Brief No. 15 This Brief Is One In A Series Aimed At Providing K-12 Education Decision Makers And Advocates With An Evidence Base To Ground Discussions About How To Best Serve Students During And Following The Novel Coronavirus Pandemic. This brief is one in a series aimed at providing K-12 education decision makers and advocates with an evidence base to ground discussions about how to best serve students during and following the novel coronavirus pandemic. It addresses one central question: Recognizing longstanding educational inequities, what research-backed practices can district administrators, school leaders, and classroom teachers use to support English Learner (EL) students' academic success and linguistic development in an instructional context transformed by COVID-19? In order to answer this question, the brief breaks down the issue into three points: (1) EL students are a rapidly growing and diverse population entitled to English language development instruction that will allow meaningful access to academic content; (2) Complex federal laws govern the education of EL students and continue to hold state and local education agencies accountable for their academic performance even during the pandemic; and (3) School leader and teacher training rarely provides sufficient support for how to meet the unique needs of EL students. Based on these points, the brief provides five strategies to consider and two strategies to avoid. [This brief was co-prepared by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the University of Texas at Austin, College of Education.]

3ERIC ED300979: Sociocultural Issues In The Assessment And Classroom Teaching Of Language Minority Students. Crosscultural Special Education Series, Volume 3.
By ERIC
This guide examines problems in the assessment, evaluation, and teaching of language minority children who come from diverse sociocultural backgrounds. School systems must find valid means to assess linguistic minority students and must offer instructional approaches that can facilitate growth and development. General guidelines for assessment include understanding the referral question, selecting assessment tools based upon reliability and validity, using caution in interpreting test results, employing more than one measure, and avoiding inferences not warranted by the tests. The guidelines are applicable when using such assessment tools as observations, interviews, objective personality inventories, or projectives. Sociocultural influences are likely to have a major impact on the student's performance on intellectual assessment, on evaluations of learning disabilities, and on the measurement of socioemotional adjustment. Care must be taken so that assessment procedures accurately measure the characteristic of interest rather than sociocultural factors. Teachers can provide an educational atmosphere that enhances the growth and development of all students by understanding their own as well as their students' cultural backgrounds, by incorporating ethnically diverse teaching materials in class, and by helping parents to become actively involved in the education of their children. References are included. (JDD)

4Boy's Will
By Robert Frost
A Boy's Will is Robert Frost's first full volume of poetry. Issued when Frost was approaching forty, it established his reputation and created a revolution in American poetry. With this publication, Frost became an established poet. He later became the major American poet of the twentieth century.
A Boy's Will is characteristic of Frost's ability to conjure photographically clear physical images while ruminating on the complexities of the human condition, its frailties and strengths, and its temporal state, like that of his beloved New England landscape. 7In Kent with Charles Dickens
By Thomas Frost
By his own admission, Thomas Frost found it hard to make a living from his writing, and no doubt he used the name of Dickens in the title of this book to boost sales. Frost tells a good tale, and the book is not only of interest to enthusiasts of Dickens and the county of Kent.

He includes some of Dickens' own descriptions of locations, as well as regaling us with anecdotes about towns and villages which he visits, including an account of the last armed rising on British soil - the Battle of Bossenden Wood.

As well as accounts of his travels through the highways and byways of Kent in the footsteps of Dickens and his characters, he also wanders into the lanes of myth and legend, sometimes making up his own stories along the way.

After managing to forgive his cardinal sin of confusing Men of Kent and Kentish Men in the first chapter, I found this rather odd mixture of memoir, short stories and literary travelogue a most enjoyable read. 11American Egypt
By Channing Arnold and Frederick J. Tabor Frost

Arnold and Frost were English archaeologists who traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula and wrote "the first book ever written by Englishmen on Yucatan—that Egypt of the New World, where, it is now generally admitted, Central American Civilisation reached its apogee—and to be, for the present at least, the only Englishmen who can claim to have explored the uncivilised north-eastern portions of the Peninsula and the islands of her eastern coast." Their studies brought them to the conclusion, contrary to the bulk of the body of other contemporary experts, "that America's first architects were Buddhist immigrants from Java and Indo-China." 14Mountain Interval (version 2)
By Robert Frost

Mountain Interval is a 1916 poetry collection written by American writer Robert Frost. It is Frost's third poetic volume and was published by Henry Holt. It was republished in 1920. Frost made several alterations in the sequencing of the collection and released a new edition in 1921. Five lyrics of the earlier collection were compiled next under the title "His Wife". In this volume only three poems are written in dramatic monologue. Summary by Wikipedia

15Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost
LibriVox volunteers bring you 23 recordings of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost.
This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 6, 2019.
------
The meanings of this poignant poem--which entered the Public Domain in January 2019 and is being added to the Librivox Collection ASAP--range from appreciation of a simple New Hampshire snowstorm scene to reflections on death. Whose house is in the village? What promises need keeping? The poem can be interpreted on many different levels. Quoting Wikipedia: "At the funeral of former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau, on October 3, 2000, his eldest son Justin rephrased the last stanza of this poem in his eulogy: 'The woods are lovely, dark and deep. He has kept his promises and earned his sleep.'" ( ~ Michele Fry)

18West-Running Brook
By Robert Frost
A collection of 38 of Robert Frost's early poems apparently compiled in 1923 but not published until 1928. This was not Frost's most popular release, perhaps, but poet and literary critic Louis Untermeyer was clearly enthusiastic about this book upon its release, which includes Frost's well-known 'Acquainted with the Night.' The poems are divided into 6 categories: Spring Pools (11), Fiat Nox (10), West-Running Brook (1), Sand Dunes (6), Over Back (4), and My Native Simile (7). ~Summary by KevinS
