Using broadband optical imaging and Chandra X-ray data for a sample of 46 cluster central dominant galaxies (CDGs), we investigate the connection between star formation, the intracluster medium (ICM), and the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We report the discovery of a remarkably sharp threshold for the onset of star formation that occurs when the central cooling time of the hot atmosphere falls below ~ 5x10^8 yr, or equivalently when the central entropy falls below ~ 30 keV cm^2. In addition to this criterion, star formation in cooling flows also appears to require that the X-ray and galaxy centroids lie within ~ 20 kpc of each other, and that the jet (cavity) power is smaller than the X-ray cooling luminosity. These three criteria, together with the high ratio of cooling time to AGN outburst (cavity) age across our sample, directly link the presence of star formation and AGN activity in CDGs to cooling instabilities in the intracluster plasma. Our results provide compelling evidence that AGN feedback into the hot ICM is largely responsible for regulating cooling and star formation in the cores of clusters, leading to the significant growth of supermassive black holes in CDGs at late times.

As it is well known most of charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) exhibit the nonlinear transport with well defined threshold electric field E_T. Here we study theoretically the threshold electric field of unconventional density waves. We find that the threshold field increases monotonically with temperature without divergent behaviour at T_c, unlike the one in conventional CDW. The present result in the 3D weak pinning limit appears to describe rather well the threshold electric field observed recently in the low-temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4.

The surface code is one the most promising alternatives for implementing fault-tolerant, large-scale quantum information processing. Its high threshold for single-qubit errors under stochastic noise is one of its most attrative features. We develop an exact formulation for the fidelity of the surface code that allows us to probe much further on this promise of strong protection. This formulation goes beyond the stochastic single-qubit error model approximation and can take into account both correlated errors and inhomogeneities in the coupling between physical qubits and the environment. For the case of a bit-flipping environment, we map the complete evolution after one quantum error correction cycle onto the problem of computing correlation functions of a two-dimensional Ising model with boundary fields. Exact results for the fidelity threshold of the surface code are then obtained for several relevant types of noise. Analytical predictions for a representative case are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations.

A classic theorem of Dirac from 1952 states that every graph with minimum degree at least n/2 contains a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1963, P\'osa conjectured that every graph with minimum degree at least 2n/3 contains the square of a Hamiltonian cycle. In 1960, Ore relaxed the degree condition in the Dirac's theorem by proving that every graph with $deg(u) + deg(v) \geq n$ for every $uv \notin E(G)$ contains a Hamiltonian cycle. Recently, Ch\^au proved an Ore-type version of P\'osa's conjecture for graphs on $n\geq n_0$ vertices using the regularity--blow-up method; consequently the $n_0$ is very large (involving a tower function). Here we present another proof that avoids the use of the regularity lemma. Aside from the fact that our proof holds for much smaller $n_0$, we believe that our method of proof will be of independent interest.

We present a novel tree representation for the hard-core lattice gas model (weighted independent sets) on a general graph. We use this representation to show that for any graph of maximum degree D, the Gibbs measure is unique (the influence of any boundary condition decays with distance) provided that the activity parameter λ < λ c , where λ c is the critical activity for the regular tree of degree D. This resolves an open conjecture in statistical physics. Also, since λ c is known, this extends the known uniqueness regime for many interesting graphs, including the square integer lattice Z 2 . Our proof is algorithmic in nature, consisting of an elegant recursive procedure for calculating the probabilities that a given vertex is occupied. This procedure yields an efficient deterministic approximation scheme for counting independent sets of any graph of maximum degree D in the above regime of λ. This extends the regime of λ for which an efficient approximation scheme is known to exist, and includes the interesting case of λ=1 (all independent sets are equally weighted) and maximum degree D=5. ©2006 Microsoft Corporation. During the first hearing on September 20th, the Department of Development presented data on the pay scales of jobs presently in the City’s incentive portfolio, national market wage data, and a policy recommendation to increase the wage to an amount between $18.50 and $20 per hour. This hearing we will be hearing presentations from several invited community stakeholders to get their reactions to the first hearing and their thoughts on how we should move forward given the recommendation.

Results are reported from a joint analysis of Phase I and Phase II data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. The effective electron kinetic energy threshold used is T_eff=3.5 MeV, the lowest analysis threshold yet achieved with water Cherenkov detector data. In units of 10^6 cm^{-2} s^{-1}, the total flux of active-flavor neutrinos from 8B decay in the Sun measured using the neutral current (NC) reaction of neutrinos on deuterons, with no constraint on the 8B neutrino energy spectrum, is found to be Phi_NC = 5.140 ^{+0.160}_{-0.158} (stat) ^{+0.132}_{-0.117} (syst). These uncertainties are more than a factor of two smaller than previously published results. Also presented are the spectra of recoil electrons from the charged current reaction of neutrinos on deuterons and the elastic scattering of electrons. A fit to the SNO data in which the free parameters directly describe the total 8B neutrino flux and the energy-dependent nu_e survival probability provides a measure of the total 8B neutrino flux Phi_8B = 5.046 ^{+0.159}_{-0.152} (stat) ^{+0.107}_{-0.123} (syst). Combining these new results with results of all other solar experiments and the KamLAND reactor experiment yields best-fit values of the mixing parameters of theta_{12}=34.06 ^{+1.16}_{-0.84} degrees and Delta m^2_{21}=7.59 ^{+0.20}_{-0.21} x 10^{-5} eV^2. The global value of Phi_8B is extracted to a precision of ^{+2.38}_{-2.95} %. In a three-flavor analysis the best fit value of sin^2\theta_{13} is 2.00 ^{+2.09}_{-1.63} x 10^{-2}. Interpreting this as a limit implies an upper bound of sin^2\theta_{13} < 0.057 (95% C. L.).

We prove two main results on how arbitrary linear threshold functions $f(x) = \sign(w\cdot x - \theta)$ over the $n$-dimensional Boolean hypercube can be approximated by simple threshold functions. Our first result shows that every $n$-variable threshold function $f$ is $\eps$-close to a threshold function depending only on $\Inf(f)^2 \cdot \poly(1/\eps)$ many variables, where $\Inf(f)$ denotes the total influence or average sensitivity of $f.$ This is an exponential sharpening of Friedgut's well-known theorem \cite{Friedgut:98}, which states that every Boolean function $f$ is $\eps$-close to a function depending only on $2^{O(\Inf(f)/\eps)}$ many variables, for the case of threshold functions. We complement this upper bound by showing that $\Omega(\Inf(f)^2 + 1/\epsilon^2)$ many variables are required for $\epsilon$-approximating threshold functions. Our second result is a proof that every $n$-variable threshold function is $\eps$-close to a threshold function with integer weights at most $\poly(n) \cdot 2^{\tilde{O}(1/\eps^{2/3})}.$ This is a significant improvement, in the dependence on the error parameter $\eps$, on an earlier result of \cite{Servedio:07cc} which gave a $\poly(n) \cdot 2^{\tilde{O}(1/\eps^{2})}$ bound. Our improvement is obtained via a new proof technique that uses strong anti-concentration bounds from probability theory. The new technique also gives a simple and modular proof of the original \cite{Servedio:07cc} result, and extends to give low-weight approximators for threshold functions under a range of probability distributions beyond just the uniform distribution.

It is shown that the dominant decay mode of $\vec\omega \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0$ can be employed to determine the Fano statistical tensor $t^2_0$ of $\vec \omega$ with respect to the quantization axis normal to the decay plane. In $pp \to pp \vec \omega$ one can choose decay planes with different orientations for a given $\omega$ direction, $\theta$. By choosing three different experimentally convenient orientations of the decay planes for the same $\theta$, one may determine empirically the $t^2_0$ and $t^2_{\pm 2}$ characterising the tensor polarization of $\omega$ in the Transverse Frame for $pp \to pp \vec \omega$.

Diurnal changes in solar radiation on Mars set up a cycle of cooling and heating of the planetary boundary layer, this effect strongly influences the wind field. The stratification of the air layer is stable in early morning since the ground is cooler than the air above it. When the ground is heated and becomes warmer than the air its heat is transferred to the air above it. The heated parcels of air near the surface will, in effect, increase the near surface wind speed or increase the aeolian surface stress the wind has upon the surface when compared to an unheated or cooled surface. This means that for the same wind speed at a fixed height above the surface, ground-level shear stress will be greater for the heated surface than an unheated surface. Thus, it is possible to obtain saltation threshold conditions at lower mean wind speeds when the surface is heated. Even though the mean wind speed is less when the surface is heated, the surface shear stress required to initiate particle movement remains the same in both cases. To investigate this phenomenon, low-density surface dust aeolian threshold measurements have been made in the MARSWIT wind tunnel located at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California. The first series of tests examined threshold values of the 100 micron sand material. At 13 mb surface pressure the unheated surface had a threshold friction speed of 2.93 m/s (and approximately corresponded to a velocity of 41.4 m/s at a height of 1 meter) while the heated surface equivalent bulk Richardson number of -0.02, yielded a threshold friction speed of 2.67 m/s (and approximately corresponded to a velocity of 38.0 m/s at a height of 1 meter). This change represents an 8.8 percent decrease in threshold conditions for the heated case. The values of velocities are well within the threshold range as observed by Arvidson et al., 1983. As the surface was heated the threshold decreased. At a value of bulk Richardson number equal to -0.02 the threshold friction speed and threshold wind speed appears to level-off to a constant value. This trend also was observed in the MARSWIT experiments involving the 11 micron sized-silt material.

In the problem of influence maximization in information networks, the objective is to choose a set of initially active nodes subject to some budget constraints such that the expected number of active nodes over time is maximized. The linear threshold model has been introduced to study the opinion cascading behavior, for instance, the spread of products and innovations. In this paper, we we extends the classic linear threshold model [18] to capture the non-progressive be- havior. The information maximization problem under our model is proved to be NP-Hard, even for the case when the underlying network has no directed cycles. The first result of this paper is negative. In general, the objective function of the extended linear threshold model is no longer submodular, and hence the hill climbing approach that is commonly used in the existing studies is not applicable. Next, as the main result of this paper, we prove that if the underlying information network is directed acyclic, the objective function is submodular (and monotone). Therefore, in directed acyclic networks with a specified budget we can achieve 1/2 -approximation on maximizing the number of active nodes over a certain period of time by a deterministic algorithm, and achieve the (1 - 1/e )-approximation by a randomized algorithm.

The data collected by the LHC collaborations at an energy of 13 TeV indicates the presence of an excess in the diphoton spectrum that would correspond to a resonance of a 750 GeV mass. The apparently large production cross section is nevertheless very difficult to explain in minimal models. We consider the possibility that the resonance is a pseudoscalar boson $A$ with a two--photon decay mediated by a charged and uncolored fermion having a mass at the $\frac12 M_A$ threshold and a very small decay width, $\ll 1$ MeV; one can then generate a large enhancement of the $A\gamma\gamma$ amplitude which explains the excess without invoking a large multiplicity of particles propagating in the loop, large electric charges and/or very strong Yukawa couplings. The implications of such a threshold enhancement are discussed in two explicit scenarios: i) the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in which the $A$ state is produced via the top quark mediated gluon fusion process and decays into photons predominantly through loops of charginos with masses close to $\frac12 M_A$ and ii) a two Higgs doublet model in which $A$ is again produced by gluon fusion but decays into photons through loops of vector--like charged heavy leptons. We also comment on a minimal scenario in which the $A$ state couples only to photons through a heavy lepton loop and is both produced and decays through this coupling. In all these scenarios, while the mass of the charged fermion has to be adjusted to be extremely close to half of the $A$ resonance mass, the small total widths are naturally obtained if only suppressed three-body decay channels occur. Finally, the implications of some of these scenarios for dark matter are discussed.

The class of critical bootstrap percolation models in two dimensions was recently introduced by Bollob\'as, Smith and Uzzell, and the critical threshold for percolation was determined up to a constant factor for all such models by the authors of this paper. Here we develop and refine the techniques introduced in that paper in order to determine a sharp threshold for the Duarte model. This resolves a question of Mountford from 1995, and is the first result of its type for a model with drift.

Matching Non-Perturbative Renormalisation on the lattice and perturbative renormalisation would benefit from higher matching scales, which are needed for observables entering their permile era such as BK. In this work we lay down a strategy, within the Rome-Southampton framework, to push this scale higher across the charm threshold, and apply it to an exploration of the BK running from 3 GeV to 9 GeV. This is done on Nf = 2+1+1 ensembles generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration, and features a close study of the discretisation effects.

We use the high-order nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation (NLSE) derived to model the evolution of slowly modulated wave trains with narrow spectrum on the surface of ideal finite-depth fluid. This equation is the finite-depth counterpart of celebrated Dysthe's equation, which is usually used for the same purpose in the case of infinite depth. We demonstrate that this generalized equation admits bright soliton solutions for depths below the modulation instability threshold $kh\approx 1.363$ ($k$ being the carrier wave number and $h$ the undisturbed fluid depth), which is not possible in the case of standard NLSE. These bright solitons can exist along with the dark solitons that have recently been observed in a water wave tank [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 124101 (2013)].

We calculate the threshold singularities in one-dimensional models using the universal low-energy formfactors obtained in the framework of the non-linear Luttinger liquid model. We find the reason why the simplified picture of the impurity moving in the Luttinger liquid leads to the correct results. We analyze the contribution of the quiver kinetic energy acquired by an electron in an oscillating electric field to the energy balance in atomic ionization processes by a short laser pulse. Due to the time dependence of this additional kinetic energy, a temporal average is assumed to maintain a stationary energy conservation rule. This rule is used to predict the position of the peaks observed in the photo electron spectra (PE). For a flat top pulse envelope, the mean value of the quiver energy over the whole pulse leads to the concept of ponderomotive energy $U_{p}$. However for a short pulse with a fast changing field intensity a stationarity approximation could not be precise. We check these concepts by studying first the photoelectron (PE) spectrum within the Semiclassical Model (SCM) for a multiple steps pulses. The SCM offers the possibility to establish a connection between emission times and the PE spectrum in the energy domain. We show that PE substructures stem from ionization at different times mapping the pulse envelope. We also present the analysis of the PE spectrum for a realistic sine-squared envelope within the Coulomb-Volkov and \textit{ab initio} calculations solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. We found that the electron emission amplitudes produced at different times interfere with each other and produce a new additional pattern, that overlap the above-threshold ionization (ATI) peaks.

Mock threshold graphs are a simple generalization of threshold graphs that, like threshold graphs, are perfect graphs. Our main theorem is a characterization of mock threshold graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Other theorems characterize mock threshold graphs that are claw-free and that are line graphs. We also discuss relations with chordality and well-quasi-ordering as well as algorithmic aspects.

The luminosity range at and just below the 10^39 erg/s cut-off for defining ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) is a little-explored regime. It none-the-less hosts a large number of X-ray sources, and has great potential for improving our understanding of sources with ~Eddington accretion rates. We select a sample of four sources in this Eddington Threshold regime with good data for further study; these objects possess a variety of soft spectral shapes. We perform X-ray spectral and timing analysis on the XMM-Newton and Chandra data for these objects to gain insight into their accretion mechanisms, and also examine their optical counterparts using HST images. NGC 300 X-1 is a highly luminous and well-known example of the canonical steep power-law accretion state. M51 ULS exhibits a cool blackbody-like spectrum and is consistent with being an ultraluminous supersoft source (ULS), possibly a super-Eddington accreting object viewed at a high inclination through an optically thick outflowing wind. NGC 4395 ULX-1 and NGC 6946 ULX-1 have unusually steep power-law tails, for which we discuss a variety of possible physical mechanisms and links to similar features in Galactic microquasars, and we conclude that these sources are likely intermediate objects between the soft ultraluminous regime of ULXs and classic ULSs.

We present the first predictions for sub-threshold open charm and charmonium production in nuclear collisions. The production mechanism is driven by multi-step scatterings of nucleons and their resonance states, accumulating sufficient energy for the production of $J/\Psi$, $\Lambda_c + \overline{D}$ and $D+\overline{D}$. Our results are of particular importance for the CBM experiment at FAIR, as they indicate that already at the SIS100 accelerator one can expect a significant number of charmed hadrons to be produced. This opens new possibilities to explore charm dynamics and the formation of charmed nuclei.

We present new analytic and numerical results for self-gravitating SU(2)-Higgs magnetic monopoles approaching the black hole threshold. Our investigation extends to large Higgs self-coupling, lambda, a regime heretofore unexplored. When lambda is small, the critical solution where a horizon first appears is extremal Reissner-Nordstrom outside the horizon but has a nonsingular interior. When lambda is large, the critical solution is an extremal black hole with non-Abelian hair and a mass less than the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom value. The transition between these two regimes is reminiscent of a first-order phase transition. We analyze in detail the approach to these critical solutions as the Higgs expectation value is varied, and compare this analysis with the numerical results.

For the formation of a black hole in the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field, we calculate a critical exponent that governs the black hole angular momentum for slightly non-spherical initial data near the black hole threshold. We calculate the scaling law by second-order perturbation theory. We then use the numerical results of a previous first-order perturbative analysis to obtain the numerical value mu ~ 0.76 for the angular momentum critical exponent. A quasi-periodic fine structure is superimposed on the overall power law.

In a classification rule for deciding between two possible classes, generally a single threshold test is used. If, however, one or both of the class probability density functions for the decision variable is multimodal or if the class variances are unequal, the situation may arise where it becomes desirable to use multiple thresholds to bracket several regions of the decision variable assigned to the two classes. An easy count of the number of inflection points in the operating characteristic curve generated from the single threshold case permits determination of the maximum number of thresholds that should be used. We present the results for the associated production of Higgs boson with vector boson computed at threshold N$^3$LO in QCD. We use the recently available result on the threshold contributions to the inclusive Drell-Yan production cross-section at third order in strong coupling constant. We have implemented it in the publicly available computer package vh@nnlo, thereby obtaining the numerical impact of threshold N$^3$LO contributions for the first time. We find that the inclusion of such corrections do reduce theoretical uncertainties resulting from the renormalization scale.

We discuss coherent and incoherent $\phi$ meson photoproduction off the deuteron at low energy and small momentum transfer with the aim to check whether the recent experimental data need for their interpretation the inclusion of exotic channels. Our analysis of the differential cross section and spin-density matrix elements shows that the existing data may be understood on the base of conventional dynamics. For a firm conclusion about a possible manifestation of exotic channels one has to improve the resolution of the data with providing additional information on channels with spin- and double-spin flip transitions being sensitive to the properties of the photoproduction amplitude in $\gamma p$ and $\gamma D$ reactions.

For a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{F}$-universal if $G$ contains every graph in $\mathcal{F}$ as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. For the family of all graphs on $n$ vertices and of maximum degree at most two, $\mathcal{H}(n,2)$, we prove that there exists a constant $C$ such that for $p \geq C \left( \frac{\log n}{n^2} \right)^{\frac{1}{3}}$, the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ is typically $\mathcal{H}(n,2)$-universal. This bound is optimal up to the constant factor as illustrated in the seminal work of Johansson, Kahn, and Vu for triangle factors. Our result improves significantly on the previous best bound of $p \geq C \left(\frac{\log n}{n}\right)^{\frac{1}{2}}$ due to Kim and Lee. In fact, we prove the stronger result that for the family of all graphs on $n$ vertices, of maximum degree at most two and of girth at least $\ell$, $\mathcal{H}^{\ell}(n,2)$, $G(n,p)$ is typically $\mathcal H^{\ell}(n,2)$-universal when $p \geq C \left(\frac{\log n}{n^{\ell -1}}\right)^{\frac{1}{\ell}}$. This result is also optimal up to the constant factor. Our results verify (in a weak form) a classical conjecture of Kahn and Kalai.

The $F$-pure threshold is a numerical invariant of prime characteristic singularities, that constitutes an analogue of the log canonical thresholds in characteristic zero. We compute the $F$-pure thresholds of determinantal ideals, i.e., of ideals generated by the minors of a generic matrix.

Margaret of Angoulême, Queen of Navarre (Marguerite de Navarre), (1492-1549), was the sister of Francis I, King of France. She was highly-educated and was courted by the future Henry VIII of England. However, at the age of seventeen, she was married by royal decree to the untutored dolt, Charles IV of Alençon. After his death she wed Henry II of Navarre by whom she had a daughter (the mother of the future Henry IV of France) and a son, who died in infancy. The author takes us with Margaret on her perilous journey over the Pyrenees to Spain to attempt to free her brother, Francis, held captive by the Holy Roman Emperor. Margaret's support for the first stirrings of the Reformation in France alarmed the Catholic conservatives of the Sorbonne. Emily Brontë (1818-1848) is best known for her only novel, "Wuthering Heights." She was born in Yorkshire, northern England, where her father was an Anglican curate. When Brontë was three years old her mother died of cancer. At the age of six she joined her three sisters briefly at the Clergy Daughters' School, where privations and abuse contributed to the deaths of two of them. Her elder sister, Charlotte, immortalized this terrible place in "Jane Eyre." In 1846 Emily Brontë, under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, published a selection of her poetry. In 1847 appeared her dark, gothic novel, "Wuthering Heights," with its Byronic anti-hero, Heathcliff. Brontë was shy, even reclusive, and never married. In the fall of 1848 she fell ill with inflammation of the lungs, probably due to rapidly-progressive tuberculosis, and died in December of that year, aged twenty-nine. Harriet Robinson was a frequent contributor to the famous monthly periodical, "The Lowell Offering", which featured poetry, essays and fiction written between 1840-1845 by the young female textile workers (ages 15-35) known as Lowell Mill Girls, living in the innovative Lowell, Massachusetts textile mills communities. Articles published therein describe their living conditions, where they came from, how they felt about their jobs, challenges met, bosses, new experiences and education they received. Rev. A.C. Thomas who organized and edited the publication, found in these factory girls a good field for the application of his belief that women have the right and the ability to express their thoughts, both in speaking and in writing. In his own words, "...and thus was published ... the first magazine or journal written exclusively by women in all the world." In presenting my little book to the public, I feel that I should apologize for so doing, instead of introducing it; for at the time my letters were written I had no idea of publishing them. Since my return, however, several friends who had read them have assured me that they greatly enjoyed them, and felt that others would do so, also, had they the opportunity. The letters have, at least, the merit of being fresh and honest impressions of the places described, as they were written on the spots.
