3ERIC ED312719: Thinking About Television: Toward A Social Cognition Theory Of Mass Communication.

By

This paper, (observing that socialization about, interactions with, and influences of the mass media are interrelated in important and understudied ways), briefly reviews the notion of "self" as defined through socially constructed matrices, and discusses evidence supporting the influence of social cognition as a factor in human behavioral outcomes. The implications of these ideas are examined in terms of media-related behaviors, particularly television usage. The paper proposes a broad reciprocal interaction scheme for elaborating the role of imputed attributions in the process of mass media influences. Following an introduction, the sections discuss self-perception and media use; the self in the context of television usage; social cognitive perceptions of television usage; research possibilities; and steps toward a reciprocal interaction scheme for understanding the processes of mass communication influences. (One figure is included, and 25 references are attached.) (SR)

11ERIC ED235522: Communication Policy And Theory: Current Perspectives On Mass Communication Research.

By

The integration of American and European mass communication research models would provide a broader sociocultural framework for formulating communication policy. Emphasizing a functional approach, the American diffusionist model assumes that society is a system of interrelated parts naturally tending toward a state of dynamic equilibrium. The European model, however, postulates a society not in equilibrium but in constant flux owing to conflict among competing interest groups. Consequently, while American research tends to focus on mass media's effect on the individual and general role in the socialization process, European studies concentrate on the distribution of control over telecommunications. To integrate these two models, a theory must consider both individual actions and socioeconomic forces affected by and affecting the mass media, and must reconcile views of society in conflict and in equilibrium. Possible effects of this fusion for mass communication study and policymaking include (1) new understanding of the mass media's close relationship with the entire social system, (2) expansion of the scope of research to include social as well as psychological implications, and (3) greater consideration of cultural differences in policy decisions. (MM)

12ERIC ED375451: A Study Of Semantics In Mass Communication Theory.

By

This paper presents an in-depth look at semantics and how it has been and continues to be studied in mass communication. The paper notes that modern communication scholars have largely ignored the importance of semantics to mass media research. The paper examines the historical roots of semantics, noting that the 1930s saw the intellectual blossoming of semantics. The paper briefly examines how semantics plays a role in 11 areas of mass communication research. The paper then summarizes semantic themes in both Eastern and Western philosophy, and discusses three general conceptions of meaning which serve as a basis for linguistic research in semantics and which are widely accepted among linguistic scholars. The paper then discusses a few of the important research projects that have been conducted in the area of semantics and how they relate to mass communication, noting that there should be more interdisciplinary experimentation if semantic research is to progress in mass communication. Contains 28 references. (RS)

20ERIC ED389018: Textual Analysis In Mass Communication Studies: Theory And Methodology.

By

This study examines textual analysis methodology as applied to mass communication studies. It focuses particularly on the theoretical basis of textual analysis, the analytical process, and congruent theoretical perspectives. Although the term "textual analysis" is often used generically, this study differentiates textual analysis as developed by the British cultural studies tradition from other textual approaches, such as qualitative content analysis and discourse analysis. Particular attention is given to making the specialized vocabulary of textual analysis more accessible and providing concrete examples of the analytic process. The need for qualitative studies to delineate an integrated research design and specific methodology to obtain methodological rigor is stressed. Contains 50 references and 17 additional sources. 26DTIC ADA482269: Mass Media Theory, Leveraging Relationships, And Reliable Strategic Communication Effects

By

A review of known mass media and social theories shows that the U.S. military may be off track with regard to how it plans and conducts strategic communication. Even though the U.S. military emphasizes achieving strategic communication effects through carefully prepared written and verbal messages, research shows that effects from these messages are unreliable. On the other hand, strategic communication effects that stem from relationships are shown to be much more reliable. Embracing a relationship-centric rather than message-centric perspective of strategic communication can severely change how communicators view their information battlespace. This research shows that by moving to a relationship-centric vice message-centric strategic communication strategy more reliable effects in the information environment will be achieved within an information battlespace that is less fluid and more manageable. While such a shift will dramatically change how commanders view their information battlespace it will ensure that more appropriate strategic communication approaches are employed to achieve positive and decisive results.

27ERIC ED294269: The Role Of Psychographic Analysis In Developing Mass Communication Theory.

By

Psychographic analysis--combining demographic and attitudinal characteristics into groups and looking at variations in those characteristics--is useful in newspaper research to expand theories of media publics. One effective segmentation strategy (used at Minnesota Opionion Research Incorporated--MORI) is to divide the population into four groups, based on relevant behavior and apparent likelihood of change in that behavior, and to use discriminant analysis to "predict" individuals who are users and non-users of a product or service. Another useful reader typology is a typology of mobility, showing how people relate to their communities and the role of that relationship to newspaper reading. A third typology measures attitudes toward media, news, and alienation from society, classifying the public into two groups--"sophisticated skeptics" and "less well informed and suspicious." These two subgroups are further defined by the variables of demographics, perceptions of media philosophies, perceptions of bias and opinion in media, and attitudes toward the media. In contrast to these audience groups, groups of journalists represent a typology which can contribute to a theory of people in the media. One such typology divides journalists into subgroups based on their age and relationship to their community. (Two pages of footnotes and 11 tables of data are appended.) (MM)
