1DTIC ADA134308: Functional Area Representation Objectives (FAROs) For The Corps/Division Evaluation Model (CORDIVEM). Revision 1,
By Defense Technical Information Center
Changes were made to the maneuver control portions in response to written comments received from the US Army Aviation Center (USAAVNC) at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, detailing inconsistencies among the aviation element representations. The representations were altered to respect the baseline used for the rest of the functional area representation objectives; changes can be found in both the combat and combat support subfunctional areas of maneuver control. The air defense portion was altered to include mention of the air mobility of some air defense units, also at the request of the USAAVNC. Changes were made to the combat service support portion in response to USAAVNC comments and the results of MITRE's research into this area, chiefly the draft report Command Control Subordinate System Functional Analysis: Combat Service Support Functional Segment. These changes affected the organization of the COSCOM and the DISCOM, specifically in the areas of missile maintenance, aircraft maintenance, and helicopter transportation. In response to concerns expressed by personnel from the Soldier Support Center, non-combat casualties were added to the discussion of medical care. (Author)

2Functional It\^o Calculus And Martingale Representation Formula For Integer-valued Measures
By Pierre M. Blacque-Florentin and Rama Cont
We develop a calculus for functionals of integer-valued measures, which extends the Functional It\^o calculus to functionals of Poisson random measures in a pathwise sense. We show that smooth functionals in the sense of this pathwise calculus are dense in the space of square-integrable (compensated) integrals with respect to a large class of integer-valued random measures. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit martingale representation formula for all square-integrable martingales with respect to the filtration generated by such integer-valued random measures. Our representation formula extends beyond the Poisson framework and allows for random and time-dependent compensators.

3New Functional Representation For Hubbard Model, Coherent State And Tower Of Algebras
By V. M. Zharkov
New functional representation for the strongly interacting systems is proposed which contains a new type of the quantum coherent state. As a result the new algebraic structure- so called "tower of algebras" appears which gives the tower (or hierarchy) of models. Generalization of Gutzwiller approximation in theory of metal-insulator phase transition is obtained. It is shown that the deformation parameters may be relevant to the order parameters in the physics of strongly correlated systems.

4Optimal Representation Of The Bath Response Function & Fast Calculation Of Influence Functional Coefficients In Open Quantum Systems With BATHFIT 1
By Nikesh S. Dattani, David M. Wilkins and Felix A. Pollock
Today's most popular techniques for accurately calculating the dynamics of the reduced density operator in an open quantum system, either require, or gain great computational benefits, from representing the bath response function a(t) in the form a(t)={\Sigma}_k^K p_k e^{O_k t} . For some of these techniques, the number of terms in the series K plays the lead role in the computational cost of the calculation, and is therefore often a limiting factor in simulating open quantum system dynamics. We present an open source MATLAB program called BATHFIT 1, whose input is any spectral distribution functions J(w) or bath response function, and whose output attempts to be the set of parameters {p_k,w_k}_k=1^K such that for a given value of K, the series {\Sigma}_k^k p_k e^{O_k t} is as close as possible to a(t). This should allow the user to represent a(t) as accurately as possible with as few parameters as possible. The program executes non-linear least squares fitting, and for a very wide variety of spectral distribution functions, competent starting parameters are used for these fits. For most forms of J(w), these starting parameters, and the exact a(t) corresponding to the given J(w), are calculated using the recent Pade decomposition technique - therefore this program can also be used to merely implement the Pade decomposition for these spectral distribution functions; and it can also be used just to efficiently and accurately calculate a(t) for any given J(w) . The program also gives the J(w) corresponding to a given a(t), which may allow one to assess the quality (in the w-domain) of a representation of a(t) being used. Finally, the program can calculate the discretized influence functional coefficients for any J(w), and this is computed very efficiently for most forms of J(w) by implementing the recent technique published in [Quantum Physics Letters (2012) 1 (1) pg. 35].

5Functional Representation Of The Ablowitz-Ladik Hierarchy. II
By V. E. Vekslerchik
In this paper I continue studies of the functional representation of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH). Using formal series solutions of the zero-curvature condition I rederive the functional equations for the tau-functions of the ALH and obtain some new equations which provide more straightforward description of the ALH and which were absent in the previous paper. These results are used to establish relations between the ALH and the discrete-time nonlinear Schrodinger equations, to deduce the superposition formulae (Fay's identities) for the tau-functions of the hierarchy and to obtain some new results related to the Lax representation of the ALH and its conservation laws. Using the previously found connections between the ALH and other integrable systems I derive functional equations which are equivalent to the AKNS, derivative nonlinear Schrodinger and Davey-Stewartson hierarchies.

6Slave Bosons In Radial Gauge: The Correct Functional Integral Representation And Inclusion Of Non-Local Interactions
By Raymond Fresard and Thilo Kopp
We introduce a new path integral representation for slave bosons in the radial gauge which is valid beyond the conventional fluctuation corrections to a mean-field solution. For electronic lattice models, defined on the constrained Fock space with no double occupancy, all phase fluctuations of the slave particles can be gauged away if the Lagrange multipliers which enforce the constraint on each lattice site are promoted to time-dependent fields. Consequently, only the amplitude (radial part) of the slave boson fields survives. It has the special property that it is equal to its square in the physical subspace. This renders the functional integral for the radial field Gaussian, even when non-local Coulomb-type interactions are included. We propose i) a continuum integral representation for the set-up of further approximation schemes, and ii) a discrete representation with an Ising-like radial variable, valid for long-ranged interactions as well. The latter scheme can be taken as a starting point for numerical evaluations.

7Categorization And Representation Of Functional Decomposition By Experts
By Melancon, Paul W.
The objective of this thesis is to investigate different approaches to identifying system functions. The approaches that are described are standard functional decomposition process, Unified Modeling Language (UML), System Modeling Language (SySML), and Integration Definition for Function Modeling (IDEF0). A discussion is presented on advantages and limitations of describing and using functions by means of graphical formatting. Improving system functionality by effective decomposition is vital to robust system development. However, not one of these approaches presents the best method for complete functional identification. While each has its benefits and should be considered during functional analysis, a good decomposition has proper interrogation of the functions by means of coupling and cohesion of the functionality as well as identifying functional overlap and underlap. Standard functional decomposition works best as the first step in laying out system functionality. Rigor and completeness are improved when followed up by UML, SySML, or even IDEF0. Value and risk of each function can and should be identified as a way of posing a series of questions that measure and analyze the appropriateness of the functional decomposition. Combining these different approaches can help lead to a more complete functional decomposition and therefore reduce the risk to system development.

8DTIC ADA181476: Representation Issues In Systemic Functional Grammar And Systemic Grammar And Functional Unification Grammar.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Nigel is a large diverse computational grammar for text generation. Its framework is an implementation of Systemic Functional Theory of grammar and it constitutes a context in which the representation of systemic theory can be explored and studied. This paper surveys the representational devices used in the Nigel grammar and the representational issues that they raise in relation to systemic theory. These issues are diagnosed in the light of the metafunctional differentiation of systemic theory. Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) and Functional Unification Grammar (FUG) are superficially very different approaches to grammatical knowledge, but they share an underlying comparibility that runs very deep. FUG shares with systemic descriptions an emphasis on the functions of linguistic objects, and an explicit representation of feature choices. This paper explores how a systemic grammar can be represented in FUG notation, as a step toward creating a grammatical analysis program for English. Because FUG has been developed as a computational tool, expressing a systemic grammar in FUG notation allows new computational techniques to be applied to it. Among other benefits, this program will make it possible to study how much the grammatical functions of sentences are recoverable from them. It will also provide a method to test the amount of ambiguity implicit in a systemic description, a topic which has so far been inaccessible. This use of FUG as an alternate representation for SFG may have some additional benefits for both frameworks. It provides some solutions to problems in systemic notation which are described by Matthiessen. Several extensions to the FUG framework are also suggested by this study.

10DTIC ADA268234: Visual Knowledge In Tactical Planning. Functional Design And Knowledge Representation. Phase 2 Technical Report
By Defense Technical Information Center
A theory of human cognition developed by Professor Lev Vekker holds that human thought involves three distinct modes of processing: symbolic, visual, and kinesthetic, and transformations between these modes. A computer reasoning approach is described that combines the symbolic and visual modes for associate systems. The goal is not only to take better advantage of the human visual mode capabilities for the man-machine system through the improved visualization techniques. The computer will use the visual mode processing as well, using graphic structures and processing normally associated with rendering and image processing as part of the inference process. The technique is initially being applied to military tactical planning, with the selection of an avenue of approach being the initial scenario for prototype development. We envision application of planning intensive activities such as simulation.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The application of the category-partition method to the test design phase of hardware, software, or system test development is discussed. The method provides a formal framework for reducing the total number of possible test cases to a minimum logical subset for effective testing. An automatic tool and a formal language were developed to implement the method and produce the specification of test cases.

12Functional Representation Of Substitution Algebras
By Norman Feldman
We show that the class of representable substitution algebras is characterized by a set of universal first order sentences. In addition, it is shown that a necessary and sufficient condition for a substitution algebra to be representable is that it is embeddable in a substitution algebra in which elements are distinguished. Furthermore, conditions in terms of neat embeddings are shown to be equivalent to representability.

13DTIC ADA031972: Approximate Complexity And Functional Representation.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Results are obtained dealing with the exact and the approximate representation of a function F as a superposition, in designated formats, of functions of fewer variables. Two main cases are considered. In the classical nomographic case one seeks criteria for deciding if a function can be expressed in the form f(phi(x) + psi(y)), or as a uniform limit of such functions. The second case is also related to the solution of Hilbert's 13th problem, and deals with the format F(x) = f(phi(x)) where x lies in an n-cell I and phi is a real valued continuous function on I, and f is a function on R taking values in a chosen normed space epsilon. The use of these criteria is illustrated with several specific functions.

14ERIC ED566523: Elementary Students' Generalization And Representation Of Functional Relationships: A Learning Progressions Approach
By ERIC
In this paper, we describe our learning progressions approach to early algebra research that involves the coordination of a curricular framework, an instructional sequence, written assessments, and levels of sophistication describing the development of students' thinking. We focus in particular on what we have learning through this approach about the development of students' abilities to generalize and represent functional relationships in a grades 3-5 early algebra intervention by sharing the different levels of responses we observed in students' written work and the percent of students situated at each level across different tasks.

15Functional Representation Of The Ablowitz-Ladik Hierarchy
By V. E. Vekslerchik
The Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH) is considered in the framework of the inverse scattering approach. After establishing the structure of solutions of the auxiliary linear problems, the ALH, which has been originally introduced as an infinite system of difference-differential equations is presented as a finite system of difference-functional equations. The representation obtained, when rewritten in terms of Hirota's bilinear formalism, is used to demonstrate relations between the ALH and some other integrable systems, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy in particular.

16Emergence Of The Haar Measure In The Standard Functional Integral Representation Of The Yang-Mills Partition Function
By H. Reinhardt
The conventional path integral expression for the Yang-Mills transition amplitude with flat measure and gauge-fixing built in via the Faddeev-Popov method has been claimed to fall short of guaranteeing gauge invariance in the non-perturbative regime. We show, however, that it yields the gauge invariant partition function where the projection onto gauge invariant wave functions is explicitly performed by integrating over the compact gauge group. In a variant of maximal Abelian gauge the Haar measure arises in the conventional Yang-Mills path integral from the Faddeev-Popov determinant.

17Fermionic And Bosonic Pair Creation In An External Electric Field At Finite Temperature Using The Functional Schrödinger Representation
By Joakim Hallin and Per Liljenberg
We solve the time evolution of the density matrix both for fermions and bosons in the presence of a homogeneous but time dependent external electric field. The number of particles produced by the external field, as well as their distribution in momentum space is found for finite times. Furthermore, we calculate the probability of finding a given number of particles in the ensemble. In all cases, there is a nonvanishing thermal contribution. The bosonic and the fermionic density matrices are expressed in a "functional field basis". This constitutes an extension of the "field basis" concept to fermions.

18Functional Representation Of The Negative AKNS Hierarchy
By V. E. Vekslerchik
This paper is devoted to the negative flows of the AKNS hierarchy. The main result of this work is the functional representation of the extended AKNS hierarchy, composed of both positive (classical) and negative flows. We derive a finite set of functional equations, constructed by means of the Miwa's shifts, which contains all equations of the hierarchy. Using the obtained functional representation we convert the nonlocal equations of the negative subhierarchy into local systems of higher order, derive the generating function of the conservation laws and the N-dark-soliton solutions for the extended AKNS hierarchy. As an additional result we obtain the functional representation of the Landau-Lifshitz hierarchy.

19ERIC ED060864: A Functional Representation Of A Generalized Information Storage And Retrieval System.
By ERIC
A model of a generalized information storage and retrieval system is proposed. The model consists of six subsystems (or blocks): logical processor, selector, descriptor, file, locator, document file, and analysis block. These subsystems function in a partial environment defined by the user and data blocks. Proceeding from a verbal description, a functional representation of each subsystem is developed. The functional representation describes not only what is done but also, to some degree, how tasks are accomplished within each subsystem. An immediate result of the functional representation is the definition of a metalanguage for identifying some necessary characteristics of higher level languages used in the implementation of information storage and retrieval systems. 20Functional Itô Calculus And Stochastic Integral Representation Of Martingales
By Rama Cont and David-Antoine Fournié
We develop a nonanticipative calculus for functionals of a continuous semimartingale, using an extension of the Ito formula to path-dependent functionals which possess certain directional derivatives. The construction is based on a pathwise derivative, introduced by Dupire, for functionals on the space of right-continuous functions with left limits. We show that this functional derivative admits a suitable extension to the space of square-integrable martingales. This extension defines a weak derivative which is shown to be the inverse of the Ito integral and which may be viewed as a nonanticipative "lifting" of the Malliavin derivative. These results lead to a constructive martingale representation formula for Ito processes. By contrast with the Clark-Haussmann-Ocone formula, this representation only involves nonanticipative quantities which may be computed pathwise.

23The Bottom-up Approach To Defining Life: Deciphering The Functional Organization Of Biological Cells Via Multi-objective Representation Of Biological Complexity From Molecules To Cells.
By Periyasamy, Sathish, Gray, Alex and Kille, Peter
This article is from Frontiers in Physiology , volume 4 . Abstract In silico representation of cellular systems needs to represent the adaptive dynamics of biological cells, recognizing a cell's multi-objective topology formed by temporally cohesive intracellular structures. The design of these models needs to address the hierarchical and concurrent nature of cellular functions and incorporate the ability to self-organize in response to transitions between healthy and pathological phases, and adapt accordingly. The functions of biological systems are constantly progressing, due to the ever changing demands of their environment. Biological systems meet these demands by pursuing objectives, aided by their constituents, giving rise to biological functions. A biological cell is organized into an objective/task hierarchy. These objective hierarchy corresponds to the nested nature of temporally cohesive structures and representing them will facilitate in studying pleiotropy and polygeny by modeling causalities propagating across multiple interconnected intracellular processes. Although biological adaptations occur in physiological, developmental and reproductive timescales, the paper is focused on adaptations that occur within physiological timescales, where the biomolecular activities contributing to functional organization, play a key role in cellular physiology. The paper proposes a multi-scale and multi-objective modeling approach from the bottom–up by representing temporally cohesive structures for multi-tasking of intracellular processes. Further the paper characterizes the properties and constraints that are consequential to the adaptive dynamics in biological cells.

25Functional Wigner Representation Of BEC Quantum Dynamics
By Bogdan Opanchuk and Peter D. Drummond
We develop a method of simulating the full quantum field dynamics of multi-mode multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates in a trap. We use the truncated Wigner representation to obtain a probabilistic theory that can be sampled. This method produces c-number stochastic equations which may be solved using conventional stochastic methods. The technique is valid for large mode occupation numbers. We give a detailed derivation of methods of functional Wigner representation appropriate for quantum fields. Our approach describes spatial evolution of spinor components and properly accounts for nonlinear losses. Such techniques are applicable to calculating the leading quantum corrections, including effects like quantum squeezing, entanglement, EPR correlations and interactions with engineered nonlinear reservoirs. By using a consistent expansion in the inverse density, we are able to explain an inconsistency in the nonlinear loss equations found by earlier authors.

26Dual Representation For The Generating Functional Of The Feynman Path-integral
By Marco Matone
The generating functional for scalar theories admits a representation which is dual with respect to the one introduced by Schwinger, interchanging the role of the free and interacting terms. It maps $\int V(\delta_J)$ and $J\Delta J$ to $\delta_{\phi_c}\Delta\delta_{\phi_c}$ and $\int V(\phi_c)$, respectively, with $\phi_c=\int J\Delta$ and $\Delta$ the Feynman propagator. Comparing the Schwinger representation with its dual version one gets a little known relation that we prove to be a particular case of a more general operatorial relation. We then derive a new representation of the generating functional $T[\phi_c]=W[J]$ expressed in terms of covariant derivatives acting on 1 $$ T[\phi_c] = {N\over N_0} \exp(-U_0[\phi_c])\exp\Big(-\int V({\cal D}_{\phi_c}^-)\Big) \cdot 1 $$ where ${\cal D}_{\phi}^{\pm}(x)=\mp\Delta{\delta\over\delta\phi}(x)+\phi(x)$. The dual representation, which is deeply related to the Hermite polynomials, is the key to express the generating functional associated to a sum of potentials in terms of factorized generating functionals. This is applied to renormalization, leading to a factorization of the counterterms of the interaction. We investigate the structure of the functional generator for normal ordered potentials and derive an infinite set of relations in the case of the potential ${\lambda\over n!}:\phi^n:$. Such relations are explicitly derived by using the Fa\`a di Bruno formula. This also yields the explicit expression of the generating functional of connected Green's functions.

27Precanonical Quantization Of Yang-Mills Fields And The Functional Schroedinger Representation
By I. V. Kanatchikov
Precanonical quantization of pure Yang-Mills fields, which is based on the covariant De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian formalism, and its connection with the functional Schrodinger representation in the temporal gauge are discussed. The YM mass gap problem is related to a finite dimensional spectral problem for a generalized Clifford-valued magnetic Schr\"odinger operator in the space of gauge potentials which represents the DW Hamiltonian operator.

29Functional-integral Representation Of Atomic Mixtures
By O. Fialko and K. Ziegler
A mixture of spin-1/2 fermionic atoms and molecules of paired fermionic atoms is studied in an optical lattice. The molecules are formed by an attractive nearest-neighbor interaction. A functional integral is constructed for this many-body system and analyzed in terms of a mean-field approximation and Gaussian fluctuations. This provides a phase diagram with the two merging Mott insulators and an intermediate superfluid. The Gaussian fluctuations give rise to an induced repulsive dimer-dimer interaction mediated by the unpaired fermions. The effect of an unbalanced distribution of spin-up and spin-down fermions is also discussed.

30DTIC ADA488891: Categorization And Representation Of Functional Decomposition By Experts
By Defense Technical Information Center

31Functional Integral Representation For Relativistic Schrodinger Operator Coupled To A Scalar Bose Field With $P(φ)$ Interaction
By Toshimitsu Takaesu
In this paper the system of a semi-relativistic particle interacting with a scalar Bose field is investigated. The ultraviolet cutoff condition is imposed on the Bose field. In the main theorem, the functional integral representation of the semi group generated by the total Hamiltonian with $P(\phi)$ interaction is obtained.

34Functional Integral Representation Of The Pauli-Fierz Model With Spin 1/2
By Fumio Hiroshima and Jozsef Lorinczi
A Feynman-Kac-type formula for a L\'evy and an infinite dimensional Gaussian random process associated with a quantized radiation field is derived. In particular, a functional integral representation of $e^{-t\PF}$ generated by the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian with spin $\han$ in non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics is constructed. When no external potential is applied $\PF$ turns translation invariant and it is decomposed as a direct integral $\PF = \int_\BR^\oplus \PF(P) dP$. The functional integral representation of $e^{-t\PF(P)}$ is also given. Although all these Hamiltonians include spin, nevertheless the kernels obtained for the path measures are scalar rather than matrix expressions. As an application of the functional integral representations energy comparison inequalities are derived.

36Improved Analytical Representation Of Combinations Of Fermi-Dirac Integrals For Finite-temperature Density Functional Calculations
By Valentin V. Karasiev, Debajit Chakraborty and S. B. Trickey
Smooth, highly accurate analytical representations of Fermi-Dirac (FD) integral combinations important in free-energy density functional calculations are presented. Specific forms include those that occur in the local density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and fourth-order gradient expansion of the non-interacting free energy as well as in the LDA and second-order gradient expansion for exchange. By construction, all the representations and their derivatives of any order are continuous on the full domains of their independent variables. The same type of technique provides an analytical representation of the function inverse to the FD integral of order $1/2$. It plays an important role in physical problems related to the electron gas at finite temperature. From direct evaluation, the quality of these improved representations is shown to be substantially superior to existing ones, many of which were developed before the era of large-scale computation or early in the era.

37Feynman Graph Representation Of The Perturbation Series For General Functional Measures
By S. H. Djah, H. Gottschalk and H. Ouerdiane
A representation of the perturbation series of a general functional measure is given in terms of generalized Feynman graphs and -rules. The graphical calculus is applied to certain functional measures of L\'evy type. A graphical notion of Wick ordering is introduced and is compared with orthogonal decompositions of the Wiener-It\^o-Segal type. It is also shown that the linked cluster theorem for Feynman graphs extends to generalized Feynman graphs. We perturbatively prove existence of the thermodynamic limit for the free energy density and the moment functions. The results are applied to the gas of charged microscopic or mesoscopic particles -- neutral in average -- in $d=2$ dimensions generating a static field $\phi$ with quadratic energy density giving rise to a pair interaction. The pressure function for this system is calculated up to fourth order. We also discuss the subtraction of logarithmically divergent self-energy terms for a gas of only one particle type by a local counterterm of first order.

38Functional Representation Of The Volterra Hierarchy
By V. E. Vekslerchik
In this paper I study the functional representation of the Volterra hierarchy (VH). Using the Miwa's shifts I rewrite the infinite set of Volterra equations as one functional equation. This result is used to derive a formal solution of the associated linear problem, a generating function for the conservation laws and to obtain a new form of the Miura and Backlund transformations. I also discuss some relations between the VH and KP hierarchy.

39Functional Lateralization Of Lexical Stress Representation: A Systematic Review Of Patient Data.
By Hauser, Katja and Domahs, Frank
This article is from Frontiers in Psychology , volume 5 . Abstract According to the functional lateralization hypothesis (FLH) the lateralization of speech prosody depends both on its function (linguistic = left, emotional = right) and on the size of the units it operates on (small = left, large = right). In consequence, according to the FLH, lexical stress should be processed by the left (language-dominant) hemisphere, given its linguistic function and small unit size. We performed an exhaustive search for case studies of patients with acquired dysprosody due to unilateral brain damage. In contrast to previous reviews we only regarded dysprosody at the lexical level (excluding phrasal stress). Moreover, we focused on the representational stage of lexical stress processing, excluding more peripheral perceptual or motor deficits. Applying these criteria, we included nine studies reporting on 11 patients. All of these patients showed representational deficits in word stress processing following a lesion in their language-dominant hemisphere. In 9 out of 11 patients, it was the left hemisphere which was affected. This is a much more consistent pattern as found in previous reviews, in which less rigorous inclusion criteria may have blurred the pattern of results. We conclude that the representation of lexical stress crucially relies on the functioning of the language-dominant (mostly left) hemisphere.

41Functional Relations In Solvable Lattice Models I: Functional Relations And Representation Theory
By A. Kuniba, T. Nakanishi and J. Suzuki
We study a system of functional relations among a commuting family of row-to-row transfer matrices in solvable lattice models. The role of exact sequences of the finite dimensional quantum group modules is clarified. We find a curious phenomenon that the solutions of those functional relations also solve the so-called thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in the high temperature limit for $sl(r+1)$ models. Based on this observation, we propose possible functional relations for models associated with all the simple Lie algebras. We show that these functional relations certainly fulfill strong constraints coming from the fusion procedure analysis. The application to the calculations of physical quantities will be presented in the subsequent publication.

By Defense Technical Information Center
The overall objectives of this project were to develop approaches to program comprehension that would provide significant added benefits in many aspects of software engineering. As one part of that effort, the RESOLVE/ACTI framework for a software component composition technology was developed. The technology focuses on development of software components that can be reused and a composition discipline that helps in creating programs whose properties can be efficiently reasoned about. As another part of the effort, a device comprehension framework called Functional Representation was applied, and its utility shown for software architecture comprehension, legacy software reengineering and representation of system requirements.

45NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20100029680: Representation Of The Physiological Factors Contributing To Postflight Changes In Functional Performance Using Motion Analysis Software
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Astronauts experience changes in multiple physiological systems due to exposure to the microgravity conditions of space flight. To understand how changes in physiological function influence functional performance, a testing procedure has been developed that evaluates both astronaut postflight functional performance and related physiological changes. Astronauts complete seven functional and physiological tests. The objective of this project is to use motion tracking and digitizing software to visually display the postflight decrement in the functional performance of the astronauts. The motion analysis software will be used to digitize astronaut data videos into stick figure videos to represent the astronauts as they perform the Functional Tasks Tests. This project will benefit NASA by allowing NASA scientists to present data of their neurological studies without revealing the identities of the astronauts.

46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890007042: On A Useful Functional Representation Of Control System Structure
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
An alternative structure for control systems is proposed. The structure is represented by a three-element block diagram and three functional definitions. It is argued that the three functional elements form a canonical set. The set includes the functions description, estimation and control. General overlay of the structure on parallel state and nested-state control systems is discussed. Breakdown of two real nested-state control systems into the proposed functional format is displayed. Application of the process to the mapping of complex control systems R and D efforts is explained with the Mars Rover Sample and Return mission as an example. A previous application of this basic functional structure to Space Station performance requirements organization is discussed.

47Strong Functional Representation Lemma And Applications To Coding Theorems
By Cheuk Ting Li and Abbas El Gamal
This paper shows that for any random variables $X$ and $Y$, it is possible to represent $Y$ as a function of $(X,Z)$ such that $Z$ is independent of $X$ and $I(X;Z|Y)\le\log(I(X;Y)+1)+4$. We use this strong functional representation lemma (SFRL) to establish a tighter bound on the rate needed for one-shot exact channel simulation than was previously established by Harsha et. al., and to establish achievability results for one-shot variable-length lossy source coding, multiple description coding and Gray-Wyner system. We also show that the SFRL can be used to reduce the channel with state noncausally known at the encoder to a point-to-point channel, which provides a simple achievability proof of the Gelfand-Pinsker theorem. Finally we present an example in which the SFRL inequality is tight to within 5 bits.

49On The Correct Continuum Limit Of The Functional-integral Representation For The Four-slave-boson Approach To The Hubbard Model: Paramagnetic Phase
By E. Arrigoni and G. C. Strinati
The Hubbard model with finite on-site repulsion U is studied via the functional-integral formulation of the four-slave-boson approach by Kotliar and Ruckenstein. It is shown that a correct treatment of the continuum imaginary time limit (which is required by the very definition of the functional integral) modifies the free energy when fluctuation (1/N) corrections beyond mean-field are considered. Our analysis requires us to suitably interpret the Kotliar and Ruckenstein choice for the bosonic hopping operator and to abandon the commonly used normal-ordering prescription, in order to obtain meaningful fluctuation corrections. In this way we recover the exact solution at U=0 not only at the mean-field level but also at the next order in 1/N. In addition, we consider alternative choices for the bosonic hopping operator and test them numerically for a simple two-site model for which the exact solution is readily available for any U. We also discuss how the 1/N expansion can be formally generalized to the four-slave-boson approach, and provide a simplified prescription to obtain the additional terms in the free energy which result at the order 1/N from the correct continuum limit.

50Representation Of Functional Data In Neural Networks
By Fabrice Rossi, Nicolas Delannay, Brieuc Conan-Guez and Michel Verleysen
Functional Data Analysis (FDA) is an extension of traditional data analysis to functional data, for example spectra, temporal series, spatio-temporal images, gesture recognition data, etc. Functional data are rarely known in practice; usually a regular or irregular sampling is known. For this reason, some processing is needed in order to benefit from the smooth character of functional data in the analysis methods. This paper shows how to extend the Radial-Basis Function Networks (RBFN) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) models to functional data inputs, in particular when the latter are known through lists of input-output pairs. Various possibilities for functional processing are discussed, including the projection on smooth bases, Functional Principal Component Analysis, functional centering and reduction, and the use of differential operators. It is shown how to incorporate these functional processing into the RBFN and MLP models. The functional approach is illustrated on a benchmark of spectrometric data analysis.
