An experimental investigation of the mixing of two coaxial gas streams was conducted over a range of subsonic jet Mach numbers and temperatures. Three configurations were investigated. One had no innerbody in the primary or inner pipe and was designed to give flat velocity profiles at the exit of the primary pipe. The other two configurations had innerbodies in the primary pipe. These were designed to give velocity profiles similar to those existing at the inlet of propulsive systems such as afterburners. Curves of axial velocity and temperature profiles across the radius are presented at various axial stations. For the two configurations with the innerbody, data are shown at stations out to approximately 8 primary-pipe diameters from the exit of the primary pipe. For the flat-velocity-profile configuration, data are shown at distances extending downstream at 22 primary-pipe diameters from the exit of the primary pipe.

A developing surface frontal system with an overlying polar front jet and subtropical jet stream merging region was present over the continental United States during 22 to 24 March, 1966. Possible crossover flow between these two jet streams has been studied in detail by isentropic air trajectories at four potential temperature levels from 310 K to 335 K. The results of the trajectory analyses on the four surfaces have indicated a cross—over of air parcels from the subtropical jet stream to the polar front jet stream. Mean-motion resonances play an important role in the evolution of various meteoroid streams. Previous works have studied the effects of two-body resonances in different comets and streams. These already established two-body resonances were mainly induced either by Jovian or Saturnian effects but not both at the same time. Some of these resonances have led to spectacular meteor outbursts and storms in the past. In this work, we find a new resonance mechanism involving three bodies -- i.e. meteoroid particle, Jupiter and Saturn, in the Perseid meteoroid stream. Long-term three-body resonances are not very common in real small bodies in our solar system although they can mathematically exist at many resonant sweet spots in an abstract sense in any dynamical system. This particular resonance combination in the Perseid stream is such that it is close to the ratio of 1:4:10 if the orbital periods of Perseid particle, Saturn and Jupiter are considered respectively. These resonant Perseid meteoroids stay resonant for typically about 2 kyr. Highly compact dust trails due to this unique resonance phenomenon are present in our simulations. Some past and future years are presented where three-body resonant meteoroids of different sizes (or subject to different radiation pressures) are computed to come near the Earth. This is the first theoretical example of an active and stable three-body resonance mechanism in the realm of meteoroid streams.

We consider the maximum matching problem in the semi-streaming model formalized by Feigenbaum, Kannan, McGregor, Suri, and Zhang that is inspired by giant graphs of today. As our main result, we give a two-pass $(1/2 + 1/16)$-approximation algorithm for triangle-free graphs and a two-pass $(1/2 + 1/32)$-approximation algorithm for general graphs; these improve the approximation ratios of $1/2 + 1/52$ for bipartite graphs and $1/2 + 1/140$ for general graphs by Konrad, Magniez, and Mathieu. In three passes, we achieve approximation ratios of $1/2 + 1/10$ for triangle-free graphs and $1/2 + 1/19.753$ for general graphs. We also give a multi-pass algorithm where we bound the number of passes precisely---we give a $(2/3 -\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm that uses $2/(3\varepsilon)$ passes for triangle-free graphs and $4/(3\varepsilon)$ passes for general graphs. Our algorithms are simple and combinatorial, use $O(n \log n)$ space, and have $O(1)$ update time per edge. For general graphs, our multi-pass algorithm improves the best known deterministic algorithms in terms of the number of passes: --Ahn and Guha give a $(2/3 - \varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm that uses $O(\log(1/\varepsilon)/\varepsilon^2)$ passes, whereas our $(2/3 - \varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm uses $4/(3\varepsilon)$ passes; --they also give a $(1-\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm that uses $O(\log n \cdot \mathrm{poly}(1/\varepsilon))$ passes, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the input graph; although our algorithm is $(2/3 - \varepsilon)$-approximation, our number of passes do not depend on $n$. Earlier multi-pass algorithms either have a large constant inside big-$O$ notation for the number of passes or the constant cannot be determined due to the involved analysis, so our multi-pass algorithm should use much fewer passes for approximation ratios bounded slightly below $2/3$.

This study focuses on the biofilm kinetics of removing benzene, toluene, and p-xylene (BTX) from gas streams in a three-phase circulating-bed reactor using porous carriers. In the biofilm reactor, gas-liquid equilibrium existed for BTX, but not for oxygen. Oxygen was consumed as a cosubstrate in the oxygenation reactions and the terminal electron acceptor during respiration. When toluene was the sole substrate, oxygen mostly controlled its removals, and toluene inhibition mostly controlled the removals of the toluene intermediate. With increased toluene or decreased oxygen loading, more toluene intermediate was removed inside the biofilm, and the intermediate mass flux changed in direction from out-of to into the biofilm. The mass transfer resistance in the biofilm relieved the intermediate from toluene inhibition. However, higher biofilm accumulation showed adverse effects on reactor performance due to increased demand for oxygen for respiration. The suspended biomass contributed to the removals of toluene and its intermediate and played its most important role when oxygen limitation was significant When toluene/benzene or toluene/p-xylene were removed simultaneously, their inhibition forced more volatile organic compounds to be removed inside the biofilm, where mass transfer resistance relieved the inhibition effects. The removal efficiencies for the lower-concentration compound were smaller.

The theoretical and mathematical background pertinent to the study of steady, corotating solar wind structure in all three spatial dimensions (3-D) is discussed. The dynamical evolution of the plasma in interplanetary space (defined as the region beyond roughly 35 solar radii where the flow is supersonic) is approximately described by the nonlinear, single fluid, polytropic (magneto-) hydrodynamic equations. Efficient numerical techniques for solving this complex system of coupled, hyperbolic partial differential equations are outlined. The formulation is inviscid and nonmagnetic, but methods allow for the potential inclusion of both features with only modest modifications. One simple, highly idealized, hydrodynamic model stream is examined to illustrate the fundamental processes involved in the 3-D dynamics of stream evolution. Spatial variations in the rotational stream interaction mechanism were found to produce small nonradial flows on a global scale that lead to the transport of mass, energy, and momentum away from regions of relative compression and into regions of relative rarefaction.

A series of three interconnecting ponds and three streams located on Andrews AFB were analyzed to determine their current ecological status and future potential for sustaining aquatic life. Biological analysis consisted of collection, enumeration and identification of organisms from the ponds and streams and chemical analysis of water and sediments for ammonia and its derivatives. The results indicated that pond 2 is in excellent ecological condition and ponds 1 and 3 are in very good condition and should be able to maintain stocked game fish which are safe for human consumption. The stream fed by the pond is also in excellent condition. Another stream in the system, fed in part by a 60-inch culvert that runs under the flight line, is in poor condition due to a high ammonia content. These two streams merge, the resulting stream maintains a reasonable amount of aquatic biota. (ttl)

Theoretical aspects of corotating solar wind dynamics on a global scale are explored by means of numerical simulations executed with a nonlinear, inviscid, adiabatic, single-fluid, three-dimensional (3-D) hydrodynamic formulation. A simple, hypothetical 3-D stream structure is defined on a source surface located at 35 solar radius and carefully documents its evolution to 1 AU under the influence of solar rotation. By manipulating the structure of this prototype configuration at the source surface, it is possible to elucidate the factors most strongly affecting stream evolution: (1) the intrinsic correlations among density, temperature, and velocity existing near the source; (2) the amplitude of the stream; (3) the longitudinal breadth of the stream; (4) the latitudinal breadth of the stream; and (5) the heliographic latitude of the centroid of the stream.
