Along Bocono Fault were installed local high precision geodetic nets to observe the possible horizontal crustal deformations and movements. In the fault area there are few big structures which are also included in the mentioned investigation. In the near future, measurements shall be extended to other sites of Bocono Fault and also to the El Pilar Fault. In the same way and by similar methods high precision geodetic nets are applied in Venezuela to observe the behavior of big structures, as bridges and large dams and of earth surface deformations due to industrial activities.

A mechanism is proposed as a means of passively leveling an optical assembly about two horizontal axes within a tolerance of one arc-second. The mechanism is designed so that it will stimulate a spherical pendulum for input motions up to 100 arc-seconds. In order to insure the operation of the mechanism and establish the proper geometry, three analytical models were developed. Planar and spatial models which assumed rigid links with pin joints and a planar model assuming deformable links with pin and clamped joints were studied. These results are compared with experimental data gathered for three geometry combinations. It is shown that the results from the planar and spatial analytics agree to within 10%, with the spatial model predicting less error. Hence, the less complicated planar analysis may be performed with little loss in accuracy. Neither rigid link models compare well with the experimental data, with as much as an 80% discrepancy in some cases. When deformable links are included in the planar model, the results are within 16% of the experimental results. This indicates that the resistance to bending at the points can not be neglected in modeling and mechanism to act like a spherical pendulum, and guidelines are established for the design. This program consisted of the production of precision hot forged spiral bevel helicoptor gear sets using methods previously developed under AVSCOM sponsorship. Forging was performed at TRW on a mechanical press using two forging blows, performed in rapid succession with reheating, to obtain forgings with integrally forged tooth forms. The geometry of the as-forged tooth forms were controlled such that the resultant machining stock envelope was suitable for carburising and finish grinding. The parts were finished and then shipped to Boeing-Vertol Co. for qualification testing. The objective of this program is to qualify a process which will produce gear blanks which are metallurgically superior and cheaper to finish than blanks made by conventional methods. (Author)

This talk is in two parts both entitled mass production requires precision engineering. The first is about the dynamical generation of mass for matter particles in gauge theories. I will explain how the details of this depend on a precision knowledge of the interactions. The second is about tests of the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking in QCD that the precision engineering of high luminosity colliders and particle detectors will shortly make possible. Since the latter topic has been described in Ref. 1, here I will just discuss the first: the production of mass from nothing.

This report presents the results of a program to evaluate the relative surface-load capacity of CH-47C transmission spiral bevel gears manufactured by the integrally forged method (forged and ground) as compared to conventional current production gears (cut and ground). A three-phase test program was conducted. Phase I included the deflection test of one set of conventional baseline gears and rotating-load tests of two sets each of the integrally forged and conventional baseline gears. All gears were run at torque levels equivalent to 50,100, and 150 percent of the CH-47C single-engine rating. Phase II included rotating-load tests of two additional conventional basedline and five additional integrally forged gear sets in the Boeing Vertol test stand at loads of 100 to 130 percent of single-engine rating for 340 hours. Phase III involved extended surface-fatigue testing of four precision integrally forged gear sets in the test stand at 100 percent of single-engine rating for 800 hours. The results of this testing indicate that the surface-load capacity of the integrally forged gear sets is at least equivalent to that of the conventional baseline gears. (Author)

This report describes a method and a system for automatic generation of multi-technology process-outlines. A process outline is a sequence of operations leading from the raw workpiece to the required finished part. The method is applied to axisymmetric parts produced by a set of deep-drawing and machining processes. The method, the plan synthesis tactics and the forms of representations are based on the study and evaluation of the technological knowledge. The input is a CAD representation of the required finished part and the output is the highest priority process outline to manufacture the part. The process plan is developed, backwards, in two steps. In the first one a preform is designed and in the second a process plan to manufacture it is generated.

The mirror assembly of the AXAF observatory consists of four concentric, confocal, Wolter type 1 telescopes. Each telescope includes two conical grazing incidence mirrors, a paraboloid followed by a hyperboloid. Fabrication of these state-or-the-art optics is now complete, with predicted performance that surpasses the goals of the program. The fabrication of these optics, whose size and requirements exceed those of any previous x-ray mirrors, presented a challenging task requiring the use of precision engineering in many different forms. Virtually all of the equipment used for this effort required precision engineering. Accurate metrology required deterministic support of the mirrors in order to model the gravity distortions which will not be present on orbit. The primary axial instrument, known as the Precision Metrology Station (PMS), was a unique scanning Fizeau interferometer. After metrology was complete, the optics were placed in specially designed Glass Support Fixtures (GSF's) for installation on the Automated Cylindrical Grinder/Polishers (ACG/P's). The GSF's were custom molded for each mirror element to match the shape of the outer surface to minimize distortions of the inner surface. The final performance of the telescope is expected to far exceed the original goals and expectations of the program.

Errors in the position of the tool in the work space of a machine tool are a major problem in precision engineering. The problem of determining these errors in a convenient and acceptable way for a certain thermal condition of a given machine tool has not yet been fully solved, for the unmanned manufacturing environment. To determine the errors in the position of the tool with a touch probe, a metrology pallet was used. The error model for touch probe application has been constructed using actual error measurements. An error calculation procedure, including the calibration of the metrology pallet on a machine tool, is formulated. Two approaches to obtaining error regression functions at a tool tip position have been formulated using one or two touch probes and the metrology pallet. A procedure for the decomposition of the probed errors into error components is set-up using the regression analysis. It establishes the relative contribution of each error component to the change in the resultant errors in the work space. A dynamic method of compensating the backlash is proposed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) analysis to determine the important factors affecting the backlash. Determination of probing intervals for the metrology pallet is done dynamically according to the thermal change of the machine tool using the drift error model obtained by General Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique at Ivakhnenko.

For mechanical systems, the basic principles of precision motion have long been clearly enunciated. What is new is the potential for interactive computer use in real-time feedback control, involving (1) structural stabilization of the instrument or machine; (2) movement and location of its parts; (3) processing of metrology information; and (4) positioning and stabilization of th tool/workpiece interactions in a machine tool. This can lead to a distributed, multivariable, multiloop control problem, with significant computation required in the feedback algorithm. Although the advantages of real-time control have been clear for some time, no complete machine tool or metrology system exploits this with the control of the major variables. At present open loop control is being applied, with corrections for calculated (or previously measured) estimates of systematic errors. Closed loop control automatically corrects for unpredictable errors from factors such as mechanical deflections, thermal deformation, and wear. Once in place, a system for precision manufacture can be used for less exacting tasks, offfering reductions of required inspections and assuring part-to-part reproducibility, with reduced rejections. Such a system is at the heart of automated production, yet remains a research area.

The United States Air Force is partnering with the United States Army as well as allied nations to develop a revolutionary advance in logistical support known as the Joint Precision Air Drop System (JPADS). The focus of this study is to develop a process to quantitatively analyze system sensitivities to various types of weather inputs and the corresponding effect on system accuracy. Weather balloons were used to provide representative truth to which forecast weather could be compared. Each data type was fed into the JPADS Mission Planner to produce navigation points which could then be compared statistically. The process was tested on a limited data set to provide a first look at the variables of forecast resolution and lead-time. Initial results indicate best system accuracy is achieved for lowest forecast resolution (i.e., 45 km vs. 5 km data) and shortest lead-time (i.e., 12 hrs vs. 12 hrs). This result will not only allow for better accuracy of JPADS, but also reduce bandwidth and transmission time necessary to send weather forecast data to the warfighter.

Thermal effects on the accuracy of numerically controlled machine tools are specially important in the context of unmanned manufacture or under conditions of precision metal cutting. Removal of the operator from the direct control of the metal cutting process has created problems in terms of maintaining accuracy. The objective of this research is to study thermal effects on the accuracy of numerically controlled machine tools. The initial part of the research report is concerned with the analysis of a hypothetical machine. The thermal characteristics of this machine are studied. Numerical methods for evaluating the errors exhibited by the slides of the machine are proposed and the possibility of predicting thermally induced errors by the use of regression equations is investigated. A method for computing the workspace error is also presented. The final part is concerned with the actual measurement of errors on a modern CNC machining center. Thermal influences on the errors is the main objective of the experimental work. Thermal influences on the errors of machine tools are predictable. Techniques for determining thermal effects on machine tools at a design stage are also presented. Efforts concerned the establishment of a production engineering measure for high reliability, fixed, film, precision resistors suitable for use in the Minuteman program. Design of a sub assembly machine is well under way and estimated as being 20% complete. This design will perform three subassembly operations on one piece of equipment. A ceramic evaluation program is underway with the receipt of the ceramic pieces and the units are going through the manufacturing process. A helium-nitrogen study was outlined and time scheduled with production for the manufacture of devices. A new spiralling techniques investigation was started with the formulation of tests to determine the effect of mechanized handling on the metallized substrate.

Measurements of the VETA encircled energies have been performed at 5 energies within 16 radii ranging from 0.05 to 200 arcseconds. We report here on the analysis of the accuracy of those measurements. A common 'error tree' structure applies, and we present representative numbers for the larger terms. At 0.277, 1.5, and 2.07 keV, and for radii of 3 arcsec and larger, our measurements have estimated 1 sigma errors of 0.6 to 1.5 percent. Effects of measurement statistics and of the VETA test mount limit the accuracy at smaller angles, and modulation by the counter window support structure together with the imperfect position repeatability limit the accuracy for the 0.93 and 2.3 keV energies. We expect to mitigate these limitations when calibrating the complete AXAF flight mirror assembly.

The PAMS Engineering Services Program was initiated to provide technical support for experimental testing, and dynamic engineering evaluations of airborne antenna systems utilizing the Precision Antenna Measurement System and associated airborne instrumentation. The support level included the modification of existing PAMS instrumentation, new computer programs, and analyses of the PAMS and its environment. The program also included the operation and maintenance of the PAMS; however, this aspect will not be reported on in this document.

MAST consists of industry-specific skill standards and model curricula for 15 occupational specialty areas within the U.S. machine tool and metals-related industries. This volume provides the MAST standards and curriculum for the manufacturing engineering technician specialty area. This document is intended to help education and training institutions deliver the Machine Tool Advanced Skills Technology (MAST) curriculum to a variety of individuals and organizations. MAST consists of industry-specific skill standards and model curricula for 15 occupational specialty areas within the U.S. machine tool and metals-related industries. This volume provides the MAST standards and curriculum for the manufacturing engineering technician specialty area. (A manufacturing engineering technician is a person who uses special knowledge and skills to recommend and implement solutions for specific manufacturing applications.)
