A Qing-era book in Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese describing four essential morals.

Chinese journalist Hu Xijin, the former Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Global Times outlet, said in a video posted to the Global Times YouTube channel on August 31, 2022 that recently-deceased former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev had been an intellectual with political idealism, but had also been naïve. He explained that Gorbachev had been ignorant of the “brutality” of geopolitics and had lacked control of the reforms he led in the USSR, and he said that in comparison to then-Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, Gorbachev’s “immaturity” was tragic. Hu elaborated that the same Western countries that are praising Gorbachev’s courage are “sparing no effort” in strangling Russia’s economy, and he said that the United States and the West are the ones that have reaped the benefits of the USSR’s collapse. In addition, he said that China has taken the USSR’s collapse as a “political lesson” that acts as a “vaccine” that is protecting China.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Worldwide, one of the drivers of substitution and adulteration is the cost of the natural resources (plants, animals, fungi) that are ingredients of traditional medicines. Relatively few studies have been done that link prices of traditional medicine ingredients to what drives changes in price, yet this is an important topic. Theoretically, prices have been widely considered as an economic indicator of resource scarcity. Rare, slow growing medicinal plants sell for high prices and common, less popular species for low prices. Price levels also influence the viability of farming vs. wild harvest (and incentives to overharvest high value species when tenure is weak). Prices can also influence the harvesting or buying behaviour of harvesters, traders or manufacturers. When prices are high, then there is a greater incentive to use cheaper substitute species or adulterants. As previous studies on herbal medicine ingredients have shown, adulteration applies in a wide variety of cases, including to some Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) species. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of which factors influenced changes in the market prices of document prices for four popular, but very different traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) species (2002 – 2017). Materials and methods: Fluctuations in market prices were followed over a 15-year period (2002–2017) for four very different TCM ingredients: two plant species (one wild harvested for fruits (Schisandra sphenanthera Rehder & E.H. Wilson) the other in a transition from wild harvest to cultivation (Paris polyphylla Smith), an animal species (the Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko L.)) and the entomophagous “caterpillar fungus” (Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Berk). G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones & Spatafora). Results: High prices of medicinal plants are widely considered to reflect resource scarcity. Real-time market prices for three of the four very different TCM species we studied all showed major price fluctuations. The exception was P. polyphylla, whose wild populations are widely known to be increasingly scarce, where there was a steady increase in price, with few fluctuations in the upward price trend. The three other species showed significant price fluctuations. These were driven by multiple factors. Ecological and biogeographic factors that influence abundance or scarcity of supply certainly played a role. But other factors were also influential. These included both national and global economic factors (the influence of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC)), national policy changes that in turn influenced businessmen giving expensive gifts (that included O. sinensis)), climate change (influencing fruiting success of S. sphenanthera), price speculation by traders and lack of information (e.g: reduction in G. gecko prices due to traders incorrectly believing that domestication would increase supplies). Conclusions: Price fluctuations in the four TCM species we examined are influenced by many factors and not just resource scarcity. And the situation is more complex than the trajectory based on Homma's (1992) model, where he predicted that higher prices would result in a shift to cultivation, thus replacing wild harvest. In case of both O. sinensis and P. polyphylla, Homma (1992, 1996) was right in terms of scarcity and high prices stimulating a major investment in cultivation (P. polyphylla) and artificial production (O. sinensis). But in both cases, intensive production through cultivation or artificial propagation do not yet occur on a large enough scale to reduce harvest of wild stocks. Substitution and adulteration occur with all four species. Improving information to medicinal plant traders on the supply status of TCM stocks, whether from wild harvest or from cultivation could benefit product quality, cultivation initiatives and conservation efforts.

Globally, teachers are trained to educate and assess children through matrices based on comparative competition, a practice that thrives on ranking. In an era of glocalization, how might educational systems cultivate classroom connections embracing diverse student gifts? This arts-based narrative inquiry explores fatherly life lessons of 17 undergraduate and six graduate students enrolled in an introductory qualitative research course at a large urban Chinese university. Building on the course instructor's model, students engaged in arts-based narrative inquiry to develop children's books on treasured fatherly life lessons that they then shared with second grade students at a local Chinese school. Drawing upon the "Confucian Analects" and Laozi's "Tao Te Ching," this study evidences empathy as rooted across cultures and ecologies, and that many fatherly life lessons take place in natural settings. This study encourages teacher education practice and research to engage arts-based autobiographical inquiry, and to explore empathy conceptualizations and expressions across cultures and ecologies. As "glocalization" brings together diverse groups, this work is important to create shared spaces for international connection and meaningful inter-institutional explorations.

The course is designed to train native English speakers to Level 3 Foreign Service Institute proficiency in comprehension and speaking, and to Level 2 proficiency in reading and writing Mandarin. Facility in reading, writing, and translating texts written in Chinese characters is emphasized. Instructional materials in the 12 lessons include dialogues, word lists, and exercises in reading, writing, and translation. The emphasis of the coure is on military science. (JB)

Chinese Lessons from Other Peoples' Wars (2011)

This monograph examines the transformation of military forces, the development of military doctrine and the influence of previous wars. It is an attempt to identify the driving factors of military transformation in general, to look into the role minor wars are playing in this process and to see whether there are constants of warfare, which are valid over a longer period of time within an otherwise rapidly changing environment. The thesis of the paper is that major wars determine the general direction of military change and minor military clashes are used to validate the direction. The role of military history in general is described and a theoretical model for military transformation based on organizational respective institutional theory and the balance-of-power- theory is developed. The monograph explains the factors influencing military transformation and its relationship to previous wars. In this context the relations between doctrine, concept, and strategy are laid down and the role of doctrine in the planning process - force planning and operations planning - is examined.

As one of the popular and promising instructional technologies, Internet is playing a more and more important role in educational field all over the world. Bringing Internet into classrooms is encouraged in many countries; however, their policy initiatives to achieve this vary. The present paper is an empirical and exploratory study, trying to explore the policy initiatives taken by Mainland of China and Taiwan to enable school classrooms to have access to Internet. The educational system and policy initiatives for bringing Internet into classroom are firstly addressed. Then, educational philosophies for these policy initiatives are discussed and are compared with that of in the United States (the E-Rate program). Challenges and recommendations for improving the policy initiatives are finally presented. (Contains 3 figures, 6 tables, and 15 notes.)
