Approximately half of all human malignancies exhibit TP53 mutations. The TP53 codon 72 polymorphism is a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in exon 4, resulting in the expression of either arginine (CGC) or proline (CCC) residues. In this article, we review literatures published in MEDLINE, and attempt to describe how these two polymorphic variants of TP53 are functionally distinct, and how they influence cancer vulnerability and response to chemotherapy. The Arg72 variant has been shown to be more likely to induce apoptosis than the Pro72 variant, due to its ability to localize itself to mitochondria and trigger the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. However, the influence of the TP53 codon 72 polymorphism on the risk of developing various cancers, and their progression remains inconclusive because there has been no sustained evidence supporting a crucial role for the codon 72 variant in cancer therapy till now. We hypothesize that TP53 gene might not only be involved in cell cycle control and the apoptosis induction response to DNA damage, but may also modulate individual cancer risk, and that this may correlate with the biofunctions of the two codon 72 variants. Additionally, latent factors might function synergistically with codon 72 variants to confer susceptibility to cancer development, progression, prognosis, and therapeutic responsiveness. Further etiological investigations are essential to reveal the association of and interaction between genetic and environmental factors in relation to carcinogenesis.

Our results are also related to recent works by Dvir and Gopi and by Hablicsek and Scherr concerning rich lines in high-dimensional spaces.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of additional revenues for safe school programs and services on the incidences of violent behaviors in the educational environment of a rural and urban school retrieving data from the fourth and final calculation of the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP) for the 2001 to 2002, 2002 to 2003, 2003 to 2004, school years through the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). The data for the independent variables were abstracted from the Division of K-12 Public Schools. The dependent variable and primary unit of analysis in the study were the mean revenues per pupil for each of the two school districts under examination. The variables examined were the district crime rates for various categories of offense (personal property; harassment; alcohol; tobacco and other drugs; fighting; disorderly conduct; and weapons). This study used descriptive statistics to determine the impact of additional monies on two south Florida school districts in an urban and rural school district. Comparisons were made to determine the effectiveness of state funding to combat violent behaviors in these schools. From this analysis, it was concluded that while the report of specific violent activities decreased; others increased based on the funding received; while still others had no appreciable difference. An additional finding was that money from the FEFP did not appear to cure the problem of school violence and more attention should be placed on creating strategies and building community support systems for support of schools, parents and students.

This article is from Parasites & Vectors , volume 7 . Abstract Background: Human infection with Clonorchis sinensis is still a big public health problem in Guangzhou. To investigate the correlation between clonorchiasis and climatic factors, we analyzed the clonorchiasis reported cases and simultaneous meteorological data during 2006–2012 in Guangzhou City, China. Findings: Annual incidence rate of clonorchiasis from 2006 to 2012 was 166.76, 191.55, 247.37, 213.82, 246.03, 274.71, and 239.63 (per 100 000), respectively. Each 1°C rise of temperature corresponded to an increase of 1.18% (95% CI 0.88% to 1.48%) in the monthly number of cases, and a one millimeter rise of rainfall corresponded to increase of 0.03% (95% CI 0.01% to 0.04%). Whereas each one percent rise of relative humidity corresponded to a decrease in the number of cases by 1.51% (95% CI -1.75% to -1.27%). Conclusions: We reported incidence rates of clonorchiasis showed an increasing trend by years. Temperature and rainfall were positively associated with clonorchiasis incidence, while relative humidity was inversely associated with clonorchiasis incidence. Our study provided evidence that climatic factors affect the occurrence of clonorchiasis in Guangzhou city, China.

Abstract Background: No recent national studies have provided incidence data for obesity, nor have they examined the association between incidence and selected risk factors. The purpose of this study is to examine the incidence of obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30.0 kg/m2) and extreme obesity (BMI ≥ 40.0 kg/m2) among US adults and to determine variations across socio-demographic characteristics and behavioral factors. Methods: We used a weighted sample of 401,587 US adults from the 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Incidence calculations were based on respondent's height and current and previous weights. Logistic regression was used to examine associations between incidence and selected socio-demographic characteristics and behavioral factors. Results: The overall crude incidences of obesity and extreme obesity in 2009 were 4% and 0.7% per year, respectively. In our multivariable analyses that controlled for baseline body mass index, the incidences of obesity and extreme obesity decreased significantly with increasing levels of education. Incidences were significantly higher among young adults, women, and adults who did not participate in any leisure-time physical activity. Incidence was lowest among non-Hispanic whites. Conclusions: The high incidence of obesity underscores the importance of implementing effective policy and environmental strategies in the general population. Given the significant variations in incidence within the subgroups, public health officials should prioritize younger adults, women, minorities, and adults with lower education as the targets for these efforts.

During the past 30 years, the Venezuelan Air Force has evolved into a very professional, well trained and highly educated organization. The Air Force is not only responsible for the maintenance of sophisticated arms systems, but also for the maintenance and operation of an efficient peace force. As a result of the Bolivar's devaluation this year, the Venezuelan Air Force must now continue to maintain its high performance standards in the face of budget cuts. The aim of this thesis is to present an analysis of how economic measures taken by the government have produced cutbacks of both professional and technical civilian personnel in the Venezuelan Air Force. The thesis presents possible solutions of an institutional nature which would allow this organization to meet its objectives. It is first necessary to present an overall understanding of the Venezuelan's State economic and social situation, its administration apparatus, administrative reforms and their interrelationship with the policies, standards and laws that are necessary for the achievement of those objectives.

Abstract Purpose: Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) medications represent a major advancement in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases. However, these agents are associated with increased risks of tuberculosis (TB) and other serious infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidences of such disease among tertiary hospitals in Korea. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied patients who received anti-TNF-α therapy; we reviewed serious infections including TB that developed within 6 months after initiation of anti-TNF-α therapy. Data concerning patient demographics, types of anti-TNF-α agents, concomitant immunosuppressive drugs use, and infection details were collected. Results: A total 175 patients treated with infliximab (n=72) or adalimumab (n=103) with the following conditions were enrolled: Crohn's disease, 34 (19.4%); ulcerative colitis, 20 (11.4%); ankylosing spondylitis, 82 (46.9%); and rheumatoid arthritis, 39 (22.2%). There were 18 cases (6.0%) of serious infections. The most common site of serious infection was the intra-abdomen (n=6), followed by TB (n=3), skin and soft tissue (n=3), bone and joints (n=2), ocular neurons (n=2), lower respiratory tract (n=1), and urinary tract (n=1). Of the 175 patients, only 3 cases showed development of TB. Furthermore, of all those who developed TB, none had taken anti-TB chemoprophylaxis prior to treatment with an anti-TNF agent due to negative screening results. Conclusion: Serious infections with anti-TNF-α therapy were uncommon among tertiary hospitals in Korea; TB was the second most frequent infection. Nevertheless, there were no TB reactivations after anti-TB chemoprophylaxis. Accordingly, physicians should be aware of TB in subjects undergoing anti-TNF-α therapy, especially in countries with a high prevalence of TB.

Abstract Background: KRAS mutations are frequently found in colorectal cancer (CRC) indicating the importance of its genotyping in the study of the molecular mechanisms behind this disease. Although major advances have occurred over the past decade, there are still important gaps in our understanding of CRC carcinogenesis, particularly whether sex-linked factors play any role. Methods: The profile of KRAS mutations in the Brazilian population was analyzed by conducting direct sequencing of KRAS codons 12 and 13 belonging to 8,234 metastatic CRC patient samples. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue, exon 1 was amplified by PCR and submitted to direct sequencing. The data obtained was analysed comparing different geographical regions, gender and age. Results: The median age was 59 years and the overall percentage of wild-type and mutated KRAS was 62.8% and 31.9%, respectively. Interestingly, different percentages of mutated KRAS patients were observed between male and female patients (32.5% versus 34.8%, respectively; p = 0.03). KRAS Gly12Asp mutation was the most prevalent for both genders and for most regions, with the exception of the North where Gly12Val was the most frequent mutation found. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge this is one of the largest cohorts of KRAS genotyping in CRC patients and the largest to indicate a higher incidence of KRAS mutation in females compared to males in Brazil. Nevertheless, further research is required to better address the impact of gender differences in colorectal cancer.

How much of the combinatorial structure of a pointed polyhedron is contained in its vertex-facet incidences? Not too much, in general, as we demonstrate by examples. However, one can tell from the incidence data whether the polyhedron is bounded. In the case of a polyhedron that is simple and "simplicial," i.e., a d-dimensional polyhedron that has d facets through each vertex and d vertices on each facet, we derive from the structure of the vertex-facet incidence matrix that the polyhedron is necessarily bounded. In particular, this yields a characterization of those polyhedra that have circulants as vertex-facet incidence matrices.

The Air Force is not only responsible for the maintenance of sophisticated arms system, but also for the maintenance and operation of an efficient peace force. As a result of the Bolivar's devaluation this year, the Venezuelan Air Force must now continue to maintain its high performance standards in the face of budget cuts. The aim to this thesis is to present an analysis of how economic measures taken by the government have produced cutbacks of both professional and technical civilian personnel in the Venezuelan Air Force. The thesis presents possible solutions of an institutional nature which would allow this organization to meet its objectives. It is first necessary to present an overall understanding of the Venezuelan's State economic and social situation, its administration apparatus, administrative reforms and their interrelationship with the policies, standards and laws that are necessary for the achievement of those objectives. The research focuses on the prevalence of bullying in certain public junior high schools in Texas and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) with a concentration on the teaching of character education as a means of addressing the issue to decrease incidences of bullying through the changing of attitudes towards physical altercations among 8th grade boys in the USVI. The introductory lecture will provide an overview of Satellite based navigation and some of the imaginative uses to which it has already been put. The application of Satellite signals to precision approach and landing for Civil Aviation and for determination of vehicle attitude (orientation) will be featured in the following lectures. Other topics include Quality monitoring of user's navigation solutions, the integration of satellite navigation with inertial measurements and high precision relative and differential positioning. We give an algorithm that constructs the Hasse diagram of the face lattice of a convex polytope P from its vertex-facet incidences in time O(min{n,m}*a*f), where n is the number of vertices, m is the number of facets, a is the number of vertex-facet incidences, and f is the total number of faces of P. This improves results of Fukuda and Rosta (1994), who described an algorithm for enumerating all faces of a d-polytope in O(min{n,m}*d*f^2) steps. For simple or simplicial d-polytopes our algorithm can be specialized to run in time O(d*a*f). Furthermore, applications of the algorithm to other atomic lattices are discussed, e.g., to face lattices of oriented matroids.

Methods This study was conducted among 375 patients undergoing multi-segmental cervical decompression in anterior corpectomy and fusion fixation, anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion fixation+posterior decompression and fusion fixation, posterior cervical laminectomy decompression, fusion and internal fixation, and posterior laminoplasty and fusion groups. The exclusion criteria included lack of follow-up data, spinal cord injury preventing preoperative or postoperative motor testing, or surgery not involving the C5 level. The incidence of C5 palsy was determined and the potential risk factors C5 palsy were analyzed including age, sex, revision surgery preoperative weakness, diabetes smoking, number of levels decompressed, and a history of previous upper extremity surgery. Results Of the 375 patients, 60 patients were excluded and the data of 315 patients were analyzed, including 146 women and 169 men with a mean age of 57.7 years (range 39-72 years). The overall incidence of C5 nerve palsy was 6.03% (19/315) in these patients; in the subgroups receiving different surgeries, the incidence was 8.62% in the cervical road laminectomy and fusion fixation group, 7.79% in the anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion fixation+posterior decompression and fusion and internal fixation, 4.68% in the anterior corpectomy and fusion fixation group, and 3.85% in the posterior laminoplasty and fusion group. No significant difference was found in the incidences among the subgroups, but men were more likely than women to develop cervical nerve root palsy (8.28% vs 3.42%, P<0.05). Conclusion The overall incidence of C5 nerve palsy following postoperative cervical spinal decompression was 6.03% in our cohort. The most common underlying disorder is depression, 30% to 70% of suicide victims suffer from major depression, no matter which strata of society they belong to. Most people who attempt suicide are confused about whether or not they want to die. They usually are desperate to find a way to remove or stop emotional pain. A suicide attempt is often a cry for help that ends in tragedy.
