To test whether certain marketing messages can encourage the adoption of an evidence-based programme by school leaders. We will test two message variations - ‘evidence’ and ‘testimonial’. Specifically, the aim of this field trial would be to assess which type of message is more effective in encouraging school leaders to adopt the Embedding Formative Assessment (EFA) programme.

This is a pre-registration for an analysis plan for the above named field trial. The data have been collected and coded at the time of writing. We have examined the distributions of each predictor variable, but these have NOT yet been examined split by condition. None of the hypothesis tests below have been conducted.

We plan an intervention study on lung cancer screening uptake that leverages social influence within local network structures. Our objective is to investigate how social networks can be utilized to promote participation in early detection programs, especially among hard-to-reach communities. To accomplish this, we will recruit as ambassadors individuals who responded to a standard invitation to participate in a lung cancer screening trial. These ambassadors will then invite their social network contacts to participate in the trial as well. We will screen the entire population of Mannheim for easy-to-reach participants by sending letter invitations to every person in the eligible age bracket.

Recently, the PROLONG Trial, investigating 17-OHP's role in preventing recurrent preterm birth, called into question the effectiveness of this treatment regimen. However, most of the study patients in the manufacturer's initiated study were outside of the United States and were significantly different than the original MFMU study participants. In this session, we will review both of these studies and put the results into proper perspective.

Authorities said he shot student-tenant Lauren Kanarek in the chest twice, and opened fire at her fiancé Rob Goodwin, but he missed. Barison had been trying to evict Kanarek from his farm in Long Valley, New Jersey, claiming that the couple threatened him. He even sued police, claiming they failed to investigate when he called 911 three times and that they lied in their reports. To be sure, the dislike between him and his student was mutual. In fact, Kanarek voiced concerns for her safety. “I’m being bullied by a 6’3” man,” she wrote on Facebook before the shooting in a now unavailable post, according to The New York Times. “Bullied to the point I’m afraid. It’s very complicated- I’m not sure of what I can say here- but it seems as if Safe Sport was created for exactly this reason.” The SafeSport organization fields allegations of abuse in U.S. Olympic and Paralympic sports. The aim of this RCT in worksite cafeterias is to measure the effect of dynamic descriptive social norm messages that encourage meat-free food consumption on weekly sales of meat and meat-free meal options. We hypothesize that in the cafeterias where the norm message is displayed, meat-free main meal sales will increase, while there will not be any changes in the control sites. The secondary aim is to explore whether site characteristics (i.e baseline meat-free meal sales, availability of meat-free meal options, and whether the cafeteria serves offices or production facilities) moderate the effect of the messaging intervention.

Dr. William Husel Trial - Former Doctor Fentanyl Murders An Ohio doctor was charged with 25 counts of murder on Wednesday for allegedly prescribing lethal doses of fentanyl to dying patients. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that he has never seen a 25-count murder indictment in his career, adding that the doses Dr. William Husel allegedly ordered in the 25 deaths “could not support any legitimate medical purpose.” Husel, 43, was a doctor for the Mount Carmel Health System; he was fired at the end of 2018 after an internal investigation found wrongdoing. Husel faces a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison for each count — if convicted. Husel’s lawyer Richard Blake claimed that, actually, “this is not a murder case.” “I can assure you there was never any attempt to euthanize anyone by Dr. Husel. At no time did he ever have the intent to euthanize anyone,” he said. Mount Carmel Health System, for its part, has said in a statement that it “will continue to implement meaningful changes throughout our system to ensure events like these never happen again.” The Columbus-based healthcare system also fired 20 other employees after an internal investigation found that patients received exorbitant amounts of Fentanyl. Even though nurses doled out–and pharmacists filled–Husel’s prescriptions, the focus of the criminal investigation remains on Husel, according to prosecutors. Mount Carmel President and CEO Ed Lamb said at the time of the investigation’s conclusion that “regardless of the reason the actions were taken, we take responsibility for the fact that the processes in place were not sufficient to prevent these actions from happening.” He added, “we’re doing everything to understand how this happened and what we need to do to ensure that it never happens again.” The State Medical Board of Ohio suspended Husel’s license in January because the doctor failed “to meet acceptable standards regarding the selection of drugs, violations of the minimal standards of care and failing to cooperate in a board’s investigation,” the board said. Mount Carmel has settled at least five wrongful death suits since it fired Husel. Two of the suits that were settled involved deaths of 73-year-old women. Sherry White died in 2014 after receiving two, 100-microgram doses of fentanyl within 16 minutes of each other, the suit alleged. But White’s death certificate said that she died of septic shock from a urinary tract infection (UTI). The suit in the death of Peggy Francis alleged that she died six minutes after she was given a 200-microgram dose of fentanyl. The death certificate said that Francis—who was being treated for kidney cancer—died from septic shock caused by a UTI. Each of the lawsuits allege that health care providers ignored excessive painkiller warnings from an electronic medical system or that the system failed to work in the first place. After Mount Carmel fired Husel in December, the health care provider updated its guidelines that a usual adult dosage of fentanyl should be between 25 and 100 micrograms, according to an Ohio Department of Health inspection report. At present, study populations in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research projects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies. Global debates about the politics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the “trial communities” produced by this scientific work. Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic ­­­material, this volume represents the emergent field of anthropological inquiry that links Africanist ethnography to recent concerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

Guided by a new framework, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science assessment was updated in 2009 to keep the content current with key developments in science, curriculum standards, assessments, and research. The 2009 framework organizes science content into three broad content areas. Physical science includes concepts related to properties and changes of matter, forms of energy, energy transfer and conservation, position and motion of objects, and forces affecting motion. Life science includes concepts related to organization and development, matter and energy transformations, interdependence, heredity and reproduction, and evolution and diversity. Earth and space sciences includes concepts related to objects in the universe, the history of the Earth, properties of Earth materials, tectonics, energy in Earth systems, climate and weather, and biogeochemical cycles. The 2009 science assessment was composed of 143 questions at grade 4, 162 at grade 8, and 179 at grade 12. Students responded to only a portion of the questions, which included both multiple-choice questions and questions that required a written response. In 2009, the average score of eighth-grade students in Cleveland was 121. This was lower than the average score of 134 for public school students in large cities. The percentage of students in Cleveland who performed at or above the NAEP "Proficient" level was 6 percent in 2009. This percentage was smaller than large cities (17 percent). The percentage of students in Cleveland who performed at or above the NAEP "Basic" level was 26 percent in 2009. This percentage was smaller than large cities (44 percent). The effect of reward on effort is a ubiquitous finding: (high) reward boosts effortful behaviour. Our recent findings with a visual discrimination task (Random Dot Motion task) suggest that this effect is modulated by the prediction horizon (how many trials a cue pertains to) of a given reward condition, as well as the level of effort required to obtain the reward. In the first study, where reward and demand information pertained to only one trial, participants did not modulate their performance based on pre-cued reward information. In the second study, where the reward information was cued for the following six trials, performance improved in the easy condition when correct responses would yield high reward (compared to low reward). This finding was interpreted as indicating a cost related to effort regulation itself, where a one-off exertion of effort is not deemed worth the effort regulation, or is deemed less valuable than effort updating for longer period. This preregistration concerns two follow-up studies to the two studies described above, substituting the visual discrimination task with a Stroop task, arguably a more typical cognitive control task. Experiment 1 will involve a cueing structure whereby each individual trial is preceded by a reward/demand cue. In Experiment 2 a reward/demand cue will cue information relevant for the next six trials. At the end of each of the experiments, questionnaires are administered to measure the participants' reward responsiveness, intrinsic inclination for effort, and ADHD-like characteristics. These additional experiments seek to find how generalisable the effect of prediction horizon, i.e. the cost of effort regulation, is across different cognitively effortful tasks. It is plausible that instead of finding no reward effect in a trial-wise manipulation (like with RDM), a reward effect is found in both cueing schedules with the Stroop task. However, we expect this effect to be stronger with a longer prediction horizon, aligning with the idea that effort regulation itself is regarded as a cost that is amortised by subsequent opportunities for reward.

This phase II trial assesses the effectiveness of ParentChat, an online parenting support group in Udon Thani, Thailand, for caregivers of children aged 2 to 17. It aims to reduce child maltreatment and enhance improve positive parenting, parenting stress, attitudes to corporal punishment, child behaviour problems, parental mental health, parent exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV), child/adolescent exposure to risks, online safety, child learning and development, and parent support of education. 240 participants will be involved. Quantitative data will be collected electronically at baseline, at the fourth and eighth weeks during programme delivery, and one-month post-intervention, with qualitative data gathered through focus groups and interviews. The analysis will employ Stata 17, including regression methods for outcome evaluation.

Depression, neurotic and somatoform disorders affect absenteeism and early retirement, and the need for rehabilitation in this area has increased in recent years. The German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung, DRV) and its affiliated clinics aim to meet this need through rehabilitation and aftercare, focusing on the maintenance and improvement of skills acquired in rehabilitation in everyday life. To overcome barriers such as limited local availability and scheduling conflicts, digital aftercare programs such as Mind-RENA have been developed to provide greater accessibility and flexibility. Mind-RENA provides online psychoeducational content and regular digital interactions with therapists with the goal of maintaining the mental health and work capacity regained during rehabilitation.

Wisconsin man Jacob Cayer, 30, is on trial in the June 7, 2016 murders of his ex-girlfriend Sabrina Teague, 23, and her mother Heesun “Sunny” Teague, 64. The defendant allegedly told authorities he got into a fight with his father, went to his ex’s home, broke in, and attacked Heesun Teague in the bathroom, according to WBAY. He ambushed Sabrina Teague and her boyfriend Joel Kennedy when they got to the residence, authorities said. Kennedy was stabbed, but survived, hit the defendant in the head with a shovel, then called 911, authorities said. The Teagues died from fatal stab wounds, however. Sabrina’s sister Sarama Teague remembered the women as “more than the ex-girlfriend and the mother.” She told The Green Bay Press Gazette, “They were fully complex human beings, beautiful people, and I just want people to know that, and that I loved them.” Their mother Sunny was a character, who arrived in the United States from SOuth Korea in 1983, was proud of her barbecue chicken, had a quirky way of posing for pictures, and enjoyed telling the girls gossip about her Post Office coworkers, Sarama said. Heesun Teague had recently retired from USPS at the time of the murders. Sabrina was going to start school at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to become a social worker, her sister said. She dreamed of starting a half-way house. “One of her dreams was opening a halfway house for troubled teens that didn’t have supportive homes,” Sarama said. “She believed nobody should ever suffer alone, and she was there for everybody.” Cayer has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect. It wasn’t necessarily the first choice of defense. In March, Brown County Judge Tammy Jo Hock denied a defense motions’ request to allow them to provide alternate suspects. They wanted to argue at trial that two other men kidnapped Cayer and framed him for the murders, according to WLUK. In the this version of events, the alleged motive was that these killers feared what Cayer might tell cops about other crimes. Hock said this motion lacked logic, and pointed out one of the alternate suspects were in jail at the time of the Teague murders. Records viewed by Law&Crime show Cayer’s defense recently issued another motion to admit evidence of third-party guilt. Once again, this was before Hock. The defendant’s mental state was certainly a recurring element in the pre-trial hearings. The trial was delayed six times as the judge occasionally considered him incompetent to face the allegations against him. Dr. Christina Engen of the Wisconsin Forensic Unit had testified that she did not think Cayer understood the gravity of this case. The defendant thought he was going to be found innocent, and was “gleeful” when talking about the case, she said according to WBAY. Digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-i) is found to be effective, but is rarely used in China. Hence, we developed a automated Chinese dCBT-i program and examined its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness in individulas with insomnia symptoms. A pilot RCT was conducted on localized digital CBT-i versus Sleep Hygiene Education. Participants could join the program through a WeChat mini program and a website designed for the program. The primary outcomes were the sleep diary and Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI). Participants filled out online scales at the screening point, week 0 for baseline, week 2, week 4 for post-test, and week 8 for follow-up. A total of 217 participants took part [mean age 30.7 (S.D. 10.6), 75.1% female]. The rate of the dCBT-i group who finished all the treatment tasks was 29.9%. Of the 65 participants in the final analysis, dCBT-i intervention was associated with significant improvements at week 4 on sleep efficiency (d = 0.52, p = 0.013), total sleep time (adjusted d = 0.46, p = 0.040), wakefulness after sleep onset (d = -0.33, p = 0.016), and subjective sleep quality (d = 0.60, p = 0.023). The dCBT-i group showed greater improvement at week 4 on SCI-8 scores (d = 0.58, p = 0.054) and on ISI-7 scores (d = -0.95, p < 0.001) and DBAS-16 scores (d = 1.00, p < 0.001). The dCBT-i program reduced insomnia symptoms significantly, increased total sleep time by an average of 39 minutes, and reduced wakefulness after sleep onset by an average of 16 minutes. The study indicates the direction of future study for the Chinese population.

Abstract Background: People with a mental illness experience substantial disparities in health, including increased rates of morbidity and mortality caused by potentially preventable chronic diseases. One contributing factor to such disparity is a higher prevalence of modifiable health risk behaviors, such as smoking, inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, harmful alcohol consumption, and inadequate physical activity. Evidence supports the effectiveness of preventive care in reducing such risks, and guidelines recommend that preventive care addressing such risks be incorporated into routine clinical care. Although community-based mental health services represent an important potential setting for ensuring that people with a mental illness receive such care, research suggests its delivery is currently sub-optimal. A study will be undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of a clinical practice change intervention in increasing the routine provision of preventive care by clinicians in community mental health settings. Methods/design: A two-group multiple baseline design will be utilized to assess the effectiveness of a multi-strategic intervention implemented over 12 months in increasing clinician provision of preventive care. The intervention will be implemented sequentially across the two groups of community mental health services to increase provision of client assessment, brief advice, and referral for four health risk behaviors (smoking, inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, harmful alcohol consumption, and inadequate physical activity). Outcome measures of interest will be collected via repeated cross-sectional computer-assisted telephone interviews undertaken on a weekly basis for 36 months with community mental health clients. Discussion: This study is the first to assess the effectiveness of a multi-strategic clinical practice change intervention in increasing routine clinician provision of preventive care for chronic disease behavioral risk factors within a network of community mental health services. The results will inform future policy and practice regarding the ability of clinicians within mental health settings to improve preventive care provision as a result of such interventions. Abstract Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive airway disease characterised by neutrophilic airway inflammation or bronchitis. Neutrophilic bronchitis is associated with both bacterial colonisation and lung function decline and is common in exacerbations of COPD. Despite current available therapies to control inflammation, neutrophilic bronchitis remains common. This study tested the hypothesis that azithromycin treatment, as an add-on to standard medication, would significantly reduce airway neutrophil and neutrophils chemokine (CXCL8) levels, as well as bacterial load. We conducted a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in COPD participants with stable neutrophilic bronchitis. Methods: Eligible participants (n = 30) were randomised to azithromycin 250 mg daily or placebo for 12 weeks in addition to their standard respiratory medications. Sputum was induced at screening, randomisation and monthly for a 12 week treatment period and processed for differential cell counts, CXCL8 and neutrophil elastase assessment. Quantitative bacteriology was assessed in sputum samples at randomisation and the end of treatment visit. Severe exacerbations where symptoms increased requiring unscheduled treatment were recorded during the 12 week treatment period and for 14 weeks following treatment. A sub-group of participants underwent chest computed tomography scans (n = 15). Results: Nine participants with neutrophilic bronchitis had a potentially pathogenic bacteria isolated and the median total bacterial load of all participants was 5.22×107 cfu/mL. Azithromycin treatment resulted in a non-significant reduction in sputum neutrophil proportion, CXCL8 levels and bacterial load. The mean severe exacerbation rate was 0.33 per person per 26 weeks in the azithromycin group compared to 0.93 exacerbations per person in the placebo group (incidence rate ratio (95%CI): 0.37 (0.11,1.21), p = 0.062). For participants who underwent chest CT scans, no alterations were observed. Conclusions: In stable COPD with neutrophilic bronchitis, add-on azithromycin therapy showed a trend to reduced severe exacerbations sputum neutrophils, CXCL8 levels and bacterial load. Guided by a new framework, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) science assessment was updated in 2009 to keep the content current with key developments in science, curriculum standards, assessments, and research. The 2009 framework organizes science content into three broad content areas. Physical science includes concepts related to properties and changes of matter, forms of energy, energy transfer and conservation, position and motion of objects, and forces affecting motion. Life science includes concepts related to organization and development, matter and energy transformations, interdependence, heredity and reproduction, and evolution and diversity. Earth and space sciences includes concepts related to objects in the universe, the history of the Earth, properties of Earth materials, tectonics, energy in Earth systems, climate and weather, and biogeochemical cycles. The 2009 science assessment was composed of 143 questions at grade 4, 162 at grade 8, and 179 at grade 12. Students responded to only a portion of the questions, which included both multiple-choice questions and questions that required a written response. In 2009, the average score of fourth-grade students in Baltimore was 117. This was lower than the average score of 135 for public school students in large cities. The percentage of students in Baltimore who performed at or above the NAEP "Proficient" level was 6 percent in 2009. This percentage was smaller than large cities (20 percent). The percentage of students in Baltimore who performed at or above the NAEP "Basic" level was 31 percent in 2009. This percentage was smaller than large cities (56 percent). This story, about a man who wakes up transformed into a bug and the repercussions it has on his life and the people around him, has intrigued me for many years. The translation is by Ian Johnston, not the translator that is in Gutenberg; I like Johnston's more. What does it mean? [Spoiler possibly]In my mind it is not complicated at all and is most probably an autobiography of how Kafka himself had experienced his early life living with his parents. Kafka describes how he had experienced his parents’ financial and emotional exploitation's of him, to the point of detaching from them and thereby ceasing to be their son (the real metamorphosis). Gregor’s metamorphosis is that of Kafka’s being an obedient son, subserviently paying for his parents’ narcissistic needs with his own life, into being a disobedient one—as if he had become a ‘piece of vermin’. Gregor’s parents possessed a large sum of money in savings, which symbolizes the needlessness of Gregor’s exploitation. In other words, the parents did not love him for who he was, but for his loyal willingness to undergo this exploitation. Reduced to vermin, Gregor can (or will) no longer financially benefit his parents. It is the parents that caused Gregor’s/Kafka’s metamorphosis. The debt Gregor intended to repay his parents symbolizes the emotional debt many adult children continue to feel towards their elderly parents for the love and care they have provided. Sister Grete, at first siding with her brother against their unfriendliest father, eventually switches sides after her brother’s metamorphosis, conveniently seizing first place in the sibling hierarchy, a reference to Kafka’s relationship with one of his siblings. The reason why the book continues to enjoy popularity among large audiences of readers, in my opinion, is because they recognize themselves in Gregor Samsa, which makes it all the more astounding how many ‘expert’ interpretations attempt to distract students of Kafka away from the most likely one. I know that some of our absolute best LibriVox readers have already recorded this marvelous story but this but it has also been on my list of "yearn to record" things for a long time and for my personal and entirely selfish pleasure now is the time to do it before I get any older or another flood hits us.
