge about potential problematic social media use and to investigate the role of the escape criterion. The present project will utilize data from a two-wave questionnaire survey of secondary school pupils. WE are testing a new response style of "Gist" or "skimming items" that is present primarily in crowdsourcing data. We argue that this style of responding, out of fear of work being rejected, leads to unusually high correlations among related constructs because the overall valence of the item is captured (e.g., antisocial) but the nuance is lost (e.g., strategic antisocial).

This article deals with problematic approach to English learning and teaching due to misleading conception on the nature of English and on the process of acquiring it as well as the clues to the issues. The clues are: Firstly, English is not more difficult than any other languages, including Indonesian language, "Bahasa Indonesia". Secondly, there are two approaches that need considering in English instruction, grammar free and strict grammar approaches. The former is highly recommended for early age instruction and beginners whereas the latter is recommended for instruction for specific purposes. However the two approaches should collaborate and their applications should be based on needs analysis. Thirdly, Conflicting conception on whether L1 and L2 are the same processes should not deter the strategy of how language is acquired naturally. When proper conception on the nature of English is attained and it is approached properly, English subject is not burdensome and needs not be eliminated from Primary School curriculum, and there is no need to reduce time allotment for the subject in Senior High School as stipulated in Indonesian English curriculum amendment.

Exercise is generally associated with physical and psychological health benefits, but many individuals engage in maladaptive exercise (e.g., compulsive or addictive in nature). Although maladaptive exercise is common across the human condition, it is difficult to define and exercise scales vary in respect to what they emphasize. Assuming homogeneity in scales that may measure very different constructs contributes to a lack of consensus in etiological models of maladaptive exercise behavior and falls short in informing screening and prevention efforts. The current study used a Jaccard Index to analyze and quantify the content overlap of self-report scales commonly used to measure maladaptive exercise. We focus on the assessment of exercise in the context of eating pathology.

In this research, students' scientific attitude, computer anxiety, educational use of the Internet, academic achievement, and problematic use of the Internet are analyzed based on different variables (gender, parents' educational level and daily access to the Internet). The research group involves 361 students from two middle schools which are located in the center of Konya. The "general survey method" is adopted in the research. In accordance with the purpose of the study, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, ANOVA (variance) are employed in the study. A total of four scales are implemented. These four scales include a total of 13 sub-dimensions. The scores from these scales and their subscales are studied in terms of various variables. In the research, students' scientific attitude, computer anxiety, educational use of the Internet, the problematic Internet use and academic achievement (gender, parent educational level, and daily access to the Internet) are investigated based on various variables and some significant relations are found.

This study is a qualitative research included 20 Jordanian senior level students of the English department at the University of Al- Hussein Bin Talal . A list of 14 Arabic Jordanian southern Bedouin idioms used in this study. The participants were asked to translate these 14 idioms. These 14 idioms were asked to be translated by the 20 participants. Then, their answers were collected and analyzed and categorized into different types of translations (lateral translation, meaning translation, irrelevant translation, no translation at all) according to (Alousque 2009; Basalamah 2010; Bani Abdo 2016; Alkhuli 2009; Abbasi 2012; Newmark 1981; Meryem 2009; Al-Shawi 2012; and Yowelly and Lataiwish 2000 ) . The test was located at the University of Al- Hussein Bin Talal which is located at the southern part of Jordan.   The findings reveal that cultural differences between both languages (Arabic and English) consider as the main obstacles which face the English students’ major when they translate Arabic Jordanian southern Bedouin idioms into English language. The appropriate pragmatic and semantic equivalents were also difficult to be found in the target language (English) by the 20 participants. Finally, the stylistics issues also are crucial in translating Jordanian idioms into English language.

This study explores the problems facing English Language and Literature students at Al- Hussein Bin Talal University in translating Arabic language idioms used by Arabic Jordanian Bedouin speakers into English. This study is a qualitative research included 20 Jordanian senior level students of the English department at the University of Al- Hussein Bin Talal . A list of 14 Arabic Jordanian southern Bedouin idioms used in this study. The participants were asked to translate these 14 idioms. These 14 idioms were asked to be translated by the 20 participants. Then, their answers were collected and analyzed and categorized into different types of translations (lateral translation, meaning translation, irrelevant translation, no translation at all) according to (Alousque 2009; Basalamah 2010; Bani Abdo 2016; Alkhuli 2009; Abbasi 2012; Newmark 1981; Meryem 2009; Al-Shawi 2012; and Yowelly and Lataiwish 2000 ) . The test was located at the University of Al- Hussein Bin Talal which is located at the southern part of Jordan.   The findings reveal that cultural differences between both languages (Arabic and English) consider as the main obstacles which face the English students’ major when they translate Arabic Jordanian southern Bedouin idioms into English language. The appropriate pragmatic and semantic equivalents were also difficult to be found in the target language (English) by the 20 participants. Finally, the stylistics issues also are crucial in translating Jordanian idioms into English language.

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between teachers' experience and their perceptions of and reactions to problematic classroom situations. The purpose was to assist teacher educators to more adequately train beginning teachers who then would be better prepared to deal with problematic classroom situations. Subjects (N=49) were secondary teachers from the Southeast of the Netherlands: 25 inexperienced teachers with 0 to 3 years experience and 24 experienced teachers with more than 5 years of practice. Five simulated problematic classroom situations were shown on videotape, and teachers were asked to complete two questionnaires dealing with emotional stress reaction and the sense of self-efficacy. The data suggest that experienced teachers' reactions are characterized by more complexity than those of inexperienced teachers; experienced teachers produce more reaction-intentions and need more reaction time; both groups show no differences in their range of reactions and seem to react in a confrontive, friendly-directive or understanding-permissive way. Attributional differences of teachers appear to be related to situational cues, rather than to teachers' experience. (LL)

Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of personality traits, gender, age and effects of dispositional hope level in problematic internet usage of university students. Research Methods: This paper is an example of a descriptive study, which presents the relationship between problematic internet usage of university students considering personality traits, gender, age and dispositional hope level. The study group consists of 376 students from different universities. Research data was collected by using the Problematic Internet Usage Scale, The Big Five Inventory, and the Dispositional Hope Scale. In the analysis of data, parametric tests were used. Findings: It has been observed that as neuroticism increases, excessive usage also increases; as conscientiousness increases, excessive usage of the internet decreases. As openness, extraversion and neuroticism increase, the effects of negative results of internet usage increase; as conscientiousness increases, the effects of negative results of internet usage decrease. At the same time, it can be said that as hope levels increase, the negative effects of internet usage decrease. All of these results can be interpreted as variables, except being an extravert does not have a practical value. Implications for Research and Practice: Based on the results, it was suggested that evaluation of results related to the studies made with high school students and adults will contribute to the field. In future studies, relationships between different usage fields of internet and problematic internet usage can be examined. The results would be helpful for prevention and intervention programs.

By aggregating data from a range of empirical studies, we explore how the provision and receipt of social support through online platforms may influence the development and maintenance of PIU behaviors. Our analysis synthesizes evidence across diverse populations. The findings offer insights into the complex dynamics of online social interactions and their implications for mental health and well-being. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying PIU and provides a foundation for developing targeted support strategies to mitigate its negative effects.

Stage 1 IPA at PCI RR

This study constructed a questionnaire, named "Lifestyle Change in Regard to Problematic Internet Use (LC-PIU)," for helping school psychologists detect early indications of PIU-related lifestyle changes in university populations. Our focus is on all university students who use the Internet, not users who already show dependent symptoms. The lifestyles that we concerned include physical/social activities and dietary/sleep patterns that are notable consequences of excessive Internet use (Lam et al., 2009; Choi et al., 2009). With 708 university students recruited in 2009 (Time 1), we tested the factor structure of LC-PIU and determined the concurrent and cross-year predictive utilities with the same participants in 2010 (Time 2). The 2009-sample was randomly split into two independent subsamples for calibration and validation using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The calibration and validation results, along with convergent and discriminant tests, confirmed that the LC-PIU is composed of five distinct subscales: problematic Internet use, physical activity change, social activity change, dietary pattern change, and sleep pattern change. All Time-1 LC-PIU subscores were positively correlated with depression, loneliness, and weekly Internet use at Time 1 and Time 2. Only a negative correlation was found between gender and social activity change at Time 1 and Time 2. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

This study investigated the Turkish undergraduate university students' problematic Internet use (PIU) levels on different dimensions based on demographics (e.g., gender, Internet use by time of day), and Internet activities (e.g., chat, entertainment, social networking, information searching, etc.). Moreover, the study explored some predictors of PIU on different dimensions among the Turkish undergraduate students (N=610). The results indicated that the female students (N=358) had significantly lower PIU levels on all dimensions (i.e., social comfort, loneliness/depression, diminished impulse control and distraction) than those of the males (N=252). Furthermore, the results revealed that the students who use the Internet for entertainment (e.g., game) chat and social networking purposes had significantly higher PIU levels on all dimensions than the students who do not use the Internet for such purposes. However, the students who use the Internet for educational purposes had a significantly lower PIU level on distraction dimension, and the students who use the Internet for information searching demonstrated a significantly lower PIU level on the dimension of diminished impulse control. Moreover, multiple regression analyses revealed that Internet activities such as chat, entertainment and social networking were significant predictors of the all dimensions of PIU. Since activation of the Water Processor Assembly (WPA) on the International Space Station (ISS) in November of 2008, there have been three events in which the TOC (Total Organic Carbon) in the product water has increased to approximately 3 mg/L and has subsequently recovered. Analysis of the product water in 2010 identified the primary component of the TOC as dimethylsilanediol (DMSD). An investigation into the fate of DMSD in the WPA ultimately determined that replacement of both Multifiltration (MF) Beds is the solution to recovering product water quality. The MF Beds were designed to ensure that ionic breakthrough occurs before organic breakthrough. However, DMSD saturated both MF Beds in the series, requiring removal and replacement of both MF Beds with significant life remaining. Analysis of the MF Beds determined that the adsorbent was not effectively removing DMSD, trimethylsilanol, various polydimethylsiloxanes, or dimethylsulfone. Coupled with the fact that the current adsorbent is now obsolete, the authors evaluated various media to identify a replacement adsorbent as well as media with greater capacity for these problematic organic contaminants. This paper provides the results and recommendations of this collaborative study.

The September Typhoon of 1858 destroyed several well-known opium clippers at Double Island, including the Anonyma, Gazelle, Pantaloon, and Mazeppa. Eamont was anchored off Double Island, with "150 fathoms of chain out and a second anchor backed on it at 60 fathoms." The waves in the anchorage were estimated to be as large as 40 feet, and the Eamont’s crew had to cut away her masts.
