We study a flat 3-brane in presence of a linear $k$ field with nonzero cosmological constant $\Lambda_{4}$. In this model the crossing of the phantom divide (PD) occurs when the $k$-essence energy density becomes negative. We show that in the high energy regime the effective equation of state has a resemblance of a modified Chaplygin gas while in the low energy regime it becomes linear. We find a scale factor that begins from a singularity and evolves to a de Sitter stable stage while other solutions have a super-accelerated regime and end with a big rip. We use the energy conditions to show when the effective equation of state of the brane-universe crosses the PD.

A class of braneworld models can lead to phantom-like acceleration of the late universe, but without the need for any phantom matter. In the simplest models, the universe contains only cold dark matter and a cosmological constant. We generalize these models by introducing a quintessence field. The new feature in our models is that quintessence leads to a crossing of the phantom divide, $w=-1$. This is a purely gravitational effect, and there is no phantom instability. Furthermore, the Hubble parameter is always decreasing, and there is no big rip singularity in the future.

Through Job For the Future's (JFF's) work with communities around the country on the Back on Track model, postsecondary bridging strategies have emerged as a particularly critical and especially replicable component of programming for vulnerable youth. This issue brief offers a typology of evidence-informed bridge programming, drawing on frontrunner programs that have designed their strategies specifically for this population and that have attained early indicators of success. Hopefully, this typology will inform the design and support the scale of bridging programs that provide a critical leg up for vulnerable segments of the opportunity youth population to earn the postsecondary credentials that are so essential to thriving in today's economy. The scale invariance is spontaneously broken due to the intrinsic features of the TMT dynamics. Hence TMT represents an explicit example of the effective k-essence resulting from first principles without any exotic term in the underlying action intended for obtaining this result. Depending of the choice of regions in the parameter space (but without fine tuning), TMT exhibits interesting outputs for cosmological dynamics, for example: a) Absence of initial singularity of the curvature while its time derivative is singular. This is a sort of "sudden" singularities studied by Barrow on purely kinematic grounds. b) Power law inflation in the subsequent stage of evolution which ends with a graceful exit into the state with zero cosmological constant (CC). c) Possibility of resolution of the old CC problem. From the point of view of TMT, it becomes clear why the old CC problem cannot be solved (without fine tuning) in conventional field theories; d) There is a wide range of the parameters such that in the late time universe: the equation-of-state w=p/\rho

The behavior of cosmological trajectories in the vicinity of the cusp is studied in some detail and a simple mechanical analogy is presented. The phenomenon of certain complementarity between the smoothness of the spacetime geometry and matter equations of motion is elucidated. We introduce a network of cosmological histories and qualitatively describe some of its properties.

It does not, and it shouldn't! David H. Moffat was president of a large Denver bank and promoter of a direct Denver to Salt Lake line, which would later become the famous Moffat Line. The route this line took was known as The Moffat Road, and went directly over the Continental Divide at some of the most spectacular scenery in Colorado, much of which was so remote it had never before been seen by the public.

We study possible crossing of the phantom divide line in a DGP-inspired $F(R,\phi)$ braneworld scenario where scalar field and curvature quintessence are treated in a unified framework. With some specific form of $F(R,\phi)$ and by adopting a suitable ansatz, we show that there are appropriate regions of the parameters space which account for late-time acceleration and admit crossing of the phantom divide line.

The $f(R)$ gravity models formulated in Einstein conformal frame are equivalent to Einstein gravity together with a minimally coupled scalar field. We shall explore phantom behavior of $f(R)$ models in this frame and compare the results with those of the usual notion of phantom scalar field.

Without adequate data on Asian Americans, understanding the issues and measuring trends are very difficult. Although small, the number of Asian American children touched by the child welfare system is not negligible. Asian immigrant families have many different cultural customs and norms, and they are often reluctant to seek services and unsure which of their traditional child rearing practices may be considered grounds for investigation in the United States. Rapid removal of children from families has the greatest potential to harm immigrant families, and cultural miscommunications can easily lead to rapid removal. Adequate interpretation should be a right for every non-English speaking immigrant. Placing Asian American children in kinship foster care homes should be the highest priority for the Administration for Children's Services (ACS). ACS rules and laws regarding immigrants' rights in child welfare are unclear. Recommendations include improve data collecting and reporting, address language barriers, educate the immigrant community, increase preventive services, and reform the family court. Three appendices define Asian Americans and cultural competency and present recent ACS reforms. (SM)

This book describes how Canadian, and then particularly Manitoba, Mennonite Brethren went through a painful process of exchanging German for English as their primary language of religious discourse and nurture. This language transition was complicated by the nature of Mennonite identity, grounded as it is in religion as well as ethnicity. The profound interconnection of religion, language, and identity invested the course of language transition with deeply felt passion and anxiety. In the end, the tension was resolved in an altered identity with the boundary markers of language and ethnicity becoming increasingly subordinate to more purely religious considerations of Mennonite Brethren identity. ~from the Introduction

Dark energy cosmologies with an equation of state parameter $w$ less than -1 are often found to violate the null energy condition and show unstable behaviour. A solution to this problem may require the existence of a consistent effective theory that violates the null energy condition only momentarily and does not develop any instabilities or other pathological features for a late time cosmology. A model which incorporates a dynamical scalar field $\phi$ coupled to the quadratic Riemann invariant of the Gauss-Bonnet form is a viable proposal. Such an effective theory is shown to admit nonsingular cosmological evolutions for a wide range of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We discuss the conditions for which our model yields observationally supported spectra of scalar and tensor fluctuations, under cosmological perturbations. The model can provide a reasonable explanation for the transition from matter dominance to dark energy regime and the late time cosmic acceleration, offering an interesting testing ground for investigations of the cosmological modified gravity.

The Digital Divide is the gap between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not. LiFi is a wireless data transmission technology using the visible light spectrum. It has the potential to deliver affordable, energy-neutral, secure internet access to remote and rural regions of the Global South.

Dark energy models with a single scalar field cannot cross the equation of state divide set by a cosmological constant. More general models that allow crossing require additional degrees of freedom to ensure gravitational stability. We show that a parameterized post-Friedmann description of cosmic acceleration provides a simple but accurate description of multiple scalar field crossing models. Moreover the prescription provides a well controlled approximation for a wide range of "smooth" dark energy models. It conserves energy and momentum and is exact in the metric evolution on scales well above and below the transition scale to relative smoothness. Standard linear perturbation tools have been altered to include this description and made publicly available for studies of the dark energy involving cosmological structure out to the horizon scale.

We consider the Randall-Sundrum brane-world model with bulk-brane energy transfer where the Einstein-Hilbert action is modified by curvature correction terms: a four-dimensional scalar curvature from induced gravity on the brane, and a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet curvature term. It is remarkable that these curvature terms will not change the dynamics of the brane universe at low energy. Parameterizing the energy transfer and taking the dark radiation term into account, we find that the phantom divide of the equation of state of effective dark energy could be crossed, without the need of any new dark energy components. Fitting the two most reliable and robust SNIa datasets, the 182 Gold dataset and the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS), our model indeed has a small tendency of phantom divide crossing for the Gold dataset, but not for the SNLS dataset. Furthermore, combining the recent detection of the SDSS baryon acoustic oscillations peak (BAO) with lower matter density parameter prior, we find that the SNLS dataset also mildly favors phantom divide crossing.

Unified generalized Chaplygin gas models assuming an interaction between dark energy and dark matter fluids have been previously proposed. Following these ideas, we consider a particular relation between dark densities, which allows the possibility of a time varying equation of state for dark energy that crosses the phantom divide at a recent epoch. Moreover, these densities decay during all the evolution of the Universe, avoiding a Big Rip. We find also a scaling solution, i.e. these densities are asymptotically proportional in the future, which contributes to the solution of the coincidence problem.

Fifteen years into a successful career in tech, I came out. I had a choice to make: whether to walk away, or try and salvage my professional network. I say I "came out" in 2017 though this process never really ends, and in this talk I'm going to come out to all of you again. And while my jobless period eventually came to a close, it lasted far longer than I expected. I'd like to share with you what I learned. Was my network shrinking as colleagues chose to distance themselves from me, or because I felt nervous to reach out and have another awkward conversation? Was my bias changing because bad experiences taught me to anticipate more of them, or because my hormones were changing? Was my worldview changing, or just other people's perception of me? I asked myself these questions daily for almost two years. Through meditation, I understood that perception bias can be directly perceived, and I learned some tools to recognize the impact that my bias has on my decisions. We can not become unbiased. What matters is what we do about it.

We evaluate and discuss the behavior of the thermodynamical parameters associated to this solution, like the temperature, rate of entropy, entropy, relaxation time, effective pressure and effective EoS. A discussion about the assumption of near equilibrium of the formalism and the accelerated expansion of the solution is presented. The solution allows to cross the phantom divide without evoking an exotic matter fluid and the effective EoS parameter is always lesser than $-1$ and time independent. A future singularity (big rip) occurs, but different from the Type I (big rip) solution classified in S. Nojiri, S. D. Odintsov and S. Tsujikawa, Phys. Rev. D 71, 063004 (2005), if we consider others thermodynamics parameters like, for example, the effective pressure in the presence of viscosity or the relaxation time.

The role of new technology in healthcare continues to expand from both the clinical and financial perspectives. Despite the importance of innovation, most academic medical centers do not have a clearly defined process for technology assessment. Recognizing the importance of new drugs, diagnostics and procedures in the care of patients and in the financial well being of the institution, the Massachusetts General Hospital established the Innovative Diagnostics and Therapeutics Committee to provide consultation to senior leadership. The Committee is composed of senior management, along with selected members of the medical staff and others, and provides consultation on the appropriateness of new technology adoption. A case is presented that highlights the issues related to asymmetry of information and the Committee's role in placing an institutional perspective on adoption. Committee methodology is briefly described along with important lessons learned. (Contains 1 table.)
