Maps also show political boundaries, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines and islands. Maps include a legend, as well as a bar scale and scale statements (scales differ). Presented with Albers Equal Area Projection. With two inset maps within each map: Principal islands of Hawaii -- Alaska. Colored lithograph. Together, maps are 42 x 65 cm, on double sheet 49 x 71 cm. Maps appear in Special subject maps section, subsection Physical : Climate. The national atlas of the United States of America, by the United States Geological Survey; published in Washington D. C., 1970. Bound in navy blue board, with title printed in silver on both front cover and spine. Accompanied by envelope with six overlay sheets, tucked between final page and back cover of volume. Collation: [i-vi], vii-xiii, [1], 2-417, A1, A2, B1, B2, C, D. Atlas contains 770 maps and 18 charts. Includes a dedication, foreward, list of contributors, introduction, table of contents and index to map subjects. Topic covered: physical geography, history, economics, culture, administrative boundaries and cartography. In addition, atlas also provides maps of the world, as related to the United States. Maps show political boundaries, cities, railways, roads, topography, bodies of water, glaciers, drainage, coastlines, islands, water depths and time zones. Topical maps feature other details, such as history, geology, climate, agriculture, population, racial demographics (including indigenous peoples), religion, language and transportation. Some maps use data visualization to further illustrate geographical information, with charts overlaid upon the landscape. "Adapted from "About The National Atlas of the United States of America," by the U.S. Geological Survey: The National Atlas of the United States of America was published in 1970. It was designed to be of practical use to decision makers in government and business, and for planners and research scholars as well as others needing to visualize country-wide distributional patterns and relationships between environmental phenomena and human activities. The National Atlas represents the principal characteristics of the country in 1970, including its physical features, historical evolution, economic activities, sociocultural conditions, administrative subdivisions, and place in world affairs. Various federal agencies, professional organizations, and commercial firms had advocated producing a National Atlas of the United States of America, but the magnitude of the task and the scope of the research required deterred those who would begin it. Late in 1954, the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council established a Committee on the National Atlas of the United States, with representatives from several federal mapmaking agencies. The committee's primary responsibilities were to coordinate all federal agencies that would be involved in producing the atlas and to ensure uniform quality in its cartography. This proved to be a nearly impossible task, and consequently in 1961 the committee terminated itself. In so doing it recommended that the atlas be completed by one federal agency, preferably the Geological Survey in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In March of 1961, the Secretary of the Interior accepted the challenge. Congress appropriated funds to begin work on the National Atlas in 1963, and on reimbursable loan the Library of Congress made available the chief of its Geography and Map Division, Dr. Arch C. Gerlach, to serve as editor. Eighty-four agencies and bureaus appointed liaison officers to the National Atlas Project, base maps were prepared at four scales, and an advisory group of eminent cartographers and geographers collaborated to formulate fundamental design principles and specifications. The first part of the National Atlas is devoted to general reference maps that contain most of the forty-one thousand place names recorded in the index. These maps were included for the convenience of readers wanting basic locational information. In the thematic section of the National Atlas, separate subdivisions deal with the country's physical, historical, economic, and socio-cultural characteristics. The maps in this portion of the atlas represent the relationships between human beings and their environment while offering scientific bases for analyzing the nation's economic development in 1970. The National Atlas proved to be the last paper atlas of this magnitude produced by the federal government."

33Toxic Truths - Environmental Justice And Citizen Science In A Post-truth Age
This book examines the relationship between environmental justice and citizen science, focusing on enduring issues and new challenges in a post-truth age. Debates over science, facts, and values have always been pivotal within environmental justice struggles. For decades, environmental justice activists have campaigned against the misuses of science, while at the same time engaging in community-led citizen science. However, post-truth politics has threatened science itself. This book makes the case for the importance of science, knowledge, and data that are produced by and for ordinary people living with environmental risks and hazards. The international, interdisciplinary contributions range from grassroots environmental justice struggles in American hog country and contaminated indigenous communities, to local environmental controversies in Spain and China, to questions about “knowledge justice,” citizenship, participation, and data in citizen science surrounding toxicity. The book features inspiring studies of community-based participatory environmental health and justice research; different ways of sensing, witnessing, and interpreting environmental injustice; political strategies for seeking environmental justice; and ways of expanding the concepts and forms of engagement of citizen science around the world. While the book will be of critical interest to specialists in social and environmental sciences, it will also be accessible to graduate and postgraduate audiences. More broadly, the book will appeal to members of the public interested in social justice issues, as well as community members who are thinking about participating in citizen science and activism. Toxic Truths includes distinguished contributing authors in the field of environmental justice, alongside cutting-edge research from emerging scholars and community activists.

35DTIC ADA438833: Future Science Direction: Environmental Information Science Plan
By Defense Technical Information Center
Increasingly, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists are called upon to develop fundamental understanding of inherently complex environmental systems and processes. Their objectives are to use this understanding to develop more accurate and meaningful models, assessments, forecasts, and predictions of how these complex systems and processes may react to specific natural changes and human alterations. A fundamental USGS goal is to effectively communicate this increased knowledge and understanding of complex systems to support society in meaningful ways. The complexity and diversity of the earth and biological systems and processes we seek to understand lead directly to a set of significant scientific challenges in how we acquire, interpret, and communicate the information represented or contained in these systems and processes. Many physical, chemical, and biological systems and processes from DNA to entire ecosystems can be most effectively elucidated and understood when viewed as systems of information and computational elements. It follows that the concepts, principles, and techniques of information/computer science can be used in an interdisciplinary way with our natural science capabilities to help USGS scientists solve formidable natural science research problems and to better communicate complex concepts. This is the realm of Environmental Information Science.

37ERIC ED470136: Brownfield Action: An Integrated Environmental Science Simulation Experience For Undergraduates.
By ERIC
This paper presents the results of three years of development and evaluation of a CD-ROM/Web hybrid simulation known as Brownfield Action for an introductory environmental science course at an independent college for women in the northeastern United States. Brownfield Action is a simulation that provides a learning environment for developing the skills of an environmental site investigator by placing students in a virtual town and asking them to serve as consultants to a real estate developer who wants to avoid purchasing potentially contaminated land. Students must become actively involved in the lecture and laboratory in order to succeed. They work collaboratively with a partner in order to reach a valid conclusion. Results are summarized as follows. Students learned more and in greater depth using Brownfield Action than in previous years without it; student work looked more authentic and professional, closer to what would be expected of a professional performing these tasks; students appreciated how the simulation contributed to their understanding of the material; Brownfield Action was successful in enhancing the scientific literacy of students, facilitating their construction of new meaning based upon what they saw and experienced, and enhancing practices leading to increased student learning; students' abilities to construct new meaning based upon what they saw and experienced were expanded; students found the content useful and the simulation a good way to learn it; more staff development is necessary to foster the teaching strategies needed for a true discovery process and to build comfort with technology; minor technical glitches created levels of frustration that interfered with its ability to meet its educational potential, however students gave high ratings to other features of the technology, and in particular, eight out of ten students noted the ease with which it was possible to move through information in each of the sections of the simulation. In all, the project has proved successful in providing students with a more integrated science experience than in traditional classrooms. (AEF)

38ERIC ED100667: Life Science, Environmental Education Guide.
By ERIC
This life science guide is one of a series of guides, K-12, that were developed by teachers to help introduce environmental education into the total curriculum. The materials contained in the guide are supplementary, and designed to aid the science teacher in providing the kinds of experiences needed by students to gain an understanding of the environmental life processes. The guide contains a series of episodes (minilessons) that are built around 12 major environmental concepts that form a framework for each grade or subject area, as well as for the entire K-12 program. Although the same concepts are used throughout the K-12 program, emphasis is placed on different aspects of each concept at different grade levels or subject areas. This guide focuses on aspects such as succession, ecosystems, and the food chain. Most of the 12 concepts are covered in one of the episodes contained in the guide. Further, each episode offers subject area integration, subject area activities, interdisciplinary activities, cognitive and affective behavioral objectives, and suggested references and resource materials useful to teachers and students. 39ERIC ED118347: Environmental Education In The Elementary School. A Selection Of Articles Reprinted From Science And Children.
By ERIC
Included in this document are a selection of articles reprinted from SCIENCE AND CHILDREN. They focus on environmental education in the elementary school, and present a number of environmental perspectives. Those concerning general or background information are: an examination of environmental education: children's attitudes about the environment; teaching resources in the national parks; and a school/community effort to preserve an urban environmental study area. Ecology is treated through investigations at the individual level, populations of one species, communities, and ecosystems. Adapting traditional activities to an ecological approach, emphasizing concepts of interaction and change, is suggested. Earth science experiences to increase awareness of the child's own and natural enviornment center on site experiences. They focus on analyzing small parts of a larger environemnt--investigating change, age, movement, erosion, deposition, etc. The field trip is presented utilizing a conceptual approach to develop environmental relationships. Suggested activities for children for observing their town as a man-dominated biotic community are examining construction, tree identification, soil samples, zoo trips, food chains, and succession. A calendar for teaching conservation activities is constructed. One article is devoted to the associations between nature and creativity. References are included following some articles. (BP)

42Spit For Science: Launching A Longitudinal Study Of Genetic And Environmental Influences On Substance Use And Emotional Health At A Large US University.
By Dick, Danielle M., Nasim, Aashir, Edwards, Alexis C., Salvatore, Jessica E., Cho, Seung B., Adkins, Amy, Meyers, Jacquelyn, Yan, Jia, Cooke, Megan, Clifford, James, Goyal, Neeru, Halberstadt, Lisa, Ailstock, Kimberly, Neale, Zoe, Opalesky, Jill, Hancock, Linda, Donovan, Kristen K., Sun, Cuie, Riley, Brien and Kendler, Kenneth S.
This article is from Frontiers in Genetics , volume 5 . Abstract Finding genes involved in complex behavioral outcomes, and understanding the pathways by which they confer risk, is a challenging task, necessitating large samples that are phenotypically well characterized across time. We describe an effort to create a university-wide research project aimed at understanding how genes and environments impact alcohol use and related substance use and mental health outcomes across time in college students. Nearly 70% of the incoming freshman class (N = 2715) completed on-line surveys, with 80% of the students from the fall completing spring follow-ups. 98% of eligible participants also gave DNA. The participants closely approximated the university population in terms of gender and racial/ethnic composition. Here we provide initial results on alcohol use outcomes from the first wave of the sample, as well as associated predictor variables. We discuss the potential for this kind of research to advance our understanding of genetic and environment influences on substance use and mental health outcomes.

45DTIC ADA449962: Algorithm Science To Operations For The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)
By Defense Technical Information Center
The VIIRS sensor provides measurements for 22 Environmental Data Records (EDRs) addressing the atmosphere, ocean surface temperature, ocean color, land parameters, aerosols, imaging for clouds and ice, and more. That is, the VIIRS collects visible and infrared radiometric data of the Earth's atmosphere, ocean, and land surfaces. Data types include atmospheric, clouds, Earth radiation budget, land/water and sea surface temperature, ocean color, and low light imagery. This wide scope of measurements calls for the preparation of a multiplicity of Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBDs), and, additionally, for intermediate products such as cloud mask, et al. Furthermore, the VIIRS interacts with three or more other sensors. This paper addresses selected and crucial elements of the process being used to convert and test an immense volume of a maturing and changing science code to the initial operational source code in preparation for launch of NPP. The integrity of the original science code is maintained and enhanced via baseline comparisons when re-hosted, in addition to multiple planned code performance reviews.

Thirteen physical maps representing the United States, featuring the monthly mean for maximum temperature, as well as the monthly maximum temperature for each month of the year, based upon the period from 1931 to 1960.
