Program Summary: The WLMR Design Challenge is a competition in which students must create a water recycling system that can be used by astronauts living on other planets. Twenty-one middle school teams competed in the challenge's inaugural year. Objective: Teams must design, construct and test a water recycling system on a simulated wastewater stream. They then submit a proposal and their results to NASA for review. Time Frame: After nearly nine months of competition, NASA judges selected the team from the West Fargo School District team from North Dakota as the winner. Application: The WLMR design challenge gives students the opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to solve a problem, just as a NASA scientist would, preparing them for future STEM education and careers. Green Engineering is the study of product and process design for environmental friendliness without compromising product quality and commercial viability. The aim is to identify, develop, and exploit new technologies that can bolster productivity without costing the environment. This is one of the challenges engineers will face in the coming century. Over the past decade, a lot of research and effort has been put into understanding issues such as waste management, materials recovery, and HazMin (Minimization of Hazardous materials and practices) as they relate to products after they enter the waste stream. Attention should also be focused on the product design itself. The idea is to inject concerns about environmental friendliness into the design process; where, the assessment of environmental friendliness is based on a life cycle view of the product. This includes the product's manufacturing process, distribution, use, and final disposal.

The handbook is devoted to a discussion of body and hull design for military land vehicles of all types. Its principal objectives are (1) to orient design personnel in the requirements prescribed for the bodies and hulls of military land vehicles, (2) to discuss the various considerations, problem areas, and procedures involved in effecting a body design that will meet these requirements, and (3) to present design criteria in the form of formulas, charts, and tables of quantitative data useful in the design of military automotive bodies.

The Children Designing & Engineering (CD&E) Project at the College of New Jersey is a collaborative effort of the College's Center for Design and Technology and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce. The Project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has been charged to develop instructional materials for grades K-5. The twelve thematic units under development integrate science, mathematics, technology and other content through design-and-make activities. Activities are coordinated with both state and national standards and are situated within contexts inspired by seven New Jersey businesses. Project staff members are also attempting to explore how design-based activities can provide an early orientation to skills and attitudes sought by employers. The CD&E project began in 1998 as a three-year effort to help elementary teachers incorporate design and technology into their teaching. Project collaborators from the College of New Jersey and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce joined forces to design real-world, developmentally appropriate instructional units that would communicate the unique nature of technological pursuits and harness the inherent appeal of design activity as a vehicle for learning. The approach taken to the CD&E units draws on research from a wide range of current educational orientations, with the most notable among these found in the literature on contextual learning and problem-based learning. Underlying the materials is a general constructivist perspective, and units feature elements of authentic assessment and cooperative learning. Theories about workplace contexts, learning styles, and multiple intelligences have also informed the design decisions. In this article, the author describes how the CD&E project applies theories of contextual learning, problem-based learning, and Design and Technology (D&T) education to create an amalgam of the three which project collaborators call Design & Technology-Based Contextual Learning. The intent of this report is to identify and assess the potential visual-cultural and design impacts resulting from the implementation of any of five regional concepts for wastewater treatment within the Boston Harbor - Eastern Massachusetts Metropolitan Area (BH-EMMA). In reality, this study will probably raise more issues and questions than it will address and attempt to answer. On its own, its value in determining either the need and/or desirability of a regional approach to wastewater management, or the selection of one concept over another, is minimum. The full value of this study cannot be realized until it is used in combination with other assessments as part of an overall screening and review process.

While the clinical importance of CT to the DEPMEDS system is well- established, this is only half the story. For a CT scanner to gain acceptance within the military, it must be, and remain, reliable. It must withstand extended storage at environmental extremes; it must be transportable by air, sea, and land (by truck over unimproved roads and by rail); and it must operate with minimal set-up time and without benefit of such niceties as clean air or heat. It must also not pose an unacceptable logistical burden in terms of weight, size, or power requirements. Most importantly, however, it must be capable of quickly handling a mass casualty situation without itself becoming the bottleneck in the treatment process. Finally, the CT system capable of handling these difficult and diverse requirements must be comparable in cost to commercial CT scanners designed for handling a modest and carefully scheduled case load under the most benign of environmental conditions. The major factors which influence the economic engineering selection of stack inlet temperatures in combined cycle MHD powerplants are identified and the range of suitable stack inlet temperatures under typical operating conditions is indicated. Engineering data and cost estimates are provided for four separately fired high temperature air heater (HTAH) system designs for HTAH system thermal capacity levels of 100, 250, 500 and 1000 MWt. An engineering survey of coal drying and pulverizing equipment for MHD powerplant application is presented as well as capital and operating cost estimates for varying degrees of coal pulverization.

The Index is a reference list of non-government Human Systems/Human Engineering standardization documents. Since the designation of documents as standards by non-government standards bodies tends to be somewhat flexible, the scope of non-government standards for the Index was kept quite loose and includes standards, specifications, recommended practices, codes, guides, handbooks, etc. The Index also lists draft standards, standardization organizations, and where to obtain the documents.

Engineers working to understand and reduce cryogenic boil-off must solve a. variety of transport problems. An important class of nonlinear problems involves the thermal and mechanical design of cryogenic struts. These classic problems are scattered about the literature and typically require too many resources to obtain. So, to save time for practicing engineers, the author presents this essay. Herein, a variety of new, old, and revisited analytical and finite difference solutions of the thermal problem are covered in this essay, along with commentary on approach and assumptions, This includes a few thermal radiation and conduction combined mode solution with a discussion on insulation, optimum emissivity, and geometrical phenomenon. Solutions to cooling and heat interception problems are also presented, including a discussion of the entropy generation. And the literature on the combined mechanical and thermal design of cryogenic support struts is reviewed with an introduction to the associated numerical methods.

This project is concerned with creativity in engineering design. Both expert designers and inexperienced subjects are being processed; after tests of learning style, both groups perform (1) an individual design task (constructing and electronic analogue simulator for demonstrating aspects of reaction kinetics), and (2) a team task. Section 2 discusses one method for comparing data about design behavior which is obtained during analytic sessions, using a man machine interface, after each design session; this data is an on-line, non-verbally elicited, explanation of how and why a subject produces his design. Most subjects also explain how their design relates to operation in an application domain. Section 3 exemplifies the type of personal and interpersonal design evaluation, using 4 criterion variables, which all subjects are required to furnish at the end of the design task. Descriptions of each design and its standard-format explanation (which includes reference to the application domain, in this case, physical chemistry) are elicited from, and exchanged between, subjects. The technique can be extended to members of an evaluation team presented with alternative designs (satisfying the same brief) and the standard-form explanations which relate them to an application domain. It is believed that the extended technique could provide a potentially useful method for evaluating alternative designs of any kind.

This study contextualized the use of the engineering design process by providing descriptions of how each element in a design process was integrated in an eleventh grade industry and engineering systems course. The guiding research question for this inquiry was: How do students engage in the engineering design process in a course where technology and engineering intersect? Data to address this question were collected during six weeks of observation and discussions with students at a suburban high school of 1500 students. Additional data were obtained from student and teacher generated documents, such as lesson plans, handouts, student journals, reports and presentations. This study assumed six critical elements of engineering design: problem definition, development of solutions, analysis/modeling, experimentation, decision making and teamwork. These six elements of an iterative process were derived from a review of engineering design literature and became a lens through which the classroom learning experiences were viewed. Evident in the observations was the theme of student transition from teacher driven problems with narrow boundaries, to student driven problem definition with wide boundaries. In this research, projects started as small individual activities early in the fall term. As the semester progressed, projects became more complex, and a necessity for teamwork emerged. Each activity in the fall provided students with experience and skills in areas of engineering design and material fabrication. This preparation provided a conceptual and practical foundation for the open-ended spring design challenge. (Contains 4 figures and 2 tables.)

On the instruction of the Council of Ontario Universities, the Advisory Committee on Academic Planning in cooperation with the Committee of Ontario Deans of Engineering has conducted a planning assessment for doctoral work in industrial engineering and systems design. Recommendations for doctoral work in engineering studies are presented. Following these recommendations the consultants report on industrial engineering and systems design is presented. This report discusses the evolution and development of industrial engineering, industrial engineering in Ontario and Canada, and the demand for industrial engineers. Three universities, the University of Toronto, University of Windsor, and the University of Waterloo, are discussed in relation to the nature of programs offered, faculty quality and size, quality of student body, physical facilities, and recommendation. Tumpar is embroidery from the Dayak tribe in East Kalimantan, Indonesia and has a unique motif. This study uses the Kansei Engineering method. The purpose of the Kansei Engineering method is to translate the image of consumers or consumer feelings into real design components in order to obtain flexible bag product specifications according to consumer desires. The objects observed were 55 men respondents who were given an online questionnaire due to the Covid 19 pandemic situation. From the the result of SPSS 25 abaout analysis factors that influence the design of men's casual bags, it is concluded that ergonomic factors and innovative factors greatly influence the design of the bag. The specification of ergonomics are small size, sling bag mode, light weight, netral color and need space to put personal items. The specification of innovative are simple but unique design, material from a combination of leather and natural materials, and regional cultural elements.

Context: For many years, we have observed industry struggling in defining a high quality requirements engineering (RE) and researchers trying to understand industrial expectations and problems. Although we are investigating the discipline with a plethora of empirical studies, those studies either concentrate on validating specific methods or on single companies or countries. Therefore, they allow only for limited empirical generalisations. Objective: To lay an empirical and generalisable foundation about the state of the practice in RE, we aim at a series of open and reproducible surveys that allow us to steer future research in a problem-driven manner. Method: We designed a globally distributed family of surveys in joint collaborations with different researchers from different countries. The instrument is based on an initial theory inferred from available studies. As a long-term goal, the survey will be regularly replicated to manifest a clear understanding on the status quo and practical needs in RE. In this paper, we present the design of the family of surveys and first results of its start in Germany. Results: Our first results contain responses from 30 German companies. The results are not yet generalisable, but already indicate several trends and problems. For instance, a commonly stated problem respondents see in their company standards are artefacts being underrepresented, and important problems they experience in their projects are incomplete and inconsistent requirements. Conclusion: The results suggest that the survey design and instrument are well-suited to be replicated and, thereby, to create a generalisable empirical basis of RE in practice.

Mathematical models used in design of the XM204 soft recoil Howitzer (advanced and engineering development prototypes) are described. The physical basis for the mathematical representation is presented along with the derivation of the required equations. While these models have been generalized to allow their use in other weapon design situations, some modification will be necessary to include features not specifically considered. Systems of equations which will provide for the definition of required control functions as well as the prediction of recoil mechanism functioning and weapon motions are summarized.

A brief examination and comparison of mathematics and technology education provides the background for a discussion of integration. In particular, members of each field have responded to the increasing pressures to better prepare students for the technologically rich, globally competitive future. Approaches based within each discipline are varied across curriculum and instructional strategies. However, when examining the disciplines' historical paths, there are important similarities to consider in determining how best to affect student learning in both mathematics and technology education. The authors contend that engineering design is the appropriate contextual area for integrating mathematics in technology education.

Alternative methods for cost estimation are important in the early conceptual stages of a design when there is not enough detail to allow for a traditional quantity takeoff estimate to be performed. Much of the budgeting process takes place during the early stages of a design and it is important to be able to develop a budget quality estimate so a design is allocated the necessary resources to meet stakeholder requirements. Accurate project cost estimates early in the planning and design processes can also serve as a cost-control measure to assist in managing the design process. With an understanding of the most significant engineering decisions that affect project costs, project team members and stakeholders can proactively make cost-effective decisions during the design process rather than after construction begins and it is too late to prevent going over budget. This research examines the potential of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as a tool to support the tasks of cost prediction, mapping costs to engineering decisions, and risk management during the early stages of a design's life-cycle. ANNs are a modeling tool based on the computational paradigm of the human brain and have proved to be a robust and reliable method for prediction, ranking, classification, and interpretation or processing of data.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering and Design Systematic Drilling and Blasting for Surface Excavations

The United States Coast Guard Academy has integrated a successful senior-level ship design course sequence into an undergraduate engineering curriculum in order to achieve specifically desired academic and professional outcomes. The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) curriculum discussed is designed to allow for efficient use of class and lab time. Students at this level are considered to have gained the maturity and self-discipline necessary to complete independent design work. This paper presents an overview of the NAME curriculum given at the Academy with specific emphasis on the senior design project. Descriptions of the "capstone" design courses (Principles of Ship Design and Ship Design and System Integration) are given and details of their organization are included in the appendices. Additionally, the senior design project is described in detail including a brief discussion of its effectiveness in achieving a thoughtfully developed list of desired outcomes. (GLR)

The complainant alleged that Loral Command and Control Systems (Loral), Colorado Springs, Colorado the prime contractor for the REACT hardware, routinely attributed REACT' production problems to REACT console-hardware design and specification deficiencies. The complainant alleged that those production problems did not result from hardware design and specification deficiencies, but, instead, from poor workmanship by the contractor and its subcontractors. As a result of those manufacturing problems, the complainant alleged that the prime contractor attempted to get relief by: requesting that the Defense Contract Management Office (DCMO), Colorado Springs; Colorado, concur with class II engineering change orders (ECOs) to change hardware drawings instead of requesting that the REACT Program Office approve a waiver or deviation of the design specification in exchange for contractor consideration and submitting claims for design deficiencies under the prior effects clause of the production contract. Enclosure 1 provides definitions of technical terms used in this report.
