1Building Bridges: Bisbee Arizonaâs Ethnic Cleansing Of 1,300 Immigrant Mineworkers!
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg ****************************************** Which Side Are You On: The Story of Bisbee Arizonaâs Ethnic Cleansing of 1,300 Immigrant Mineworkers! with Katherine Benton-Cohen, Professor of History, Institute for the Study of International Migration, Georgetown University The border town of Bisbee, Arizona is known for a few things. First, thereâs that massive copper mine that was turned into a tourist attraction back in the seventies. Then, thereâs that can-do spirit that wonât let said town â or mine â die, no matter how much times change. Oh, and thereâs also the hundred-year-old ethnic cleansing that everyone is eager to forget, including those concerned that the atrocity might reflect badly on that damn mine, which kickstarted the event a century ago. We tell the story of Bisbeeâs ignoble, anti-immigrant past to juxtapose it as an admonition against the advent of our anti-immigrant, anti-worker behavior today. which is recounted in Robert Greene's new film "Bisbee '17" We talk with Katherine Benton-Cohen about the 1917 labor strike against Phelps Dodge, a copper mining company based in Bisbee, Arizona, a town seven miles from the Mexican border. The labor action was cut short when 2,000 strikebreakers and hastily deputized citizens rounded up 1,300 protesters, many of them members of the radical, Industrial Workers of the World, aka The Wobblies. In this process two strikers were killed. The strikers were taken across state lines by train and dumped in the New Mexico desert with a warning to never return. The event tore apart families and created divisions in Bisbee and the surrounding county that linger to this day. One of the most harrowing anecdotes recounted here finds a sheriff's deputy arresting his own brother, a striking union member, at gunpoint in his own home. ************************** Please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. Ralph Engelman, VP, LIU Faculty Federation (LIUFF); Chair, Jounalism Department . Kiyonda Hester - Social Worker Graduate Student Long Island University, President , LIU Activists for Social Justice After failing to reach an agreement on a new faculty union contract, which expired on Aug. 31, the universityâs administration then locked faculty members out of their offices and their email accounts and canceled their health insurance over the Labor Day weekend. "Thatâs never happened before in the history of L.I.U. to my knowledge, or in the history of higher education,â said Jessica Rosenberg, a professor of social work and the president of the faculty federation, which represents about 230 full-time faculty members and several hundred adjunct professors. On Tuesday afternoon, the union membership rejected the administrationâs latest offer by a vote of 226 to 10. âThe faculty has spoken,â Professor Rosenberg said. In that offer, according to the union, the administration asked for a reduction in salaries for new adjuncts. It also eliminated a clause in place since 2000 that promised parity in pay for Brooklyn faculty members and those at the largest campus within the universityâs system, C. W. Post in Brookville, N.Y. So, whatâs the key to âunlockingâ the now locked out teachers? ***************** FCP workers invite all home attendants to join them in demanding stolen wages, and ending mandatory 24-hour shifts with National Mobilization Against Sweatshops(NMASS) Aint' I A Woman Campaign Home attendants who have worked as many as two decades for First Chinese Presbyterian Community Affairs Home Attendant Corp. (FCP) caring for elderly and ill patients in their homes, were forced to work 24-hour shifts for as many as seven days a week, but paid for only 12 or 13 of these hours. The workers were also denied overtime pay. But, theyâre not taking this lying down. Joined by workers from Chinese American Planning Council and workers from other agencies, the FCP home attendants are demanding that FCP resolve their case immediately by paying the workers their owed wages, and theyâre headed to court. ***************** Institutional Racism in the U.S. labor market - What is to be done? with William Spriggs, Chief Economist to the AFL-CIO and professor in, and former chair of the Department of Economics at Howard University. Bill is also former assistant secretary for the Office of Policy at the United States Department of Labor The so-called recovery of the US economy has not been equally kind to everyone. Even as the unemployment rate has decreased, the unemployment rate for African Americans, is currently more than twice as high as that for white Americans. Indeed, nationwide in 2015, 9.6% of African-Americans were unemployed compared with 4.6% of whites. This 2 to 1 ratio of Arican American to white unemployment has persisted for at least the last 50 years. This unemployment gap is not one of skill or education , it is becuase of the very real and presistent discrimination prevalent in the U.S. labor market. And, did you know that it would take 228 years for African-American families to amass the wealth of white families ? **************** Tune in at 6 - 8 am to Wednesday Edition hosted by Mimi Rosenberg ************************************** In addition to being broadcast over WBAI, 99.5 FM in NYC and the tri-state area 7 - 8 pm EST Mondays, Building Bridges is syndicated to 50 broadcast and internet radio stations in the US, Canada and the UK Building Bridges National Edition is regularly broadcast over: WLSL, Dade City, FL WMNB, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina WZBC, Boston, Mass. 3Building Bridges: NFL Lockout Threat With Dave Zirin
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition - 26:33 Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** Austerity & Lockout Threats Roil NFL & NBA with Dave Zirin, author of "Bad Sports: How Owners are Ruining the Games we Love" The former Indiana guard A.J. Moye starts rehabilitation after having a stroke following a head-on collision with a teammate. There has been an avalanche of media coverage of the helmet to helmet hits, and the cover of Sports Illustrated is about concussions. Meanwhile the response of the owners has been to sue 262 players over their workers compensation, and it still takes at least a 3 year NFL career to get any health care after retirement, and oh yes the League seeks to extend the playing season and threatens drastic cuts or elimination of health benefits to the players. Plus Host of Edge of Sports Radio Dave Zirin and former NBA guard Laron Profit speak with NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith about the players standing strong against the league's attempts to break their will. Smith also reveals that the NFL owners share the same legal representation as the ownership groups in the NBA, MLB, and the NHL. All of these leagues are in labor talks as 2011 marks the year in which the four major sports' collective bargaining agreements expire. ************************* please notify us if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 4Building Bridges: Stiglitz: Deficits, Unemployment & Economic Growth
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition - 27:20 Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** The State of the Union Deficit Reduction and Common Sense: Invest in the Economy, Reduce the Military Budget & Tax the Rich with Joseph Stiglitz, University Professor Columbia University, Recipient Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics The ink was hardly dry on the massive compromise federal tax bill when Republican leaders restarted their call for spending cuts in the new Congress to close the deficit. But Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz sets the record straight in his speech before the Roosevelt Institute. He says that the main cause of the deficits is the recession which premature deficit reduction would cause to deteriorate further. He also offers us a way to rebuild our economy which would also fight the increasing mal-distribution of wealth in this country by taxing the rich, reducing the military budget and investing in our cities, our infrastructure and new technologies to increase our productive capacities to increase economic growth. ************************* Please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 5Building Bridges: Ta-Nehisi Coates Fighting For Reparatory Justice Now
By Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash
Building Bridges over WBAI Radio, 99.5FM with Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash ***************************** Fighting for Reparatory Justice Now: Demands for Change, to Build Organizations that Become a Mighty Movement Also an exclusive, Ta-Nehisi Coates, reads from his block-buster memoir to his son âBetween the World and Meâ On this one month anniversary of the murders of the Charleston nine, and the one year anniversary of the death of Eric Garner the question looms how we can progress from a moment of protest into a movement for change. How do we go beyond a slogan and a hash tag to grappling with power relationships? What brings people together and can sustain them organizationally and how can those organizations seek to become a mighty movement capable of securing reforms, while working to fundamentally change a society structured around militarism, economic inequality and discrimination? Can Reparatory Justice, reparations for the repair of the economic, cultural, psychological, spiritual and physical damage done and wealth extraction from the labor of subjugated people become the theme around which to galvanize the largely reactive, disparate efforts that cry out that Black Life Matters into a mighty collective force for redress and change throughout the diaspora?. The process of the extraction of wealth and opportunities from Africans in America has never been accidental but an ingrained and devastating dimension of the development of the American nation. The systemic and individualized crimes against Native People and enslaved Africans committed by European and American colonialists have resulted in the gross exploitation that is directly responsible for the underdevelopment of nations and set up road blocks to the development of Africans in America and continue to result in murder and mayhem against Blacks, who are still fighting for control over their very bodies and minds Now, the Reparatory Justice movement, gaining steam amongst Caribbean nations, who have designed a Reparations Program to compel the colonialists to materially address the legacy of slavery with all its contemporary manifestations has gained new momentum and can serve as a motivator and organizer and create the ties that bind us together. Reparatory Justice strikes at the core of the existing societal values and structural inequities. It addresses all those affected by and who seek to root out the poisonous vines of white supremacy running deep within all the policies and practices of this country. "Besides the crime which consists in violating the law, and varying from the right rule of reason, whereby a man so far becomes degenerate, and declares himself to quit the principles of human nature, and to be a noxious creature, there is commonly injury done to some person or other, and some other man receives damage by his transgression: in which case he who hath received any damage, has, besides the right of punishment common to him with other men, a particular right to seek reparation." â John Locke, âSecond Treatiseâ "By our unpaid labor and suffering, we have earned the right to the soil, many times over and over, and now we are determined to have it." â Anonymous, 1861 Featuring: Ta-Nehisi Coates An American writer, journalist, and educator. Coates is a senior editor for The Atlantic, and blogger for that publication's website where he writes about cultural, social and political issues. Coates has worked for The Village Voice, Washington City Paper, and Time. He has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, The Washington Monthly, O, and other publications. In 2008, Coates published The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir about coming of age in West Baltimore and its effect on him. In it, he discusses the influence of his father, a former Black Panther; the prevailing street crime of the era and its effects on his older brother; his own troubled experience attending Baltimore-area schools; and his eventual graduation and enrollment in Howard University. His writings on race, such as his September 2012 Atlantic cover piece "Fear of a Black President" and his June 2014 feature "The Case for Reparations," have been especially praised, and have won his blog a place on the Best Blogs list by Time magazine and the Hillman Prize for Opinion & Analysis Journalism.

6Building Bridges: The Battle To Save The Post Office With APWU Pres Dimondstein And Danny Glover
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition with Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash ************************ The Peril for Postal Workers and Post Offices, Why Weâre Boycotting Staples and Opening a Window for "Postal Bankingâ with Mark Dimondstein, Pres. American Postal Workers Union (APWU) In the battle to save the Post Office and good union jobs, protests have escalated into a national boycott of Staples for the proposed deal with the Post Office to privatize retail postal services. Internal USPS documents reveal that the Staples deal is an attempt to reduce the cost of âtraditionalâ postal union labor and shift it to low-wage labor. While the Post Office tries to save money by degrading their workers' remuneration, it ignores a proposal by its own Inspector General - postal banking. President Dimondstein said "basic, non-profit banking would be a great and real benefit to the people of this country, and a good answer to what I call 'the Wall Street Banksters,' who devastated the economy and with it the lives of millions of people." Plus Danny Glover Joins the Battle to Save the Post Office Danny Glover gave an impassioned speech on the final day of the APWUâs Convention, declaring that he would be part of the fight to keep the Postal Service in the hands of the people. As the son of postal workers, Glover described how his parentsâ involvement in the union influenced his life, pointing out that they became postal employees shortly after the U.S. armed forces and federal employment were integrated in the midst of a great movement in the country. He said the fight against turning over postal duties to Staples and the campaign to use the USPS âfor the many varied services it has the capacity to performâ are important. âWe, the people, own our post office, And weâre going to fight for that and we will win.â ********************* Please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 7Building Bridges: The Chronic Black Unemployment Crisis
By Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition - 27:46 Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Jobs: How Racism, Global Economics, and the New Jim Crow Fuel Black America's Crippling Jobs Crisis with Andy Kroll, Assoc. Editor, TomDispatch and reporter at Mother Jones magazine The Labor Department released the latest figures on unemployment and payrolls - the unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent, and employers added only 18,000 jobs last month, below the 150,000 threshold that economists say is needed to prevent the unemployment rate from increasing. The figures were dismal for the working class, however what isnât delineated and probed within that general dilemma is the unemployment rate for black workers, almost double the percent rate for the rest of the population - it's twice the 8% white jobless rate. Since the 1940s, the jobless rate for blacks in America has held grimly steady at twice the rate for whites. The question of why has divided economists, historians, and sociologists for nearly as long. 8Building Bridges Radio: The Coup In Benton Harbor, Michigan
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition - 27:59 Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** The People versus the Corporations in Americaâs Rust Belt The Coup in Benton Harbor, Michigan with Rev. Edward Pinkney, Community Activist & Leader in the Fight Against The Takeover of Benton Harbor For the residents of Benton Harbor, Michigan the question is will America have prosperity and democracy, or live in poverty under the heel of open corporate power. Thereâs been a coup in Benton Harbor, First, Whirlpool controlled Benton Harbor and now the City of Benton Harbor has become the battleground for Michiganâs new emergency financial management law. The law gives an accountant, Joseph Harris, dubbed an emergency manager the right to tear up labor contracts. And, in Detroit district wide layoff notices hit every one of its Public Schools. The 5,466 unionized employees called the move the largest âone fell swoopâ firing of teachers in union memory. Additionally, the Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobbâs concurrent announcement that he plans to unilaterally modify the Detroit Federation of Teachersâ collective bargaining agreement is the first test of a sweeping new state law. ************* Fighting Back with Frances Fox Piven, Professor of Political Science and Sociology, The Graduate Center, City University of New York Frances Fox Piven, a distinguished professor, legendary activist, and writer for more than a year has been accused by Fox news host Glenn Beck, who employees a graphic of a tree to do so of being an advocate of violence and plotting since 1966 to overthrow the system. Well Piven now closes our programming, with our support, respect and affection as she addresses a national youth audience Teach-In. Youâll hear Piven reference the tree and rather use the metaphor to advocate organizing movements for peace and justice. ************* please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 9Building Bridges: Protocol For The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Participatory Mentoring And Empowerment Program For Female And Genderqueer Youth Of Colour In Germany
By Susanne Birnkammer, Claudia Calvano, Felicia Boma Lazaridou, Celiana Kiefer and Hannes Rothe
Female and genderqueer youth of Colour in Germany face structural, institutional, and interpersonal barriers to academic and professional participation, especially in psychological and psychosocial fields. This study aims to develop and evaluate a participatory, intersectionality-informed Mentoring and Empowerment Program (MEP) to foster educational engagement, mental health, and access to psychosocial professions. This interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary project is co-developed with key stakeholders and includes (a) a psychologically-informed, discrimination-sensitive coaching module to identify intrapersonal strengths and talents; (b) integration of mentors and role models of Colour to share educational pathways; and (c) a student-led mentoring component to jointly explore and overcome access barriers. A digital storytelling platform will facilitate peer-to-peer science communication and serve as a sustainable knowledge transfer tool. The study investigates: (1) experiences of discrimination and educational barriers among youth and especially female and/or genderqueer youth of Colour; (2) conditions for successful academic participation; (3) the feasibility, acceptability, and potential effectiveness of the MEP; (4) user engagement with the digital storytelling toolbox; and (5) strategies for long-term dissemination. Expected Outcomes: The project will contribute to the structural transformation of academic and psychosocial education settings and provide a model for diversifying student access to psychology and related fields.

11Building Bridges: Bangladesh Garment Workers Tragedy Again; Beyond Corporate Capitalism And State Socialism
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges over WBAI radio, 99.5FM with Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash Mon., April 29, 2013, 7 - 8 pm EST ******************************** The Blood, Sweat & Tears Of Bangladeshâs Garment Workers Stain The Clothes of Multi-National Corps. Who Reap Huge Profits From Workers' Misery with Barbara Briggs, Asst. Dir., Institute for Global Labor & Human Rights and Kalpona Atker, Ex. Dir., Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity To date, more than 382 are confirmed dead, 2,044 people have been rescued, more than 1,000 of them injured and 1,000 people are unaccounted for, or still trapped inside the concrete wreckage of the collapsed garment factory in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the Western multinational corporations who subcontract sewing their brands to Bangladesh, an economy where 80% of its exports are from the apparel trade stubbornly refuse to join workplace safety plans in Bangladesh. They still refuse to compensate the injured and the families of those who previously died sewing their brands. Since the infamous Tazreen factory fire blaze in November where 112 died there have been dozens more factory fires since and now hundreds killed in this week's Rana Plaza building collapse. How many people will have to sacrifice their lives for the corporate bottom line? ******************* What Then Must We Do? with Gar Alperovitz, author, What Then Must We Do? and The Next American Revolution: Beyond Corporate Capitalism and State Socialism While there's been no shortage of commentary about the structural crisis plaguing the American economic and political system, from wage stagnation and chronic unemployment to unchecked corporate and state power and growing inequality, analyses that offer practical, politically viable solutions to these problems have been few and far between. Gar Alperovitz is a rare and stunning exception. Through his new book and film and his ongoing research and activism, Alperovitz highlights efforts already under way in thousands of communities across the U.S., from co-ops and community land trusts to municipal, state, and federal initiatives to organize and democratize capital. Alperovitz marshals years of research to show how bottom-up strategies can work to check monopolistic corporate power, democratize wealth, and empower communities. ******************* Visit our web site - www.buildingbridgesradio.org

Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition -27:53 Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg ************************* Hundreds of Thousands Continue The March For Immigrant Rights with Amy Sugimori, Executive Director La Fuente and Laura Vasquez, Legislative Analyst, Immigration Policy Project, La Raza There are more than 11 million immigrants in the country, and efforts to fix the current immigration system have failed in recent years. Liberals have sought a path for citizenship for undocumented workers, while conservatives have been just as adamant in opposing what they have called plans for amnesty. Both the Democrats and the Republicans do support efforts to secure the border with Mexico, albeit with some tactical differentiation and degree of militarization. 14Building Bridges: Peoples Organization For Progress On Bernie Sanders; Puerto Rico Drowns In Debt
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges over WBAI Radio, 99.5FM with Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash Mon., April 11, 7 â 8 pm EST ***************************** Vulture Hedge Funds Circle on Higher Ground as Puerto Rico Drowns in Debt with University of Puerto Rico Prof. Rafael Bernabe Riefkohl, Working People's Party spokesperson and candidate for the Governor of Puerto Rico, and noted co-author of Puerto Rico in the American Century A History since 1898 Puerto Ricoâs fiscal perils are currently in the news. It is an island with a poverty rate approaching 50 percent, a public debt that amounts to over $20,000 per inhabitant (more than its median income of $19,518). While most of the attention in Puerto Ricoâs case focuses on technical issues relating to the solvency of municipal bonds and austerity measures, the history of U.S. policies have resulted in more than three and a half million Puerto Ricans being treated as second class citizens. With a poverty rate of more than 45 percent (more than double that of Mississippi), Puerto Rico has had serious long-term economic problems that, like its current massive public debt, have been historically papered over. Meanwhile, the hedge fund vultures and Wall Street banks and lawyers charging over $1.4 billion in a seven-year period for charges like swap termination fees are circling Puerto Rico. They are sensing a fiscal death spiral they can feed off and caring little about the consequences for nearly four million residents as they manipulate a financial system largely devoid of any social conscience. The bottom line is that Puerto Rico is the United Statesâ largest colony that it decided to take by force 117 years ago and has since treated like a resented orphan it has consistently undernourished politically and economically. Puerto Ricoâs current fiscal crisis is, in this sense, really a crisis of American colonial policies and will the United States accept responsibility for the negative consequences of its imperialist past? Prof. Barnabe Riefkohl, candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico talks about this and approaches for the Islandâs recovery and more long term solutions for Puerto Ricoâs fiscal problems. ****************************** New Jerseyâs Powerful Grassroots Peoples Organization for Progress Takes Bernie Sanders to Heart with Larry Hamm, veteran activist, Chairman the Peopleâs Organization for Progress POP has rarely departed from a long-standing policy of not supporting candidates for office and engaged in a rigorous debate and careful consideration before reaching its position on how to relate to the 2016 presidential election. POPâs Chairman Larry Hamm acknowledged the struggle of Bernie Sanders to date to build support in urban communities, specifically with Black and Latino voters. âIt did come up and it will continue to come up, but the fact remains that many of his basic positions will benefit black people,â said the activist. âSingle payer healthcare, raising the minimum wage, affordable college, rebuilding crumbling infrastructure. Although those specific platform planks may not be addressed specifically to African- Americans, black people know that they will benefit from those things.â Sanders, who had a campaign rally stopped by young Black Lives Matter activists, has by far, the most left leaning stance on all of the issues, especially the economic and racial justice issues that matter most to the organization. âBernie Sanders is the first self-described socialist to ever have gotten this close to the Presidency of the United States,â said founder and chairman Lawrence Hamm. âWhile we should be deeply concerned by how Republican candidates like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have taken the Republican Party so far to the right, we, on the left, should be just as active as they are and should give serious consideration to how the Sanders campaign could possibly take the Democratic Party from the center right to the left,â said Hamm. ***************** Tune in at 6 - 8 am to Wednesday Edition hosted by Mimi Rosenberg ************************************** In addition to being broadcast over WBAI, 99.5 FM in NYC and the tri-state area 7 - 8 pm EST Mondays, Building Bridges is syndicated to 50 broadcast and internet radio stations in the US, Canada and the UK Building Bridges National Edition is regularly broadcast over: WZBC, Boston, Mass. 15Building Bridges: Que Viva Puerto Rico Libre!; "Darn You Masters Of War"
By Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash
Building Bridges over WBAI Radio, 99.5FM with Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash Mon., April 16, 7 â8 pm EST ********************************* Que Viva Puerto Rico Libre! with Giovani Roberto, is a Puerto Rican social justice activist and organizer for the Center for Political, Educational and Cultural Development (CDPEC) based in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Roberto is a former student leader of the militant 2010-2011 mobilizations and strikes at the University of Puerto Rico and is an organizer with Centro de Apoyo Mutuo - CAM (Center of Mutual Support), Caguas, who will be discussing how its projects and others, are creating alternative solutions to meet the basic sustenance needs of the Puerto Rican people after Hurricane Maria. and David Galarza, is a Puerto Rican labor and community activist who has worked with many of the frontline organizations in Puerto Rico including Comedores Sociales and Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas. Giovani Roberto explains how implementing Centro de Apoyo Mutuo ~ Caguas (âCAMâ) principles of "ayuda mutua y esfuerzo propio" (mutual help and self- effort) is a way of creating a new, regenerative Puerto Rico. CAM principles contrast to the neoliberal, colonial policies in Puerto Rico which seek to eliminate public services and infrastructure, and compromise natural resources for the benefit of private corporate interests. Roberto believes that the ethic of 'mutual help and self-effort' has already proven effective in creating a viable, alternative solution for the people of Puerto Rico to rejuvenate the Island. CAM appeared 8 days after Hurricane Maria, occupying abandoned space, and began providing services such as meals, material resources, acupuncture and alternative therapies, and workshops to the public while receiving support from local community volunteers, and later from supporters outside the Island. 16Building Bridges : Content And Learning Strategies For ESL
By Chamot, Anna Uhl, O'Malley, J. Michael and Küpper, Lisa
Soon, CAMS were being organized across the Island. 24ERIC ED365200: Building Bridges: Using State Policy To Foster And Sustain Collaboration.
By ERIC
In the school-college partnership movement state policy can play an important role in sustaining partnerships as part of an active general strategy for educational change. Individual institutions and communities cannot solve the social problems facing the nation without working in cooperation with a broad network of other agencies and communities. Policymakers and educators have begun to re-examine the priorities and strategies that underlie domestic initiatives in the states and the nation. Collaboration has resulted in successful programs that make an impact on youth, families, education, and social systems. Recent collaborations have involved agencies and institutions planning together and setting mutual goals, engaging in collaborative action, trying to evaluate the impacts of collaborative strategies, and choosing joint budgeting. Successful collaboration involving higher education has three attributes: (1) mutual objectives driving joint planning, (2) new infrastructures that support collaborative goals, and (3) objective, long-term evaluation. State policy can support this movement by reviewing teacher education, interagency collaboration, and funding formulas and by considering policy levers such as incentives to foster multi-agency cooperation, coordination with federal programs, and expansion of existing partnerships. Eight key questions for state policy makers are suggested. (JB)

25ERIC EJ1075896: Feasibility Of Building Bridges Between School And Homes In Developing ESL Literacy: The SPIRE Project
By ERIC
This paper presents a feasible framework for building bridges between schools and homes to develop five year olds ESL literacy skills, using storybooks as a springboard. A reading program, i.e. Smart Partnership in Reading in English (SPIRE) was designed in response to the government's aspiration to raise literacy rates to 100% by 2020 and the Minister of Education's call for both parents and teachers to play a more active role for reading to be developed as part of the Malaysian culture. Evidence of the positive effects of storybook reading abounds in the literature and various successful reading programs that bridges schools and home to develop L1 literacy have been carried out, particularly in the UK and USA. However, a similar approach appears to be not adopted in Malaysia. Hence, the SPIRE project was conceptualised to make schools more "permeable" and to move L2 literacy from the classroom into the L2 naturalistic context at homes. 25 multiracial children, their parents and the class teacher participated in this project. Storybooks and other multimedia materials were frequently and repeatedly read/listened to in school, and were taken home for parents to scaffold their children's ESL literacy development at home. The mixed method approach, using numerous instruments was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the project. The study found that the children's progress corresponded to the storybook reading experiences at home. The children, whose parents displayed higher levels of involvement made faster progress compared to the children whose parents were less involved. Consequently, 16 children made substantial improvements and were independent readers at the end of the six months project.

38ERIC ED329752: Building Bridges Of Meaning: The Role Of Contextual Literacy.
By ERIC
The importance of considering social contexts--workplace, family, and community networks--in devising adult literacy programs has emerged over the past decade as the clear consensus of adult literacy research. Equally important have been the attempts by field researchers and federal policymakers to use these findings in setting up demonstration programs and in providing general guidance on how to establish such programs in different adult contexts. Among the more important implications of a contextual policy approach has been the call for more comprehensive approaches to serving adults. One innovation in adult literacy development has been the family literacy strategy. However, family and workplace literacy programs, as currently structured, need to be more informed by the cultural or social context of program participants. Barriers to implementation of contextual literacy policy include the issues of transfer, definition, measurement, and effective literacy instruction. To meet the challenges of adult literacy development, a better understanding of the cultural contexts in which adults function is required. Significant bodies of research illuminate the importance of cultural knowledge for more successful educational intervention. Policymakers at the state level must tailor literacy strategies that are informed by the particular social contexts of their communities. (18 references) (YLB)

39Building Bridges, Perspectives On Baptist Unity

Delegation participants toured San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, and San Salvador, cities wracked by escalating violence, poverty, and impunity that has driven unprecedented levels of migration from Central America since the 1980s. Iván Espinoza-Madrigal will talk about the delegationâs findings and raise awareness of the conditions driving migration from the regionâand the negative consequences that await an estimated 250,000 TPS holders. ************************** Please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 44Building Bridges: Diane Ravitch Battles For Public Education
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** Teach the Children Well: The Battle for Public Education featuring Diane Ravitch, one of the foremost authorities on education in the U.S., former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, âwhistle-blower extraordinaire,â author of the best-selling The Death and Life of the Great American School System, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools and other notable books on education history and policy â incisive, comprehensive looks at todayâs American public school system that argue against those who claim it is broken and beyond repair; an impassioned but reasoned call to stop the privatization movement that is draining students and funding from our public schools. Governor Cuomo manipulated the state budget, holding up its passage, until it included the hugely unpopular and anti-worker practice of pegging teachers tenure and evaluations to standardized tests grade results. While dropped from inclusion in the budget the Governors desire to see the proliferation of charter schools remains a mainstay on his educational agenda. These issues have been been heating up ever since Pres. Bushâs No Child Left Behind plan, but especially since the roll out of Race to The Top and the Common Core State Standards so Building Bridges decided to tackle these issues with with Diane Ravitch, who infuses research, about the recent history of education policy reform, the strategies used for fighting back against these policies, and who proposes solutions that work to create sustainable, equitable, anti-racist, democratic and meaningful public education. Our conversation with Diane Ravitch is for anyone interested in an âinsiderâs lookâ and leading a resistance or forming an organization towards reclaiming our public schools and reclaiming the public narrative around education policy. ************************ Please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 46Building Bridges: National Union Of Metalworkers: Fighting Political Corruption And Building A Socialist Movement In South Africa
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg *************************** National Union of Metalworkers: Fighting Political Corruption and Building a Socialist Movement in South Africa with Irvin Jim, General Secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the biggest single trade union in South Africa. He is a strong critic of the ruling African National Congress, which he accuses of failing to implement the 1955 Freedom Charter. The Metalworkers union sees much of the leadership of the ANC as supporting a "post-Apartheid neoliberal capitalist South Africa with South African and multinational corporations and the South African white political community" . Jim suggests that NUMSA is a union whose goal is the creation of a "Socialist Republic of South Africa" . The mission is to convince society that capitalism has failed and a new worker-centered economic dispensation is required. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is planning to form a political party to fight for the abolishment of capitalism The newly launched trade union grouping in South Africa â the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) â promises to be a voice for the growing numbers of unorganized and marginalized workers in the country. *************************** please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition. 47Building Bridges: Puerto Ricoâs Debt Crisis: Whoâs To Blame And What Can Be Done?
By Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** Puerto Ricoâs Debt Crisis: Whoâs To Blame And What Can Be Done? with . David Galarza, co-founder of SiemPReste, an organization committed to working in the diaspora around the political/civil/economic crisis of Puerto Rico . Michael Kink, Exec. Dir., Strong Economy for All Coalition and Member Hedge Clippers Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States with 3.5 million U.S. citizen residents who do not have the right to vote for President or representation in Congress-is making headlines these days because of its inability to pay a $72 billion debt owed to holders of its devalued bonds. While there have been comparisons between Greece and Puerto Rico the reality is that they are totally distinct situations. Greece has sovereignty, Puerto Rico does not. Puerto Rico is unable to declare bankruptcy, cannot devalue its currency and cannot go to international financial institutions under the present colonial system. In fact one of the solutions offered in the United States to solve the chaotic economic crisis is to place the entire island in receivership. In other words to go back to an even more rigid colonial system so that the bonds market can protect their investment. 49Building Bridges Radio:Right To Work And Wisconsin
By Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg
Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report National Edition Produced by Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg **************************** When Words Don't Mean What They Say: "Right to Work" Laws are Anything but That! featuring . Kevin Gundlach, Pres., South Central Labor Federation, Madison, WI . Elizabeth Tandy Shermer, Asst. Prof. of History, Loyola University, Co-author with Nelson Lichtenstein, The Right and Labor in America Wisconsin is the latest State to fall victim to the right wing anti-union juggernaut. "Right to work" laws destroy unions - that's their real purpose. "Right to work" legislation isn't driven by a groundswell of disgruntled union members chafing under union oppression, but by employers, industry associations and lobbyists. "Right to work" laws drive down wages for everyone. We'll explore the history of right to work laws, who and what's driving this juggernaut in states across the nation and what is to be done to challenge this race to the bottom. *****************************. please email Building Bridges if you are broadcasting our National Edition.
