5Microsoft Research Audio 104493: ‘NeuroScholar’, A Practical Solution Addressing Information Overload In Systems-Level Neuroscience

By

Systems-level neuroscience lacks a formal theoretical structure, relying on argumentation based on experimental findings expressed in the primary literature. Theoretical models may typically be represented as summary diagrams in a paper’s discussion. Within a subject as complex and multifaceted as neuroscience, this lack of formalization leads inevitably to problems of information overload for individual researchers as it is a significant challenge to manage and manipulate large volumes of information from a distributed resource such as the literature and scientists’ own individual records. We present ‘NeuroScholar’, a knowledge base desktop application that specifically targets literature- and laboratory-based information, providing a structured knowledge engineering approach for neuroscience. It provides a general object-oriented data model to encapsulate complex data into entities, and a graph-theoretical approach that represents relations between entities edges between nodes in a graph. The system has frameworks for unit testing, plugins (to embed external applications within NeuroScholar), proxies (to export NeuroScholar’s knowledge management capabilities to external applications) and knowledge acquisition based on questionnaires. Specialized plugins include (a) an annotation mechanism for pdf files (built with Multivalent, a third party library), (b) an electronic laboratory notebook component, (c) an annotation mechanism for vector graphics and (d) NeuARt, a neuroanatomical data viewer based on standard atlases which can also use the proxy framework to act as a standalone neuroanatomical data management tool. The knowledge acquisition subsystem provides an easy way to link free-form document annotation with structured knowledge representations for specific types of experiment. We are applying the system directly in two systems-level neuroscience laboratories, one focused on neuroanatomy, the other on neuroendocrinology. It is anticipated that NeuroScholar may provide a platform for theoretical research in neuroscience by delivering knowledge engineering capabilities directly to experimental scientists to facilitate analysis and communication. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. 12Shared And Distinct Neural Correlates For Dyadic Social Interactions In Second-person Neuroscience: A Systematic Review

By

Social neuroscience has rapidly advanced by uncovering the biological bases of human social behavior, with foundational work emphasizing the need for multilevel and dynamic approaches to social cognition (Cacioppo & Berntson, 1992; Ochsner & Lieberman, 2001). Traditionally, research focused on isolated, observational paradigms, limiting ecological validity. Recent methodological innovations, notably the emergence of second-person neuroscience, have shifted the field toward studying real-time, reciprocal social interactions (Redcay & Schilbach, 2019; Schilbach, 2022). This approach leverages tools such as hyperscanning and portable neuroimaging (e.g., fNIRS, EEG, dual-fMRI), enabling the investigation of neural synchronization and coordination between individuals during authentic social exchanges. The present review synthesizes how core social affect and cognitive processes—such as emotional reciprocity, joint attention, interpersonal coordination, empathy, and theory of mind—are operationalized in interactive, ecologically valid paradigms. We systematically examine (1) the range of social affect and cognitive processes and task types studied in second-person neuroscience, (2) the diversity of interactive paradigms employed, (3) the neuroimaging modalities used to capture dynamic social interaction, and (4) the underlying neural mechanisms during social interaction. Furthermore, we assess whether different imaging modalities provide unique or complementary insights into these processes. By bridging laboratory paradigms with real-world social functioning, this review clarifies how methodological and contextual factors shape our understanding of social cognition, with implications for mental disorders characterized by social deficits. Our integrative approach advances the field by highlighting both conceptual and technical frontiers in the study of interactive social neuroscience.

15ERIC EJ1131096: Stereoscopic Perception Of Women In Real And Virtual Environments: A Study Towards Educational Neuroscience

By

Previous studies report the involvement of specific brain activation in stereoscopic vision and the perception of depth information. This work presents the first comparative results of adult women on the effects of stereoscopic perception in three different static environments; a real, a two dimensional (2D) and a stereoscopic three dimensional (3D), all with the same content. Electric brain activity of 36 female students was analyzed at ?, a, ß and ? frequency bands. Results in alpha rhythm as well as alpha desynchronization showed that the topology of cerebral activity is the same in the three environments. The participants experienced three similar and non-demanding environments without specific memory requirements and information encoding. Statistical differences in theta activity showed that the real and 3D environments caused similar cognitive processes, while the 2D caused an increase of anxiety indicating that perhaps participants were looking for the third dimension. Beta and gamma activity showed that participants perceived the third dimension of the stereoscopic environment as in the real one, something that did not happen in the 2D environment. Our findings indicate that stereoscopic 3D virtual environments seem to approximate the real ones as far as it regards the cognitive processes they cause. Three dimensional stereoscopic environments increase users' attention over the 2D and cause less mental effort. These experimental results support the new field of educational neuroscience and its potential to the design of digital learning environments.

26Colin Camerer: Neuroscience, Game Theory, Monkeys

By

When two people are trying to make a deal -- whether they’re competing or cooperating -- what’s really going on inside their brains? Behavioral economist Colin Camerer shows research that reveals just how little we’re able to predict what others are thinking. And he presents an unexpected study that shows chimpanzees might just be better at it than we are. (Filmed at TEDxCalTech.)

43DTIC AD1016626: Integrated Cognitive-neuroscience Architectures For Understanding Sensemaking (ICArUS): Phase 1 Test And Evaluation Development Guide

By

The Integrated Cognitive-neuroscience Architectures for Understanding Sensemaking (ICArUS) Program aimed to build computational cognitive-neuroscience models to explain, predict, and emulate the process of human sensemaking the process of generating hypotheses to explain data that is sparse, noisy, and uncertain. Phase 1 lasted from December, 2010 to December, 2012. In Phase 1, the program employed a challenge problem, based on geospatial data, to compare the models performance to human performance. Here, the term geospatial data includes multiple types of intelligence data, any of which may be represented in a georeferenced framework for instance, a layer within a GIS-like display. The challenge problem was focused on scientific rigor as opposed to operational relevance; all examples were fictitious in nature and represented in a neutral manner. This documents primary purpose is to specify the format of the ICArUS Phase 1 Challenge Problem. It was written for software developers, contains development code, and is not meant to stand alone. The document, ICArUS: Overview of Test and Evaluation (T and E) Materials [ADA624922] provides a broad overview of MITREs T and E effort, including a list of all T and E documents and materials produced in Phase 1.

1West African Folk Tales

By

A collection of folk tales mostly centered around Anansi. In West African lore Anansi is known as a trickster god, and is often depicted as either a spider, a human or a combination of both. Thus many of the stories are attempts by Anansi to trick others for his own gain. Other stories are about why certain animals act in certain ways. (Summary by Lizzie Driver)

2Station Life in New Zealand

By

Book's cover

Station Life in New Zealand is a collection of cheerful and interesting letters written by Lady Mary Anne Barker (nee Mary Anne Stewart) that is a New Zealand "classic". These letters are described in the Preface as "the exact account of a lady's experience of the brighter and less practical side of colonisation". The letters were written between 1865 and 1868 and cover the time of her travel with her husband (Frederick Broomie) to New Zealand and life on a colonial sheep-station at their homestead "Broomielaw", located in the Province of Canterbury, South Island of New Zealand. Although these letters are written with great humour and fine story telling, her life was marred by tragedy while in Canterbury through the illness and eventual death of her baby son.

The first four ships of settlers that colonised the Canterbury region had only arrived in 1850. Consequently, little was known about, for example, the irregular Canterbury weather patterns that would dominate the lives of Lady Barker and her husband for those three short years. She describes the regular predations of the Canterbury nor'wester (a type of Fohn wind), including its role in completely blowing away her attempts at establishing a croquet lawn, the devastating effects of snow storm that killed over half of their sheep, and of a great flood that not only flooded Christchurch but demolished her poultry and nearly drowned her husband.

Lady Mary Anne Barker was a strong horse woman and very keen for all sorts of "adventures". She describes instigating a bitterly cold late autumn overnight camping trip to the top of their nearest hill, Flagpole, followed the next morning by a serene sunrise over the Canterbury plains. In other letters, she describes her pride and enjoyment at joining and keeping up with nine men, who doubted her abilities, for long hours of walking in untracked, untamed bush with the aim of hunting wild cattle; and her joy at setting ablaze the tussock grasslands on their sheep station in spite of the risk to her eyelashes. As one of the few women in her part of Canterbury at the time, she also helped provide the neighbourhood with books to read, and baptism and schools for children. Lady Mary Anne Barker and her husband returned to England at the end of 1868. (Summary by Gail Timmerman-Vaughan)

3Station Amusements in New Zealand

By

Book's cover

Station Amusements in New Zealand is a collection of vignettes about life on a sheep station (high country farm) in colonial New Zealand during the 1860s and is a further embellishment of events presented in Mary Anne Barker’s first book "Station Life in New Zealand". Mary Anne Barker and her husband Frederick Broomie lived at their sheep station “Broomielaw” under the foothills of the Southern Alps of Canterbury, New Zealand for three years from 1865 – 1868. Mary Anne Barker wrote in Chapter I: “I purpose therefore in these sketches to describe some of the pursuits which afforded us a keen enjoyment at the time, --an enjoyment arising from perfect health, simple tastes, and an exquisite climate.” (Summary by Gail Timmerman Vaughan)

Jessup, astronomer, researcher and writer on the subject of "Flying Saucers," was found in his station wagon in a park near Coral Gables, Florida. Medical examiners labeled the death "suicide."
...
"This book does not attempt to unravel the mystery of the researcher's unfortunate passing. Instead, it is content with presenting a great many facts, along with some speculation.
