Research has shown that Asian Canadians tend to underuse conventional mental health services; youths in particular are at heightened risk for mental health issues. Digital health innovations may have a role in improving their access to care, however, limited evidence exists on the extent to which these approaches can address cultural barriers to accessing care for this population. We thus aim to examine how well digital health addresses cultural barriers to mental healthcare accessibility in Asian Canadians, and improves their attitudes towards receiving care.

Mammographic films are monochrome displays with an excellent image quality, It is traditionally understood that the display of digital images in gray scale monochrome mode is the best suited for radiological imaging. Today the most color present in a radiographic film is dye (generally blue) in film base added to reduce eyestrain for the interpreting radiologist. The photopic response of the human eye is maximized for a photon wavelength of about 500 nm and decreases for higher and lower wavelengths. With the rapid development of digital image acquisition and displays systems there has arisen the possibility of creating purely color-scale radiographic images. Especially this is a very desirable for new flat-panel display technologies, such as active-matrix liquid crystal display (AM-LCD) or active-matrix organic light-emitting display. The realization of gray scale monochrome display for these technologies is not easily achievable at a low manufacturing cost. In addition, the signal acquired by a mammography flat panel detector can contain up to 12 bits of image data. It is known that the human eye cannot discern between more than 10 bits of data in a monochrome mode. Therefore, part of the information acquired by the X-ray digital detector is lost. The goal of this project was to investigate the effect of monochrome display color on the detectability of breast abnormalities, and to develop and implement color-coding schemes, available to the user on-demand that will make use of the additional image data information. We think that the color display is capable of increased dynamic range and color radiography may have a lot of potential in practical clinical applications.

Many DoD installations are subject to environmental regulations that require them to monitor opacity using EPA Reference Method 9, which relies on certified human observers. Maintaining EPA human-observer certification is expensive because each observer must attend a certification course twice annually. Furthermore, these opacity measurements are subject to potential inaccuracies and lack of reproducibility. Thus, DoD could benefit from a system that generates accurate and reproducible opacity measurements. Some methods currently exist for determining opacity digitally, and they perform well under sunny, cloudless conditions or with the use of an artificial physical background. This project developed an algorithm to determine opacity for stacks under challenging background conditions, such as trees. The algorithm is based on the principles of light attenuation and uses a stereo approach, in which a user takes two pictures: one of the plume and one of the background behind the plume. This method performed well for black plumes and for white plumes (opacity 85%).

This article analyses different methods of adapting digital content for its delivery via mobile devices taking into account two aspects which are a fundamental part of the learning process; on the one hand, functionality of the contents, and on the other, the actual controlled navigation requirements that the learner needs in order to acquire high level knowledge. Currently the existing development processes consist of adapting content ad-hoc considering the device's special technical features and the programming language which has been used. Designers and programmers pay special attention to the increasing need of implementing and going about the creation process in a systematic way. This obviously leads to a growing need to establish reference marks that will allow us to compare these different methods of creation. The development and adaptation of digital content and navigability and the impact on the user is a point of departure for future research. Its function would be to determine effectively whether this learning process is viable or not.

What is the current evidence on co-designing digital health behaviour change interventions for adolescents, and how does co-design contribute to their relevance, effectiveness, and engagement in promoting behaviour change? How do co-design processes differ between newly developed interventions and adaptations of existing ones?

The objectives of this study is to find out: 1) How satisfied are medical students with the student-centred podcast production developing intra-collaborative competencies? 2) How do medical students experience that the use of PBL pedagogy in combination with student-centered podcast production can develop the acquisition of the competency the Collaborator, as defined by CanMEDS framework in a medical curriculum?

In this report a single longitudinal tracker is developed for the aircraft for three different flight conditions. The method used is the singular perturbation method applied to fast-sampling, output-feedback digital control. Each flight condition has three command modes: positive pitch pointing, vertical translation and straight climb. A sensitivity study is performed to validate the design and illustrate design parameter influences on system response. A computer-aided-design program, MULTI, is developed to assist in the iterative design process. The program is fully interactive, user-oriented, and provides error protection. The program allows complete design and simulation of three types of control law designs: known-regular plants, known irregular plants, and unknown plants. The report contains a brief but complete summary of each of these control law design methods. A user's manual and a programmer's manual are provided for further development of the program. (Author)

The methodology used by the U.S. Geological Survey in studying the effects of the navigation pools on the ground-water-flow regime involved digital modeling of steady-and nonsteady-state conditions. The steady-state model, GWFLOW, computes the head response in an aquifer due to various boundary conditions. The nonsteady-state model, SUPERMOCK, was designed to simulate transient stress and response in an alluvial-flow system. In addition to the simulation models, several computer programs were developed during the study to aid in the preparation of field data for input to the models and in the calibration of the models. For the generation of impulsive sound waves caused by parallel interaction of a vortex and an airfoil in a plane flow field, two different mechanisms are responsible by experimental evidence. The first one originates from the area of the stagnation point of the airfoil: a temporal increase of pressure and density - in consequence of the incoming vortex - relaxes by sound wave emission, when the vortex vanishes behind the airfoils nose. This is called a compressibility wave. The second one is reasoned by a supersonic flow regime, which appears, when the stationary airfoil flow is augmented by the flow field of the vortex: at the shoulder of the airfoil we get an unsteady return to subsonics by a shock wave. This moves upstream after the vortex has passed and is named transonic wave. Evidently both mechanisms only occur, if the flow field at the airfoil is augmented by the vortex, i.e. the vortex has a special spin orientation with respect to the airfoil. Digital terrain modeling (DTM) is concerned with the digital storage, analysis, and display of surface configuration data (x,y,z) for topographic mapping. The field of DTM is relatively new and growing. Many methods of DTM have been studied and applied to real problems, but two are of concern here: the uniform rectangular grid (URG) and the triangulated irregular network (TIN) methods. This technical note presents preliminary evaluation methodology that will be used to compare the TIN and URG methods in the specific context of Marine Corps ground combat operations.

Design methods for digital filters used in discrete time control systems are described. The sampling interval is first used as a design parameter. Then new design methods for digital control algorithms that minimize multiplication requirements are developed. Interactive software for aiding the design and implementation of digital control algorithms is described. (Author)

In many signal processing applications such as in underwater acoustic array beamforming, the need arises to implement digital phase shifters. Conventional methods of implementation make use of digital interpolation and decimation to derive FIR (Finite-duration Impulse Response) realizations. Such filters, however, are capable of providing delays that are only rational fractions of the unit delay. To obtain delays that are arbitrary factors of the unt delay, two novel methods are presented: the first method makes use of a windowing technique and the second method makes use of a frequency-sampling approach. In both methods the constraint of exactly linear phase is relaxed and the departures from linear phase are kept very small. To ensure that the new phase shifters attain a high level of performance, comprehensive error measures have been developed and applied; these performance measures consists of a normalized rms error, the phase delay error and the group delay error. Moreover, these error measures are applicable to any method of designing digital phase shifters. In addition, for the frequency-sampling designs, the concept of an effective filter length is introduced; this concept takes into account the wraparound error that arises in fast-convolution signal processing operations. Aside from the presentation of the design procedures and error measures, examples are included to illustrate the salient features of the two new methods. Variations in design methods for aircraft digital flight control are evaluated and compared. The methods fall into two categories; those where the design is done in the continuous domain (or s plane) and those where the design is done in the discrete domain (or z plane). Design method fidelity is evaluated by examining closed loop root movement and the frequency response of the discretely controlled continuous aircraft. It was found that all methods provided acceptable performance for sample rates greater than 10 cps except the uncompensated s plane design method which was acceptable above 20 cps. A design procedure based on optimal control methods was proposed that provided the best fidelity at very slow sample rates and required no design iterations for changing sample rates.

The goal of the research is to develop a computer-vision module as an aid to radiologists. The specific aims are: (1) Further development of advanced computerized schemes for the detection and classification of masses and microcalcifications in digital mammograms, including quantitative analysis of the radiographic characteristics and the decision-making processes used by radiologists in making a decision with respect to the likelihood of malignancy and choosing the appropriate course of action. (2) Development of a dedicated 'intelligent' modular system with man-machine interfaces and fast computation times appropriate for the effective use of the computer-vision schemes. (3) Evaluation of the efficacy and efficiency of the module using a large clinical database. The significance of this research is that if the detectability of cancers can be increased by employing a computer to aid the radiologist's diagnosis, then the treatment of patients with cancer can be initiated earlier and their chance of survival improved. Systematic introduction of computer-vision tools to radiologists that is presented in this proposal requires minimal modification to the current reading habits of radiologists. When digital mammographic imaging units become commonplace, the computer-vision module cna be interfaced to electronic, filmless medical imaging reading areas.

It includes discussion of the general problems and techniques, reports on the particular experiences of the individual nations, and concludes that, whilst much work remains to be done on software aspects, the field of data transmission may be amenable to early standardization. The annexes to the report contain full details of the techniques studied, and include comparisons of data transmission methods and high level languages. These comparisons are not intended as quantitative assessments but are designed to outline the relevant features of the different techniques.

A historical, temporal photo interpretation method is presented for combining the use of a current digital stereo photogrammetric system with manual photo interpretation techniques. The U.S. Army Topographic Engineering Center was tasked to provide products showing the current three-dimensional position of certain features present on a 1918 photo mosaic. This mosaic is over a former chemical munitions test area in Washington, D.C.. In order to provide this data, aerial photography from 1918, 1927, 1991 and 1993 was used in the process. This paper will discuss the front end research and collection of textual and photographic data, the manual photo interpretation process, the photogrammetric process and its accuracies, the problems encountered, the digital mapping process and the final products. Research efforts covered by the subject contract have been directed toward the stability and synthesis problems for two dimensional digital recursive digital filters. Such filters are advantageous when a premium is placed upon computer storage or computation time. Previously defined results on stability analysis have been refined and a revised paper has been submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for publication. This research effort will continue to address this complex problem. Approximately circularly symmetric lowpass, highpass, bandpass, bandstop, low frequency boost and high frequency boost filters have been designed. Evaluation of these filters with actual images of various types need to be addressed and has been proposed as a follow on to the effort described in this report.

The literature on the re-use of learning materials has largely focused on the development of materials. This paper explores how re-use can be stimulated after learning materials have been developed and made available. We searched for and developed guidelines that support staff and/or management most frequently adopt in cases of (un)successful re-use of existing digital teaching and learning materials and methods by teachers in higher education. In a grounded theory approach, we collected existing guidelines from 11 literature studies, and developed new guidelines from 19 (mainly Dutch) case studies. Through constant comparison, we developed 'low-level' guidelines, which were classified into high-level guidelines. Five high-level guidelines turned out to be robust when subjected to repeated comparison with the case studies. Further, this paper elaborates existing guidelines by showing specific elaborations of them in our case studies. (Contains 2 figures.)

Despite an increasing number of studies on pre-service teachers' digital literacy, there are few studies on pre-service English as a second/foreign language teachers. In the existing studies, there are issues especially regarding sample size, methodology, and analyzing different variables. Hence, this study recruits more participants from different institutions and investigates the effects of five variables, which are gender, grade, daily amount of time spent on digital platforms, the most used device, and year of digital platform use. The participants were 186 pre-service teachers from Türkiye. The quantitative data were collected via the Digital Literacy Scale and analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0 via independent samples t-test and one-way variance analysis. The qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed by Descriptive Analysis. The findings showed that the participants had a medium to high level of digital literacy, while they reported higher levels in the interviews. The analysis of the survey indicated that the most used device and year of digital platform use had a significant effect on the participants' digital literacy levels. The interview results combined with the survey implied that the vital point in digital literacy training is to ensure "learning how to exploit digital skills" rather than gaining knowledge on all the available tools, applications, and resources.

The MILSTOL (MILitary STOL) takeoff and landing digital computer program was developed to compute takeoff and landing characteristics of powered- lift STOL aircraft. It calculates a point mass takeoff and/or landing for a trimmed configuration with either externally blown jet flaps, internally blown jet flaps, or mechanical flaps with vectored thrust. Contained in this report are: Discussion of assumptions and methods used in the trajectory calculations; Definition of common list variables; Definition of the input variables and sample input data for the externally blown jet flap configuration; Sample output for the externally blown flap configuration; and Program listings and flow charts. The program is written in Fortran IV for use on CDC 6000 series digital computers and requires 37 K sub 8 central memory for loading and execution.

Automated modulation classification is a fundamental requirement for electronic support measures. Existing automated classifiers use a variety of different modulation recognition techniques. This paper reviews the category of decision-theoretic approaches and discusses the relationships between decision-theoretic methods and other statistical modulation classification methods.

Some methods for increasing the rate of calculation of elementary functions on digital electronic computers. Algorithms for table-polynomial approximation of elementary functions on digital computers are discussed. At the expense of a certain increase in the number of computer memory cells occupied with sub-routines for calculating elementary functions, these methods permit a significant in crease in the rate of calculation of these functions.

Digital Study Assistants (DSA) aim to support individual learning processes by designing them appropriately and efficiently based on recommendations. In this paper we present a prototype of a DSA for students in higher education of three German universities. The digital data driven DSA is integrated into the local learning management system and consists of recommender modules with a certain kind of recommendation for a specific purpose, e.g., recommending Academic Contacts that fit an expressed academic interest. The modules implemented so far use a wide range of methods: Classic rule-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Neural Networks, that can detect complex features and patterns in large data sets. To evaluate the current prototype of the DSA we used a mixed methods design approach with concurrently collected user data and qualitative data. A first insight in the user data suggests that recommender modules providing personalized recommendations are more likely to be used by students. A focus group discussion with students confirmed these findings with the suggestion to make the DSA more personal, individual, interactive, supportive, and user-friendly. In conclusion we present ideas for the further development of the prototype based on these findings. [For the full proceedings, see ED621108.]

Introduction.  The paper considers the creation and application of digital twins at various stages of the life cycle of mobile transport and transshipment rope complexes (mobile ropeways), the equipment of which is mounted on the basis of wheeled or tracked chassis of high load capacity. The work objective is to improve safety in using such transport systems based on real-time forecasting of potential failures. This will prevent the occurrence of emergencies in a timely manner. Materials and Methods.  The structure of the digital twin of the mobile transport and transshipment rope complex is proposed. Approaches to the analysis of ongoing work processes in order to prevent accidents have been developed. They are based on simulation modeling of the system dynamics using new complex mathematical models built through the system approach. Results.  The developed method was tested on a large-scale layout of a mobile transport and transshipment rope complex created by 3D printing methods. A mathematical model of this system was developed; it was used to construct a digital double of the experimental model. The possibility of predicting failures in the layout is shown experimentally through the example of a rope slipping case. To do this, the actual value of the load suspension point coordinate obtained through the video stream processing method was compared to the predicted value calculated using a digital twin. Discussion and Conclusions.  The research results provide the creation of an industrial digital twin of a mobile transport and transshipment rope complex mounted on cross-country wheeled chassis.
