The Navy Electricity and Electronics Training Series (NEETS) was developed for use by personnel in many electrical- and electronic-related Navy ratings. Written by, and with the advice of, senior technicians in these ratings, this series provides beginners with fundamental electrical and electronic concepts through self-study. The presentation of this series is not oriented to any specific rating structure, but is divided into modules containing related information organized into traditional paths of instruction. Module 1 , Introduction to Matter, Energy, and Direct Current, introduces the course with a short history of electricity and electronics and proceeds into the characteristics of matter, energy, and direct current (dc). It also describes some of the general safety precautions and first-aid procedures that should be common knowledge for a person working in the field of electricity. Related safety hints are located throughout the rest of the series, as well. It has recently been recognized that a single intensely ionizing particle can alter the information stored in a modern semiconductor memory and possibly do permanent damage to the microelectronic circuit involved. Such particles are common in nature and abundant in space. This report describes the natural particle environment in which modern space-borne electronics must operate, and provides a simple but accurate empirical model of that environment.

A workshop was held which was devoted to the physics and chemistry of new optical processing and analysis techniques on surfaces for materials and structures of interest in microelectronics. It contained tutorial papers on topics of general interest to this technical area and reviewed progress in ongoing research. In addition, selected short talks describing recent results were presented. The workshop included talks from various groups throughout the United States and Europe.

The Proceedings for International Workshop on Device Technology: Alternatives to SiO2 as Gate Dielectric for Future Si-Based Microelectronics, 3-5 September 2001. This meeting focuses on different aspects concerning electrical, structural and physico-chemical characterization of alternative oxide materials, the so called high-K dielectrics, which are being considered as replacements for SiO2 as gate dielectrics in ultra-large scale integration devices. Recent progress in sub-2 nm oxide and oxynitride gate dielectrics will be also approached as they constitute the present stage of semiconductor technology. Finally, the emerging field of oxide, oxynitride and alternative oxide films on SiC will also compose the program. It is the purpose of this Workshop to establish a vivid and quite informal meeting for discussing the subjects in the presence of leading researchers from major semiconductor device manufacturers, research centers and university laboratories.

A series of experimental studies was conducted on transistor elements suitable for microcircuits. A relationship of transient radiation effects to active volume and other parameters was made. The experimental and theoretical method developed offers a way of obtaining minority carrier lifetimes, depletion layer width, junction area, diffusion length, and active volume when the absorbed dose and the ionization efficiency are known in the transistor element of a microcircuit. Conversely, given the above parameters it is possible to determine the primary photocurrent of the microcircuit junction under a variety of radiation conditions. It was shown that the fundamental Boltzmann equation describing charge transport in semiconductors can be used to modify the usual continuity equation to obtain a more accurate circuit model for transistor elements in microcircuits. The oxide-isolated microcircuits were tested and compared with the usual backbiased isolation junction diode type.

Benzo-Triazole (BTA) is considered as an important bridging material that can connect an organic polymer to the metal electrode on silicon wafers as a part of the microelectronics fabrication technology. We report a detailed process of surface induced 3-D polymerization of BTA on the Cu electrode material which was measured with the Ultraviolet Photoemission Spectroscopy (UPS), X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), and Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). The electric utilization of shield and chain polymerization of BTA on Cu surface is contemplated in this study.

Future small satellite systems for both Earth observation as well as deep-space exploration are greatly enabled by the technological advances in deep sub-micron microelectronics technologies. Whereas these technological advances are being fueled by the commercial (non-space) industries, more recently there has been an exciting new synergism evolving between the two otherwise disjointed markets. In other words, both the commercial and space industries are enabled by advances in low-power, highly integrated, miniaturized (low-volume), lightweight, and reliable real-time embedded systems. Recent announcements by commercial semiconductor manufacturers to introduce Silicon On Insulator (SOI) technology into their commercial product lines is driven by the need for high-performance low-power integrated devices. Moreover, SOI has been the technology of choice for many space semiconductor manufacturers where radiation requirements are critical. This technology has inherent radiation latch-up immunity built into the process, which makes it very attractive to space applications. In this paper, we describe the advanced microelectronics and avionics technologies under development by NASA's Deep Space Systems Technology Program (also known as X2000). These technologies are of significant benefit to both the commercial satellite as well as the deep-space and Earth orbiting science missions. Such a synergistic technology roadmap may truly enable quick turn-around, low-cost, and highly capable small satellite systems for both Earth observation as well as deep-space missions.

The NASA Cooperative Agreement NAG4-210 was granted under the FY2000 Faculty Awards for Research (FAR) Program. The project was proposed to examine the effects of charged particles and neutrons on selected random access memory (RAM) technologies. The concept of the project was to add to the current knowledge of Single Event Effects (SEE) concerning RAM and explore the impact of selected forms of radiation on Error Detection and Correction Systems. The project was established as an extension of a previous FAR awarded to Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), under the direction of Dr. Richard Wilkins as principal investigator. The NASA sponsored Center for Applied Radiation Research (CARR) at PVAMU developed an electronic test-bed to explore and quantify SEE on RAM from charged particles and neutrons. The test-bed was developed using 486DX microprocessor technology (PC-104) and a custom test board to mount RAM integrated circuits or other electronic devices. The test-bed had two configurations - a bench test version for laboratory experiments and a 400 Hz powered rack version for flight experiments. The objectives of this project were to: 1) Upgrade the Electronic Test-bed (ETB) to a Pentium configuration; 2) Accommodate more than only 8 Mbytes of RAM; 3) Explore Error Detection and Correction Systems for radiation effects; 4) Test modern RAM technologies in radiation environments.

Accelerated testing must address the failure mechanisms active within the devices undergoing tests in order to assess lifetimes in a meaningful way. The assumption of constant temperature, thermally activated lifetime, based upon the Arrhenius assumptions, does not always provide the necessary understanding to interpret accelerated tests in microelectronics. Plastic encapsulants, dielectric polymers, and underfill materials are subject to delamination and cracking with thermal cycling. Crack propagation during use environment exposure, drives the potential for failure of microelectronic devices and is therefore a necessary focal point in qualification and life testing. This paper reviews the available research in the application of fracture mechanics to this class of problems in microelectronics including relevant test data. In addition, useful acceleration factor models are derived for polymer crack propagation based on principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Further, a simple approach to estimating the minimum temperature cycling ranges, necessary to propagate a crack, is also presented. Finally, a methodology of applying acceleration factors to develop testing plans is shown, with an example in spaceflight for a cubesat in low Earth orbit. Overall, this is a paper that shows a useful and appropriate process for creating physics of failure based life testing for delamination and cracking failures in microelectronic polymers in a temperature cycling environment.

This compilation of reports on microtechnologies and microelectronics emphasizes new and innovative systems designs to materials science and applied mechanics using micrometer and nanometer dimensions. In addition to better efficiency and optimization, the research and design methodology will be used to solve a variety of engineering problems. Applications later find use in areas of communications, spectroscopy, remote sensing, nonlinear optics, projection displays and micromachining and provide the design framework for the future. Research areas include principles of microstructural evolution in processing and in service and the design methodology for control of multilevel dynamic hierarchical microstructures, the mechanics of electro mechanical coupled materials and reports that explore fundamental concepts and formulas for designing and utilizing all classes of lasers specifically, miniature solid state lasers. The drive for increased device density in memory technologies demands smaller and closer packed future devices.
