Counter Insurgency operations require the ability to develop accurate representations of the physical environment and the human landscape in various conditions (e.g., urban and non-urban, day and night, and various weather conditions). We are developing innovative sensor suites and processing techniques suitable for such domains as part of a larger effort to support human-centric hard/soft data fusion. In this paper, we present a sensor suite, an information processing architecture, examples of the resulting fused information, and future experimental designs. These combined resources present opportunities for creating rich 3-D characterizations of the environment and can support novel hybrid human/computer methods for target characterization, identification, and tracking.

We have been pursuing the development of image and video fusion algorithms suitable for implementation on analog array hardwares, such as the CNN Universal Machine. The research funded by this grant was proposed to test a hypothesis that cell fusion between tumor cells, or between tumor and normal cells contributes to metastasis. This contribution can be implemented by two mechanisms, by generating cells with diverse genetic and epigenetic properties, and by providing tumor cells with qualities of normal cells that are required to reside in normal tissues. This hypothesis might explain why cells tumor cells can grow at distant sites, why they express proteins that are normally expressed by cells of the metastasized tissue, and why only a minute fraction of cells released by the primary tumors form metastases. The specific aims were: To determine the mechanism of gene transfer between prostate cancer cells (Aim 1); and to determine whether cell fusion affects metastatic properties of prostate cancer cells (Aim 2). We hypothesized that gene transfer was mediated by cell fusion, but found that instead it was carried out by a retrovirus that the cells in question apparently acquired during propagation in mice. To accomplish Aim 2, we optimized production of cell hybrids by developing a new method for cell fusion and by dissecting how cell fusion induces pathways that cause apoptosis and prevent clonogenic cell survival. We also began conducted preliminary experiments to determine how cell fusion affects tumorigenicity. These experiments will continue during the extension that we were granted.

Abstract Three recombinant influenza A viruses with different neuraminidases (NAs) in the background of A/PR/8/34 (PR8), named rPR8-H5N1NA, rPR8-H9N2NA, and rPR8-H1N1NA, derived from H5N1, H9N2, H1N1 (swine) viruses, respectively, were constructed. We performed a quantitative proteomics analysis to investigate differential protein expression in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells infected with recombinant and wild-type influenza viruses to determine whether NA replacement would alter host cell gene expression. Using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-TOF MS) and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), we identified 12 up-regulated and 49 down-regulated protein spots, including cytoskeletal proteins, molecular biosynthesis proteins, ubiquitin-proteasome pathway proteins, and heat shock proteins. The most significant changes in infected cells were observed for molecular biosynthesis proteins. We found more differentially expressed protein spots in cells infected with rPR8-H5N1NA or rPR8-H9N2NA viruses than cells infected with wild-type virus. Many of those proteins are postulated to be involved in cell-cell fusion, but the full mechanism remains to be explored. Meanwhile, our data demonstrate that the wild-type virus has evolutionary advantages over recombinant viruses.

The Multi-Spectral Sensor Surveillance System (M4S) is a multi-year ONR-sponsored program to transition mature sensor and data fusion technology into existing and/or near-future airborne surveillance platforms. A study phase and on-board sensor data fusion concept-of-proof demonstration have been completed in 1997. This paper describes the data fusion concepts, architecture, and algorithms that have been designed and demonstrated in these efforts. The data fusion architecture selected for M4S is a distributed design in which each on-board sensor subsystem is equipped with a single-sensor tracking unit satisfying all the sensor-specific tracking needs in addition to required sensor data processing capability. Thus scan-to-scan, or frame-to-frame correlation is basically resolved on a single-sensor basis, and the outputs of each sensor-subsystem are typically single sensor tracks, or tracklets, i.e., stochastically independent fractions of tracks. Those outputs are then fed into a centralized multi-sensor, data fusion process that performs track-to-track association analysis and fuses appropriate single-sensor tracks into multiple-sensor tracks. In this way, each sensor sub-system provides target information complementary to each other as well as reinforcing each other, in terms of both target identification and target localization, so that the central data fusion process may produce a best picture of each target of interest. This system architecture also allows each sensor-specific tracker to temporarily lose hold of some targets but to re-acquire them later, yet to maintain continuous target recognition. This data fusion process is also connected, through an external communication network, to off-board intelligence and surveillance sources, such as Rivet Joint, AWACS, U2, JSTARS, etc., to provide the system with a complete tactical picture.

The main objective of the study is to vaccinate patients with metastatic breast cancer with a viable dendritic cell (DC)/breast cancer fusions in conjuction with IL-12 to induce an immunological response with the hope that this combination would further enhance vaccine response by promoting Th1 cytokine induction and T cell activation. In this approach, the entire repertoire of tumor antigens, including those yet to be identified, are expressed with the immune-stimulating machinery of the DCs. The fusion cell vaccine allows for induction of helper T and CTL responses by class II presentation of exogenous protein and class I presentation of newly synthesized endogenous protein. Several of our clinical studies have demonstrated that vaccination with fusion cells was well tolerated, induced immunologic responses in a majority of patients, and results in disease regression in subset of patients. This brief report details the characterization of tumor cells and dendritic cells generated from patient BV01 with metastatic breast cancer following isolation from pleural effusions and leukapheresis, respectively.

In the ninth quarter of the work effort, we focused on a) conducting experiments on real-world data sets using the developed algorithms, b) continued design/implementation of the Multiscale Heat-Kernel Coordinates (MHKC) algorithms and c) packaging for releasing the software as open source. This report documents algorithm designs for the MHKC algorithms. The project is currently on track - in the upcoming quarter, we will continue applying the developed algorithms to various data sets and the design/implementation of the multiscale heat kernel coordinates algorithms. No problems are currently anticipated.

We investigate heavy-ion multinucleon transfer reactions using the coupled-channels formalism. We first use the semi-classical approximation and show that a direct coupling between the entrance and the pair transfer channels improves a fit to the experimental one- and two-neutron transfer cross sections for the 40Ca+96Zr and 60Ni+116Sn systems. We then discuss the validity of the perturbative approach and highlight the effect of high order terms. The effect of absorption is also investigated for energies around the Coulomb barrier. Finally, we use a quantal coupled-channels approach to achieve a simultaneous description of the fusion cross sections and the transfer probabilities for the 40Ca+96Zr reaction. We find a significant effect of the couplings to the collective excited states on the transfer probabilities around the Coulomb barrier.

Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is currently being developed for applications including as-cast Nickel- Aluminum Bronze (NAB). Fabrication and repair of the United States Navy's NAB propellers involve fusion welding of as-cast NAB and so it is probable that FSP is likely to encounter as deposited weld metal as well as the more slowly cooled as-cast material. Here, the microstructure and resulting distribution of mechanical properties was examined for a fusion weld overlay, an FSP stir zone and an FSP stir zone that was placed in fusion weld metal. As-deposited weld metal exhibited a refined Widmanst tten morphology and higher yield and ultimate strengths as well as increased ductility in comparison to base metal. However, the heat affected zone (HAZ) exhibited severely reduced ductility. Strength and ductility varied throughout the FSP stir zone. The reduction in ductility in the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and HAZ was less for FSP than for the fusion weld. FSP over a fusion weld resulted in strengths and ductility s similar to those produced by FSP alone, although a region of low ductility was observed at a location where stir zone weld metal and base metal were all present.

The integration of vision sensors and inertial navigation system (INS) can enable precision navigation capabilities in the absence of GPS. Inspired from biological systems, a multi-aperture vision processing system allows for accurate self-motion (egomotion) estimation by observing optical flow across all apertures. The multi-aperture approach is particularly well suited for resolving motion-ambiguity by providing a wide field of regard for detecting and tracking visual features (optical flow). This paper presents a data fusion approach for multi-aperture sensors that integrates the vision processing into a single unified frame of reference by projecting imagery from each aperture onto the unit sphere centered on the navigation frame. The unit sphere projection allows for the seamless integration of multiple apertures into the more natural angle-angle space of the navigation frame of reference. As a first step in evaluating the multi-aperture processing strategy, algorithms are evaluated based on simulated data. The results presented clearly show the advantage of coupling the inertial system with a multi-aperture optical system.

In Phase I of this project, we explored several different approaches to Near-Real-Time Data Fusion (NRTDF), and in Phase II we developed the most promising architecture into a prototype NRTDF system. The system automatically extracts the maximum amount of information and produces the best possible tactical picture from the available data by accurately processing all relevant target data in near-real-time. In addition, we demonstrated that this system was capable of fusing large amounts of data in near-real-time using multiple-hypothesis and non-Gaussian data fusion techniques. As part of the project, with additional support from NAVAIR (PMA-299), we also developed a SH-60R Decision Support System Testbed (DSST) based on NRTDF. The DSST allows the operator to: (1) set up a scenario, with the desired friendly, neutral, and hostile platforms, (2) feed the contacts produced by the friendly sensors into NRTDF, (3) produce a common tactical/operational picture using NRTDF, and (4) utilize an operationally oriented, "unbiased", and "honesty inducing" metric to measure the difference between the ground truth data and the common tactical/operational picture. We also developed a commercial version of the NRTDF system for use in transportation, manufacturing, retail, and security applications.

The low level of mathematics performance of U.S. students in relation to national standards and in international comparisons has concerned educators and policy makers for many years. The authors' primary goals were to design a feasible and usable intervention and gather data on the promise of the intervention to foster students' conceptual understanding of whole number concepts and skills and procedural fluency. The FUSION curriculum was developed using an iterative design process aligned with design experiment methodology. The pilot study took place in nine schools in two suburban school districts in the northwest. The FUSION program is a Grade 1 (Tier 2) mathematics intervention that focuses specifically on building students' early knowledge of whole number concepts. Results indicate that understanding student outcomes, program implementation fidelity, and interventionists' perceptions of--and reactions to--the intervention has been a crucial piece of the iterative design process. The Pilot Study results revealed differential effects for proximal and distal outcomes and the degree to which measured outcomes align with teachers' perceptions of the program's utility. The authors state that their results and the resulting conversations will be useful to the team as they move forward with other curricula design and implementation efforts and as they finalize plans to propose--and conduct--a subsequent FUSION efficacy study.

Hybrid sensor networks combine or fuse different types of sensors. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors can be inserted in layers of composite structures to provide local damage detection, while surface mounted Piezoelectric (PZT) sensors can provide global damage detection for the host structure under consideration. This paper describes an example of optimal sensor fusion, which combines FBG sensors and PZT sensors. Optimal sensor fusion tries to find the optimal number and location of different types of sensors such that their combined probability of detection (POD) is maximized. Optimal hybrid sensor networks can be more robust, more accurate, and/or cheaper than networks consisting only of homogenous sensors.
