1Futuristic Consumerism With Sci-Fi Author Scott Overton On Book Lights

By

With a long career as a radio morning show host, Scott Overton's first novel, the mystery/thriller Dead Air was set in the radio world (and shortlisted for a Northern Lit Award in Ontario, Canada). Since then he has taken the reader to even stranger places, including the human bloodstream in his SF novel debut The Primus Labyrinth, a science fiction thriller that reviews compare to Michael Crichton and Dan Brown. Scott's short fiction has been published in many science fiction magazines and anthologies. Fifteen of his SF/fantasy short stories have been gathered in the collection BEYOND: Stories Beyond Time, Technology, and the Stars. Many more SF novels are on the way. A professional member of the Canadian Authors Association and SF Canada, Scott's distractions from writing include scuba diving, music, and collector cars. He lives with his wife on a private island in Northern Ontario.Contact Scott through the Contact page, look for him on Facebook, follow him on Twitter @SFtruenorth, check out his Goodreads page or his Amazon author page for more reading. And for more about our host Lisa Kessler visit http://Lisa-Kessler.comBook Lights - shining a light on good books!

6ERIC ED268234: Personal Consumerism. Courseware Evaluation For Vocational And Technical Education.

By

This courseware evaluation rates the "Personal Consumerism" program developed by Aquarius People Materials. (The eight-program series--not contained in this document--includes understanding labels, consumer help, consumer fraud, consumer law, comparative shopping, consumerism and you, reading an advertisement, and tips on buying a used car.) Part A describes the program in terms of subject area (consumer education), and hardware requirements (Apple II, IBM PC, JR, TRS 80 III); indicates its suitability for use with handicapped and disadvantaged students, grades 7-adult, with a reading level of grades 3-5; lists accompanying materials (teacher's guide); and estimates time for use (one hour). Availability information includes cost ($29.95 each), policies, and contact address. Part B contains the evaluation criteria in eight categories; reviewer ratings appear as yes, somewhat, no, and not applicable, with explanatory comments. Part C summarizes the evaluation. Strengths of this program are ease of reading, good remediation, and positive reinforcement. Weaknesses include inconsistency in presentation, some unclear directions, and no student evaluation. Summary ratings in the eight categories include the following: subject matter, technical presentation, student interaction, and program interaction--yes; student evaluation and documentation--somewhat; work behaviors and application programs--not applicable. The courseware is recommended for use in a life skills curriculum. (SK)

9ERIC ED118205: Consumerism Comes To The Community College. Topical Paper No. 55.

By

As interest on the part of federal and state agencies increases, and legislation is enacted to prevent consumer abuse in higher education, institutions must recognize that students, as well as taxpapers, are consumers of higher education, and that the educational marketplace must concern itself with fair practices, much as business and industry have done in the past several years. The first section of this paper is a philosophical overview of the effect of consumerism in the community college. Some reasons for the development of consumer problems in community colleges are outlined, and a rationale for committing institutional resources to deal with them is given. The second and third sections deal with constructive suggestions of student affairs specialists at two community colleges (one rural and one urban institution) for facing the problems that consumerism presents to post-secondary education. Focuses include: the need for quick action; the need to gather accurate, relevant, and useful data concerning job descriptions and future job opportunities; the need to present both positive and negative information about the college facilities and atmosphere; and the need to explore various means of dispersing such information to interested members of the community. (Author/NHM)

23Resisting Consumerism, Reclaiming Power - Aja Barber

By

The journey to consuming less and reclaiming our collective power is an imperfect, emotional, and challenging one. Consuming stuff is embedded into our identities and our culture. We are told that we deserve to buy things, and that ownership defines our worth. For the sake of our planet's health and our own freedom, it is well worth the hard work of dismantling our addiction to stuff and asking ourselves questions about who we want to be. Aja Barber joins Reseed for a fascinating and frank conversation that delves into intersections between fashion, justice, and climate, wildest dreams for remaking the fashion ecosystem, and how to balance individual and collective action. She digs into her book Consumed - The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism. Aja is a highly respected writer, stylist and consultant whose work deals with the intersections of sustainability and the fashion landscape. She writes for outlets like The Guardian and CNN, and for her thriving online community. Her work builds heavily on ideas behind privilege, wealth inequality, racism, feminism, colonialism and how to fix the fashion industry with all these things in mind.Consuming less is not easy, and sometimes our stuff threatens to consume us. Our rites of passage, rituals, celebrations, hard times, boredom, and life changes are marked often by the accumulation of more things. Consumption is deeply intertwined with colonialism, is built on unjust labour conditions that keep people in poverty, and fuels climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution. Even when we know that, in the context of consumption being so wedded to our identities and society, buying less can be really frustrating, emotional, and - ultimately - it can be liberating.

By

Science education in the 21st century including biology learning at the level of Junior High School requires a more contextual implementation. Environmental learning topics such as green consumerism is a contextual topic in biology learning. Students must have high Pro-Environmental Behavior (PEB) to participate in protecting the environment. The purpose of this study was to measure the PEB of students at the 7th-grade level. The research method used descriptive with survey data collection techniques. The study was conducted in November-December 2018 at State Junior High School 1 South Tambun, West Java, Indonesia. A total sample of 135 students in 7th grade was selected by simple random sampling. The results showed there were six PEB indicators based on Green Consumerism that were Energy Conservation (86.37), Transportation (56.67), Waste Avoidance (53.04), Daily Consumption (64.44), Recycling (58.89), Social Behavior (60.54). Among the six indicators, only energy conservation was categorized as very high, while the others are categorized as moderate. This study concluded that PEB students must be improved by various models, methods, and media in biology learning.

28Industrial Revolution And Consumerism

lonegunman files -    Industrial revolution and Consumerism Consumerism, born out of the industrial revolution, initially focused on driving production and consumption to fuel economic growth. The shift from agrarian societies to urban centers created a mass of people reliant on wages for survival, enticing them into a cycle of buying and debt. Initially, this was about acquiring necessities, but as incomes rose, so did the desire for luxuries and status symbols. The marketing industry, born in the early 20th century, played a significant role in this transition. It began to convince people that happiness and success could be purchased, fostering a culture of instant gratification and planned obsolescence. Companies started designing products to break or become outmoded quickly, ensuring repeat purchases. This 'planned obsolescence' was epitomized by the phrase "built-in obsolescence" coined by Bernard London in 1932. Around the same time, the rise of credit and installment plans, jewish bankster system, made purchasing these goods easier, further entrenching consumerism. The post-WWII boom fueled this growth, with suburbanization / suburbs and the baby boom driving demand for new products and services. By the late 20th century, consumerism had evolved into a 'throwaway society.' Cheap, disposable goods became the norm, and the environmental impact of this culture of waste began to manifest. Today, we face mountains of waste, resource depletion, and a climate crisis, all direct consequences of the expansion of consumerism into a throwaway society, in 2025 to include mankind. "Built-in obsolescence" was a term coined by Bernard London, a jew, in 1932 to describe a strategy employed by manufacturers to intentionally limit the lifespan of their products, thereby encouraging consumers to replace them more frequently. London, an engineer and businessman, proposed this concept as a solution to the economic downturn of the Great Depression, suggesting that if products were made to wear out quickly, it would stimulate demand and boost production. This would, in turn, create jobs and revitalize the economy. The core idea behind built-in obsolescence is that producers incorporate a predetermined lifespan into their products, after which they either fail or become outmoded, compelling consumers to buy replacements. This practice has since become a common strategy in many industries, contributing significantly to the modern 'throwaway society' and its environmental impacts.

32Conjoint Analysis Of Interpersonal Affective Polarization: A Pilot Study Of Partisan Bias In Dating, Housing, And Consumerism

By

Affective polarization, the dislike of individuals from the opposing political party, is growing in an increasingly divided America. Scholars examining partisan animus in interpersonal settings, such as roommate selection (Shafranek 2019), dating (Iyengar et al. 2012), and academic hiring (Inbar and Lammers 2012). This literature reliably finds bias and discrimination against out-party members. However, no study to date examines the limits of affective polarization across multiple categories of social interaction. Our study fills this gap by using conjoint analysis to measure affective polarization across multiple types of social interaction and various characteristics salient to social interaction while cross-pressuring respondents between partisanship and utility maximizing behavior to determine the limits of affective polarization. We test individuals' willingness to socialize with out-partisans across various interpersonal contexts (i.e., dating, neighborhood choice, and choosing a grocery). Then, we assess the limit of partisan attachment by examining the effects of cross pressuring respondents’ choice of grocery stores.

34Group Identity, Guilt, And Political Consumerism

By

Note this registration has been withdrawn: Few studies investigate the relationship between group identity, guilt, and their interaction in political consumerism context. In the Hong Kong context, a strong sense of guilt and solidarity with the ingroup can be found (Cheng and Yuen, 2020). Research has suggested that guilt and anticipated guilt motivate participation in consumer boycotts (Lindenmeier et al., 2017). However, among these studies, all of them investigated the consumer guilt experienced or anticipated by the respondents when they spend money on products from shops that they should boycott. Few studies investigate guilt as an antecedent of boycotts. In Hong Kong, instead of consumer guilt, a strong feeling of survivor guilt has been developed and shared among the protesters after the large-scale protest. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between guilt and group identity among the protesters, and how it predicts political consumerism in Hong Kong.

40The Truth About Japan - Part 10.6 - The End Of Japan - Japanese Incels, Work & Education, Consumerism, VTubers, Weeaboo Simps - Staged Chessboard

By

The Truth About Japan - Part 10.6 - The End of Japan - Japanese Incels, Work and Education, Consumerism, VTubers, Weeaboo Simps - Staged Chessboard Going over the dystopia for men that is modern Japan. Japanese men are worked to the bone in school and work, and most of them cannot even get a decent girlfriend. This and Japanese consumerism and their perverted culture pushes men into retreating from the outside world. Drowning themselves in anime, manga, video games, various types of porn and other forms of consumerism. This warps and damages the collective psyche of Japanese men and is a part of why Japan is doomed. None of that stops weeaboo simps and yellow fever degenerates from praising Japan. They ignore how the very jap media they love is part of why the culture they worship is dying. One of the plagues from Japan is Vtubers, who are another form of modern prostitution and is contributing to the brain rot of younger people today. The Vtubers often pander to pedophiles and other sub-humans. Predictably, the "far right" has embraced these pro-pedo e-whores (that are owned and regulated by companies). We have gone from men like Rockwell and Pierce to Pippa and Kirsche. The "right" is dead. More of my work can be found here: https://bio.link/stagedchessboard

42How Consumerism Killed The American Dream

By

What really killed the American Dream? This is a question often asked by conservatives who long for the idyllic lifestyle of old America in which everyone who did their part could afford a house, support a nuclear family on a single income, and ensure a prosperous future for their children. That lifestyle of the well cared for middle-class American has seemingly vanished, as has the idyllic suburbia of old America. What is the explanation for this outcome? The most basic answer: The death of the American community. Our sense of unity and codependence atomized by the hands of consumerism, materialism, and poor monetary policy which fosters a culture of selfishness, and selfishness comes at the expense of the country as a whole. #AmericanDream #Economics #politics Video Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:21 What was the American Dream? 1:00 Consumerism's Impact on America 2:16 The Fallout of Failing Consumerism Visit our website: https://amvirtue.org/ Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/americanvirtueorg Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/amvirtueorg American Virtue is a Project for Conservatism and Americanism. 48Gender At The Checkout: Gendered Political Consumerism

By

This project examines how and when political consumerism (boycotts and buycotts initiated for political purposes) becomes gendered by theorizing gender identity as dynamically activated rather than statically held. Using a nationally representative survey experiment in the U.S., it tests whether framing corporate actions through peer-based diffusion or top-down moralized appeals activates gender identity and alters consumer choices. The study focuses on abortion-related corporate donations in the U.S. and measures outcomes such as purchase intention and identity salience. By theorizing gender as a conditional identity activated by social cues, the project reframes political consumerism as a dynamic site of political expression rather than a fixed gendered behavior.
