In the past decade, increasing attention has been paid to the issue of gender equity in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The research for this report, led by Yasmin Kafai and a team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, was guided by several overarching questions: (1) What types of projects have been funded within and across the various STEM disciplines? (2) Are there areas where efforts been concentrated, and areas that have been overlooked? (3) What patterns emerge among the project types and disciplines? The findings document impressive efforts in preparing girls and women for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics studies and careers and demonstrate a rich and diverse body of gender equity intervention projects within all STEM disciplines. About two-thirds of the projects involved extracurricular informal learning activities such as museum visits and field trips. Equally important were mentoring activities in many forms, ranging from traditional one-to-one to large-scale online versions, and professional development activities, such as course taking and network building, that were successfully integrated into projects. At the same time, the findings reveal some troubling trends. Many projects focused predominantly on career advice without providing access to necessary skill and content development. A majority of projects occurred outside the school curriculum. While such extracurricular projects can be effective and valuable, the overall lack of integration into the school curriculum suggests that gender equity remains on the margins of teaching and learning in the STEM fields. Finally, an absence of data on participant demographics and a lack of project evaluation make it difficult to determine who is being served and if and how project outcomes are being measured. Perhaps most notably, the findings reveal hundreds of excellent and dynamic projects but no consolidated collective strategy to advance gender equity in STEM. The recommendations in this report reflect this problem, suggesting among others the need for more integrated efforts inside and outside of school, more interdisciplinary and cross-age connections, and consistent documentation and evaluation across disciplines and project types. Acquiring a spinning disk confocal microscope has revolutionized the instructional training and research capabilities that faculty at HowardUniversity and other local Colleges and Universities can perform. This technology now allow us to observe very rapid biological events andprovide a new level of both spatial and temporal investigation into our imaging capabilities with the final result being a dramatic enhancement in our instructional and research abilities. Researchers across the University, in the Department of Biology and within the School of Engineering and College of Medicine, have benefited from the acquisition of this technology and are utilizing the microscope every day for the individual research pursuits. In addition, this state-of-the-art imaging system has begun to be incorporated into the course offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels starting the 2014-2015 academic year. The instrument has also been utilized by Trinity University faculty to educate their students. By instructing undergraduate students on a state-of-the-art microscope such as the spinning disk, we will strengthen our discipline and improve the training of these students in the STEM fields.

A localized and strong RF magnetic field, created by a magnetic write head, is used to examine the linear electrodynamic properties of a Nb superconducting film. The complex reflection coefficient of the write head held in close proximity to the films is measured as a function of sample temperature. A model combining a magnetic circuit (magnetic write head inductively coupled to the sample) and transmission line (microwave circuit) is given to interpret the linear response measurement. Additionally, this reflection linear response measurement can be used to determine the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth on a variety of superconductors.

We report the development of a new tool to determine the origin of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in accretion disk systems. The technique uses the source energy spectrum and the energy dependence of the QPO fractional amplitude to restrict the location of the emission region of the modulated photons, which are assumed to originate in the inner accretion disk. Both Monte Carlo and semi-analytical methods are presented. We assume the accretion disk is enshrouded by a slab atmosphere of hot electrons in which unsaturated Compton scattering produces the high-energy spectrum. Properties of the atmosphere, in particular the electron temperature, are assumed functions of radius from the central compact object. We show that our model reproduces the observed energy dependence of the fractional amplitude of the 67 Hz QPO in GRS 1915+105 if the QPO is assumed to originate within five gravitational radii from the innermost stable circular orbit.

The Light Microscopy Module (LMM) is planned as a fully remotely controllable on-orbit microscope subrack facility, allowing flexible scheduling and control of fluids and biology experiments within NASA Glenn Research Center's Fluids and Combustion Facility on the International Space Station. Within the Fluids and Combustion Facility, four fluids physics experiments will utilize an instrument built around a light microscope. These experiments are the Constrained Vapor Bubble experiment (Peter C. Wayner of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), the Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment-2 (Paul M. Chaikin of Princeton University), the Physics of Colloids in Space-2 experiment (David A. Weitz of Harvard University), and the Low Volume Fraction Colloidal Assembly experiment (Arjun G. Yodh of the University of Pennsylvania). The first experiment investigates heat conductance in microgravity as a function of liquid volume and heat flow rate to determine, in detail, the transport process characteristics in a curved liquid film. The other three experiments investigate various complementary aspects of the nucleation, growth, structure, and properties of colloidal crystals in microgravity and the effects of micromanipulation upon their properties. Key diagnostic capabilities for meeting the science requirements of the four experiments include video microscopy to observe sample features including basic structures and dynamics, interferometry to measure vapor bubble thin film thickness, laser tweezers for colloidal particle manipulation and patterning, confocal microscopy to provide enhanced three-dimensional visualization of colloidal structures, and spectrophotometry to measure colloidal crystal photonic properties.

During the period of debate over the ratification of the Constitution, numerous independent local speeches and articles were published all across the country. Initially, many of the articles in opposition were written under pseudonyms, such as "Brutus", "Centinel", and "Federal Farmer". Eventually, famous revolutionary figures such as Patrick Henry came out publicly against the Constitution. They argued that the strong national government proposed by the Federalists was a threat to the rights of individuals and that the President would become a king. They objected to the federal court system created by the proposed constitution.
