1Identity-centrality, Perceived COVID-19 Threat, And Subgroup Autonomy

By

The following study will examine whether different domains of threat (symbolic, realistic) over the COVID-19 virus predict people's support for subgroup autonomy and if people's subgroup identity-centrality moderates these predictive effects. Some researchers have found that people perceive COVID-19 as both realistic and symbolic threats (Kachanoff et al., 2021). As well, perceiving a realistic threat over COVID is positively related to support of restrictive health policies, while perceiving a symbolic threat over COVID is negatively associated with support for restrictive health policies (Kachanoff et al., 2021). Perceiving a realistic (not symbolic) threat also predicts support for restrictive COVID lockdowns (Chen et al., 2022). These findings suggest that people are willing to relinquish their autonomy under a realistic threat. Because previous research suggests that support for subgroup autonomy is done to maintain a subgroup's values and identity (Wagoner et al., 2018), it can be speculated that realistic and symbolic threats over COVID-10 have differing impacts on people's desire for autonomy. Specifically, while a symbolic threat might drive people to desire autonomy to defend their values and identity, a realistic threat might motivate people to give up their autonomy to thwart the realistic threat to their safety and health.

4ERIC EJ967321: Fragile Identities: Exploring Learner Identity, Learner Autonomy And Motivation Through Young Learners' Voices

By

Recent research in the fields of motivation and learner autonomy in language learning has begun to explore their relationships to the construct of identity. This article builds on this through the voices of a group of six learners of French or German in a secondary school in England, over a two-year period. These young learners initially reveal a clear identity as learners responsible for and able to take control of their own learning. However, this identity is seen as fragile when teacher control is increased in response to the external pressure of examinations, and there are indications of loss of motivation. Secondary school teachers, therefore, need to ensure that the learning environment they create engages, nurtures, and protects their learners' identity as learners through sustained opportunities for autonomy. Further research is proposed into aspects of learner identity, as well as ways in which changing pedagogy involves changes in teacher identity.

10ERIC ED026943: Maintaining Institutional Identity And Autonomy In Coordinated Systems.

By

Institutional autonomy is a relative concept affected both by external constraints and by the attitudes and experience of those within the institution. The identity of an institution is the image established by the dynamics of its constituents and the freedom they exercise in establishing this identity determines its autonomy. In California, external constraints are produced by the interaction of the university system with the development of the Master Plan for Higher Education and the Coordinating Council for Higher Education. Accrediting agencies, professional societies, local, state and federal agencies account for other constraints. Sources of influence within the system are the regents, offices of presidents and vice presidents and university-wide committees. Within the institution, faculty, staff and student views shape the development and maintenance of institutional autonomy. The faculty tends to equate institutional autonomy with personal autonomy and the staff tends to view the university as a public trust requiring accountability to all it serves or is served by. Students, on the other hand, are vitally concerned about ends or results presumably provided by freedom of action. Students, faculty and staff not the administration, are the primary resources for achieving and preserving institutional identity and autonomy. An annotated bibliography is included. (JS)

13DTIC ADA380017: United States Global Security And The European Security And Defense Identity: A Case For European Military Autonomy

By

The Cold War is over, the threat posed by communism no longer exists, and the United States (US) continues to occupy the preemminent position worldwide. With the removal of Cold War restrictions and constrictions, the pursuit of globalization is the most significant driving force that will shape human endeavor for the foreseeable future. With globalization will come new security threats that will demand new and innovative solutions; old ideas and old strategies applied to new security problems just won't work. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the context of US-European security affairs. Since 1945, the US strategy in Europe, and through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), has been ensuring stability and prosperity in close proximity to the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Second only to national survival has been the reconstitution and security of Europe. In the year 2000, has the US obtained its Cold War goals regarding Europe? There is no longer any credible threat to the territorial integrity of Europe; the economy of the European Union (EU) alone is near equal to that of the US and democratization and self-determination are flourishing. Is it necessary for the US to maintain its current level of military involvement and focus for these conditions to continue?

1American Big-Game Hunting

By

Book's cover

The first book published by The Boone and Crockett Club founded by Theodore Roosevelt and George Grinnell, who declared in their Editors Note: "Hunting big game in the wilderness is, above all things, a sport for a vigorous and masterful people. The rifle-bearing hunter, whether he goes on foot or on horseback, whether he voyages in a canoe or travels with a dog-sled, must be sound of body and firm of mind, and must possess energy, resolution, manliness, self-reliance, and capacity for hardy self-help. In short, the big-game hunter must possess qualities without which no race can do its life-work well; and these are the very qualities which it is the purpose of this Club, so far as may be, to develop and foster."<br /><br /> A bit outdated as to the equipment they used, this book is nevertheless an intense look at the west in early days, and at the beginnings of the conservationist movement in America. Each chapter focuses on a different animal, from buffalo, mountain goat, elk, pronghorn sheep, grizzlies, etc., indigenous peoples, different areas like the Rockies and Yellowstone, and it still captures the essence of the spirit of the hunt.<br /><br /> The book ends with a list of the club's original 100 members, a veritable Who's Who of Generals, Colonels, Doctors, Senators and Representatives, amongst them that most illustrious Gen'l William T. Sherman. ( ~ Michele Fry, read by LibriVox Volunteers)

2Fundamentals Volume 1

By

The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth (generally referred to simply as The Fundamentals) is a set of ninety essays published between 1910 and 1915 by the Testimony Publishing Company of Chicago. According to its foreword, the publication was designed to be "a new statement of the fundamentals of Christianity." However, its contents reflect a concern with certain theological innovations related to liberal Christianity, especially biblical higher criticism. It is widely considered to be the foundation of modern Christian fundamentalism. The essays were written by sixty-four different authors, representing most of the major Protestant Christian denominations. It was mailed free of charge to ministers, missionaries, professors of theology, YMCA and YWCA secretaries, Sunday school superintendents, and other Protestant religious workers in the United States and other English-speaking countries. Over three million volumes (250,000 sets) were sent out.
