4ERIC ED134894: Lonely Parents: Observations By Public Health Nurses Of Alienation In Child Abuse.

Public health nurses (n=191) were queried regarding their observations of alienation in families who abuse their children. Comparison was made of social isolation and powerlessness in abusive families and a control group of non-abusive families, through the Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and FIRO-B, with significant differences noted in both social isolation and powerlessness. Nurse respondents provided additional information for comparison regarding support systems available to families in times of crisis, numbers of friends, communication with spouses, and integration into the community Interferences in learning of the parental role was assessed through a number of indicators including ability to deal with the child's behavior and the parent's unrealistic expectations of the child. All of the hypotheses were sustained with the exception of the unrealistic expectations of the child, which only partially discriminated at a significant level of confidence. (Author)

7ERIC ED563300: Measurement Of Child Behavior Via Classroom Observations In The Good Behavior Game Professional Development Models Randomized Control Trial

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a classroom-based behavior management strategy aimed at reducing aggressive/disruptive behavior and socializing children into the role of student. GBG, delivered in first and second grades, has been shown to reduce rates of substance abuse and other deleterious outcomes into young adulthood (Brown, C.H. et al 2007, Ialongo, et al. 2001, Kellam, S.G. et al, 2008 and Poduska, J.M. et al. 2008, Kellam, S.G. et al 1998, Ialongo, N.S. et al. 1999), especially for students that were rated as aggressive, disruptive at entry into first grade/baseline by their teachers. Despite GBG being recognized as an evidence-based prevention program (National Registry of Evidence-based programs and Practices, NREPP, http://nrepp.samhsa.gov/), published data to date is mostly limited to African American and Anglo populations that are native English speakers. This study is a four-year IES Goal 3 project (R305A090446, PI Poduska) that was designed to understand the level of professional development (PD) required for teachers to implement and sustain the Good Behavior Game (GBG), a universal preventive intervention. Two models of PD are being compared with each other and with a control condition, in a randomized field trial. "GBG Basic," which provides group-based pre-implementation training to teachers supplemented by a group-based booster session, and "GBG w Coach," which has the same activities under "GBG Basic" plus a coach who works directly in the classroom with the teacher. This trial takes place in multilingual context of Houston Independent School district. Five tables are appended.

As requested, the General Accounting Office conducted a survey in Feburary 1988 of military installations with child development centers in the continental United States. It was found that the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps had a combined capacity to serve about 62,000 children at one time at the 215 installations responding. This figure included the number of spaces available in both child development centers and family day care homes, the two programs where child care is most often provided. Department of Defense operating costs for the child development center program worldwide totaled 134.3 million dollars in fiscal year 1987. About one-third of these costs were met with congressional appropriations, and two-thirds with nonappropriated funds, such as parent user fees. Although military child care programs have grown significantly over the past few years, installations cannnot adequately respond to all requests for center-based care from service members on active duty. Of the installations surveyed, 185 maintained lists that contained the names of about 25,000 children waiting for care.(RH)

12ERIC ED393541: Comparisons Between ECERS Ratings Of Individual Pre-School Centres And The Results Of Target Child Observations: Do They Match Or Do They Differ?

This paper describes a study carried out in Portugal on the effects of three different preschool curricula on children's entry into primary school. These curricula are High Scope, Formal Skills, and Movimento da Escola Moderna. The sample consisted of 223 children followed longitudinally from nursery to primary school. Systematic observations were made in 15 nurseries. The subjects were first assessed when they had just left nursery and then 9 months later. The research was designed to answer the following questions: (1) are there differences in the day-to-day experiences of children and staff in the three nursery curricula; (2) is attendance at different kinds of preschool associated with higher score on literacy and mathematics in grade one compared to children who start school without nursery experience; and (3) is attendance at different kinds of preschool associated with higher scores on perceived competence and social acceptance compared to children who start school without nursery experience? The results showed that attendance in the High Scope program was associated with higher scores on curricular outcomes of reading and writing. Social acceptance was lower in the Formal Skills group. Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) scores were very similar for the High Scope and Movimento da Escola Moderna groups although both these curricula differed significantly on ECERS from the Formal Skills. Detailed observations showed that children and staff in the three preschool curricula engaged in different classroom activities. Children in the High Scope nurseries spent more time in pretend play, stories, rhymes, songs, informal conversation and problem solving. All these activities may explain their greater progress in reading and writing when they entered school. (Author/MOK)

This paper describes a study carried out in Portugal on the effects of three different preschool curricula on children's entry into primary school. These curricula are High Scope, Formal Skills, and Movimento da Escola Moderna. The sample consisted of 223 children followed longitudinally from nursery to primary school. Systematic observations were made in 15 nurseries. The subjects were first assessed when they had just left nursery and then 9 months later. The research was designed to answer the following questions: (1) are there differences in the day-to-day experiences of children and staff in the three nursery curricula; (2) is attendance at different kinds of preschool associated with higher score on literacy and mathematics in grade one compared to children who start school without nursery experience; and (3) is attendance at different kinds of preschool associated with higher scores on perceived competence and social acceptance compared to children who start school without nursery experience? The results showed that attendance in the High Scope program was associated with higher scores on curricular outcomes of reading and writing. Social acceptance was lower in the Formal Skills group. Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) scores were very similar for the High Scope and Movimento da Escola Moderna groups although both these curricula differed significantly on ECERS from the Formal Skills. Detailed observations showed that children and staff in the three preschool curricula engaged in different classroom activities. Children in the High Scope nurseries spent more time in pretend play, stories, rhymes, songs, informal conversation and problem solving. All these activities may explain their greater progress in reading and writing when they entered school. (Author/MOK)

In teacher training curricula, books are presented as an ideal material for building and enriching young children's language. Yet, the routine of reading at home with children is hardly ever mentioned. In this chapter, the author proposes analyses of story-reading activities from a usage-based and first language acquisition perspective. The goal is to raise methodological questions for the professionalization of future kindergarten teachers who engage in L2 teaching with children aged three to six. This paper questions the links between the home and school environments in a context of L2 learning with beginners. The link between L1 and L2 acquisition is pertinent, as parents' practices and language use when interacting with children who do not master their mother tongue might inform the design of training programs for kindergarten teachers who teach a foreign language to pupils from three to six. The chapter is organized as follows. First, the author presents a review of Shared Book Reading (SBR) activities and the use of books during adult-child interaction at home and in class. Second, the author presents an analytical approach to language use and development and its application to children's linguistic and interactional competences: the author presents results from her own projects on reading at home and propose qualitative multimodal analyses of the data to account for the participation framework and content of SBR activities. Corpus-based analyses of parent-child SBR activities at home will contribute to show how the parents in the corpus naturally and spontaneously engaged in SBR activities with their children. Third, based on the analyses of the author, she draws some guidelines for the professionalization of preservice teachers who are trained in universities, keeping in mind that the ecology of reading books at home significantly differs from that of reading books in class. In this chapter the author aims to theorize parents' spontaneous behavior in order to provide professional guidelines for teachers in the context of story-reading activities in a second language in class with children who cannot read yet. The analyses focus on how meaning is co-constructed by the adult, the child, the story in the book, and the surrounding environment by taking into consideration all the semiotic resources that the speakers have at their disposal (vocal productions, words, actions, gestures, and facial expressions). To analyze how meaning is constructed in this context, particular attention is paid to the book itself, its written and visual contents, as well as how it is manipulated by the participants. 34The Mind Of The Child : Observations Concerning The Mental Development Of The Human Being In The First Years Of Life

In teacher training curricula, books are presented as an ideal material for building and enriching young children's language. Yet, the routine of reading at home with children is hardly ever mentioned. In this chapter, the author proposes analyses of story-reading activities from a usage-based and first language acquisition perspective. The goal is to raise methodological questions for the professionalization of future kindergarten teachers who engage in L2 teaching with children aged three to six. This paper questions the links between the home and school environments in a context of L2 learning with beginners. The link between L1 and L2 acquisition is pertinent, as parents' practices and language use when interacting with children who do not master their mother tongue might inform the design of training programs for kindergarten teachers who teach a foreign language to pupils from three to six. The chapter is organized as follows. First, the author presents a review of Shared Book Reading (SBR) activities and the use of books during adult-child interaction at home and in class. Second, the author presents an analytical approach to language use and development and its application to children's linguistic and interactional competences: the author presents results from her own projects on reading at home and propose qualitative multimodal analyses of the data to account for the participation framework and content of SBR activities. Corpus-based analyses of parent-child SBR activities at home will contribute to show how the parents in the corpus naturally and spontaneously engaged in SBR activities with their children. Third, based on the analyses of the author, she draws some guidelines for the professionalization of preservice teachers who are trained in universities, keeping in mind that the ecology of reading books at home significantly differs from that of reading books in class. In this chapter the author aims to theorize parents' spontaneous behavior in order to provide professional guidelines for teachers in the context of story-reading activities in a second language in class with children who cannot read yet. The analyses focus on how meaning is co-constructed by the adult, the child, the story in the book, and the surrounding environment by taking into consideration all the semiotic resources that the speakers have at their disposal (vocal productions, words, actions, gestures, and facial expressions). To analyze how meaning is constructed in this context, particular attention is paid to the book itself, its written and visual contents, as well as how it is manipulated by the participants. 35ERIC ED128426: Predicting School Outcomes From Observations Of Child Behavior In Classrooms.

A modified Montessori nursery school program operating in a private urban school serving a racially heterogeneous population was evaluated. The project called for investigating the educational effects of the program on both Head Start and middle class children. The impression was that children participated in the project differentially. That is, they had unique patterns of work and play when they were given a choice of different activities. The evaluation procedures spanned the entire school year. Tests were administered to a total sample of 58 children, divided equally by social class during the first and last month of the school year. The classroom observations were recorded for a subset of this group, which contained 43 children. This sample of 43 children was also equally divided by social class. Each Head Start child was pair-matched to the extent possible on age, sex, classroom, and previous school experience with a middle class child. Twenty six of these children were above four years of age and received the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence and the Stanford-Binet, L. M., the remaining children received the Merrill Palmer Scale of Mental Tests and the Stanford-Binet. Classroom observations were conducted during the period between testings. Findings are discussed in terms of the observational data, the test data, and the relationship between the two. (RC)

This report describes a program designed to promote the use of recorded observations in Child Development Associate (CDA) advisors' assessments of interns in early childhood education at a southwestern community college. Sixty-one advisors participated in the program, which consisted of a series of five staff development meetings, formulation of a new lesson plan to be included in pre-service orientation, and revision of a segment of the advisor handbook. Surveys of advisors' experience with competency-based assessment, review of advisors' reports, and an on-going Context Input Process Product (CIPP) evaluation were used in formulating the training program. Results of the program indicated that the advisors increased their use of competency-based recorded observation in meetings with interns and participated enthusiastically in the staff development meetings, and that the design of the meetings successfully promoted reflective discussion among participants. The program also prompted discussion among participants over whether the purpose of recorded observations was to provide encouragement or assess competence. Six appendixes contain the CDA advisor survey instrument as well as samples of program materials. Contains 31 references. (ME)

    "The Life of Jesse Harding Pomeroy: The Most Remarkable Case in the History of Crime or Criminal Law" by E. Luscomb Haskell was published in Boston, Massachusetts in 1892 by the Harvard Law School Library, and is part of "The Making of the Modern Law, Legal Treatises, 1800-1926" series. Remarkable insight into the life of Pomeroy prior to, during, and following the crimes for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the tender age of 14, this is an excellent complement to Pomeroy's "autobiography" which was published immediately following his trial in 1874. The advantages offered by this short book are that it was researched and published less than twenty years after the trial and conviction; that the accused was still alive at the time of publication; and that a large amount relates to the legal perspective of one of the most fascinating and confounding episodes of American criminology. Jesse Harding Pomeroy was sentenced to life in prison in 1874 at the age of 14 for the commission of two murders, and has therefore been referred to as "America's youngest serial killer" to this day. Other books have been written about Pomeroy over the years, as it makes for a most interesting character study, in addition to its legal implications, journalistic influence, and the effect of public outcry for justice and safety were preeminent. - Summary by Roger Melin
