1Open Source In-Memory Database Systems With Redis Labs Chief Product Officer Alvin Richards
By How I Launched This: A SaaS Story
We're back with How I Launched This: A SaaS story! This week, Stephanie Wong (@stephr_wong) talks with Alvin Richards about Redis Labs, a company optimizing the Redis open source in-memory database system to build better managed tools for enterprise clients.Alvin begins the show describing how his love of solving complex development problems and great people skills have put him in a unique position to act as intermediary between engineers and clients, gaining insights into real-world problems and how to solve them. Looking to the future, Alvin's team also anticipates client needs, creating database products that will continue to help clients as their projects evolve.Later in the show, Alvin describes how the Redis system built in the cloud was reworked to also provide on-prem offerings. We learn how Redis Labs was able to fill a gap in the market by offering a database product that both developers and clients could understand, adapt, and use. Alvin introduces us to other Redis Labs products, including Redis for Enterprise which allows tiering between memory forms, in-memory caching, scaling, and more for a flexible database experience. We wrap up the show with a discussion of what it's like coordinating the development of such a large open source project and why Redis Labs supports open source. Alvin offers advice to other companies, stressing the importance of building solutions with both the creator and client in mind and educating clients and developers to use the software effectively. We talk about the future of open source in SaaS companies and how important it will be for scaling SaaS technology. Alvin concludes by encouraging everyone to ultimately find joy in what they do.Episode Links:RedisRedis LabsDockerMemorystoreMongoDBElasticRedis University

3ERIC ED422921: A Spiral Approach To Teaching Database And Systems Development: Theory Vs. Reality.
By ERIC
The Applied Computer Science Department at Illinois State University is in the process of implementing a reengineered curriculum that utilizes an integrated and spiral approach to subject coverage. The 1996-97 school year was the first year that upper division course prerequisites were based on the new curriculum instead of a mixture of old and new. During this first year, professors taught upper division courses that relied on students having acquired the knowledge and skills from the first portion of the spiral. This paper focuses on the systems analysis and design component of the core, including systems development tools and database concepts, and the way in which the introduction of this material in a first, core course impacted the more advanced treatment of the topics in advanced courses for Information Systems majors. Issues and problems are analyzed, attempted solutions discussed, and suggestions offered for those faced with a similar situation. After teaching the two follow-on courses, it was apparent that more planning and development work needs to be done in order to affect a smoother transition along the spiral. (Author/AEF)

5DNAtraffic--a New Database For Systems Biology Of DNA Dynamics During The Cell Life.
By Kuchta, Krzysztof, Barszcz, Daniela, Grzesiuk, Elzbieta, Pomorski, Pawel and Krwawicz, Joanna
This article is from Nucleic Acids Research , volume 40 . Abstract DNAtraffic (http://dnatraffic.ibb.waw.pl/) is dedicated to be a unique comprehensive and richly annotated database of genome dynamics during the cell life. It contains extensive data on the nomenclature, ontology, structure and function of proteins related to the DNA integrity mechanisms such as chromatin remodeling, histone modifications, DNA repair and damage response from eight organisms: Homo sapiens, Mus musculus, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Escherichia coli and Arabidopsis thaliana. DNAtraffic contains comprehensive information on the diseases related to the assembled human proteins. DNAtraffic is richly annotated in the systemic information on the nomenclature, chemistry and structure of DNA damage and their sources, including environmental agents or commonly used drugs targeting nucleic acids and/or proteins involved in the maintenance of genome stability. One of the DNAtraffic database aim is to create the first platform of the combinatorial complexity of DNA network analysis. Database includes illustrations of pathways, damage, proteins and drugs. Since DNAtraffic is designed to cover a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, it has to be extensively linked to numerous external data sources. Our database represents the result of the manual annotation work aimed at making the DNAtraffic much more useful for a wide range of systems biology applications.

6DTIC ADA160284: A Performance Measurement Methodology For Software Multiple-Backend Database Systems.
By Defense Technical Information Center
Software multiple-backend database systems provide high-performance, cost-effective database management support for systems with very large and growing databases. One backend computer, called the backend controller (or, briefly, controller), controls transaction processing of the remaining backend computers, i.e., backends, and interfaces with the host computers. These systems are designed to provide performance-gain and capacity-growth potential by increasing the number of backends connected to their controllers. This thesis develops a comprehensive methodology for the performance evaluation of multiple-backend database systems. It also applies this methodology to develop a test-database set and test-transaction mix for the evaluation of the multi-backend database system, MBDS. (Author)

16A Dedicated Database System For Handling Multi-level Data In Systems Biology.
By Pornputtapong, Natapol, Wanichthanarak, Kwanjeera, Nilsson, Avlant, Nookaew, Intawat and Nielsen, Jens
This article is from Source Code for Biology and Medicine , volume 9 . Abstract Background: Advances in high-throughput technologies have enabled extensive generation of multi-level omics data. These data are crucial for systems biology research, though they are complex, heterogeneous, highly dynamic, incomplete and distributed among public databases. This leads to difficulties in data accessibility and often results in errors when data are merged and integrated from varied resources. Therefore, integration and management of systems biological data remain very challenging. Methods: To overcome this, we designed and developed a dedicated database system that can serve and solve the vital issues in data management and hereby facilitate data integration, modeling and analysis in systems biology within a sole database. In addition, a yeast data repository was implemented as an integrated database environment which is operated by the database system. Two applications were implemented to demonstrate extensibility and utilization of the system. Both illustrate how the user can access the database via the web query function and implemented scripts. These scripts are specific for two sample cases: 1) Detecting the pheromone pathway in protein interaction networks; and 2) Finding metabolic reactions regulated by Snf1 kinase. Results and conclusion: In this study we present the design of database system which offers an extensible environment to efficiently capture the majority of biological entities and relations encountered in systems biology. Critical functions and control processes were designed and implemented to ensure consistent, efficient, secure and reliable transactions. The two sample cases on the yeast integrated data clearly demonstrate the value of a sole database environment for systems biology research.

19Microsoft Research Video 104670: Rethinking Database Systems For Modern Architectures
By Microsoft Research
Computer systems have enjoyed an exponential growth in processor speed for the last 20 years, while DRAM main memory speed improves only moderately. Today a cache miss to main memory takes hundreds of processor cycles, and this gap between processor and DRAM speeds is widening exponentially. Recent database performance studies have pointed out that about 50% or more of the execution time of database systems in main memory is often wasted due to cache misses. On the other hand, several decades of database studies have invented many I/O techniques to better tolerate the disk-to-memory gap. Increasingly larger main memories in server systems can hold more and more hot data in databases. Therefore, the memory-to-cache gap is becoming the major performance problem for database systems. In this talk, I rethink database system designs to exploit modern computer architecture features. In particular, I exploit the CPU cache hierarchy and software prefetch instructions supported by most modern processors for relational database systems. Cache prefetching can load data into the cache before use, thus reducing the impact of cache misses. I focus on important structures and algorithms with intriguing, non-contiguous memory access patterns: the B+-Tree index, and the hash join algorithm. I will present novel prefetching techniques for B+-trees and hash joins. I will report on the results of extensive performance studies, demonstrating the dramatic performance improvements of the prefetching techniques over traditional algorithms and other cache friendly schemes. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. 20MOCCA-SURVEY Database I. Accreting White Dwarf Binary Systems In Globular Clusters -- III. Cataclysmic Variables -- Implications Of Model Assumptions
By Diogo Belloni, Mónica Zorotovic, Matthias R. Schreiber, Nathan W. C. Leigh, Mirek Giersz and Abbas Askar
In this third of a series of papers related to cataclysmic variables (CVs) and related objects, we analyse the population of CVs in a set of 12 globular cluster models evolved with the MOCCA Monte Carlo code, for two initial binary populations (IBPs), two choices of common-envelope phase (CEP) parameters, and three different models for the evolution of CVs and the treatment of angular momentum loss. When more realistic models and parameters are considered, we find that present-day cluster CV duty cycles are extremely-low ($\lesssim 0.1$ per cent) which makes their detection during outbursts rather difficult. Additionally, the IBP plays a significant role in shaping the CV population properties, and models that follow the Kroupa IBP are less affected by enhanced angular momentum loss. We also predict from our simulations that CVs formed dynamically in the past few Gyr (massive CVs) correspond to bright CVs (as expected), and that faint CVs formed several Gyr ago (dynamically or not) represent the overwhelming majority. Regarding the CV formation rate, we rule out the notion that it is similar irrespective of the cluster properties. Finally, we discuss the differences in the present-day CV properties related to the IBPs, the initial cluster conditions, the CEP parameters, formation channels, the CV evolution models, and the angular momentum loss treatments.

38TCMSP: A Database Of Systems Pharmacology For Drug Discovery From Herbal Medicines.
By Ru, Jinlong, Li, Peng, Wang, Jinan, Zhou, Wei, Li, Bohui, Huang, Chao, Li, Pidong, Guo, Zihu, Tao, Weiyang, Yang, Yinfeng, Xu, Xue, Li, Yan, Wang, Yonghua and Yang, Ling
This article is from Journal of Cheminformatics , volume 6 . Abstract Background: Modern medicine often clashes with traditional medicine such as Chinese herbal medicine because of the little understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action of the herbs. In an effort to promote integration of both sides and to accelerate the drug discovery from herbal medicines, an efficient systems pharmacology platform that represents ideal information convergence of pharmacochemistry, ADME properties, drug-likeness, drug targets, associated diseases and interaction networks, are urgently needed. Description: The traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP) was built based on the framework of systems pharmacology for herbal medicines. It consists of all the 499 Chinese herbs registered in the Chinese pharmacopoeia with 29,384 ingredients, 3,311 targets and 837 associated diseases. Twelve important ADME-related properties like human oral bioavailability, half-life, drug-likeness, Caco-2 permeability, blood-brain barrier and Lipinski’s rule of five are provided for drug screening and evaluation. TCMSP also provides drug targets and diseases of each active compound, which can automatically establish the compound-target and target-disease networks that let users view and analyze the drug action mechanisms. It is designed to fuel the development of herbal medicines and to promote integration of modern medicine and traditional medicine for drug discovery and development. Conclusions: The particular strengths of TCMSP are the composition of the large number of herbal entries, and the ability to identify drug-target networks and drug-disease networks, which will help revealing the mechanisms of action of Chinese herbs, uncovering the nature of TCM theory and developing new herb-oriented drugs. TCMSP is freely available at http://sm.nwsuaf.edu.cn/lsp/tcmsp.php.

45ERIC ED606197: The Adequacy And Fairness Of State School Finance Systems: Key Findings From The School Finance Indicators Database, School Year 2016-2017. Second Edition
By ERIC
When it comes to American education, few policy areas are as misunderstood -- or as crucial -- as school finance. Over the past several years, a political and empirical consensus has emerged about the importance of equitable and adequate school funding for high quality K-12 education. In other words, the evidence is clear that money does, indeed, matter. Certainly, debates about how education funds should be spent are also important, and money should be spent wisely. But there are few options for improving America's schools that do not require adequate and sustained investment, particularly for disadvantaged students. While maintaining efficiency is important, the fact is that districts cannot spend money wisely that they do not have. This report presents key findings from the second release of the School Finance Indicators Database (SFID), a public database of sophisticated but user-friendly state school finance measures going back to 1993. This latest version of the SFID includes data up to 2017 (the 2016-17 school year). [For the first edition, "The Adequacy and Fairness of State School Finance Systems. Findings from the School Finance Indicators Database, School Year 2015-2016," see ED596199.]

47DTIC ADA401631: Role-Based Access Control For Loosely Coupled Distributed Database Management Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
Much of the work to date to apply Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to database management systems has focused on single database systems or an integrated distributed database system. For situations where the need exists to consolidate multiple independent databases, and where the direct integration of the databases is neither practical nor desirable, the application of RBAC requires that policy be enforced via a method that is distinct from the databases. The method must provide for the verification of the RBAC policy, while allowing for the independence of the various databases on which the policy is enforced. This paper proposes a model for an application that provides for a web-based interface for users to be granted access to data held in various independent databases. The application enforces a strict RBAC policy on a well-defined set of accesses, while alleviating the need for users to have a separate account on each of the databases.

48DTIC ADA465154: An Agent-Based Approach To Inference Prevention Distributed Database Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
We propose an inference prevention agent as a tool that enables each of the databases in a distributed system to keep track of probabilistic dependencies with other databases and then use that information to help preserve the confidentiality of sensitive data. This is accomplished with minimal sacrifice of the performance and survivability gains that are associated with distributed database systems.

49DTIC ADA200894: Extensible Database Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
Until recently, research and development efforts in the database management systems area were focused on supporting traditional business applications. The design of database systems capable of supporting non-traditional application areas, including engineering applications for CAD/CAM and VLSI data, scientific and statistical applications, expert database systems (which can really be viewed as adding database system technology to an AI application), and image/voice applications, has now emerged as an important new direction for database system research. The new applications differ from more conventional applications like transaction processing and record keeping in a number of important areas: 1) Data modeling requirements; 2) Processing functionally; 3) Concurrency control and recovery mechanisms; 4) Access methods and storage structures. Keywords: EXODUS computer architecture.
