I test the cognitive dissonance explanation and the information utility explanations of selective exposure to political information.

System justification theory (SJT; Jost, Banaji & Nosek, 1994) proposes that members of disadvantaged groups will be more likely to experience cognitive dissonance due to conflicting group interests and system motive, especially when their group identities are weakly salient. However, Owuamalam et al. (in press) have questioned this proposition and have suggested that the cognitive dissonance arising from a conflict between group and system motives should be most apparent when people’s disadvantaged group identities are strongly salient. Given this tension, the present study aimed to examine this cognitive dissonance assumption underlying SJT for the first time, via a pupil dilation paradigm.

The study aims to investigate whether the approach-related emotion of anger can lower physiological markers of cognitive discrepancy. The research question that this human research seeks to address is: Do participants who are induced with anger (as compared with anxiety or no induced emotion) show decreased levels of the physiological markers of cognitive discrepancy?

This study examined the impact of mid-semester student ratings feedback on a faculty's end-of-semester student ratings. The positive direction of the end-of-semester ratings in the two mid-semester feedback groups lent support to the premise that cognitive dissonance theory and various forms of mid-semester, student rating feedback can be used to improve teaching. Of the 158 faculty members invited to participate, 61 volunteered. In the control group, faculty members were rated by students at the end of the semester. In the first treatment group (feedback group), members rated themselves at mid-semester and also received student ratings at mid-semester. The other treatment group (consultation group), faculty members rated themselves and were rated by students as above, but they also received a group consultation (workshop) with their feedback. The means (except for involving students) were greater for the workshop group than for the feedback group, and the means for the feedback group were greater than for the control group. Using Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance as a model, this study attempted to change the attitude and behavior of children toward well liked toys. The results offer only limited support for the theory. The subjects in the three groups did play a significantly different amount of time in the two play periods. The t-tests indicated it was the children who received the mild threat who were playing differentially. They played less in the Post play period and most in the Final play period. This study does not support Freedman's (1965) findings of the effects being maintained across time. These results indicate that the effects of not playing initially are at least partially compensated for later. The results of this study though tending to support the theory of cognitive dissonance for short-term behavior change raise doubts about generalizing the positive results of published studies to populations that have not been investigated. It further indicates that more careful empirical study should be given the nature of threats and toys selected, for use in studies of this kind. Finally, this study warrants the conclusion that studies of dimensions as complex as attempted attitude and behavior change in young children require the utmost precision and preliminary research to rule out other factors which may effect results in an unascertained manner. They meet the trapper (Natty Bumppo), who has left his home in New York state to find a place where he cannot hear the sound of people cutting down the forests. In the years between his other adventures and this novel, he tells us only that he has walked all the way to the Pacific Ocean and seen all the land between the coasts (a heroic feat, considering Lewis and Clark hadn’t yet completed the same trek).
