Two common perspectives regarding lower-class behavior are examined. The authors find little empirical support either for the "culture of poverty" position, with its singular emphasis on retained and transmitted cultural modes, or for the "blocked opportunity" or "situational" hypothesis. Recent evidence is adduced which shows a 3rd perspective, adaptive drift, to be the most adequate conceptualization. In this perspective, the poor are able to drift between lower-class and mainstream cultural ways because they are marginal to society, and are treated as less than full members of it. The policy implications of all 3 positions are extrapolated. The adaptive drift model is viewed as most clearly related to policies aimed at reducing inequalities by guaranteeing basic rights to the market, to governmental services, and to the control of institutions. Americans are struggling through the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression. In recent years, a significant body of research and analysis has documented the breakdown of the middle class and the impact of the current financial crisis on family income, housing, and jobs. But few reports have examined these impacts through the lens of how they affect America's children--a critical gauge of individuals' commitment to their future and the future of the nation. These concerns are the impetus for this first-ever report to address these questions: What impact are the growing income gap and the declining fortunes of the middle class and lower-income class having for the well-being of children? How can these findings help set priorities for policies in the near-term as the nation struggles to recover from the recession--and build resilience for the future? This report is based on an analysis that traces over 24 years the relationship between family income levels and positive and negative outcomes for children across key indicators of their health, education, and social relationships. New results spanning the past quarter century (1985-2008) tell what the future may hold for America's children, depending on whether past trends continue or public policies intervene. These results are based on analyses of trends in ten key indicators and four domains of child well-being included in the Foundation for Child Development (FCD) annual Child Well-Being Index (CWI), the most comprehensive measure of how well America's children are faring (Land, Lamb, and Mustillo, 2001; Land, 2010). Critical to national security are well-educated and healthy children. The findings in this report suggest that, if policymakers do not increase and use more wisely public investments in children and present trends are allowed to continue, children today will inherit a nation that is more unequal, more stratified, and less economically competitive than the nation which their parents and grandparents have experienced. This report presents findings pertaining to four specific domains: family economic well-being, community engagement, health, and social relationships. Results for these four domains are combined to form an overall index of child well-being. Viewing child well-being through the lens of children in middle-class and low-income families, compared to children in the highest income group, this report draws on results presented in a more detailed discussion of trends interpreted in the context of the full complement of 28 CWI indicators (Hernandez and Marotz, under review). For decades America's colleges and universities have been working to increase racial diversity. But they have been using the wrong approach, as Richard Kahlenberg persuasively shows in his highly personal and deeply researched book. Kahlenberg makes the definitive case that class disadvantage, rather than race, should be the determining factor for how a broader array of people "get in." While elite universities claim to be on the side of social justice, the dirty secret of higher education is that the perennial focus on racial diversity has provided cover for an admissions system that mostly benefits the wealthy and shuts out talented working-class students. By fixing the class bias in college admissions we can begin to rectify America's skyrocketing economic inequality and class antagonism, giving more people a better place at the table as they move through life and more opportunity to "swim in the river of power." Kahlenberg has long worked with prominent civil rights leaders on housing and school integration. But his recognition of class inequality in American higher education led to his making a controversial decision to go over to the "other side" and provide research and testimony in cases that helped lead to the controversial Supreme Court decision of 2023 that ended racial preferences. That conservative ruling could, Kahlenberg shows, paradoxically have a progressive policy outcome by cutting a new path for economic and racial diversity alike - and greater fairness.  Richard D. Kahlenberg  is director of the American Identity Project at the Progressive Policy Institute and teaches at George Washington University. His work has been published in the  New York Times , the  Washington Post , the  Wall Street Journal , the  New Republic , and the  Atlantic . He is the author or editor of 18 other books, most recently  Excluded: How Snob Zoning, NIMBYism, and Class Bias Build the Walls We Don't See.  He lives in Rockville, Maryland.  Kahlenberg will be in conversation with  John C. Brittain . Brittain joined the faculty of the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, in 2009, as a tenured professor of law, and served as Acting Dean from 2018 to 2019. Prior to joining UDC Law, he served as Dean of the Thurgood Marshall School of law at Texas Southern University in Houston, as a tenured law professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law for twenty-two years, and as Chief Counsel and Senior Deputy Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C., a public interest law organization founded by President John F. Kennedy to enlist private lawyers in taking pro bono cases in civil rights.

We propose that one important explanation why employees from poorer families do not fare as well as their more fortunate co-workers’ concerns differences in the families themselves. We integrate research from sociology and psychology on differences between families of higher versus lower socioeconomic status (SES) with organizational research on specific pathways through which families can constrain employees’ work performance and success. This theoretical integration suggests that higher family demands (in terms of time and conflicting values) and lower family resources (in terms of instrumental support) among workers from poorer family backgrounds cause a negative home-to-work influence on employee personal resources, acting as a mechanism of disadvantage reproduction after people join the organization.

Materialism is a means by virtue of which people belonging to the consumer culture get satisfied with their present life ad lifestyle. However, there is a parallel notion that the happiness gained through materialism is short lived. The existing literature that reflects on cultural materialism mainly intends to analyse the historical context of certain socio-political and cultural phenomena from a radical and rebellious point of view. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is among some of the noteworthy litterateurs whose works are rich in philosophical undertones. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore how Coleridge criticized materialism through the use of these philosophical undertones. After conducting the study, it was found out that Coleridge’s works can be considered as tools for expressing the perils of materialism.

A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist, was published in 1788 by J. and A. M’Lean. The Federalist Papers serve as a primary source for interpretation of the Constitution, as they outline the philosophy and motivation of the proposed system of government.The authors of the Federalist Papers wanted to both influence the vote in favor of ratification and shape future interpretations of the Constitution. According to historian Richard Morris, they are an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer." In this biography for young adults, Mary A. Hamilton gives a British person’s perspective on the 16th President of the United States. A glowing tribute to “Honest Abe”, the author traces Lincoln’s ancestral roots and recounts his birth in Kentucky, his youth in Indiana, his adult life in Illinois and his years in the White House. She also provides a good background on the causes and course of the American Civil War. <BR><BR> Hamilton is not always historically precise. For example, she erroneously names Jefferson Davis as the Southern Democratic candidate for president running against Lincoln and Douglas in 1860 rather than John C. Breckinridge. However, overall “The Story of Abraham Lincoln” is a good summarization and interesting account of the life, values and politics of Lincoln. <BR><BR> Cautions: Chapter 7 contains a single use of an epithet for African-Americans in a quotation from a British magazine. Edmond Hamilton (1904 – 1977) had a career that began as a regular and frequent contributor to Weird Tales magazine. The first hardcover publication of Science Fiction stories was a Hamilton compilation, and he and E.E. “Doc” Smith are credited with the creation of the Space Opera type of story. He worked for DC Comics authoring many stories for their Superman and Batman characters. Hamilton was also married to fellow author Leigh Brackett. - Published in the May, 1962 issue of Amazing Stories “The Stars, My Brothers” gives us a re-animated astronaut plucked from a century in the past and presented with an alien world where the line between humans and animals is blurred. George Hamilton was the surgeon assigned to the frigate Pandora. The British Admiralty ordered the ship to the Pacific to arrest the Bounty mutineers and bring them back to England for trial. The commander, Captain Edward Edwards, also was ordered to chart the passage between Australia and New Guinea. While Edwards managed to arrest the mutineers still on Tahiti, he sank the Pandora on a reef near Australia. Hamilton tells this story and also the story of the crew's fate after the Pandora sank. “The Federalist Papers” are a collection of 85 linked essays that explain the construction of the U.S. government and why it was built that way. The Papers are regarded as the best pipeline into understanding the U.S. Constitution and the founding principles of the government it would establish. <br><br> I have endeavored here to present these essays, not as articles in a newspaper, but as you might have experienced them if you had sat in a comfortable tavern with a tankard in hand, and listened while these ardent men ranged in front of a friendly fireplace as they attempted to convince you of their arguments. <br><br> Following the Revolutionary War, the newly-independent United States of America were organized under the Articles of Confederation. This well-intentioned document was faulty to the purpose, and the new nation rapidly found itself in dire financial distress. <br><br> Consequently, in 1787 a Constitutional Convention was called to produce a new blueprint for the government. After completion, that plan was sent to the States in September of that year for ratification, but it immediately came under fire for the powers it granted to the central government. <br><br> In New York, views on either side were heated. To persuade the public to support the Constitution for ratification, Alexander Hamilton (who had been a delegate to the Convention) and John Jay (who had helped negotiate the treaty with Great Britain that ended the War), began a series of anonymous essays to educate the citizenry in how the government would be arranged, and why those choices had been made. Later, when Jay was rendered unable to continue by an attack of rheumatism, Virginian James Madison (another Convention delegate who was in New York, serving in the Confederation Congress) was recruited to fill in. <br><br> Each wrote essays that were signed “Publius,” the name of a general who had helped to found Rome, to conceal their identities, which might have led to difficulties as Hamilton and Madison had been inside the deliberations at the Convention.
