The learning package is designed to provide the marketing educator with a culminating activity for an instructional unit focusing on advertising layout principles and procedures. It is to be used in conjunction with 35mm slides of newspaper advertisements, which the student views and rates in comparison with the ratings of a panel of experts. A motivational device is employed in awarding the students "profile points" based upon their ratings. Each of the 10 case studies includes background information, advertising copy, and copy rating profile. A checklist of advertising layout principles and layout rating sheet are also included. A study of Alabama students in grades 4 and 8 attempted to unearth the truth about the widely held assumption that the more money spent on a school the higher the student achievement will be. The study only examined funds that are spent directly on students, not on teacher salaries. The measurement of student achievement was done through the Stanford Achievement Test. School system averages were taken from 128 schools. Results of the study show a relationship between school funding and student achievement, but the relationship is not a simple linear one, but rather an ogive-shaped curve. Thus, as the ogive-shaped curve illustrates, until funding is increased to a high level, the increases will have relatively little impact on student achievement. Additionally, when the amount of money spent on teaching higher order skills is increased, the relationship between school funding and student achievement will become closer. (KDP)

On October 14, 2019 Bonny Thomas, 54, as shot by an Athens police officer, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said in a news release Tuesday. She died later at an area hospital. Officer Lamar Glenn shot Thomas after she allegedly raised a large knife at him and refused to put it down, according to Athens police. Thomas was taken to a hospital, where she died. No officers were injured during the incident. Glenn has been employed by the police department for 29 years, officials said. He was placed on administrative leave with pay while the incident is being investigated. How Close is too close? Salt Lake City police officer Dennis Tueller developed what is known as the “Tueller Drill.” The drill is a test is when is an assailant armed with a knife (or club, axe, etc.) too close to comprehend the threat, then fire your handgun to stop the treat. A good, experienced shooter takes 1.5 seconds to comprehend a threat, then draw and fire his handgun. A normal knife wielding assailant can run 21 feet and strike you in 1.5 seconds. You see, there isn’t much room for error. Of course, some assailants hesitate when a verbal challenge is issued and some armed individuals already have their handgun out. However, most states require the threat to the citizen or officer to be an “imminent threat” of death or serious physical injury. Is a threat that you will be stabbed (which is “serious physical” if not death) in 1.5 seconds “imminent”? How about 2.5 seconds? Is that still imminent? How about 3.5 seconds? See the problem? This officer appears to have been put in imminent threat of death or serious physical injury due to Ms. Thomas' proximity and her movement towards him. This article examines the use of an engineering design rubric by judges for three different student competitions--one regional, one national, and one global--to evaluate portfolios posted on the Innovation Portal, a free online resource available to students, teachers, and others engaged in STEM education across instructional levels. Judges responded to an online survey on the Engineering Design Process Portfolio Scoring Rubric (EDPPSR) following each competition. From close examination of survey responses and analysis of judges' independently assigned scores for various elements (or score categories) under which e-portfolio contents were organized, the author determines that a complex rubric can be used to evaluate competition entries both efficiently and with moderate consistency--even without more than cursory training--by those lacking familiarity with that scoring tool from an instructional context. The author identifies rewards in using rubrics like the EDPPSR for more than teaching and testing and presents some considerations regarding rubrics--not only engineering design rubrics but those intended to evaluate other processes and products common to STEM disciplines.

From Synagogue to Courtroom A synagogue turned into a courtroom at the You Be the Judge program at Congregation Beth Shalom. About 30 people took part in the interactive workshop hosted by the National Council of Jewish Women. “We were able to energize a bunch of people from our community to come out and to educate themselves about how judicial nominations affect every aspect of our lives,” said Jill Lexier, state policy advocate at the National Council of Jewish Women. The event began with an overview of how federal courts work, then attendees broke out into groups to review real court cases. “So much now is happening in the court system, a variety of topics are coming up that are of interest to me personally or of interest to people that I care about,” said attendee Cheryl Marshall. “So I just want to know where people are coming from, how things are presented in courts, how appeals are handled, etc.” The Cases One case was about whether voters should be required to present a photo ID. The other questioned if saying a prayer before a public meeting is appropriate, a timely topic as the DuPage County Board recently voted on that same issue, deciding to allow it. Each group came up with a verdict and presented their decisions. Then legal experts explained what the supreme and appeals court voted. Naperville News 17's Aysha Ashley Househ reports.

This 1940s promotional film produced by J.I. Case explains construction and performance characteristics of tractors and advertises the new VA Series Case tractor. Scenes show Case VA series tractors with hydraulic control and Eagle hitch. The color film begins with a scene of a male and female farmhand caring for several brown-and-white spotted cows in a field (0:48), as a voiceover explains how, similarly to heifers, tractors can also be judged based on different characteristics. A red Case VA Series tractor is shown while the two farmhands stand in front of it (1:20), followed by a closeup of a red and white Case sign with bald eagle logo (1:30). J.I. Case was an agricultural machinery and construction company founded in 1842 in Wisconsin, and was one of the U.S.’s largest producers of tractors and U.S. military equipment. Case introduced the VA Series tractor in 1942. Internal parts and machinery of a Case VA tractor are shown (2:02). Scenes of a man riding the tractor in a field using various plowing equipment, including a moldboard plow, disc plow, spike tooth harrow, drag harrow, disc harrow, and roller packing, are shown (2:39). The VA series tractor is shown hauling manure, hauling brush, wind rolling grain, and pulling and driving a combine. Also manufactured was the VAC model, which was a tricycle row-crop variant, and an industrial model called the VAI. Other variants included the VAO orchard model, the VAIW warehouse model, the VAH high-clearance row-crop model and finally, the VAS was the offset high-clearance row-crop model. Electric starters were optional on all these units. The VAs were produced from 1942 to 1955, with the early models powered by Continental engines. The VAs were the first Case tractors to use the Eagle Hitch, introduced in 1949. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. This 1940s promotional film produced by J.I. Case explains construction and performance characteristics of tractors and advertises the new VA Series Case tractor. Also manufactured was the VAC model, which was a tricycle row-crop variant, and an industrial model called the VAI. Other variants included the VAO orchard model, the VAIW warehouse model, the VAH high-clearance row-crop model and finally, the VAS was the offset high-clearance row-crop model. Electric starters were optional on all these units. The VAs were produced from 1942 to 1955, with the early models powered by Continental engines. The VAs were the first Case tractors to use the Eagle Hitch, introduced in 1949. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
