7DTIC AD1029412: Usability Study And Heuristic Evaluation Of The Applied Robotics For Installations And Base Operations (ARIBO) Driverless Vehicle Reservation Application ARIBO Mobile
By Defense Technical Information Center
This study addresses the usability of the Applied Robotics for Installations and Base Operations (ARIBO) Autonomous Warrior Transport On-base (AWTO) rider reservation and reminder system mobile application, called ARIBO Mobile. ARIBO is an on-demand transportation system that will allow Soldiers to reserve a vehicle for a specified time and at predefined pick-up and drop-off locations throughout the medical campus at Ft Bragg, North Carolina. The mobile application allows riders to request transport reservations, modify or view existing reservations, and receive reminders for upcoming reservations. A usability assessment was conducted with 7 subject matter experts to provide a heuristic evaluation of the application, feedback on the design of the application, and an objective assessment of the tool. Direct measurements including time to complete task, number of steps to complete task, errors, and requests for assistance were recorded. The usability assessment of ARIBO Mobile provides the designers with feedback that may be used to update or change the design prior to wide distribution to the Soldiers.

8DTIC ADA238312: Neural Networks And Robotics Applied To The Non-Destructive Inspection Of Aircraft
By Defense Technical Information Center
We are converting the in phase and quadrature measurements into an image and then using the image to classify fault or no fault eddy current. This has been done using old OCR features developed to recognize handwritten numerical characters which are applicable to this situation. The raw data was first smoothed out by taking the average of the nearest 10 measurements, then plotted on a 50 by 50 grid. The X axis is the in phase measurement normalized to accommodate the maximum and minimum in phase values in the data set. The same was done for quadrature values on the Y axis. An efficient path planning method for collision avoidance has been developed. Fast path planning is achieved by decomposing the 3-dimensional space into a number of 2-dimensional subspaces. A method is devised to work directly with arm postures (configurations) instead of dealing with individual joint angles. These two aspects, namely decomposition and posture control, greatly speed up the path finding procedure and make it possible to perform near real-time planning in a moderately cluttered environment. Meetings were held at McDonnell Douglas, McClelland AFB, and Physical Research Inc., manufacturers of Magneto-Optic Crack Detectors to assess the utility of our research and plans for prototyping during Phase II. Discussions have begun with United Technologies concerning the use of our research for a large Air Force NDI program. Prospects for Phase III follow-on look promising.

9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19890010511: A Methodology For Automation And Robotics Evaluation Applied To The Space Station Telerobotic Servicer
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The efforts of a recent study aimed at identifying key issues and trade-offs associated with using a Flight Telerobotic Servicer (FTS) to aid in Space Station assembly-phase tasks is described. The use of automation and robotic (A and R) technologies for large space systems would involve a substitution of automation capabilities for human extravehicular or intravehicular activities (EVA, IVA). A methodology is presented that incorporates assessment of candidate assembly-phase tasks, telerobotic performance capabilities, development costs, and effect of operational constraints (space transportation system (STS), attached payload, and proximity operations). Changes in the region of cost-effectiveness are examined under a variety of systems design assumptions. A discussion of issues is presented with focus on three roles the FTS might serve: (1) as a research-oriented testbed to learn more about space usage of telerobotics; (2) as a research based testbed having an experimental demonstration orientation with limited assembly and servicing applications; or (3) as an operational system to augment EVA and to aid the construction of the Space Station and to reduce the programmatic (schedule) risk by increasing the flexibility of mission operations.

12Low-cost Educational Robotics Applied To Physics Teaching In Brazil
By Marcos A. M. Souza and José R. R. Duarte
In this paper we propose strategies and methodologies of teaching topics in high school physics, through a show of Educational Robotics. The Exhibition was part of a set of actions promoted by a brazilian government program of incentive for teaching activities (PIBID) and whose primary focus is the training of teachers, improvement of teaching in public schools, dissemination of science and formation of new scientists and researchers. By means of workshops, banners and prototyping of robotics, we are able to create a connection between the study areas and their surrounding, making learning meaningful and accessible for the students involved and contributing to their cognitive development.

20DTIC AD1044446: Applied Robotics For Installations And Base Operations: User Perceptions Of A Driverless Vehicle At Fort Bragg
By Defense Technical Information Center
The US Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Centers Applied Robotics for Installations and Base Operations (ARIBO) program at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, provided one of the first US-based living laboratories that allowed Soldiers the opportunity to directly interact with a driverless, robotic transport vehicle. Passengers and potential future passengers from the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) and Womack Area Medical Center were given the opportunity to provide user feedback during Phase 1 (driver operated) and Phase 2 (safety operator) of development of the vehicle. A total of 26 people including safety operators, passengers, bystanders, and Soldiers from the WTB provided feedback related to trust and acceptability of the vehicle autonomy, as well as design recommendations for increasing future passenger and pedestrian comfort and trust in the driverless transport vehicle. Overall findings suggest that even minimal exposure to robotic systems can increase positive ratings of trustworthiness and acceptability of the future autonomous capabilities of a driverless transport vehicle. However, the vehicle could benefit from a number of design features and capabilities to better communicate its decision-making processes and intent to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

23ERIC EJ910910: The TangibleK Robotics Program: Applied Computational Thinking For Young Children
By ERIC
This article describes the TangibleK robotics program for young children. Based on over a decade of research, this program is grounded on the belief that teaching children about the human-made world, the realm of technology and engineering, is as important as teaching them about the natural world, numbers, and letters. The TangibleK program uses robotics as a tool to engage children in developing computational thinking and learning about the engineering design process. It includes a research-based, developmentally appropriate robotics kit that children can use to make robots and program their behaviors. The curriculum has been piloted in kindergarten classrooms and in summer camps and lab settings. The author presents the theoretical framework that informs TangibleK and the "powerful ideas" from computer science and robotics on which the curriculum is based, linking them to other disciplinary areas and developmental characteristics of early childhood. The article concludes with a description of classroom pedagogy and activities, along with assessment tools used to evaluate learning outcomes. (Contains 5 figures and 4 tables.)
