3How Significant Is The Distinction Between Aggregate (national) And Individual Perception Of Economic Inequality In Understanding Their Impact On Political Trust?

By

A previous second-order analysis was conducted on a survey of 6,112 undergraduate students from 28 different countries using multilevel analysis. The goal of these analyses was to assess the effect of perceived inequality on political trust. The analyses revealed that perception of economic inequality influence political trust both at the aggregate (national) level and at the individual level. Additionally, the results demonstrated an interaction effect between the aggregate and individual levels on political trust. However, since these analyses were based on data collected from students, they offer limited external validity and reliability. The aim of this pre-registration is therefore to replicate this type of analysis using data from the European Social Survey, a European survey conducted on nationally representative samples of the population.

8Understanding Experiences Of Inequality In Public Acute Healthcare Among Members Of Marginalised Communities: A Qualitative Study

By

This study is part of a larger research project which aims to make the National Inpatient Experience Survey more accessible and inclusive for marginalised communities in Ireland. The survey is managed and delivered by the Health Information and Quality Authority’s National Care Experience Programme. The survey may need to be adapted to include patients from different communities and circumstances that may affect their experience of hospital care. To learn how to make the survey more accessible and inclusive, we will carry out qualitative research with people from marginalised communities about their experience of being an inpatient in public acute hospitals in Ireland. We will collaborate with community organisations who work with people from marginalised communities to engage these groups in this research. We will ask participants questions about different aspects of their hospital care experience, to better understand how marginalised people experience this care. The findings will be used to inform a planned future project to co-develop changes to the National Inpatient Experience Survey to make it more accessible and inclusive for marginalised communities in Ireland.

9A Study Of Difference In Understanding Of Gender Inequality

By

This research paper explores the multifaceted nature of gender inequality and the various perspectives surrounding it. It delves into the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to gender disparities, examining how societal norms and stereotypes perpetuate inequality. The paper also highlights the importance of intersectionality, recognizing how gender inequality intersects with other forms of discrimination. Additionally, it explores the impact of gender inequality on individuals and society as a whole. By shedding light on these different understandings, this research paper aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and efforts towards achieving gender equality. This research paper takes a deep dive into the diverse perspectives and interpretations of gender inequality. It examines the social, economic, and political aspects that contribute to this issue. The paper also explores how societal norms and stereotypes play a role in perpetuating gender disparities. By considering intersectionality, it acknowledges the interconnectedness of gender inequality with other forms of discrimination. Furthermore, the research paper investigates the impact of gender inequality on individuals and society as a whole. Through this comprehensive exploration, the aim is to foster a greater understanding and promote meaningful progress towards gender equality. Gender inequality refers to the unequal treatment and opportunities based on gender. It can manifest in various ways, such as unequal pay, limited access to education, and underrepresentation in leadership roles. Societal norms and stereotypes often contribute to these disparities. Research has shown that addressing gender inequality requires a multi faceted approach, including promoting gender equality in laws and policies, challenging gender stereotypes, and empowering individuals to challenge and dismantle gender based discrimination. 14Understanding Age-Related Differences Between Socioeconomic Deprivation, Income Inequality, Social Support And Financial/Health And Safety Risk-Taking Behaviors

By

Understanding the mechanisms that contribute to risk-taking behaviors in different domains is crucial for preventing poor decision-making and supporting those most susceptible to such decisions. This project aims to understand how relationships between age, socioeconomic deprivation, social support, and income inequality affect different types of risk behaviors. Previous literature suggests that as people age, they tend to engage in less risky behaviors involving health/safety and financial domains (Rolison et al., 2014). Additionally, previous work indicates that lower socioeconomic standing is also associated with risk aversion in adults, though other studies show the opposite trend in adolescents (Weissberger et al., 2022; Xiaoshan et al., 2021). Another topic that has been recently studied is the effect of income inequality on risk-taking, which show that income inequality increases risk taking partially through social comparisons (Payne et al., 2017). It is evident that risk-taking behaviors change over the lifespan, however this project aims to understand if income inequality and socioeconomic deprivation influence this trajectory.

15ERIC ED505044: Understanding Earnings Inequality In Appalachia: Skill Upgrading Versus Rising Returns To Skill

By

The Appalachian region is one of the most persistently poor areas of the United States. A focal explanation for the weak economic performance over the years is the fact that Appalachia has long lagged behind other regions in terms of the supply of skilled workers, particularly those with higher levels of education attainment, and this lack of skill has perpetuated poverty in the region. In recent decades, however, residents of Appalachia have begun to narrow the gap in education attainment. To what extent this relative skill upgrading in Appalachia has translated into higher wages and reduced wage inequality across regions of the country depends on changes in the relative returns to skill. Knowledge of how regional differences in skill levels and returns to skill translate into regional differentials in economic inequality and development is needed for a better understanding of widening inequality. This report uses data from the 1980-2000 Integrated Public Use Microdata Samples (IPUMS) of the Decennial Census to decompose changes in the wage levels and distributions of men and women within and outside Appalachia over the past two decades. Evidence indicates that while still lagging behind the United States as a whole, the Appalachian region has shown some social and economic convergence toward the United States during the last decade. The convergence appears to be primarily in the direction of decreased income inequality and high school graduation rates. Income growth in Appalachia has generally kept pace with the United States, but average income levels are still below those of the rest of the nation. (Contains 1 footnote, 13 figures and 15 tables.)

17Children’s Understanding Of Economic Inequality

By

A plethora of reports by governmental agencies, think tanks, international organizations, and newspapers chart the development and stubborn persistence of income inequality in the UK. Epidemiological research has shown that societies with greater income inequality score lower than more equal societies in common public health indicators (e.g., morbidity, infant mortality; Wilkinson & Pickett, 2006), but also well-being and mental health (Pickett & Wilkinson, 2015). Thus, income inequality has adverse effects for individuals and societies at large. The purpose of this seminar series is to understand how children reason about inequalities at societal and interpersonal levels and how inequality affects them at a personal level. Looking at the developmental origins of the understanding of inequality may help us to combat acceptance of large differences in income inequality. Some research has explored children’s acceptance of inequality at a societal level and in interpersonal interactions. At an explicit level, seminal work found that children do not support income inequalities based on occupation until they are over 8 years of age (Emler & Dickinson, 1985). More recent research also suggests that 8-year-old children are less likely to support school segregation based on income than are 14-year-old children (Tenenbaum, Leman, Aznar, Duthie, & Killen, 2018). Thus, acceptance of income inequality seems to increase throughout middle childhood and adolescence. Given when these data were conducted on children’s understanding of income inequality, this project will examine whether children continue to support income inequality. We are particularly interested if opinions about key worker positions have changed after the lockdown. In the original study (Emler & Dickinson, 1985), children were asked about bus drivers, teachers, road sweepers, and doctors. They argued that doctors should be paid more because they have more education. In the present study, we will ask about the following occupations: Our full collection will be doctor, engineer, teacher, bank manager, bus driver, rubbish All the necessary information is included in the uploaded OSF word doc.

18Understanding Educational Inequality In Hong Kong: Secondary School Segregation In Changing Institutional Contexts

By

Abstract:  Since the mid-1990s, important education policy changes, such as the growth of Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools and the reform of the medium of instruction (MOI) policy, have been made in Hong Kong. Little is known about their impact on school segregation and educational inequality. We address this issue using six successive cycles of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study data. We found evidence for rising levels of secondary school segregation in terms of family socio-economic status and mathematics achievement from 1995 to 2011, whereas segregation declined from 2011 to 2015. We speculate that the salience of the MOI policy in expediting the segregating tendencies of the DSS sector might explain a growing magnitude of the effect of family socio-economic status on academic achievement between 1995 and 2011, and the reversed direction of such trends between 2011 and 2015. Implications are discussed.

19Understanding Inequality And Poverty In China : Methods And Applications
