"THE DESIGN AND APPLICATION OF AN EVALUATION MODEL FOR NURSING CURRICULA (PROGRAM, CURRICULUM EVALUATION)." Description:

The Open Library:

This study was designed to develop and implement an eclectic evaluation model to insure quality programming within nursing education. It provided an important methodological tool for systematically identifying, collecting, and analyzing useful information for effective decision making. The plan combined six evaluative systems into a framework that maximized the planning, structuring, implementing, and modifying decisions within an existing program. The CIPP Evaluation Model of Stufflebeam and his associates provided the structure for effective decision making, and Stake's Responsive Model created the content framework. The objectives-oriented model of Tyler and his colleagues, the accreditation guidelines of the National League for Nursing, the theory-building concepts of Derdiarian, and the criteria for predicting nursing performance developed by the Ohio State University Research Foundation provided the content, standards, and direction for collecting and analyzing information relevant to nursing education. The validity of this eclectic approach was tested through its applicability to a nursing program within a private, liberal arts college. The model was able to process the decision-making information necessary for meeting present and future program needs, as well as provide an organized feedback system for evaluating any newly developed strategies for change. Faculty awareness of the value of quantitative and qualitative justification for change to replace intuitive decision making resulted. The plan created a framework for meeting the specific needs of nursing but could be adapted to meet the unique demands of any discipline.
