4Microsoft Research Audio 104318: Flow Control In Wireless Networks

By

Flow control, including congestion control for data and rate control for multimedia, is an important issue for information transmission in wireless networks. In this talk, we proposed a solution for flow control in wireless networks. It can be modeled as a nonlinear singularly perturbed system and interpreted as dynamically adjusting both flow rates and number of connections of users. This modeling enable us to solve the problem without changing today's network infrastructure or transport protocol, which different the work from all existing approaches. We explore the uniqueness of equilibrium rate and its exponential stability, implying the optimality and scalability of the solution. The analysis also indicates the feasibility of incremental deployment and applicability to wired networks. Further, it turns out the work also implies a two timescale framework for other flow control problem without touching underlying infrastructure or protocols. Following the insights, we design practical end-to-end schemes addressing flow control in wireless problem in practice. Their performances are evaluated and characterized using both NS-2 simulations and actual experiments over Verizon Wireless 1xRTT commercial data network. This work results in a US patent. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

8Investigation Of Vortex Flaps And Other Flow Control Devices On Generic High-Speed Civil Transport Planforms

By

A parametric cranked delta planform study has been conducted in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel with the following objectives: (1) to evaluate the vortex flap design methodology for cranked delta wings, (2) to determine the influence of leading-edge sweep and the outboard wing on vortex flap effectiveness, (3) to evaluate novel flow control concepts, and (4) to validate unstructured grid Euler computer code predictions with modeled vortex and trailing-edge flaps. Two families of cranked delta planforms were investigated. One family had constant aspect ratio, while the other had a constant nondimensional semispan location of the leading-edge break. The inboard leading-edge sweep of the planforms was varied between 68 deg., 71 deg., and 74 deg., while outboard leading-edge sweep was varied between 48 deg. and 61 deg. Vortex flaps for the different planforms were designed by an analytical vortex flap design method. The results indicate that the effectiveness of the vortex flaps was only slightly influenced by the variations in the parametric planforms. The unstructured grid Euler computer code was successfully used to model the configurations with vortex flaps. The vortex trap concept was successfully demonstrated.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19740025659: Digital Integrated Control Of A Mach 2.5 Mixed-compression Supersonic Inlet And An Augmented Mixed-flow Turbofan Engine

By

A digitally implemented integrated inlet-engine control system was designed and tested on a mixed-compression, axisymmetric, Mach 2.5, supersonic inlet with 45 percent internal supersonic area contraction and a TF30-P-3 augmented turbofan engine. The control matched engine airflow to available inlet airflow. By monitoring inlet terminal shock position and over-board bypass door command, the control adjusted engine speed so that in steady state, the shock would be at the desired location and the overboard bypass doors would be closed. During engine-induced transients, such as augmentor light-off and cutoff, the inlet operating point was momentarily changed to a more supercritical point to minimize unstarts. The digital control also provided automatic inlet restart. A variable inlet throat bleed control, based on throat Mach number, provided additional inlet stability margin.

11Analysis Of Active Power Flow Control With Phase Shifting Transformer In AC Transmission Line

By

Nowadays, active power flow should be controlled because voltage fluctuation occurred on various load conditions. Phase shifting transformer PST is used to control the active power flow in three phase electricity transmission network. It can increase reliability and can serve as an alternative to new investments in overhead lines.  The control of active power flow is achieved by adjusting the phase angle of the voltages at the PST terminals. In this paper, 230 kV AC transmission line is chosen for active power flow control. Two conditions, maximum and minimum load conditions are considered as a case study for active power flow control performance in a selected line.  Simulation of active power flow with PST model is carried out by using Matlab software. Finally, according to simulation results, system voltages and active power depend phase angles are revealed in this paper.  by Thandar Oo | Su Mon Myint | Aye Khaing Zin "Analysis of Active Power Flow Control with Phase Shifting Transformer in AC Transmission Line"  Published in International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development (ijtsrd), ISSN: 2456-6470, Volume-2 | Issue-6 , October 2018,  URL: http://www.ijtsrd.com/papers/ijtsrd18593.pdf Direct Link: http://www.ijtsrd.com/engineering/electrical-engineering/18593/analysis-of-active-power-flow-control-with-phase-shifting-transformer-in-ac-transmission-line/thandar-oo

12Microsoft Research Audio 103774: Candidate Talk: Securing The Web With Decentralized Information Flow Control

By

The recent successes of server-side applications (e.g. Google and Facebook applications) hint that tomorrow's computing platform might not be the local desktop but rather the extensible remote Web site. Unfortunately, these new server-side platforms, built on conventional operating systems, are committing the same security mistakes already ossified in today's insecure desktops. In this talk, I will discuss how to secure both today's Web sites and tomorrow's Web computing platforms with a new OS technique called Decentralized Information Flow Control (DIFC). A DIFC system tracks the flow of secret data as it is copied from file to file and communicated from process to process. In the end, the OS lets modules known as 'declassifiers' legislate policies for secret data exiting to the network. DIFC provides better security than standard OSes because it allows developers to concentrate security-critical code in small, audit-friendly declassifiers, which remain small and contained even as the overall system balloons with new features. This talk presents DIFC, an implementation of DIFC for Linux, and a case study of a complex, popular open-source application (MoinMoin Wiki) secured with DIFC. MoinMoin is a prototype for more ambitious and general work to come, such as a novel Web-based application platform with encouraging security guarantees. 19A Novel Line Current Control Strategy To Control The Real Power Flow At PCC Using H-bridge Inverter

This paper presents the power flow control between the main grid and the microgrid in low-voltage distribution network using H-bridge inverter. Controlling the real power flow in the line using the H-bridge inverter is investigated by implementing the line current control strategy. The feasibility of the proposed H-bridge inverter and its control strategy is validated by varying the line current reference. Hence, the H-bridge inverter will operate in its inductive or capacitive operation mode depending on the reference current value and the output of the PI controller in the control unit. The control strategy of the microgrid distributed generators has also been investigated in which P/V droop characteristics is applied to the power control of each DG in the microgrid. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is validated through simulations.

20NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20100004829: Numerical Studies Of A Fluidic Diverter For Flow Control

By

The internal flow structure in a specific fluidic diverter is studied over a range from low subsonic to sonic inlet conditions by a time-dependent numerical analysis. The understanding will aid in the development of fluidic diverters with minimum pressure losses and advanced designs of flow control actuators. The velocity, temperature and pressure fields are calculated for subsonic conditions and the self-induced oscillatory behavior of the flow is successfully predicted. The results of our numerical studies have excellent agreement with our experimental measurements of oscillation frequencies. The acoustic speed in the gaseous medium is determined to be a key factor for up to sonic conditions in governing the mechanism of initiating the oscillations as well as determining its frequency. The feasibility of employing plasma actuation with a minimal perturbation level is demonstrated in steady-state calculations to also produce oscillation frequencies of our own choosing instead of being dependent on the fixed-geometry fluidic device.

22Hardware Interference Of Executive Control During Flow Experience

By

In the current study we aimed to test a new measurement of the Flow experience which Csikszentmihalyi defined as a “state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it” (1990). Flow was induced through a rhythmic computer game called “Thumper”. Participants would play the game with indicating with a foot pedal how absorbed/ “in flow” they were by pressing the pedal and secondly without pressing the foot pedal (control group). Comparing both groups on their absorption and fluency levels (Flow questionnaires) and on their heart rate variability we expect to find out whether the pedal would distract the participants and interfere with their subjective Flow experience and their heart signals or not.

24Aquarium Filter Return Flow Control (Aqueon QuietFlow Canister Filter) (5841312)

By

If you have aquarium inhabitants (such as Axolotls) that don't like fast-moving surface water, such as those created by a waterfall effect from a filter return. I created a water flow diverter that you can hang on the side of your tank where your filter return is. Using this diverter, the water will be moved to the back glass of your tank instead of creating the waterfall effect. This model comes in 3 parts, a left side, a right side, and arms. The arms can be slid in/out to fit the lip of your aquarium. The left and right sides should clip in place, but you can optionally use glue placed in the upper connector hole to affix them together (I don't, but it's up to you). This model was designed for an Aqueon QuietFlow Canister Filter return on a 44-gallon aquarium, so it may need to be adjusted for your needs.

25IMPLEMENTATION OF REACTIVE POWER FLOW CONTROL IN A SINGLE-PHASE MICROGRID

By

Advancements have been made in the field of power electronics and particularly in energy management of microgrids. In this thesis, we present a comparison of two single-phase reactive power control strategies used to achieve a unity power factor with an energy management system in an AC microgrid. The first method measures the root-mean square of both voltage and current, and relies on principles derived from the power triangle. The second method is based on the instantaneous reactive power αβ theory normally proposed for three-phase systems. In creating a secondary imaginary orthogonal circuit, this control method can be applied to a single-phase system. The proposed control schemes were designed and validated utilizing a physics-based microgrid model. The model was used in a grid-connected mode scenario with a resistive-inductive load. Once both methods were designed and implemented in MATLAB-SIMULINK, the model behaved as expected for real power. Both control methods were nearly identical in providing reactive power compensation to create unity power factor. Some differences were observed while conducting transient-type testing, but they had a negligible impact on the overall operation of the microgrid.

30Simulated-airline-service Flight Tests Of Laminar-flow Control With Perforated-surface Suction System

By

The effectiveness and practicality of candidate leading edge systems for suction laminar flow control transport airplanes were investigated in a flight test program utilizing a modified JetStar airplane. The leading edge region imposes the most severe conditions on systems required for any type of laminar flow control. Tests of the leading edge systems, therefore, provided definitive results as to the feasibility of active laminar flow control on airplanes. The test airplane was operated under commercial transport operating procedures from various commercial airports and at various seasons of the year.

31Flow Analysis For The Nacelle Of An Advanced Ducted Propeller At High Angle-of-attack And At Cruise With Boundary Layer Control

By

An axisymmetric panel code and a three dimensional Navier-Stokes code (used as an inviscid Euler code) were verified for low speed, high angle of attack flow conditions. A three dimensional Navier-Stokes code (used as an inviscid code), and an axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code (used as both viscous and inviscid code) were also assessed for high Mach number cruise conditions. The boundary layer calculations were made by using the results from the panel code or Euler calculation. The panel method can predict the internal surface pressure distributions very well if no shock exists. However, only Euler and Navier-Stokes calculations can provide a good prediction of the surface static pressure distribution including the pressure rise across the shock. Because of the high CPU time required for a three dimensional Navier-Stokes calculation, only the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes calculation was considered at cruise conditions. The use of suction and tangential blowing boundary layer control to eliminate the flow separation on the internal surface was demonstrated for low free stream Mach number and high angle of attack cases. The calculation also shows that transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow on the external cowl surface can be delayed by using suction boundary layer control at cruise flow conditions. The results were compared with experimental data where possible.

37NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19760017056: Study Of The Application Of Advanced Technologies To Laminar Flow Control Systems For Subsonic Transports. Volume 1: Summary

By

A study was conducted to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of applying laminar flow control to the wings and empennage of long-range subsonic transport aircraft compatible with initial operation in 1985. For a design mission range of 10,186 km (5500 n mi), advanced technology laminar-flow-control (LFC) and turbulent-flow (TF) aircraft were developed for both 200 and 400-passenger payloads, and compared on the basis of production costs, direct operating costs, and fuel efficiency. Parametric analyses were conducted to establish the optimum geometry for LFC and TF aircraft, advanced LFC system concepts and arrangements were evaluated, and configuration variations maximizing the effectiveness of LFC were developed. For the final LFC aircraft, analyses were conducted to define maintenance costs and procedures, manufacturing costs and procedures, and operational considerations peculiar to LFC aircraft. Compared to the corresponding advanced technology TF transports, the 200- and 400-passenger LFC aircraft realized reductions in fuel consumption up to 28.2%, reductions in direct operating costs up to 8.4%, and improvements in fuel efficiency, in ssm/lb of fuel, up to 39.4%. Compared to current commercial transports at the design range, the LFC study aircraft demonstrate improvements in fuel efficiency up to 131%. Research and technology requirements requisite to the development of LFC transport aircraft were identified.

39Invariant Generation Through Strategy Iteration In Succinctly Represented Control Flow Graphs

By

We consider the problem of computing numerical invariants of programs, for instance bounds on the values of numerical program variables. More specifically, we study the problem of performing static analysis by abstract interpretation using template linear constraint domains. Such invariants can be obtained by Kleene iterations that are, in order to guarantee termination, accelerated by widening operators. In many cases, however, applying this form of extrapolation leads to invariants that are weaker than the strongest inductive invariant that can be expressed within the abstract domain in use. Another well-known source of imprecision of traditional abstract interpretation techniques stems from their use of join operators at merge nodes in the control flow graph. The mentioned weaknesses may prevent these methods from proving safety properties. The technique we develop in this article addresses both of these issues: contrary to Kleene iterations accelerated by widening operators, it is guaranteed to yield the strongest inductive invariant that can be expressed within the template linear constraint domain in use. It also eschews join operators by distinguishing all paths of loop-free code segments. Formally speaking, our technique computes the least fixpoint within a given template linear constraint domain of a transition relation that is succinctly expressed as an existentially quantified linear real arithmetic formula. In contrast to previously published techniques that rely on quantifier elimination, our algorithm is proved to have optimal complexity: we prove that the decision problem associated with our fixpoint problem is in the second level of the polynomial-time hierarchy.

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830019680: Flow Visualization Of The Wake Of A Transport Aircraft Model With Lateral-control Oscillations

By

An exploratory flow visualization study conducted in the Langley Vortex Research Facility to investigate the effectiveness of lateral control surface oscillations as a potential method for wake vortex attenuation on a 0.03 scale model of a wide body jet transport aircraft is described. Effects of both asymmetric surface oscillation (control surfaces move as with normal lateral control inputs) and symmetric surface oscillation (control surfaces move in phase) are presented. The asymmetric case simulated a flight maneuver which was previously investigated on the transport aircraft during NASA/FAA flight tests and which resulted in substantial wake vortex attenuation. Effects on the model wake vortex systems were observed by propelling the model through a two dimensional smoke screen perpendicular to the model flight path. Results are presented as photographic time histories of the wake characteristics recorded with high speed still cameras. Effects of oscillation on the wake roll up are described in some detail, and the amount of vortex attenuation observed is discussed in comparative terms. Findings were consistent with flight test results in that only a small amount of rotation was observed in the wake for the asymmetric case. A possible aerodynamic mechanism contributing to this attenuation is suggested.

42Control Volume Analysis, Entropy Balance And The Entropy Production In Flow Systems

By

This chapter concerns "control volume analysis", the standard engineering tool for the analysis of flow systems, and its application to entropy balance calculations. Firstly, the principles of control volume analysis are enunciated and applied to flows of conserved quantities (e.g. mass, momentum, energy) through a control volume, giving integral (Reynolds transport theorem) and differential forms of the conservation equations. Several definitions of steady state are discussed. The concept of "entropy" is then established using Jaynes' maximum entropy method, both in general and in equilibrium thermodynamics. The thermodynamic entropy then gives the "entropy production" concept. Equations for the entropy production are then derived for simple, integral and infinitesimal flow systems. Some technical aspects are examined, including discrete and continuum representations of volume elements, the effect of radiation, and the analysis of systems subdivided into compartments. A Reynolds decomposition of the entropy production equation then reveals an "entropy production closure problem" in fluctuating dissipative systems: even at steady state, the entropy production based on mean flow rates and gradients is not necessarily in balance with the outward entropy fluxes based on mean quantities. Finally, a direct analysis of an infinitesimal element by Jaynes' maximum entropy method yields a theoretical framework with which to predict the steady state of a flow system. This is cast in terms of a "minimum flux potential" principle, which reduces, in different circumstances, to maximum or minimum entropy production (MaxEP or MinEP) principles. It is hoped that this chapter inspires others to attain a deeper understanding and higher technical rigour in the calculation and extremisation of the entropy production in flow systems of all types.

44Control Of The Continuity Equation With A Non Local Flow

By

This paper focuses on the optimal control of weak (i.e. in general non smooth) solutions to the continuity equation with non local flow. Our driving examples are a supply chain model and an equation for the description of pedestrian flows. To this aim, we prove the well posedness of a class of equations comprising these models. In particular, we prove the differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum and characterize its derivative. A necessary condition for the optimality of suitable integral functionals then follows.

45Upstream Polling Protocols For Flow Control In PON/xDSL Hybrid Access Networks

By

In a hybrid PON/xDSL access network, multiple Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) nodes connect over individual Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a drop-point device. The drop-point device, which is typically reverse powered from the customer, is co-located with an Optical Network Unit (ONU) of the Passive Optical Network (PON). We demonstrate that the drop-point experiences very high buffer occupancies when no flow control or standard Ethernet PAUSE frame flow control is employed. In order to reduce the buffer occupancies in the drop-point, we introduce two gated flow control protocols that extend the polling-based PON medium access control to the DSL segments between the CPEs and the ONUs. We analyze the timing of the gated flow control mechanisms to specify the latest possible time instant when CPEs can start the DSL upstream transmissions so that the ONU can forward the upstream transmissions at the full PON upstream transmission bit rate. Through extensive simulations for a wide range of bursty traffic models, we find that the gated flow control mechanisms, specifically, the ONU and CPE grant sizing policies, enable effective control of the maximum drop-point buffer occupancies.

46Control-Flow Integrity: Precision, Security, And Performance

By

Memory corruption errors in C/C++ programs remain the most common source of security vulnerabilities in today's systems. Control-flow hijacking attacks exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities to divert program execution away from the intended control flow. Researchers have spent more than a decade studying and refining defenses based on Control-Flow Integrity (CFI), and this technique is now integrated into several production compilers. However, so far no study has systematically compared the various proposed CFI mechanisms, nor is there any protocol on how to compare such mechanisms. We compare a broad range of CFI mechanisms using a unified nomenclature based on (i) a qualitative discussion of the conceptual security guarantees, (ii) a quantitative security evaluation, and (iii) an empirical evaluation of their performance in the same test environment. For each mechanism, we evaluate (i) protected types of control-flow transfers, (ii) the precision of the protection for forward and backward edges. For open-source compiler-based implementations, we additionally evaluate (iii) the generated equivalence classes and target sets, and (iv) the runtime performance.

49Geomorphic Control On Regional Glacier Lake Outburst Flood And Debris Flow Activity Over Northern Tien Shan

By

Glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and related debris flows (DF) are significant natural threats in the Tien Shan Mountains. Their occurrence is favoured by the formation of new glacier lakes and the destabilization of moraines and hillslopes due to climate warming. Understanding the frequency-magnitude of these processes is essential for the implementation of Disaster Risk Reduction strategies. Yet, long-term records of past GLOFs or DF in the region are almost completely missing, which renders rational hazard and risk assessments difficult. Here, we present a unique, multi-century dataset of regional GLOF-DF reconstruction for the Tien Shan based on tree-ring analyses from six different torrential fans, and provide insights on regional processes activity. Based on this dataset, we also test whether GLOF-DF activity is related to glacier degradation and changes in geomorphic characteristics at the catchment scale. Results from >430 disturbed trees growing on six different DF fans suggest frequent GLOF-DF activity since the 19th century, which is consistent with available historical records. We also observe an increase in process activity during the mid-20th century coinciding with phases of glacier stagnation or even slight glacier advances. This means GLOF-DF activity in northern Tien Shan is inversely related to moraine-glacier ratios as well as to glacier area shrinkage rates and fan characteristics (such as slope and depositional area). These findings imply that glaciological and geomorphic features could be used for regional susceptibility assessments in the future. Results presented here are the longest, annually resolved GLOF-DF series in the region, if not worldwide, and constitute a unique dataset to understand process variability. As such, they should be used for further climate change adaptation to mitigate natural hazard and risk in the region.

50An Experimental Investigation Of S-duct Flow Control Using Arrays Of Low-profile Vortex Generators

By

An experimental investigation was undertaken to measure the effect of various configurations of low-profile vortex generator arrays on the flow in a diffusing S-duct. Three parameters that characterize the vortex generator array were systematically varied to determine their effect: (1) the vortex generator height; (2) the streamwise location of the vortex generator array; and (3) the vortex generator spacing. Detailed measurements of total pressure at the duct exit, surface static pressure, and surface flow visualization were gathered for each vortex generator configuration. These results are reported here along with total pressure recovery and distortion coefficients determined from the experimental data. Each array of vortex generators tested improved total pressure recovery. The configuration employing the largest vortex generators was the most effective in reducing total pressure recovery. No configuration of vortex generators completely eliminated the flow separation that naturally occurs in the S-duct, however the extent of the separated flow region was reduced.
