19ERIC ED349997: IFLA's Core Programme For The Advancement Of Librarianship In The Third World--ALP.

By

This brochure provides information on the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) core program for the Advancement of Librarianship in the Third World (ALP), which was launched in 1984 to further the library profession, library institutions, and library and information services in less developed countries. Program objectives are summarized, and goals and plans for 1992-97 are discussed. Within the Special ALP areas the goals are: (1) to assist library staff, library schools, and library associations in education and training programs; (2) to promote the establishment and development of library and information services to the public with particular attention to the needs of rural and urban marginal areas; and (3) to encourage greater involvement and identification of libraries with literacy work. The ALP International Focal Point located at Uppsala University Library in Sweden, and IFLA's Division of Regional Activities with its three regional offices for Africa, Asia and Oceania, and Latin America and the Caribbean are described. Guidelines for ALP project applications are provided, including information about project areas, relevant criteria, necessary information to be submitted, and the annual procedure and schedule for project handling. A directory of IFLA headquarters and ALP offices is included. (MES)

38ERIC ED214697: Towards The Third Cycle Of APEID. Final Report. Regional Consultation Meeting On The Asian Programme Of Educational Innovation For Development (7th, Bangkok, Thailand, June 1-10, 1981).

By

The Seventh Regional Consultation Meeting on the Asian Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) was devoted to a tripartite review of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) component of APEID. APEID had undertaken four development themes in its second cycle: universalization of education at early school levels and functional education for out-of-school youth and adults; integrated rural development; productive skills; and health and nutrition. The four themes were found to have continuing relevance to the concerns of the countries. The gains from APEID were regarded as high although their spread among the countries and the Associated Centres was, not surprisingly, uneven. The Meeting recommended eight programme areas for APEID's third cycle (1982-1986) which fell into two clusters: first were programme areas in which education was linked to a development goal, including education itself as a development goal. The second cluster comprised programme areas which were in the nature of infrastructure development and contribute as such to a whole range of development goals. The document includes group discussions and reports on programme areas, agenda items, and an appendix listing innovative projects of some of the Associated Centres for 1982-1986. (BRR)

Full transcript CUE: INTRODUCTION A collie moves across the screen to reveal the title card: 'AMAZING Animal Helpers’. NARRATOR: Welcome to the world of the amazing animal helpers. FADE TRANSITION: Henry drives in from the right in his car, going past a tree and a row of houses. The car’s radio has a song playing from it, and Henry is bobbing along to the music. HENRY: Helping, helping, helping, what a bunch of baloney! CUT: Cuts to a close-up of the radio, with Henry cranking up the volume. N (as ANNOUNCER): And remember critters, the animal all-star awards are today! CUT: Cuts to a front-on view of Henry driving his car down the street. H: Awards? What’s the prize? N (as ANNOUNCER): The winner gets to be in a parade and attend a special pizza feed in his or her honour. TRANSITION: A thought bubble appears next to Henry, which fills the screen. The bubble shows Henry gulping down several whole pizzas. H: What bliss! How do I win? N (as ANNOUNCER): The award goes to this year’s most helpful animal. CUT: Cuts back to the front-on view of Henry in his car. H: Oh boy, I’d better get started. I’ve got a lot of helping to do. CUT: Henry pulls out past the camera, before the view cuts back to a close-up of the radio. N (as ANNOUNCER): Of course, everyone expects the winner to be Goodie, our helpful collie friend. CUT: Cuts to a side-on view of Henry stopping his car at a set of traffic lights. H: Goodie the helpful collie? Who is that? CUT: Cuts to a view from the other side of the crossing, showing Henry in his car in the background. Goodie the collie is helping three frogs to cross the road. N: That’s Goodie, doing what she does best. TRANSITION: Henry sounds the horn on his car a couple of times. H: Helping frogs cross the road? You call that helping! CUT: Briefly cuts to a close-up of Goodie, who barks, before the camera cuts to a close-up front view of Henry in his car. H: Oh yeah, you’ll see. It’s going to be me up there in lights! I’ll show that Goodie what helping’s all about. TRANSITION: Another thought bubble appears next to Henry, which fills the screen. The thought bubble shows Henry reflected in the red light of the traffic lights. When the light turns green, Henry disappears. The camera zooms in on the green light, which fades to stock footage. N: Henry, something tells me you don’t have the first idea what being helpful really means. H: Of course I do! I’ve been helping myself for years. I even have second helpings when there’s cake. N: I’m talking about helping others, especially human beings. H: They’re one of my favourite animals. N: For a long time, humans have relied on animals to help them get around. They’re especially helpful in crossing terrain where cars and boats can’t go. H: Cool, man! If you’re a cool man. N: Animal’s fur, clipped in summer, helps people stay warm through the harshest Mongolian winters. And animals have been helping humans on farms for literally thousands of years. H: What? They haven’t had a lunch break? That’s terrible! N: Henry, don’t you get it? People have been developing special relationships with animals for centuries. Animals help people in need and in return many people help animals when they’re in need. For vets, it’s their job. Sometimes they even get to help endangered animals, like this rhino. H: I went to the vet once. I said doctor, doctor I’ve got a pain in the neck! N: What did he say to that? H: That makes two of us. N: I’m not surprised. TRANSITION: The stock footage is wheeled off the left side of the screen and is replaced with Henry, standing upright in front of a purple wall. Henry is wearing a boy scout hat and a neckerchief. N: Have you joined the Boy Scouts Henry? H: Henry’s Help Scouts, actually. I promise to do my best to help other animals and to win that contest no matter what. Now, who needs help around here? CUT: A chicken clucks and the view cuts to a street corner with a chicken and her egg in a straw nest on the roadside. Henry walks in from the right and stops next to them. H: You? Here, let me help you cross that road. Now which comes first, the chicken or the egg? CUT: Cuts to a Henry’s-eye view of the chicken and egg. Henry raises his hand to point at them for eeny meeny miny moe. H: Eeny meeny miny moe, when the lizard’s green it’s time to go! CUT: Cuts to a view of the traffic lights. They change from red to flashing green, with Henry’s face shown on the green light. N: I always wanted to know Henry, why did the chicken cross the road? CUT: Cuts to a close-up view showing Henry and the chicken standing at the crossing. The view then cuts to the crossing, showing the chicken running across, before Henry walks over with the egg balanced on his head. H: Because the lizard said so! Look both ways, move along now. Now for that egg. N: Careful there Henry! Don’t drop it! TRANSITION: The hat drops off the top of Henry’s hat and rolls around the rim of the hat, with Henry going back-and-forth to try and keep it balanced. Henry then flicks his head up and the egg flies off. A cracking sound can be heard. H: What? Whoa! Ta-da! Whoops! N: Henry! H: Oh no. CUT: Cuts to a view of the broken egg at the side of the road, with a chick standing next to it and cheeping. Henry looks at the chick from the right of the screen. H: How wonderful it is to help a new baby into this world. Do you think I’m cut out for the caring professions? N: Caring yes, carrying no way! TRANSITION: Stock footage moves in from the right, and plays until the cartoon. H: Well from the looks of it those guys don’t need any animal helpers. They’ve got a great big red tractor instead. N: You’d be surprised Henry. Even nowadays you can still find a lot of farmers using horses or oxen to help them plough fields. H: And you know how strong they are? N: How strong? H: As strong as an ox. N: Thanks Henry. You’re a big help. H: Any time. N: When there are cattle to round up, the caballeros of South American grasslands need all the help they can get. H: You mean cowboys, don’t you? Yee-haw, they’re ridin’ rounding up the little doggies, roping calves – almost. N: Caballeros are cowboys Henry, highly skilled too. But without their horses to help them get around, they would never be able to manage these huge cattle ranches. H: On the other hand, they wouldn’t have to worry about getting saddle sore either. Ow! TRANSITION: The stock footage gradually fades to orange-brown, before the camera pans up to reach the cartoon. CUE: First cartoon plays TRANSITION: The stock footage peels away and floats off like a piece of paper. Henry is riding down the street on a scooter, with a front-on view. N: Have another ‘helpful’ scheme Henry? H: You betcha. Meals on wheels – it’s just a small way to help out some of my oldest and dearest friends. CUT: Cuts to a side-on view, showing Henry coming to a stop next to a deer standing on the pavement. Henry drives off past it. N: Like that? H: Not that kind of deer. She can get her own dinner. N: Henry! CUT: Cuts to a different view, showing Henry pulling up next to a tortoise standing on the pavement. H: Now he’s perfect. N: Oh brother. H: Hiya tortoise, I brought you some dinner. CUT: Cuts to a close-up of Henry, as he disappears behind the box on the back of his scooter. The box unfolds into a wider surface and a canopy appears at the top of the screen. Henry pops up wearing a vendor’s hat. The food goes along the surface from left-to-right, with Henry singing the order. H: I’ve got hamburger, cheeseburger, mini burger, Mondo burger, large fries, small fries, slice of cake, onion rings, crunchy things, diet cola, spicy wings and I’ll top it all off with an extra-large shake! TRANSITION: The cart starts to shake with the weight of the milkshake. H: Phew. Whoops should have made that a medium. No! TRANSITION: The cart tips over to the right and a huge wave of pink milkshake covers the screen. The view cuts to Henry standing in the street, with the spilled milkshake behind him. Henry is covered with milkshake, while the tortoise approaches a dropped lettuce leaf. H: Well didn’t you know it? I bring all this great food and all the guy wants is the side salad. CUT: Cuts to a front-on view of Henry, who starts licking milkshake off the road. H: Oh well. If you can’t help others, help yourself. N: Henry, it’s only helping if you bring them what they like to eat or lead them to what they like to eat. TRANSITION: Several splats of milkshake cover the screen. As it slides down, the view is replaced by stock footage that plays until the cartoon. H: I tried. How was I to know he’d be such a picky eater? N: It may come as a surprise to you, but not everyone loves junk food Henry. Here in West Africa, you’ll find some people who share a taste for fresh fish with a surprising animal helper. Once their nets are in place, the fishermen call bottlenose dolphins towards the shore by beating the sea with a stick. H: Dolphins! How do they help? N: The school of dolphins forms a living net, driving any fish in their path toward the shore. H: And strait into the fisherman’s nets! N: Bingo. H: What do you call those fish? N: Grey mullet. H: They should be called popcorn fish, the way they pop out of the sea. Pop! N: This amazing relationship between man and dolphin has existed here for hundreds of years and it helps the dolphins too. The fishermen leave them leftovers in reward for their services. H: Or as my mom always said, make sure you leave a little something for Mr Manners. N: Some people in France have a great food-finding helper. H: You’re kidding – pigs! Don’t they hog all the food? N: Oh, they’d like to, especially when they’re digging for truffles which pigs are particularly good at rooting out. H: So what are truffles anyway? N: They’re a kind of fungi, like a mushroom, which grows underground on tree roots. These pigs have been specially bred for truffle hunting, with their fine sense of smell. H: I never met a pig that smelled fine. Looks like she’s got one. They must be pretty tasty. N: These people think so too. Truffles are one of the most sought-after and most expensive foods on Earth. H: It’s like I always say – everybody loves a fun guy. N: Oh please. TRANSITION: The stock footage fades out, before the camera pans down to reach the cartoon. CUE: Second cartoon plays TRANSITION: The cartoon pans downwards off the screen, which cuts to the beginning of Henry’s news report. N: Henry! Henry, it’s time for your report on bat droppings! H: What? Now? N: Yes, now! H: Out of my way! Journa-lizard coming through! Tonight, chimps build smallest racetrack yet and kangaroos get bruised. But now our top story. TRANSITION: Main report begins, with the story represented with clip-art and stock images. H: We’ve all heard of hockey-playing ducks and we know crickets invented the game of cricket but the latest animal to make it big in sports is a baseball bat. His name – Bat Guano. He’s got great batting technique thanks to a lifetime of batting practice. He’s great at catching fly balls or just plain flies; too bad he always drops them. In fact, he leads the league in droppings. However, Bat will only play night games; he spends his days just hanging out at home. Bat grew up on a farm where he used to help out any way he could ‘til one day he caught that old baseball bug and was spotted by talent scout Eagle-Eye Malloy who protected him from all the sharks out there and encouraged him screaming “Go, go, Guano” which is just what Bat does best. Do you think they bought it? N: You couldn’t even give it away Henry. H: Rats. TRANSITION: The news logo turns into a screen of stock footage. The stock footage then fills the screen. N: I’ll grant you one thing though. Bat guano does exist. H: I knew it! N: You’ll find it in a cave like this one in Thailand near a Buddhist monastery. H: So, does that make these bats Buddhists? N: Well they are prized by the monks for the guano they produce. H: So which one’s guano? Where is he? N: The guano is in the cave Henry and the local farmers are going to find it. H: But all the bats just left. N: You still don’t get it do you Henry. Guano isn’t a bat it’s something that comes out of a bat. H: Like little squeaks? N: Uh, wrong end. H: Oh. Eww. N: Whatever you think of it, these farmers think bat manure is great stuff. H: What do they use it for? Not cooking, I hope. N: The manure is sold to farmers to use as fertiliser on their crops and there’s no shortage of it with so many bats living in the cave. So indirectly the bats are animal helpers, helping people earn a living and put food on the table. H: By dropping on the floor! That’s crazy! N: Not crazy Henry, batty! BOTH: Ha-ha-ha-ha! TRANSITION: The stock footage gradually fades out, while fading in from the background is a view of grassy hills, with trees in the distance and a bush in the foreground. Henry pops up from behind the bush with a set of binoculars on his head. H: That Goodie, Goodie, Goodie. What’s she doing now? N: Getting spied on, I see. CUT: Cuts to a binocular-eye view, showing Goodie sitting next to a lamb. H: Babysitting a pwetty wittle wambie. Now why didn’t I think of that? CUT: Cuts back to the view of Henry hiding in the bush with his binoculars. N: I still don’t think you understand the true spirit of helping Henry. H: Oh yes I do. I’m going to help myself to that prize. CUT: Henry goes down behind the bush and comes up with a football bouncing on his nose. He bounces it away, before the view cuts to Goodie and the lamb. Goodie chases the ball as it goes off-screen, with Henry coming in from the left. The view then cuts to a close-up of a bush, with Henry moving the lamb behind it. H: Here Goodie now fetch the ball, fetch the ball! And now to hide the lamb and get Goodie into trouble. Come on, come on, he-he! CUT: Cuts to a close-up of Henry and the lamb behind the bush. H: Keep quiet lambie and she’ll never find us. CUT: Cuts from a close-up of Goodie to a wider view, showing Henry standing behind the bush. The lamb is standing to the right, while Goodie walks around the left side of the bush. The lamb turns and walks away. H: Oh, hi there Goodie. I was just trying to help you out with the babysitting, right lambie? Rats. I almost got away with it. TRANSITION: The football bounces across the screen. Henry hits it with his nose and it flies into the screen. This cuts to stock footage, which plays until the cartoon. N: Henry, you never had a chance. You should have known that when it comes to being helpful the top dog is a dog. That’s true up here too. Every mountain has its beauty and also its dangers. The American Rockies are no different. That’s where these guys come in. H: Oh great. Is this one of those dramatic reconstructions of a heroic pet rescue? I love these things. But how come they’ve always got dogs in them. They should have more about lizards! N: In reality Henry dogs make excellent search-and-rescue helpers, combining their natural skills with extensive training. H: Why is that? N: They’re fast and strong, fearless, comfortable around people and most of all they just love to be helpful. H: Yeah, tell me about it. N: This rescue dog is being trained in the fine art of avalanche rescue. Because of their high intelligence and fantastic sense of smell, golden retrievers are particularly good at this. The trainee loses no time in sniffing out a survivor. H: How do you know what’s down there? N: We’ll soon find out. Rescue dogs never give up once they’ve picked up a scent. H: It looks like there’s air down there. N: Even with an air pocket, a person would be lucky to survive for very long buried in snow. H: Good doggie! Good doggie! N: Look Henry, they found a survivor! H: Wait a second – is that a real person down there? N: They try to make these practice rescues as real for the dogs as possible, but we should remind all our viewers out there… H: Don’t try this at home! N: Aw, I wanted to say that! TRANSITION: The sun from the stock footage sends a beam over the screen that causes it to fade to white. The cartoon moves up from below. CUE: Third cartoon plays TRANSITION: The red curtains close over the cartoon and the opening of the Golden Gecko Awards begins, with this episode having Henry stick his head out from behind the curtain. Henry then pops up at the front with his bow-tie on. N: And now, ladies and gentle-lizards, it’s time for Henry’s Amazing Golden Gecko Awards! H: The winners of my all-time best amazing animal helper are… CUT: The standard Golden Gecko Awards ceremony takes place, with the montage of reindeer footage lasting from their awarding of the Golden Gecko to the cartoon. H: In third place, for proving that when it comes to helping out around the farm, two heads are better than one, it’s the ox. And in second place with an eye for adventure, a nose for danger and two ears for the price of one it’s the search-and-rescue super pooch. But tonight’s Golden Gecko Award winner comes straight from the school of hard knocks. Forget Goodie the wonder dog, I’m talking about that hard-working helper of the frozen north, the reindeer. They’re called reindeer because they love walking in the rain. N: Henry! H: Okay. They’re called that because they’ll let you tie a rope around them and rein them in. Too bad nobody told these ones. Reindeer are found in northernmost Europe and here in frozen Siberia where the nomads have a tradition of moving on whenever they feel a longing for whiter pastures. Now you may think that the heaviest thing a reindeer ever has to pull is a stout gentleman around the rooftops once a year. But now you can finally see that reindeer will actually help move your whole family including your house and your little dog too. And if that isn’t a mobile home, I don’t know what is. In fact, reindeer are so helpful they’ll all try to get in on the act. Besides helping humans, they help each other by sticking close together which helps them to stay warm in the arctic freezer. The bond between man and reindeer is very close up here and both animals have enough sense to head south before the worst of the long winter sets in. The humans benefit from the free ride south and the reindeer, well they get the Golden Gecko Award, plus a gourmet dinner for one from the nomad of their choice. TRANSITION: Snow falls down and covers the stock footage, which then links to the cartoon. CUE: Fourth cartoon plays TRANSITION: The cartoon pans off the right of the screen. A view of a grassy field with a bush standing in the middle fades into shot. The bush starts rustling, before Henry sticks his head out the top of it. N: Henry what are you up to now? H: If I’m going to beat Goodie in this helpful game, it’s going to take some heroic action. TRANSITION: Henry goes back behind the bush. He then leaps over the top of the bush, wearing a pair of pointy-ended sunglasses and two rockets strapped to his back. He lands in front of the bush. H: Introducing Lizard-Man, the greatest helper in my universe! Now all I need is someone to help. CUT: Cuts to a view of Goodie standing. Henry walks up to her from the left of the screen. Goodie whimpers to Henry when he talks to her. The rockets on Henry’s back gently push him forward, so he occasionally has to take a couple of steps back. H: Why Goodie, what’s that you say? Little Timmy’s gone down the well? And his mommy’s worried? ‘Cos he hasn’t got his water wings? CUT: Cuts to a close-up of Henry’s head. He turns to face the camera. H: Stop your whimpering, this looks like a job for Lizard-Man! CUT: Cuts back to the original view of Henry and Goodie. Henry turns away from the camera and blasts away on his rockets. H: Prepare for take-off! Here I go! CUT: Cuts to a view of Henry flying through the air. The rockets come off and Henry, now flailing, slowly rotates through the air before dropping down off-screen. The view then cuts to the well, whose roof splits in two to allow Henry to fall down it, before the roof closes again. The camera cuts to Goodie laying nearby, before she barks and walks off-screen. H: Aargh! Help me! Someone! It’s dark down here! N: Help is on the way, Henry! CUT: Cuts to a close-up of the well. Goodie walks around the back of it, before the view cuts to Goodie with the rope for the well’s bucket around her neck. The view then cuts to inside the well, with Henry and Timmy (a puppy) being winched up. H: Everything’s fine, Timmy. CUT: Cuts to a view of the well, with Timmy and Henry in the bucket. H: Goodie? I can’t be saved by Goodie! Drop that rope! CUT: Cuts to a view of Goodie removing the rope from around her neck. The view cuts back to the well, showing Timmy standing on the edge while Henry is dropped back into the well. H: Wait! Aargh! N: Don’t you remember the old saying, pride goeth before a fall. TRANSITION: A piece of paper with stock footage on blows up from the bottom of the screen. It covers the screen and plays until the end section. H: Yeseth. Now geteth me out of here! N: Wise up Henry. When you really need help, you have to take it where you find it. If orangutans can do it, so can you. H: Aw, isn’t he the sweetest little thing? N: He is, but being so intelligent and good looking has its disadvantages too. H: Oh, don’t I just know it. N: This is an orangutan orphanage on the Asian island of Borneo, where a new orphan is getting checked in by the vet. H: What happened to his parents? N: Many orangutans are orphaned because of forest fires or accidents. Even worse, because baby orangutans are so cute, some people see them as pets. They get taken away from their parents before they have a chance to learn the ways of the wild. H: Like how to ride in wheelbarrows without falling out? N: No. I mean the basics of climbing and feeding themselves. Fortunately, as well as a few harmful people out there, there are a lot of good people around too. They’ve become animal helpers themselves, helping animals to learn how to cope with each other and return to their proper home. H: Excuse me but that’s just beautiful. TRANSITION: Balloons fall from the sky and cover the stock footage. The view cuts to Henry, driving his car and wearing his sunglasses. N: Hey there Lizard-Man, what’s the news? H: Haven’t you heard? CUT: The camera cuts to a close-up of the car radio, before cutting back to the previous view with balloons and confetti raining down around the car. N (as ANNOUNCER): And here comes the star of our parade; our very own animal of the year. H: Hi there. Hello. Thank you. N: Don’t tell me you won! TRANSITION: Henry pulls the car forward to show that Goodie is riding in the back of the car. H: Not exactly. You can’t compete with a do-gooder like Goodie do-good here. CUT: Cuts to a front-on view of Henry and Goodie in the car as it drives down a street. H: But I did learn a lot about helping today. N: I’m really glad to hear that, Henry. H: In fact, Goodie wants me to help her eat her pizza at the awards dinner tonight, right Goodie? CUT: Cuts to a close-up of Goodie, who barks at the camera. The view then cuts to a side-on view showing the whole car with Henry and Goodie. N: Henry, you’ve got a long way to go. H: I don’t mind. I love long parades, don’t you Goodie? Sit Goodie, sit! ENDING TRANSITION: The car, with Henry and Goodie, drives off the left of the screen and the credits start to play. Henry is driving his car in the city and is listening to the radio, when he hears that the winner for the Animal All-Star Awards would be announced that day - with rewards of a parade and a pizza feed in the winner's honour - an offer which Henry takes an immediate liking to. But, to Henry's dismay, he hears that the winner will probably be 'Goodie', 'our helpful collie friend'. He then learns more about animals which have strong relations with humans in daily life. After the introductory segment about the relations between working animals and people, Henry begins a scheme, 'Henry's Help Scouts', wearing Boy Scout attire. His mantra: "I promise to do my best, to help other animals .. and to win that contest no matter what." He finds a chicken with a CGI egg who appears to need help crossing the road, to which the narrator asks Henry, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" / "Because the lizard said so!" The chicken crosses the road, and Henry brings along the egg, which he balances on his hat. He loses balance, and the egg is tossed. At the other end of the road, he finds that the egg has hatched with the newborn chick outside. This leads into a segment of ploughing animals, such as draught-horses and oxen. First cartoon Tyrannosaurus is pulling a plough in a field - and struggles to do so. He arrives to Lizard wearing dungarees, presumably the farmer and the dinosaur's owner. The dinosaur catches sight of another Tyrannosaurus who is happily driving a tractor, and indicates this to Lizard. After some persuasion, the dinosaur's request is granted by Lizard - who is in the front seat of the tractor - which is being pulled still by the frustrated dinosaur. Following this, the second segment begins - Henry, retaining his hat from his previous scheme, has started a food-delivery scheme - "Meals on Wheels", a way to help out some of "my oldest, and dearest friends." He stops near a roe deer, which the narrator suggests to Henry, who retorts - "not that kind of deer! She can get her own dinner." He then finds a small tortoise, to whom he introduces his range of options: "I've got hamburger, cheeseburger, mini burger, mondo burger, large fries, small fries, slice of cake. / Onion rings, crunchy things [shows a bag of popcorn], diet cola, spicy wings - and I'll top it all off which an extra large shake!" Said extra large shake makes the stand inclined to one side, and eventually topple over, causing the shake to spill onto the road, and some lettuce to fall - which the tortoise proceeds to eat. "All the guy wants is the side-salad!" This leads into a segment featuring animals which help people to find food - such as dolphins and pigs. Second cartoon In a similar manner to a truffle-digging pig in the previous animal segment, Tyrannosaurus is seen with his snout in the dirt, moving in a straight line. He hits something, shaking a nearby tree, to find a bicycle wheel, which he promptly tosses. He continues, finds a wheelbarrow, which he tosses also. He arrives to a rock with Lizard standing on it. The lizard runs off, and the dinosaur follows to find a large hole. After some digging, the dinosaur digs up a slim table - complete with a prepared dish and two glasses. A Frog waiter arrives to take off the cloche - to reveal a pile of round nuggets/truffles on the plate. Henry now has to do his report on bat droppings, after announcing several side-stories relating to chimps building the "smallest race-track yet", and kangaroos "getting bruised". The main story begins - it is about a baseball-playing bat, by the name of Bat Guano, with great batting techniques from a lifetime of practice. Henry details Guano's backstory, including how Guano grew up on a farm, where he proved very helpful. He was then recruited by Eagle-eyed Maloy [presented as a golden eagle], who protected him from 'all the sharks out there.' [Show: 4 CGI renderings of great white sharks with bowler hats and googly-eyes.] After the narrator's critique, an animal segment about real bat guano begins, including Buddhists entering a cave to collect it. After this, a segment begins with Henry with a pair of binoculars in a bush - who laments Goodie's nature. Goodie is babysitting a lamb, to Henry's dismay. Henry throws a ball for Goodie to fetch - so he can kidnap the lamb and hide it. To his shock, Goodie is just behind him. A segment then begins detailing the St. Bernard, and their good sense of smell. Third cartoon A Lizard is running from an angry Tyrannosaurus, who suddenly stops in his tracks, to the lizard's surprise. The dinosaur has a thorn in his foot. The Lizard extracts the thorn - only to make the dinosaur even angrier. The dinosaur steps on another thorn after some more chasing, and to his confusion, the Lizard measures the size of his foot. The Lizard returns with a large pair of shoes, to the dinosaur's happiness. The cartoon ends with the two running happily together. Henry gives out his Golden Gecko Award for all-time best Animal Helper. The bronze medal goes to the ox, the silver medal to the mountain rescue dog ["search-and-rescue super pooch"], and the Golden Gecko is awarded to the reindeer for their strength and assistance to nomads. Fourth cartoon After the Golden Gecko Awards, a cartoon begins featuring an egg and a large nest. Tyrannosaurus is shown stroking the egg and treating it with care before putting it back in the nest. A baby Lizard then arrives to reveal that the egg is fake - it opens the egg to sit in it, blowing a raspberry. The cartoon ends with the dinosaur pulling a face of disappointment. After the cartoon, a Henry segment begins where Henry introduces himself as 'Lizard Man' - the 'greatest helper in the universe'. Looking for help, he enquires to Goodie, 'What's that you say?' 'Little Timmy's gone down the well?' 'And his mommy's worried?' 'Cause he hasn't got his water-wings?' 'Lizard Man' then prepares for take-off - only for his flying equipment to malfunction, only for himself to fall down the well too. After calling for help, Goodie arrives to lift the bucket with Henry and Timmy - but when Henry sees who he is being rescued by, he orders Goodie to drop the rope. She does so accordingly, throwing Henry back into the well [though Timmy can be seen to have climped out off-screen]. The narrator enquires, 'don't you remember the old saying - pride goeth before a fall?' To which Henry retorts, 'listen - now getteth me out of here!' Another animal segment begins, featuring an orangutan orphanage. In the final Henry segment, we see Henry, still in his 'Lizard Man' glasses, at the front of a limosuine in a parade. The winner of the contest has been announced - it is Goodie, who is being chaperoned by Henry. Henry laments that he could never compete with Goodie's nature - though he did learn a lot about helping - and notes that Goodie wants him to help eat her pizza at the awards dinner. 1Concept of Nature

By

Book's cover

In The Concept of Nature, Alfred North Whitehead discusses the interrelatedness of time, space, and human perception.
The idea of objects as 'occasions of experience', arguments against body-mind duality and the search for an all-encompassing 'philosophy of nature' are examined, with specific reference to contemporary (Einstein, with whose theory of relativity he has some complaints) and ancient (Plato, Aristotle) approaches. 5Science and the Modern World

By

Book's cover

It is fortunate that in the twentieth century, science and philosophy are beginning to be united in the same person as they were in the seventeenth century before their fatal divorce occurred. Prof. Whitehead's latest book cries out to be read and re-read and meditated upon (and to that end if possible possessed) by every man of science who is not content to live merely in his own special‘; groove of routine ’ and is concerned in the trend and tendency of science as a whole; and by every philosopher who desires, as he must, to keep himself in contact with the thoughts of science. It is a work not only of the first importance but also of great beauty. Apart from the vivid writing, the reader's delight arises from two sources: in the first place, from the rapid characterisation of the various epochs into which Prof. Whitehead divides the history of modern scientific thought; and secondly, from his method of pointing out in each epoch just how the central thought of the epoch bears, in the way of contribution or of defect, upon the central thought of the present as the author conceives it. The poet prefiguring him wrote: ‘ and as he works, the industrious bee computes his time as well as we.’ One result of this procedure is that while the bulk of each historical chapter is simple and luminous reading, each chapter contains a few pages which demand the closest attention, but work with cumulative preparation towards the dramatic outcome. - Summary by S Alexander
