1The Utility Of MMPI 2 Scores With A Correctional Population And Convicted Sex Offenders
By Psychology
The Utility of MMPI-2 Scores With A Correctional Population and Convicted Sex Offenders Briana Grover, 2011. Abstract: The MMPI-2 is a widely used objective personality measure ac ross all settings. It is esp ecially useful in correc- tional settings due to its objectivity with standardized ad ministration and scoring This helps aid many factors in- cluding volume, legal accountability, the nature of the clie ntele, and the need for security. Since assessments provide very useful information about prisoners for correctional staff, these factors make the MMPI-2 a very valuable test to use in prison. Studies have found no significant differences between African Americans and Caucasians, however have found subtle differences between MMPI-2 scores of males and female offenders. One specific area the MMPI-2 has been used for in prison is with sex offenders. Previous studies have aimed to use the MMPI-2 to identify high and low risk sex offenders, as well as differentiate between general sex offenders and internet sex offenders. Not only has it been used to id entify certain sex offenders, it has been used in exam- ining the predictors of completion of sex offender treatment programs. Citation: Grover, Brianna. (2011). 6Profile Patterns Of Sex Offenders Using The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Second Edition-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF)
Profile Patterns of Sex Offenders Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory- Second Edition- Restructured Form. (MMPI-2-RF) Vanslyke, Renee (2017). Abstract: Personality assessment of sex offenders provides clarifying information regarding underlying characteristics that may contribute to commis sion of sex offenses. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and its second edition, the MMPI - 2, have been the most extensively used personality measures in the psychological assessment of sex offenders. The latest version of the test, th e Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Second Edition, Restructured Form (MMPI - 2 - RF) is the focus of the current study. The current study evaluated MMPI - 2 - RF profiles obtained from a sample of 281 adult male sex offenders. The mean age of the samp le was 36.3 ( SD = 13.1; range = 18 – 75). A cluster analytic approach was taken to identify subgroups of sex offenders, similar to research directions taken with the MMPI and MMPI - 2. Results of an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis and subsequen t K - means analysis yielded three distinct clusters. Discriminant function analyses indicated two significant functions that correctly classified 96.4% of cases into these clusters. Multivariate and univariate analyses of variance indicated significant di fferences in mean scores across the three clusters for 33 of the 49 scales examined. A review of cluster patterns indicated significantly higher scores in Cluster 1 ( n = 46) than Cluster 2 ( n = 93) and Cluster 3 ( n = 142), and significantly higher scores i n Cluster 2 than Cluster 3. 7ERIC ED426334: Use Of The MMPI And MMPI-2 With Persons With Bulimia.
By ERIC
The use of the MMPI and MMPI-2 to assist in the understanding of individuals with bulimia nervosa is examined. DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis of bulimia nervosa are reviewed. It is also important to understand the personality variables or psychological correlates associated with this disorder. The structure and history of the MMPI and MMPI-2 are briefly reviewed; findings from studies using MMPI and MMPI-2 are discussed; and the information these tests provide about individuals with bulimia nervosa is presented. Personality variables and psychological correlates associated with bulimia nervosa are examined and their relation to particular MMPI-2 scales is considered. Implications for potential prevention and intervention strategies are discussed. Although the use of the MMPI-2 does not provide clear cut answers or completely consistent profiles of individuals with bulimia, the test may help in putting together general personality characteristics common to individuals with bulimia and in understanding basic commonalties among individuals with bulimia. The specific variables underlying a particular person's struggle with bulimia may become more apparent when test data is considered in conjunction with data from the clinical interview. Further research with MMPI-2 may help to identify persons at-risk for bulimia nervosa. (EMK)

11ERIC ED449417: Gender Differences On The MMPI-2 For Colombian University Students.
By ERIC
In this study the efficacy of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) was examined with a Colombian college student population. It was projected that the participants would have elevated scales related to psychological distress, marginality, and poor morale, given the current socio-political climate in Columbia. Participants were university students (men=21; women=54) from Bogota, Columbia. Similarities and differences between male and female participants were examined on the Spanish version of the MMPI-2. Three conclusions can be drawn from the results. First, women were more likely to present issues related to interpersonal relationships and physical/somatic complaints, suggesting they are more internally conscious. Second, men were more likely to repress feelings related to anger and hostility and to report a sense of disconnectedness or alienation towards society, implying internalized anger and frustration. Third, differences were found on two of the traditional clinical scales; women obtained higher scores on the Masculinity Femininity and Psycopathic Deviant scales. These elevated scores suggest a more non-traditional sex role attitude in females than their male counterparts, and possible adaptive features to the stress related to their enrollment at the university or their ability to manage stress within Colombian society. 12ERIC ED396195: Using The MMPI-2 In Career Advising: Exploring Implications For Usefulness In Personal Adjustment.
By ERIC
Career counselors at colleges and universities are encountering an increasingly diverse student population. It has been suggested that the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the updated MMPI-2 can help career counselors as they try to help students deal with a wide range of individual needs and capabilities for coping with life stress. The reasoning behind using the MMPI and the MMPI-2 in career counseling is two-fold. The instruments can help counselors in making appropriate career counseling interventions and may also provide a reliable source of personal knowledge for students to utilize in their career decisions. Several investigations with the MMPI and career counseling found the instrument helpful in identifying individuals who are able to use a self-directed pattern when it comes to career assistance. The MMPI was also helpful in identifying individuals who may need more intensive help in their decision making process. Although few studies have directly investigated the usefulness of the MMPI-2 in career counseling, research on the consistency between the MMPI-2 and the MMPI leaves researchers optimistic that the newer test will also serve as a valuable tool in career decisions. Future research on the MMPI-2 should reveal more information about its value in career counseling. Contains 14 references. (RJM)

14ERIC ED469602: Using The MMPI/MMPI-2 With The Hispanic/Latino Population.
By ERIC
Examination of the relationship between Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, racial identification, acculturation, culture, language and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI/MMPI-2) has revealed controversial results. Because the MMPI/MMPI-2 is the most widely used personality assessment, it is important to understand how ethnic and socio-cultural variables factor into a psychological evaluation. This paper provides an overview of the literature on the appropriateness of using the MMPI/MMPI-2 with the Hispanic/Latino population as well as appropriate uses of the test with this population. 15Assessing Hispanic Clients Using The MMPI-2 And MMPI-a
Examination of the relationship between Hispanic/Latino ethnicity, racial identification, acculturation, culture, language and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI/MMPI-2) has revealed controversial results. 22ERIC ED353341: Hypnotic Susceptibility And Personality As Measured By The MMPI-2.
By ERIC
This study evaluated personality variables that underlie hypnotic susceptibility. It was correlational, did not require ongoing contact with participants, and included a validation study as an integral component. The subjects were 359 college students (250 in the original sample and 109 in the cross validation study) taking undergraduate courses in educational psychology, educational statistics, and tests and measurements at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), the Melei and Hilgard Questionnaire (demographic and attitudinal measures), and the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility were administered. The MMPI-2 scales, attitudes toward hypnosis, predictions of hypnotizability, and demographic variables were correlated with scores on the Harvard Scale. Stepwise multiple regression was used to maximize the ability of the variables to predict hypnotic susceptibility. Pearson product-moment correlations were computed. Attitudinal variables were consistently related to susceptibility, although the practical significance was marginal, with these measures accounting for only 10 to 13 percent of the variance in scores on the Harvard Scale. No consistent relationships were found between MMPI-2 variables and hypnotic susceptibility. The MMPI-2 variables explored included response set, existing MMPI-2 scales both singly and in combination, and individual items on the instrument. Included are 3 tables and 54 references. (RLC)

24DTIC ADA331909: Psychological Assessment Of Military Federal Agents Using The MMPI-2: A Look At Employment Selection And Performance Prediction.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study examined the utility of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) for employment selection and performance prediction in a sample of 133 military law enforcement investigators. An unscreened group who completed the MMPI-2 but were hired without examination of the test results was compared with a screened group whose results had been part of the hiring decision. In the first analysis, the MMPI-2 profiles of the two groups were compared. Although the unscreened group tended towards higher mean scores on the majority of scales, greater variability, and a higher frequency of elevated scores, these trends did not reach statistical significance. Secondly, the two groups were compared on three measures of job performance: a skills composite score, number of positive distinctions, and number of negative distinctions. The unscreened group tended towards greater negative distinctions, although this trend likewise did not reach statistical significance. In the final comparison, predictive links between the MMPI-2 protocols and job performance criteria were explored using two subsets of the total sample. No MMPI-2 scales were significantly linked to positive distinctions, five scales were related to negative distinctions, and two scales were correlated with the skills composite score. However, the correlations were of insufficient magnitude to be used as individual predictors. It seems most likely that previous non-psychological screening substantially reduced the magnitude of predictor-criterion relationships. Also, the small and unequal sample size limited statistical power. Nevertheless, this study described a unique sample of agents permitted to work without benefit of psychological test results--a methodological ideal.

27DTIC ADA518969: The Effects Of Testing Circumstance And Education Level On MMPI-2 Correction Scale Scores
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is used by the Federal Aviation Administration to assess psychopathology in air traffic control specialist applicants after a conditional offer of employment is extended. Two groups are compared in this study on their level of Scale K, which is used as a measure of defensiveness (putting one's best foot forward - faking good), but which may be influenced by socioeconomic status and education. Group 1 had already been hired and took the MMPI-2 as part of a voluntary research protocol while in training. Group 2 took the MMPI-2 as part of their medical screening process for hiring. There was a significant difference between the two groups (2 indicated a higher level of K than 1) on the level of K, suggesting that K is likely measuring defensiveness. Group 1 faced no consequences for their results, while Group 2 faced potential additional psychological assessment as a consequence of their MMPI-2 performance, and possibly even ultimate medical disqualification. While the hypothesis that groups would differ on K as a function of testing circumstances was supported, the hypothesis that K would rise as a function of education was not.

28Comparison Of Memory Function And MMPI-2 Profile Between Post-traumatic Stress Disorder And Adjustment Disorder After A Traffic Accident.
By Bae, Sung-Man, Hyun, Myoung-Ho and Lee, Seung-Hwan
This article is from Clinical Psychopharmacology and Neuroscience , volume 12 . Abstract Objective: Differential diagnosis between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adjustment disorder (AD) is rather difficult, but very important to the assignment of appropriate treatment and prognosis. This study investigated methods to differentiate PTSD and AD. Methods: Twenty-five people with PTSD and 24 people with AD were recruited. Memory tests, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2), and Beck's Depression Inventory were administered. Results: There were significant decreases in immediate verbal recall and delayed verbal recognition in the participants with PTSD. The reduced memory functions of participants with PTSD were significantly influenced by depressive symptoms. Hypochondriasis, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, paranoia, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder scale of MMPI-2 classified significantly PTSD and AD group. Conclusion: Our results suggest that verbal memory assessments and the MMPI-2 could be useful for discriminating between PTSD and AD.

29Assessing The Driver's Personality: A Comparison Between Two MMPI-2 Based Models Of Driving-Related Personality Traits

The effort of some researchers in the last few years aimed to identify personality determinats of risky driving at all ages. The driver's personality affects decisions and behavior behind the wheel. Recent evidence suggested that some driving-related personality traits directly influenced the driving performance with visible effects on driving-related cognitive skills. The present study is aimed to compare two MMPI2-based models (i.e., PSY-5 vs IVPE-MMPI based) of driving-related personality traits in predicting the cognitive prerequisites for fitness-to-drive. The two investigated MMPI-based models were tested twofold for each outcome, not considering demographic variables (i.e., age, gender, and level of education), but also net of their contribution.

32MMPI-2 Psychological Test: Controversial, But Hard To Fake
By Sam Vaknin
Everything You Need to Know about Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Abuse - click on this link: http://www.narcissistic-abuse.com/faq1.html The MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), composed by Hathaway (a psychologist) and McKinley (a physician) is the outcome of decades of research into personality disorders. The revised version, the MMPI-2 was published in 1989 but was received cautiously. MMPI-2 changed the scoring method and some of the normative data. It was, therefore, hard to compare it to its much hallowed (and oft validated) predecessor. The MMPI-2 is made of 567 binary (true or false) items (questions). Each item requires the subject to respond: "This is true (or false) as applied to me". There are no "correct" answers. The test booklet allows the diagnostician to provide a rough assessment of the patient (the "basic scales") based on the first 370 queries (though it is recommended to administer all of 567 of them). Based on numerous studies, the items are arranged in scales. The responses are compared to answers provided by "control subjects". The scales allow the diagnostician to identify traits and mental health problems based on these comparisons. In other words, there are no answers that are "typical to paranoid or narcissistic or antisocial patients". There are only responses that deviate from an overall statistical pattern and conform to the reaction patterns of other patients with similar scores. The nature of the deviation determines the patient's traits and tendencies - but not his or her diagnosis! The interpreted outcomes of the MMPI-2 are phrased thus: "The test results place subject X in this group of patients who, statistically-speaking, reacted similarly. The test results also set subject X apart from these groups of people who, statistically-speaking, responded differently". The test results would never say: "Subject X suffers from (this or that) mental health problem". There are three validity scales and ten clinical ones in the original MMPI-2, but other scholars derived hundreds of additional scales. For instance: to help in diagnosing personality disorders, most diagnosticians use either the MMPI-I with the Morey-Waugh-Blashfield scales in conjunction with the Wiggins content scales - or (more rarely) the MMPI-2 updated to include the Colligan-Morey-Offord scales. The validity scales indicate whether the patient responded truthfully and accurately or was trying to manipulate the test. They pick up patterns. Some patients want to appear normal (or abnormal) and consistently choose what they believe are the "correct" answers. This kind of behavior triggers the validity scales. These are so sensitive that they can indicate whether the subject lost his or her place on the answer sheet and was responding randomly! The validity scales also alert the diagnostician to problems in reading comprehension and other inconsistencies in response patterns. The clinical scales are dimensional (though not multiphasic as the test's misleading name implies). They measure hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviation, masculinity-femininity, paranoia, psychasthenia, schizophrenia, hypomania, and social introversion. There are also scales for alcoholism, post-traumatic stress disorder, and personality disorders. The interpretation of the MMPI-2 is now fully computerized. The computer is fed with the patients' age, sex, educational level, and marital status and does the rest. Still, many scholars have criticized the scoring of the MMPI-2.
