A feasibility study examined the capability of a computer-based system's handling of technical information pertinent to the design of instructional systems. Structured interviews were held to assess the information needs of both researchers and practitioners and an investigation was conducted of 10 computer-based information storage and retrieval systems which could serve as the basis for a technical information system. Question-answering computer systems relying on artificial intelligence concepts were reviewed and considered in terms of providing a prescriptive interactive system. It was concluded that practicable generalized semantic information retrieval systems would require further development. It was further decided that the design and implementation of a natural language automated information retrieval system encompassing the rudimentary features of a prescriptive system was feasible, both in terms of the technical information resources provided and its cost-effectiveness. Lastly, an on-line interactive retrieval system was designed and a model data base of approximately 500 literature-derived comprehensive abstracts was implemented and tested to confirm the feasibility of the system. The purpose of the Guidelines is to provide an awareness of these access problems and a focal point for listing possible solutions. Section I provides an overview of disability types and the major impacts that each disability has on computer use. Section II contains a listing of problem areas and possible solutions, arranged by the part of the computer involved, including operating systems, keyboards, display screens, other output devices, mechanical design, and documentation. The Executive Summary contains a chart summarizing the problems, the populations affected, a relative priority, possible solution strategies, and the impact/benefit of such adaptations or modifications on/to the mass market for the computer. A summary listing of design ideas is presented in three categories: design features to increase the number of people who can use an unmodified computer; design features to facilitate the connection of special accessories or programs needed by more severely involved persons; and to design features to facilitate the use of computers as special devices, such as portable communication aids. Carbohydrates are used throughout nature to direct information processing and hierarchical assembly, but are rarely explored in the context of synthetic nanotechnology. Carbohydrates were explored as targets for synthetic receptors, in nanopatterning, and for directing the movement of nanoswimmers. A synthetic carbohydrate receptor that achieves the highest reported selectivity for mannosides over other pyranosides (28:1) via a unique cooperative binding mechanism has been developed. At high temperatures, a 2:1 receptor : mannoside complex forms, and at low temperatures, a 1:2 receptor : mannoside complex forms. The structures and thermodynamic binding properties of these complexes have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and molecular modeling. Additionally, Polymer Pen Lithography has been combined with the copper catalyzed azide-alkyne click reaction and the Staudinger Ligation, two bioorthogonal organic reactions, to create functional carbohydrate arrays. This patterning approach controls the position, orientation, and feature diameter of the deposited molecules to create sub-1 micrometer features of carbohydrates across centimeter-scale areas. Finally, a new mathematical model that describes the flipping, turning, and dispersion of gold-platinum catalytic nanomotors has been derived that explains their diffusion over long times and accounts for the imperfections on the nanorod structures that inevitably arise during any manufacturing process.

Three models with the potential to explain significant organizational research outcomes were proposed and tested. Fify-six organizational scholars were surveyed about one significant and one not-so-significant research project. The findigs identified several reported factors that occurred prior to and durig research projects that were related to research outcomes. The Ambidextrous model, which includes both organic and Mechanistic research characteristics, differentiated significant from not-so-significant research better than the Davis and Antecedents models. This memorandum is for your information. It discusses the communications resources which will be necessary to support the Agency's information processing systems in the overseas environment. 2. At this early juncture in the era of overseas infor- mation processing, it is difficult to accurately assess the full impact that CRAFT, CLASS A, and other programs will have on the supporting communications and security structure. This memorandum is for your information. It discusses the communications resources which will be necessary to support the Agency's information processing systems in the overseas environment. 2. At this early juncture in the era of overseas infor- mation processing, it is difficult to accurately assess the full impact that CRAFT, CLASS A, and other programs will have on the supporting communications and security structure. However, we can readily identify these general tasks: a. Development of installation standards. b. Performing laboratory TEMPEST tests of equipment. c. Conducting pre-installation surveys. d. Installing the processors. e. Performing on-site TEMPEST testing. f. Providing ongoing physical security support for information processing facilities. g. Providing ongoing equipment maintenance and repair. 3. As you can appreciate, some of the foregoing efforts involve OC and OS jointly. For example, these two offices have initiated preliminary steps toward the development of joint installation standards. Clearly, the physical security function belongs to OS; however, our field COMSEC officers can visit field stations more frequently and more cheaply than can OS officers from Headquarters. Accordingly, we are discussing with Bob any service that we can perform on his behalf which does not impinge upon his management responsibilities. The OC/ODP Planning Group has established a subgroup to develop a joint action plan in support of the new standard data terminal outside of the Headquarters area. In other words, joint actions have been initiated on those general tasks which appear to be of interest to more than one DDA component. 4. The attachment is our gross estimate of the manpower and dollar resources required to carry out the COMSEC-related tasks identified.in paragraph two above. As is evident, we are faced with a significant resource demand if we are to meet our COMSEC responsibilities. We are tentatively forecasting that 1.6 man-years will be devoted on a one time basis for the start-up effort and about 3.5 man-years annually, thereafter, will be required for the ongoing TEMPEST testing program. In addition, it is planned to meet the ongoing maintenance and repair tasks by programming for an additional four technical portions (including two at Headquarters and two overseas) beginning in fiscal year 1982, growing to a total of approxi- mately eight additional positions by FY-84 or FY-85, depending on the actual growth of :information processing systems overseas.
