Approximately half of all human malignancies exhibit TP53 mutations. The TP53 codon 72 polymorphism is a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in exon 4, resulting in the expression of either arginine (CGC) or proline (CCC) residues. In this article, we review literatures published in MEDLINE, and attempt to describe how these two polymorphic variants of TP53 are functionally distinct, and how they influence cancer vulnerability and response to chemotherapy. The Arg72 variant has been shown to be more likely to induce apoptosis than the Pro72 variant, due to its ability to localize itself to mitochondria and trigger the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. However, the influence of the TP53 codon 72 polymorphism on the risk of developing various cancers, and their progression remains inconclusive because there has been no sustained evidence supporting a crucial role for the codon 72 variant in cancer therapy till now. We hypothesize that TP53 gene might not only be involved in cell cycle control and the apoptosis induction response to DNA damage, but may also modulate individual cancer risk, and that this may correlate with the biofunctions of the two codon 72 variants. Additionally, latent factors might function synergistically with codon 72 variants to confer susceptibility to cancer development, progression, prognosis, and therapeutic responsiveness. Further etiological investigations are essential to reveal the association of and interaction between genetic and environmental factors in relation to carcinogenesis.

Abstract Background: Based on the necessity of detailed information that supports effective strategies to improve cancer outcomes in the different regions of Brazil, the aims of this study were to report demographic aspects and to calculate the prevalence and incidence rates of oncohematological diseases in the region of Vale do Paraíba. Methods: This is a multicentric prospective study carried out from October 2009 to March 2010. A total of 500 over 19-year-old patients were enrolled. Data such as type of healthcare insurance, gender, age, ethnic classification, place of residence, schooling, income, body mass index, new cases and the period between the first symptoms and a definite diagnosis were collected. The prevalence and incidence rates were calculated according to an estimated number of 1,319,800 inhabitants. Results: The prevalence and incidence rates per 100,000 inhabitants in the period of six months were, respectively: acute myeloid leukemia 1.5 and 0.7; acute lymphoblastic leukemia 0.5 and 0.1; chronic lymphocytic leukemia 2.4 and 0.4; chronic myeloid leukemia 6.2 and 0.8; Hodgkin's lymphoma 2.9 and 0.9; non-Hodgkin lymphoma 9.8 and 4.3; multiple myeloma 5.7 and 0.7; myelodysplastic syndromes 2.1 and 0.2 and myeloproliferative syndromes 5.1 and 0.3. Conclusion: Giving the paucity of data in this field of investigation, our data may be useful for comparisons with those of other regions of Brazil and will assist in the implementation of treatment programs of oncohematological diseases in this region.

Extreme weather events are occurring more frequently as a result of climate change. Recently dengue fever has become a serious issue in southern Taiwan. It may have characteristic temporal scales that can be identified. Some researchers have hypothesized that dengue fever incidences are related to climate change. This study applies time-frequency analysis to time series data concerning dengue fever and hydrologic and meteorological variables. Results of two time-frequency analytical methods - the Hilbert Huang transform (HHT) and the Wavelet Transform (WT) are compared and discussed. As a result, a more effective time-frequency analysis method will be identified to analyze relevant time series data. The most influential time scales of hydrologic and meteorological variables that are associated with dengue fever are determined. Finally, the linkage between hydrologic/meteorological factors and dengue fever incidences can be established using time-dependent intrinsic correlation (TDIC) approaches.

This article is from Parasites & Vectors , volume 7 . Abstract Background: Human infection with Clonorchis sinensis is still a big public health problem in Guangzhou. To investigate the correlation between clonorchiasis and climatic factors, we analyzed the clonorchiasis reported cases and simultaneous meteorological data during 2006–2012 in Guangzhou City, China. Findings: Annual incidence rate of clonorchiasis from 2006 to 2012 was 166.76, 191.55, 247.37, 213.82, 246.03, 274.71, and 239.63 (per 100 000), respectively. Each 1°C rise of temperature corresponded to an increase of 1.18% (95% CI 0.88% to 1.48%) in the monthly number of cases, and a one millimeter rise of rainfall corresponded to increase of 0.03% (95% CI 0.01% to 0.04%). Whereas each one percent rise of relative humidity corresponded to a decrease in the number of cases by 1.51% (95% CI -1.75% to -1.27%). Conclusions: We reported incidence rates of clonorchiasis showed an increasing trend by years. Temperature and rainfall were positively associated with clonorchiasis incidence, while relative humidity was inversely associated with clonorchiasis incidence. Our study provided evidence that climatic factors affect the occurrence of clonorchiasis in Guangzhou city, China.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of additional revenues for safe school programs and services on the incidences of violent behaviors in the educational environment of a rural and urban school retrieving data from the fourth and final calculation of the Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP) for the 2001 to 2002, 2002 to 2003, 2003 to 2004, school years through the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). The data for the independent variables were abstracted from the Division of K-12 Public Schools. The dependent variable and primary unit of analysis in the study were the mean revenues per pupil for each of the two school districts under examination. The variables examined were the district crime rates for various categories of offense (personal property; harassment; alcohol; tobacco and other drugs; fighting; disorderly conduct; and weapons). This study used descriptive statistics to determine the impact of additional monies on two south Florida school districts in an urban and rural school district. Comparisons were made to determine the effectiveness of state funding to combat violent behaviors in these schools. From this analysis, it was concluded that while the report of specific violent activities decreased; others increased based on the funding received; while still others had no appreciable difference. An additional finding was that money from the FEFP did not appear to cure the problem of school violence and more attention should be placed on creating strategies and building community support systems for support of schools, parents and students.

We present a technique for deriving lower bounds for incidences with hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with $d\ge 4$. These bounds apply to a large variety of hypersurfaces, such as hyperplanes, hyperspheres, paraboloids, and hypersurfaces of any degree. Beyond being the first non-trivial lower bounds for various incidence problems, our bounds show that some of the known upper bounds for incidence problems in ${\mathbb R}^d$ are tight up to an extra $\varepsilon$ in the exponent. Specifically, for every $m$, $d\ge 4$, and $\varepsilon>0$ there exist $m$ points and $n$ hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb R}^d$ (where $n$ depends on $m$) with no $K_{2,\frac{d-1}{\varepsilon}}$ in the incidence graph and $\Omega\left(m^{(2d-2)/(2d-1)}n^{d/(2d-1)-\varepsilon} \right)$ incidences. Moreover, we provide improved lower bounds for the case of no $K_{s,s}$ in the incidence graph, for large constants $s$. Our analysis builds upon ideas from a recent work of Bourgain and Demeter on discrete Fourier restriction to the four- and five-dimensional spheres. Specifically, it is based on studying the additive energy of the integer points in a truncated paraboloid.

We give an algorithm that constructs the Hasse diagram of the face lattice of a convex polytope P from its vertex-facet incidences in time O(min{n,m}*a*f), where n is the number of vertices, m is the number of facets, a is the number of vertex-facet incidences, and f is the total number of faces of P. This improves results of Fukuda and Rosta (1994), who described an algorithm for enumerating all faces of a d-polytope in O(min{n,m}*d*f^2) steps. For simple or simplicial d-polytopes our algorithm can be specialized to run in time O(d*a*f). Furthermore, applications of the algorithm to other atomic lattices are discussed, e.g., to face lattices of oriented matroids.

Aim: We aimed to compare the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its subtypes in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and in healthy women.  Material and Method: Fifty-four patients who referred to Endocrinology, Gynecology and Internal Medicine outpatient clinics of Harran University, Medical Faculty, and 53 healthy women were enrolled this study between September 2015 and March 2016. The incidence of IBS and IBS subtypes [according to predominance of diarrhea (IBS-D), constipation (IBS-C), and alternating (IBS-A)] in PCOS patients were compared with controls that matched age, sex and body mass index (BMI) criteria. For the diagnoses of PCOS and IBS, revised 2003 Rotterdam criteria and Roma III criteria were used, respectively.  Results: IBS observed in 21 patients with PCOS (39%) and in 10 healthy women (19%). IBS is found significantly higher in PCOS patients than in the controls (p = 0.022). However, IBS-C is the most common subtype both in PCOS patients and in controls.  Discussion: We showed IBS and IBS-C subtype were increased in women with PCOS. Therefore, we speculated that both IBS and PCOS might be releated with similar etiologic factors.

During the past 30 years, the Venezuelan Air Force has evolved into a very professional, well trained and highly educated organization. The Air Force is not only responsible for the maintenance of sophisticated arms systems, but also for the maintenance and operation of an efficient peace force. As a result of the Bolivar's devaluation this year, the Venezuelan Air Force must now continue to maintain its high performance standards in the face of budget cuts. The aim of this thesis is to present an analysis of how economic measures taken by the government have produced cutbacks of both professional and technical civilian personnel in the Venezuelan Air Force. The thesis presents possible solutions of an institutional nature which would allow this organization to meet its objectives. It is first necessary to present an overall understanding of the Venezuelan's State economic and social situation, its administration apparatus, administrative reforms and their interrelationship with the policies, standards and laws that are necessary for the achievement of those objectives.

We use methods from spectral graph theory to obtain bounds on the number of incidences between $k$-planes and $h$-planes in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ which generalize a recent result given by Bennett, Iosevich, and Pakianathan (2014). The research focuses on the prevalence of bullying in certain public junior high schools in Texas and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) with a concentration on the teaching of character education as a means of addressing the issue to decrease incidences of bullying through the changing of attitudes towards physical altercations among 8th grade boys in the USVI. This research was conducted to determine if there was significant association between character education and the decreasing of physical altercations among this population. A post hoc quasi experimental design was utilized to test for incidences of physical altercations between the two school districts.

We first describe a reduction from the problem of lower-bounding the number of distinct distances determined by a set $S$ of $s$ points in the plane to an incidence problem between points and a certain class of helices (or parabolas) in three dimensions. We offer conjectures involving the new setup, but are still unable to fully resolve them. Instead, we adapt the recent new algebraic analysis technique of Guth and Katz \cite{GK}, as further developed by Elekes et al. \cite{EKS}, to obtain sharp bounds on the number of incidences between these helices or parabolas and points in $\reals^3$. Applying these bounds, we obtain, among several other results, the upper bound $O(s^3)$ on the number of rotations (rigid motions) which map (at least) three points of $S$ to three other points of $S$. In fact, we show that the number of such rotations which map at least $k\ge 3$ points of $S$ to $k$ other points of $S$ is close to $O(s^3/k^{12/7})$. One of our unresolved conjectures is that this number is $O(s^3/k^2)$, for $k\ge 2$. If true, it would imply the lower bound $\Omega(s/\log s)$ on the number of distinct distances in the plane.

We prove an incidence theorem for points and curves in the complex plane. Given a set of $m$ points in ${\mathbb R}^2$ and a set of $n$ curves with $k$ degrees of freedom, Pach and Sharir proved that the number of point-curve incidences is $O\big(m^{\frac{k}{2k-1}}n^{\frac{2k-2}{2k-1}}+m+n\big)$. We establish the slightly weaker bound $O_\varepsilon\big(m^{\frac{k}{2k-1}+\varepsilon}n^{\frac{2k-2}{2k-1}}+m+n\big)$ on the number of incidences between $m$ points and $n$ (complex) algebraic curves in ${\mathbb C}^2$ with $k$ degrees of freedom. We combine tools from algebraic geometry and differential geometry to prove a key technical lemma that controls the number of complex curves that can be contained inside a real hypersurface. This lemma may be of independent interest to other researchers proving incidence theorems over ${\mathbb C}$.

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome complications are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among non-communicable diseases in the world. The onset of these diseases can be attributed to factors such as genetic susceptibility, poor diets, and chronic medications. Antiretroviral (ARVs) for Human Immunity Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have been previously associated with complications such as central obesity which is a risk factor for the onset of the metabolic syndrome. This protocol outlines the process for conducting a systematic review to investigate the association between chronic ARVs treatment and the onset of metabolic syndrome complications. Methodology and analysis: The studies included in the systematic review are selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. These studies are searched using search engines or databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, Science direct, and Embase Database. Articles will be screened against inclusion and exclusion criteria in two stages, first by the title and abstract, and second by the full article. The articles that remained after full article screening will be assessed for bias and the data will be extracted. The heterogeneity test will be conducted using both x2 and I2 tests, meta-analysis and data will be presented in forest plots, odds of ratio, and standard error of a mean. Dissemination and registration: The current protocol paper narrates the methods that will be followed when conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis about the risks of ARVs in the development of metabolic diseases, focusing on ARV regimen one and regimen two. The results intend to give an insight about the ARVs as one of the risk factors of metabolic diseases and further elaborate on the regimen that possesses a high risk between the first and second regimens. In this paper we show that the number of distinct distances determined by a set of $n$ points on a constant-degree two-dimensional algebraic variety $V$ (i.e., a surface) in $\mathbb R^3$ is at least $\Omega\left(n^{7/9}/{\rm polylog} \,n\right)$. This bound is significantly larger than the conjectured bound $\Omega(n^{2/3})$ for general point sets in $\mathbb R^3$. We also show that the number of unit distances determined by $n$ points on a surface $V$, as above, is $O(n^{4/3})$, a bound that matches the best known planar bound, and is worst-case tight in 3-space. This is in sharp contrast with the best known general bound $O(n^{3/2})$ for points in three dimensions. To prove these results, we establish an improved upper bound for the number of incidences between a set $P$ of $m$ points and a set $S$ of $n$ spheres, of arbitrary radii, in $\mathbb R^3$, provided that the points lie on an algebraic surface $V$ of constant degree, which does not have linear or spherical components. Specifically, the bound is $$ O\left( m^{2/3}n^{2/3} + m^{1/2}n^{7/8}\log^\beta(m^4/n) + m + n + \sum_{c} |P_{c}|\cdot |S_{c}| \right) , $$ where the constant of proportionality and the constant exponent $\beta$ depend on the degree of $V$, and where the sum ranges over all circles $c$ that are fully contained in $V$, so that, for each such $c$, $P_c = P\cap c$ and $S_c$ is the set of the spheres of $S$ that contain $c$. In addition, $\sum_{c} |P_{c}| = O(m)$ and $\sum_{c} |S_{c}| = O(n)$. This bound too improves upon earlier known bounds. These have been obtained for arbitrary point sets but only under severe restrictions about the spheres, which are dropped in our result. Another interesting application of our result is an incidence bound for arbitrary points and spheres in 3-space, where we improve and generalize the previous work of Apfelbaum and Sharir[AS].

Abstract Purpose: Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) medications represent a major advancement in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases. However, these agents are associated with increased risks of tuberculosis (TB) and other serious infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidences of such disease among tertiary hospitals in Korea. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied patients who received anti-TNF-α therapy; we reviewed serious infections including TB that developed within 6 months after initiation of anti-TNF-α therapy. Data concerning patient demographics, types of anti-TNF-α agents, concomitant immunosuppressive drugs use, and infection details were collected. Results: A total 175 patients treated with infliximab (n=72) or adalimumab (n=103) with the following conditions were enrolled: Crohn's disease, 34 (19.4%); ulcerative colitis, 20 (11.4%); ankylosing spondylitis, 82 (46.9%); and rheumatoid arthritis, 39 (22.2%). There were 18 cases (6.0%) of serious infections. The most common site of serious infection was the intra-abdomen (n=6), followed by TB (n=3), skin and soft tissue (n=3), bone and joints (n=2), ocular neurons (n=2), lower respiratory tract (n=1), and urinary tract (n=1). Of the 175 patients, only 3 cases showed development of TB. Furthermore, of all those who developed TB, none had taken anti-TB chemoprophylaxis prior to treatment with an anti-TNF agent due to negative screening results. Conclusion: Serious infections with anti-TNF-α therapy were uncommon among tertiary hospitals in Korea; TB was the second most frequent infection. Nevertheless, there were no TB reactivations after anti-TB chemoprophylaxis. Accordingly, physicians should be aware of TB in subjects undergoing anti-TNF-α therapy, especially in countries with a high prevalence of TB.

Generally, the technical committees of these organizations include manufacturers, government officials, consumer representatives, and others who discuss and propose standards and testing procedures. The Bihar, a state of India with 12.56 million cattle population is a source of livelihood to the poor people, but due to foot disorders the farmers face a considerable amount of economic loss. To find out the types of disorder, limb affected, breed, sex, age group, season etc, the study was carried out for 34 months in different places in the state. The result revealed that out of 2791 surveyed animals 489 (17.52%) was affected by various foot disorders. Highest incidences were of overgrown hooves (6.66%) followed by scissors claw (3.30%), cracked hoof (2.29%), bruising of sole (1.26%), interdigital lesions (1.11%) and other disorders include swelling /wound at heel, congenital defects, traumatic injury, chronic laminitis, interdigital growth etc. Involvement of fore limb was more (8.31%) than the hind limb (7.24%) and both limbs (1.97%). Crossbred animals were more affected (24.74%) than the nondescript (13.05). Females were less affected (15.72%) than males (20.16%). Adult animals (20.42%) were more susceptible than young animals (11.43%). Seasonal effect was more during monsoon (5.27%), followed by postmonsoon (4.76%), pre- monsoon (4.34%) and lowest was in winter months (3.15%). The foot disorders in cattle may be prevented with better management practices like good nutrition, housing management and health care etc.

Abstract Objectives:: This retrospective cohort study analyzed the clinical data of cancer patients conducted in a cancer hospital, Chennai to assess the correlation (if any) between use of antidiabetic agents including pioglitazone and the incidence of bladder cancer. Materials and Methods:: Totally, 5079 cancer patients’ with and without diabetes were included and analyzed in this retrospective study. Results:: A total of 1077 patient data were screened out of a total of 5079. A total of 20 patients were found to have bladder cancer. Out of 1077 patients, 31 were pioglitazone users on the drug for not less than 2 years. The remaining 1046 were on other drugs other than pioglitazone. It is observed that 1 out of 31 developed bladder cancer in the pioglitazone group 19 out of 1046 developed bladder cancer in the nonpioglitazone group. The result of the analysis indicates that there is no significant (P = 0.918) association between pioglitazone and bladder cancer. Conclusion:: In this retrospective study, the number of diabetic patients on pioglitazone with bladder cancer was fewer than the diabetic patients on other medications with the disease. Further, no link could be established between any specific drug use and bladder cancer. Least number of patients with bladder cancer was on pioglitazone, suggesting that pioglitazone alone cannot be considered a cause for increased incidence of bladder cancer in diabetic patients.
