This article is from Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology , volume 5 . Abstract Amplitude-modulation atomic force microscopy (AM-AFM) is used to determine the retention properties of CaF2 nanoparticles adsorbed on mica and on tooth enamel in liquid. From the phase-lag of the forced cantilever oscillation the local energy dissipation at the detachment point of the nanoparticle was determined. This enabled us to compare different as-synthesized CaF2 nanoparticles that vary in shape, size and surface structure. CaF2 nanoparticles are candidates for additives in dental care products as they could serve as fluorine-releasing containers preventing caries during a cariogenic acid attack on the teeth. We show that the adherence of the nanoparticles is increased on the enamel substrate compared to mica, independently of the substrate roughness, morphology and size of the particles.

In this thesis, I present experiments on making and probing strongly correlated gases of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice with engineered potentials and dynamics. The quantum gas microscope first developed in our lab enables single-site resolution imaging and manipulation of atoms in a two-dimensional lattice, offering an ideal platform for quantum simulation of condensed matter systems. Here we demonstrate our abilities to generate optical potential with high precision and high resolution, and engineer coherent dynamics using photon assisted tunneling. We also create a system of bilayer quantum gases that brings new imaging capabilities and extends the possible range of our quantum simulation. To engineer precise optical potentials, we tackle uncontrolled disorder using in- coherent light sources and Fourier filtering of lattice beams. We develop a spatially incoherent light source which suppresses disorder caused by defects and scattering in the imaging system. Digital micro-mirror devices are used as spatial light modulators to shape arbitrary potentials with single site resolution. Next we study photon-assisted tunneling as an example of driven coherent dynamics. We observe sharp, interaction-shifted photon-assisted tunneling resonances, and resolve the multi-orbital shifts. Using photon-assisted tunneling, we drive a quantum phase transition between a paramagnet and an anti-ferromagnet, and observe quench dynamics at a critical point. We prepare tunnel-coupled bilayer systems, and use interaction blockade to engineer occupation-dependent inter-plane transport. The site resolved imaging of the bilayer system allows us to circumvent the limitations of parity imaging to directly observe the Mott insulator \wedding cake structure and density ordering in the anti-ferromagnetic state, and to perform spin-resolved readout of a hyperfine mixture.

The 1974-75 school year marked the fifth year of operation for the Division of Instructional Development at Utah State University. The model for Instructional Development (ID) consists of four parts: (1) developing faculty awareness; (2) capitalizing on faculty initiative, primarily through small-scale funding under a program of minigrants; (3) conducting faculty support activities where participating faculty members are released full-time for one quarter to work intensively on a project of their own choosing; and (4) working with an entire department to revise particularly important steps in the curriculum for its graduates. Through a series of survey techniques and interviews, this study gathers data about the program as perceived by faculty members. The conclusions are that there is considerable awareness of the ID programs across campus; that ID should not move entirely from individual-centered to department-centered activities; and that the program is generally held in high regard by USU faculty. The effects of heat treatment and ambient atmospheres on the stress- corrosion cracking behavior of U-10 w/o Mo were investigated using a field- emission microscope of cylindrical geometry. Cathodic protection and the effect of static electric DC fields were investigated as possible protective techniques in the stress-corrosion cracking of U-10 w/o Mo. A special 'gas shield' protective technique was also investigated. The stress-corrosion cracking behavior of U-10 w/o Mo was found to be influenced by heat treatments. A gamma homogenization and quench followed by a tempering treatment were found to be most beneficial in reducing the susceptibility of the alloy. A tentative 'critical stress' for initiation of stress-corrosion cracking was set at 36,500 psi. This critical stress was found to be strongly dependent upon heat treatments and internal structure. Cathodic protection and electric fields had no effect on the stress-corrosion cracking behavior of U-10 w/o Mo. Pure, dry nitrogen on the other hand, was found to be most effective as a protective shield during cyclic loading of U-10 w/o Mo specimens.

During the period of debate over the ratification of the Constitution, numerous independent local speeches and articles were published all across the country. Initially, many of the articles in opposition were written under pseudonyms, such as "Brutus", "Centinel", and "Federal Farmer".
