In 2000, Ina Lowewenberg decided to explore the lives and faces of women born in her birth year of 1931. She restricted the women she was looking for to those who lived in places significant in her own life: New York City where she was born and grew up, Iowa where she had lived almost half her life, and some foreign countries. Using these criteria, she identified 15 Iowa women, 20 New York women, 3 from the UK, 3 from Germany and one from Singapore After visiting the women to interview and photograph them, she published a book of life stories and photographs in 2004. Following publication, there were reunions with some of the New York women in New York and most of the Iowa women here. The Iowa women have continued to meet, usually for lunch, with some regularity. The last reunion was in December 2013. After the December 2013 reunion it struck Ina that we have created a community of women who didn't know each other until they read the book and began to get together. She believes that the women feel this 'created' connection as much as she does. Ina Loewenberg has been a philosophy teacher, tax preparer, internal auditor, and photographer. Zenith Data Systems (ZDS) was a company often featured on ‘Computer Chronicles’ for its innovative PC compatibles. ZDS was never a major presence in retail, but it enjoyed great success in the government, business, and educational computing sectors throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. But after closing its doors in 1996, the Zenith name effectively disappeared from the American computer landscape and faded into history. Yet there’s another name–Heathkit–that is still fondly remembered today for its DIY electronic kits dating back to the 1950s. Heathkit was actually the progenitor of Zenith Data Systems. And the story of a how the Heath Company traced its own history back to a pair of airplane crashes that occurred 33 years apart provides an interesting look at how the modern PC industry was shaped by human events that had nothing to do with microprocessors. We use proper motions and parallaxes from the new reduction of Hipparcos data and Geneva-Copenhagen radial velocities for a complete sample of ~15000 main-sequence and subgiant stars, and new Padova isochrones to constrain the kinematics and star-formation history of the solar neighbourhood. We rederive the solar motion and the structure of the local velocity ellipsoids. When the principal velocity dispersions are assumed to increase with time as t^\beta, the index \beta is larger for \sigma_W (\beta_W~0.45) than for \sigma_U (\beta_U~0.31). For the three-dimensional velocity dispersion we obtain \beta=0.35. We exclude saturation of disc heating after ~3 Gyr as proposed by Quillen & Garnett(2000). Saturation after >~4 Gyr combined with an abrupt increase in velocity dispersion for the oldest stars cannot be excluded. For all our models the star-formation rate is declining, being a factor 2-7 lower now than it was at the beginning. Models in which the SFR declines exponentially favour very high disc ages between 11.5 and 13 Gyr and exclude ages below ~10.5 Gyr as they yield worse fits to the number density and velocity dispersion of red stars. Models in which the SFR is the sum of two declining exponentials representing the thin and thick discs favour ages between 10.5 and 12 Gyr with a lower limit of ~10.0 Gyr. Although in our models the star-formation rate peaked surprisingly early, the mean formation time of solar-neighbourhood stars is later than in ab-initio models of galaxy formation, probably on account of weaknesses in such models.

The importance of relating library history to the development of society is stressed. A paper published by Scottish geophysicist J.A. Broun in 1858 contained several pioneering and remarkable ideas in solar-terrestrial physics. He could anticipate more or less correctly the nature and origin of solar wind, solar magnetic fields, sunspot activity and geomagnetic storms in the middle of the 19th century. Broun applied the experimental results of the behavior of ionized gases in discharge tubes for the first time to Space Physics which may be considered as the beginning of the astrophysical plasma physics. In this context he attempted to explain the plasma interactions of solar wind with the comet tails and earth's magnetosphere. Most of the postulates or hypotheses put forward by Broun in 1858 and later in 1874 was rediscovered during the 20th century, after the advent of Space age.

Detailed models of observed interacting galaxies suffer from the extended parameter space. Here, we present results from our code MINGA which couples an evolutionary optimization strategy (a genetic algorithm) with a fast N-body method. MINGA allows for an automatic search of the optimal region(s) in parameter space within a few hours to a few days of CPU time on a modern PC by investigating of the order of 10^5 models. We demonstrate its applicability by modelling the HI intensity and velocity maps of the interacting system M51 and NGC 5195. We get a good fit for the HI intensity map and we can reproduce the counter-rotation feature of the HI arm. Our result corroborates the results of Salo & Laurikainen (2000) who favour a model with multiple passages through M51's disk.

Demonstrating the need for reintegrating women from U.S. history into the curriculum and the ease with which National Women's History Week observances can fill this need, this inservice workshop package provides a facilitator's guide and accompanying audiovisual materials for two different audiences--one for school administratiors (1 hour); another for curriculum designers, library and media personnel, and classroom teachers at the elementary and secondary level, and another for curriculum designers, library and media personnel, and classroom teachers at the elementary and secondary level (2 1/2 hours). Focusing on three critical time periods in U.S. history--1776, 1849, and 1920--this multicultural infusion model (1) demonstrates approaches for focusing on women's history in various subject areas, (2) provides guidance for introducing the multicultural history of women in the United States, (3) illustrates possibilities for curriculum expansion, (4) increases awareness of the many and varied role models available from the past, and (5) introduces resources available for exploring women's history in the United States. Each participant package contains: an informal teacher's survey; an informal administrator's survey; color-coded lesson plans, chronologies, and annotated bibliographies for elementary and secondary students; an oral history questionnaire; a textbook checklist for gender bias; activity ideas for National Women's History Week; and Community Resource Women recruitment materials. In this talk, we take a new look at the theory of disk locking, which assumes that an accreting protostar rids itself of accreted angular momentum through a magnetic coupling with the accretion disk. We consider that differential rotation between the star and disk twists the field lines. For large enough twist, the magnetic field lines connecting the star and disk open and disconnect. This significantly reduces the spin-down torque on the star by the disk, and so we find that disk-locking theory predicts spin periods that are much too short to account for typical observed systems.

This second volume of a six-volume study updates and concludes the description of the historical development of a school district code-named "Milford," presented in volume I. Board minutes remain the primary source of data with increasing amounts of information from public documents, interviews, and observation of meetings. Following a brief introduction, chapter 2 entitled "The Tangle of Administrative Succession" in the Milford School District in 1961-62, describes the year the authors call "perhaps the most significant in the district's history." Chapters 3 and 4 focus on the tenure of "Steven Spanman" as district superintendent (1962-66). Chapter 5 details the initiation during Spanman's tenure of the innovative elementary school code-named "Kensington." Chapters 6 and 7 describe the era of superintendent "Ron George" from the beginning (1966-68) of his tenure through the "quiet" middle years (1968-74). In chapters 8 and 9, the authors examine the year retrenchment began (1974-75) and the "final chapter" in George's tenure and Milford's history (1975-80). Chapters 10 and 11, the concluding chapters, offer interpretive comments, "metatheoretical" observations, a "systemic perspective" on innovation and change, an outline of "emerging and necessary substantive concepts," and a general conclusion of "ways of schooling and living." In order to protect the anonymity of the school district studied in such detail, pseudonyms have been used for all place names (school, school district, city, county, state) and personal names (school superintendents, school board members, teachers, students) appearing in the various volumes of this set. Civic leader and Southwest graduate Edward T. Matheny Jr. took a fond look at his alma mater. Matheny is the author of two books on the history of Southwest High School, The Rise and Fall of Excellence and Once More with Feeling. This event took place on January 29, 2012 at the Central Library.

This follow up survey of the 1965 NDEA history institute program (which had been thoroughly studied) examines constancy of participants' opinions about the institute and investigates some specific phases of institute experience. Objectives include answering four questions on how attendance at the institute affected each participant's: 1) intellectual interests; 2) teaching of history; 3) professional activities; 4) relations with colleagues and school administrators. The survey consisted of two questionnaires that complemented one another: a framed mail questionnaire and an interview-in-depth. A majority of the respondents indicated that the institute: offered intellectual stimulus, motivated participants toward continued intellectual development, changed the manner in which participants viewed history, and helped them to change course content and form. Fifty five percent of those interviewed increased their pattern of professional activities as a result of attending institutes. Participants judged that institutes were well organized and directed, offered valued subject matter instruction, and provided contact with other participants and offered suggestions for future institute programs.
