5SUSY Interpretation Of The Egret GeV Anomaly, Xenon-10 Dark Matter Search Limits And The LHC

By

The observation of the Egret experiment of an excess of diffuse gamma rays with energies above E_\gamma =1 GeV has previously been interpreted in the context of the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA) as coming from neutralino annihilation into mainly b-quarks in the galactic halo, with neutralino mass in the vicinity of 50-70 GeV. We observe that in order to obtain the correct relic abundance of neutralinos in accord with WMAP measurements, the corresponding neutralino-proton direct detection (DD) rates should be in excess of recent limits from the Xenon-10 collaboration. While it does not appear possible to satisfy the Egret, WMAP and Xenon-10 constraints simultaneously within the mSUGRA model, we find that it is easily possible in models with non-universal Higgs soft masses (NUHM). In either case, gluino pair production from m(gluino)\sim 400-500 GeV should occur at large rates at the CERN LHC, and a gluino pair production signal should be visible with just 0.1 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The NUHM interpretation predicts a rather light spectrum of heavy Higgs bosons with m_A\sim 140-200 GeV over the whole parameter space which would interpret Egret data. Spin-independent DD rates are predicted to be just above 10^{-8} pb, within range of the next round of direct dark matter detection experiments.

7Interpretation Of Neutrino Flux Limits From Neutrino Telescopes On The Hillas Plot

By

We discuss the interplay between spectral shape and detector response beyond a simple E^-2 neutrino flux at neutrino telescopes, at the example of time-integrated point source searches using IceCube-40 data. We use a self-consistent model for the neutrino production, in which protons interact with synchrotron photons from co-accelerated electrons, and we fully take into account the relevant pion and kaon production modes, the flavor composition at the source, flavor mixing, and magnetic field effects on the secondaries (pions, muon, and kaons). Since some of the model parameters can be related to the Hillas parameters R (size of the acceleration region) and B (magnetic field), we relate the detector response to the Hillas plane. In order to compare the response to different spectral shapes, we use the energy flux density as a measure for the pion production efficiency times luminosity of the source. We demonstrate that IceCube has a very good reach in this quantity for AGN nuclei and jets for all source declinations, while the spectra of sources with strong magnetic fields are found outside the optimal reach. We also demonstrate where neutrinos from kaon decays and muon tracks from tau decays can be relevant for the detector response. Finally, we point out the complementarity between IceCube and other experiments sensitive to high-energy neutrinos, at the example of 2004-2008 Earth-skimming neutrino data from Auger. We illustrate that Auger, in principle, is better sensitive to the parameter region in the Hillas plane from which the highest-energetic cosmic rays may be expected in this model.

9ERIC ED395009: The Computation, Interpretation, And Limits Of Grade Equivalent Scores.

By

Grade-equivalent scores are widely used in the school system in reporting students' performance on standardized achievement tests. This paper explores how grade equivalent scores are calculated and interpreted. In addition, the paper examines the limitations of grade-equivalent scores through the use of small heuristic data sets. A grade-equivalent score is a score indicating the grade level at which this score is the mean performance level. They are created by administering a test to students in various grades. Typically, a test being normed is administered to large groups of students in each of several successive grade levels at different times of the year. Grade norms have several limitations and are often misinterpreted. It must be noted that when grade-equivalent scores are derived, it does not mean that the test was given to all grades or to children at all different points on a grade's continuum. Grade-equivalent scores reported beyond tested grade limits can be misleading. In addition, grade-equivalent scores obtained from tests produced by different publishers often give conflicting results. A further limitation is that grade-equivalent scores should not be used to make comparisons of the grade-equivalent performances of an individual across different subjects. Other incorrect interpretations are reviewed. (Contains one table, three figures, and nine references.) (SLD)

13Systematics In The Interpretation Of Aggregated Neutrino Flux Limits And Flavor Ratios From Gamma-Ray Bursts

By

Gamma-ray burst analyses at neutrino telescopes are typically based on diffuse or stacked (i.e., aggregated) neutrino fluxes, because the number of events expected from a single burst is small. The interpretation of aggregated flux limits implies new systematics not present for a single burst, such as by the integration over parameter distributions (diffuse fluxes), or by the low statistics in small burst samples (stacked fluxes). We simulate parameter distributions with a Monte Carlo method computing the spectra burst by burst, as compared to a conventional Monte Carlo integration. With this approach, we can predict the behavior of the flux in the diffuse limit as well as in low statistics stacking samples, such as used in recent IceCube data analyses. We also include the flavor composition at the detector (ratio between muon tracks and cascades) into our considerations. We demonstrate that the spectral features, such as a characteristic multi-peak structure coming from photohadronic interactions, flavor mixing, and magnetic field effects, are typically present even in diffuse neutrino fluxes if only the redshift distribution of the sources is considered, with z \simeq 1 dominating the neutrino flux. On the other hand, we show that variations of the Lorentz boost can only be interpreted in a model-dependent way, and can be used as a model discriminator. For example, we illustrate that the observation of spectral features in aggregated fluxes will disfavor the commonly used assumption that bursts with small Lorentz factors dominate the neutrino flux, whereas it will be consistent with the hypothesis that the bursts have similar properties in the comoving frame.
