At the NASA Glenn Research Center, the Microgravity Science Program is planning to conduct a large number of experiments on the International Space Station in both the Fluid Physics and Combustion Science disciplines, and is developing flight experiment hardware for use within the International Space Station's Fluids and Combustion Facility. Four fluids physics experiments that require an optical microscope will be sequentially conducted within a subrack payload to the Fluids Integrated Rack of the Fluids and Combustion Facility called the Light Microscopy Module, which will provide the containment, changeout, and diagnostic capabilities to perform the experiments. The Light Microscopy Module is planned as a fully remotely controllable on-orbit microscope facility, allowing flexible scheduling and control of experiments within International Space Station resources. This paper will focus on the four microscope-based experiments, specifically, their objectives and the sample cell and instrument hardware to accommodate their requirements.

Tasks performed in the development of an ice nucleus generator which, within the facility concept of the ACPL, would provide a test aerosol suitable for a large number and variety of potential experiments are described. The impact of Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory scientific functional requirements on ice nuclei generation and characterization subsystems was established. Potential aerosol generating systems were evaluated with special emphasis on reliability, repeatability and general suitability for application in Spacelab. Possible contamination problems associated with aerosol generation techniques were examined. The ice nucleating abilities of candidate test aerosols were examined and the possible impact of impurities on the nucleating abilities of those aerosols were assessed as well as the relative merits of various methods of aerosol size and number density measurements.

17ERIC ED050551: Multi-Media Simulation Of Laboratory Experiments In A Basic Physics Lesson On Magnetism.

A computer-assisted instruction (CAI) physics lesson on magnetism was supplemented with slides and film loops to provide a simulated encounter with simple magnetism experiments. Two groups of students took the CAI lesson, but one group viewed the simulated experiments, while the other group performed the actual laboratory experiments. Since neither of the instructional modes led to posttest performance indicating lesson mastery, the data was further examined in an attempt to identify program weakness. Possible sequence-related difficulties were considered in the light of evidence pertaining to positive transfer. A hierarchy of "conceptual levels" was predicted for the lesson and used as a basis for an analysis of transfer effects. Although inconclusive, the evidence seemed to indicate positive transfer in the predicted manner and suggested resequencing the lesson as an initial step toward making learning optimal. Student opinion favored the use of the simulated experiments as a welcome change of pace from usual classroom activities. (JY)

21Physics Of Leptoquarks In Precision Experiments And At Particle Colliders

We present a comprehensive review of physics effects generated by leptoquarks (LQs), i.e., hypothetical particles that can turn quarks into leptons and vice versa, of either scalar or vector nature. These considerations include discussion of possible completions of the Standard Model that contain LQ fields. The main focus of the review is on those LQ scenarios that are not problematic with regard to proton stability. We accordingly concentrate on the phenomenology of light leptoquarks that is relevant for precision experiments and particle colliders. Important constraints on LQ interactions with matter are derived from precision low-energy observables such as electric dipole moments, (g-2) of charged leptons, atomic parity violation, neutral meson mixing, Kaon, B, and D meson decays, etc. We provide a general analysis of indirect constraints on the strength of LQ interactions with the quarks and leptons to make statements that are as model independent as possible. We address complementary constraints that originate from electroweak precision measurements, top, and Higgs physics. The Higgs physics analysis we present covers not only the most recent but also expected results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We finally discuss direct LQ searches. Current experimental situation is summarized and self-consistency of assumptions that go into existing accelerator-based searches is discussed. A progress in making next-to-leading order predictions for both pair and single LQ productions at colliders is also outlined.

The Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel (M6QT), the hypersonic low-disturbance facility formerly at NASA Langley, has been permanently installed as part of the Texas A&M National Aerothermochemistry Laboratory (TAMU-NAL) in College Station, Texas. The tunnel now operates interchangeably with the Adaptively Controlled Expansion Mach 5-8 tunnel (ACE) in a blowdown configuration with a maximum runtime of approximately 50 seconds. An initial series of tests to determine the quiet-flow capabilities of the nozzle indicate performance largely consistent with its former operation at NASA Langley, with evidence of a full-length quiet test core at stagnation pressures up to 145 psia. Intermittency present in the pressure signals at total pressures above 80 psia is quantified and discussed. In addition, the capability of the tunnel to support future flared-cone experimental models is demonstrated.

In this letter we update constraints on the coefficients of these four operators due to recent precision measurements of electroweak observables. We further demonstrate how such constraints may be improved by experiments at TRISTAN, LEP2 and at a future linear $e^+e^-$ collider. The relationship of these operators to the oblique parameters $S$, $T$ and $U$ is examined. Two of the operators contribute to a non-standard running of the electroweak charge form-factors $\overline{\alpha}(q^2)$, $\overline{s}^2(q^2)$, $\overline{g}_Z^2(q^2)$ and $\overline{g}_W^2(q^2)$; in the special case where the coefficients of these two vanish the operator analysis reduces to an analysis in terms of $S$, $T$ and $U$ with $U = 0$.

An overstudy committee was formed to study and recommend fundamental experiments in fluid physics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer for experimentation in orbit, using the space shuttle system and a space laboratory. The space environment, particularly the low-gravity condition, is an indispensable requirement for all the recommended experiments. The experiments fell broadly into five groups: critical-point thermophysical phenomena, fluid surface dynamics and capillarity, convection at reduced gravity, non-heated multiphase mixtures, and multiphase heat transfer. The Committee attempted to assess the effects of g-jitter and other perturbations of the gravitational field on the conduct of the experiments. A series of ground-based experiments are recommended to define some of the phenomena and to develop reliable instrumentation.

We first discuss the theoretical and phenomenological significance of the sigma meson ($\sigma$) in QCD. It is indicated that if the collective modes with the mass 500-600 MeV exists in the $I=J=0$ channel, various empirical facts in hadron physics can be naturally accounted for, which otherwise would remain mysterious. We propose several experiments to produce and detect the $\sigma$ in nuclei using nuclear and electro-magnetic projectiles. The recent CHAOS data which show a spectral enhancement near the 2 $m_{\pi}$ threshold in the $\sigma$ channel from the reactions A$(\pi, 2\pi)$A' where A and A' denotes nuclei is interpreted as a possible evidence of a partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.

Concurrent simulation and experiment was undertaken to assess the ability of a hybrid RANS-LES model to predict combustion dynamics in a single-element lean direct-inject (LDI) combustor showing self-excited instabilities. High frequency pressure modes produced by Fourier and modal decomposition analysis were compared quantitatively, and trends with equivalence ratio and inlet temperature were compared qualitatively. High frequency OH PLIF and PIV measurements were also taken. Submodels for chemical kinetics and primary and secondary atomization were also tested against the measured behavior. For a point-wise comparison, the amplitudes matched within a factor of two. The dependence on equivalence ratio was matched. Preliminary results from simulation using an 18-reaction kinetics model indicated instability amplitudes closer to measurement. Analysis of the simulations suggested a band of modes around 1400 Hz were due to a vortex bubble breakdown and a band of modes around 6 kHz were due to a precessing vortex core hydrodynamic instability. The primary needs are directly coupled and validated ab initio models of the atomizer free surface flow and the primary atomization processes, and more detailed study of the coupling between the 3D swirling flow and the local thermoacoustics in the diverging venturi section.

We report the operation of an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) capable of producing gigawatt peak-power laser pulses with tunable wavelength in either the visible or near-infrared spectrum. The OPA has two distinct operation modes (i) generation of >350 uJ, sub 100 fs pulses, tunable between 1250 - 1550 nm; (ii) generation of >190 uJ, sub 150 fs pulses tunable between 490 - 530 nm. We have recorded high-order harmonic spectra over a wide range of driving wavelengths. This flexible source of femtosecond pulses presents a useful tool for exploring the wavelength-dependence of strong-field phenomena, in both the multi-photon and tunnel ionization regimes.

First principles microphysics models are essential to the design and analysis of high energy density physics experiments. Using experimental data to investigate the underlying physics is also essential, particularly when simulations and experiments are not consistent with each other. This is a difficult task, due to the large number of physical models that play a role, and due to the complex (and as a result, noisy) nature of the experiments. This results in a large number of parameters that make any inference a daunting task; it is also very important to consistently treat both experimental and prior understanding of the problem. In this paper we present a Bayesian method that includes both these effects, and allows the inference of a set of modifiers which have been constructed to give information about microphysics models from experimental data. We pay particular attention to radiation transport models. The inference takes into account a large set of experimental parameters and an estimate of the prior knowledge through a modified $\chi^{2}$ function, which is minimised using an efficient genetic algorithm. Both factors play an essential role in our analysis. We find that although there is evidence of inaccuracies in off-line calculations of X ray drive intensity and Ge $L$ shell absorption, modifications to radiation transport are unable to reconcile differences between 1D HYDRA simulations and the experiment.
