There are two basic shapes to the story of a life, one illustrated by Adam, the other by Jesus. Which best describes your life?

The Aerospace Mechanisms Symposium (AMS) provides a unique forum for those active in the design, production and use of aerospace mechanisms. A major focus is the reporting of problems and solutions associated with the development and flight certification of new mechanisms. Sponsored and organized by the Mechanisms Education Association, responsibility for hosting the AMS is shared by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC). Now in its 43rd symposium, the AMS continues to be well attended, attracting participants from both the U.S. and abroad. The 43rd AMS was held in Santa Clara, California on May 4, 5 and 6, 2016. During these three days, 42 papers were presented. Topics included payload and positioning mechanisms, components such as hinges and motors, CubeSats, tribology, and mechanism testing. Hardware displays during the supplier exhibit gave attendees an opportunity to meet with developers of current and future mechanism components. The high quality of this symposium is a result of the work of many people, and their efforts are gratefully acknowledged. This extends to the voluntary members of the symposium organizing committee representing the eight NASA field centers, LMSSC, and the European Space Agency. Epistemically suspect beliefs (ESB), such as conspiracy theories, paranormal beliefs, and pseudoscientific claims, are defined as views lacking credible evidence (Šrol, 2019). As these beliefs are intercorrelated (Lobato et al., 2014), we can, to some extent, draw upon research that examines them separately. Threatening life events (TLE), such as illness or loss, have been associated with increased perceived stress (PS), and both factors are associated with stronger endorsement of conspiracy beliefs (Swami et al., 2016). This aligns with the Existential Threat Model (van Prooijen, 2019), which suggests that such beliefs arise in response to distressing events, anxiety, and uncertainty. Uncertainty may be understood through Rotter’s (1966) locus of control (LOC), with evidence that negative life events predict a shift toward external LOC (E-LOC; Hovenkamp-Hermelink et al., 2019; Mallary, 2020). Similarly, individuals high in negative emotionality (NE) perceive events as more stressful and uncontrollable (Ringwald et al., 2024), which corresponds with findings linking E-LOC to neuroticism and elevated stress (Horner, 1966). These patterns raise the question of whether and to what extent PS and E-LOC contribute to ESB in broader terms. Supporting this, paranormal and pseudoscientific beliefs correlate with E-LOC (Wilson, 2018), while PS remains a factor in conspiracy belief endorsement (Williams et al., 2022). Based on this, we propose a model in which TLE are associated with endorsement of ESB (i.e., specifically conspiracy, paranormal, and pseudoscientific beliefs). We explore the mediating roles of PS and E-LOC, as well as whether these relationships are moderated by levels of NE. Control variables such as religiosity and spirituality, age, socioeconomic status, education, and cognitive reflection are also included. The aim is to better understand the psychological mechanisms underlying these belief systems and to contribute knowledge that may help support individuals in difficult life situations without turning to potentially harmful beliefs for comfort.

Abstract Key physical concepts, relevant for the cross-fertilization between condensed matter physics and the physics of life seen as a collective phenomenon in a system out-of-equilibrium, are discussed. The onset of life can be driven by: (a) the critical fluctuations at the protonic percolation threshold in membrane transport; (b) the stochastic resonance in biological systems, a mechanism that can exploit external and self-generated noise in order to gain efficiency in signal processing; and (c) the shape resonance (or Fano resonance or Feshbach resonance) in the association and dissociation processes of bio-molecules (a quantum mechanism that could play a key role to establish a macroscopic quantum coherence in the cell).

Rat gut is immature at birth, and high intestinal GC sensitivity during the first two weeks of life resembles that of premature infants. This makes suckling rats a model to investigate postpartum impact of maternal separation (MS)-associated GC release in preterm babies, and whether GC sensitivity may shape MS effects in immature gut. A 4 hours-MS applied once at postnatal day (PND)10 enhanced plasma corticosterone in male and female pups, increased by two times the total in vivo intestinal permeability (IP) to oral FITC-Dextran 4 kDa (FD4) immediately after the end of MS, and induced bacterial translocation (BT) to liver and spleen. Ussing chamber experiments demonstrated a 2-fold increase of permeability to FD4 in the colon immediately after the end of MS, but not in the ileum. Colonic permeability was not only increased for FD4 but also to intact horseradish peroxidase 44 kDa in MS pups. In vivo, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonist RU486 or ML7 blockade of myosin light chain kinase controlling epithelial cytoskeleton contraction prevented MS-induced IP increase to oral FD4 and BT. In addition, the GR agonist dexamethasone dose-dependently mimicked MS-increase of IP to oral FD4. In contrast, MS effects on IP to oral FD4 and BT were absent at PND20, a model for full-term infant, characterized by a marked drop of IP to FD4 in response to dexamethasone, and decreased GR expression in the colon only compared to PND10 pups. These results show that high intestinal GC responsiveness in a rat model of prematurity defines a vulnerable window for a post-delivery MS, evoking immediate disruption of epithelial integrity in the large intestine, and increasing susceptibility to macromolecule passage and bacteremia.
