A former Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Walker is currently a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and the founder & director of the Center for Human Sleep Science. Dr. Walker's research examines the impact of sleep on human health and disease. In addition, Dr. Walker helped create the recent National Geographic documentary, Sleepless in America, and the PBS NOVA special, Memory Hackers. Most recently, he contributed to the BBC Horizon documentary, Curing Alzheimer's. His numerous presentations include radio features on the BBC and NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, City Arts & Lectures, Hidden Brain, Science Friday, and Forum: NPR. In this week's episode, Dr. Walker discusses the importance and impact of sleep. Knowledge, its creation, development, dispersion and institutionalisation in organisations is a complex topic and one that attracts much attention in both academic and management literatures (Choo & Bontis, 2002; Davenport & De Long, 1998; Davenport & Prusak, 1998; Spender, 1996). The relationship between knowledge and organisational performance is often drawn and particular reference is made to the importance of knowledge in contexts of ubiquitous and increasingly fastpaced change (Prusak, 2001). University governance is not immune to the impacts of this environmental flux; indeed, the ability of higher education institutions to adapt to their contexts is cited as critical to their continuing relevance and effectiveness in contemporary settings (Teodorescu, 2006). Understanding the nature and role of knowledge in this relationship is a central concern in the current global interest in governance. This article explores the roles of the Academic Board and the University Council as sites of knowledge production in uncertain times. Based on earlier work on constructions of knowledge in these forums (Blackman, Kennedy, Richardson, & Swansson, 2006) and focused on information and knowledge flows within and between the two entities, this article discusses opportunities for improving the university's performance through a shift in focus in its governing bodies. While we do not claim that the issues that limit knowledge creation in the university are simple ones, we do suggest that the introduction of notions of creativity and imagination to the discussion of university governance would highlight opportunities for organisational improvement.

The vehicles incur a penalty proportional to the duration of their total service time in excess of a preset constant. The vehicles differ in their motion constraints and are located at distinct depots at the start of the mission. The vehicles may also be equipped with disparate sensors. The objective is to find a tour for each vehicle that starts and ends at its respective depot such that every target is visited and serviced by some vehicle while minimizing the sum of the total travel distance and the expected penalty incurred by all the vehicles. We formulate the problem as a two-stage stochastic program with recourse, present the theoretical properties of the formulation and advantages of using such a formulation, as opposed to a deterministic expected value formulation, to solve the problem. Extensive numerical simulations also corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Sue address that we are currently under spiritual attack but the good news is that God is in control. Handing over the things that are out of our control over to God shows our confidence in him and our faith, remember that God’s timing is perfect.

The European Union (EU) has a hugely important effect on the way in which environmental policies are framed, designed and implemented in many parts of the world, but especially Europe. The new edition of this leading textbook provides a state-of-the-art analysis of the EU’s environmental policies. This collection of essays arose from a conference held to mark the silver anniversary of the Australian Sex Discrimination Act (1984). The collection has two aims: first; to honour the contributions of both the spirited individuals who valiantly fought for the enactment of the legislation against the odds, and those who championed the new law once it was passed; secondly, to present a stock-take of the Act within the changed socio-political environment of the 21st century. The contributors present clear-eyed appraisals of the legislation, in addition to considering new forms of legal regulation, such as Equality Act, and the significance of a Human Rights Act. The introduction of a proactive model, which would impose positive duties on organisations, is explored as an alternative to the existing individual complaint-based model of legislation. The contributors also pay attention to the international human rights framework, particularly the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. The essays are illuminated by recourse to a rich vein of historical and contemporary literature. Regard is also paid to the comparative experience of other jurisdictions, particularly the UK and Canada.

As a maritime trading state highly dependent upon secure sea lines of communication stretching from the Middle East to North America, Australia is tied comprehensively and profitably to Asia's economic success. Yet Australia must also suffer the less positive implications of such dynamism, including growing strategic competition among the region's major powers, an increasing competition for resources, active Islamist terrorist threats, unpredictable and unsatisfied states in combination with the related danger of weapons of mass destruction and missile proliferation, and the consequences of failing or troubled states unable to cope with political, economic, environmental, or demographic stresses. The impact of such factors has been especially evident for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), which over the past decade has been operating at a constantly high tempo in response to strategic crises, disintegrating societies, or grave natural disasters - from East Timor to the Persian Gulf and the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sumatra, and Pakistan. Indeed, there have been many other, lesser ADF deployments over that time as well, along with the added importance of border security in the post-9/11 world.
