Teachers, other adults, and students responded with the names of two persons who have made the greatest contribution to the United States, one president who has made the greatest contribution to the United States, and two areas that have made the greatest contribution to human endeavor from among business, education, exploration, government, labor, medicine, religion and/or philosophy, science and/or invention, sports, writing, and the fine arts. Students were also asked to note their favorite school subject. Among all respondents governmental leaders predominated in both categories of contributing persons. Science, however, was the area of human endeavor most often cited with education second -- except among students, where education was third and government second. The results may point to a need for rethinking not only what historical figures to include in the social studies but also what areas of human endeavor. (JH)

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Background: The significance of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations for hip fracture risk of the elderly is still uncertain. Difficulties reaching both frail and healthy elderly people in randomized controlled trials or large cohort studies may in part explain discordant findings. We determined hazard ratios for hip fractures of elderly men and women related to serum 25(OH)D, including both the frail and the healthy segment of the elderly population. Methods: The AGES-Reykjavik Study is a prospective study of 5764 men and women, age 66–96 years, based on a representative sample of the population of Reykjavik, Iceland. Participation was 71.8%. Hazard ratios of incident hip fractures and baseline bone mineral density were determined according to serum concentrations of 25(OH)D at baseline. Results: Mean follow-up was 5.4 years. Compared with referent values (50–75 nmol/L), hazard ratios for hip fractures were 2.24 (95% CI 1.63, 3.09) for serum 25(OH)D

We report the first planet discovery from the two-wheeled Kepler (K2) mission: HIP 116454 b. The host star HIP 116454 is a bright (V = 10.1, K = 8.0) K1-dwarf with high proper motion, and a parallax-based distance of 55.2 +/- 5.4 pc. Based on high-resolution optical spectroscopy, we find that the host star is metal-poor with [Fe/H] = -.16 +/- .18, and has a radius R = 0.716 +/- .0024 R_sun and mass M = .775 +/- .027 Msun. The star was observed by the Kepler spacecraft during its Two-Wheeled Concept Engineering Test in February 2014. During the 9 days of observations, K2 observed a single transit event. Using a new K2 photometric analysis technique we are able to correct small telescope drifts and recover the observed transit at high confidence, corresponding to a planetary radius of Rp = 2.53 +/- 0.18 Rearth. Radial velocity observations with the HARPS-N spectrograph reveal a 11.82 +/- 1.33 Mearth planet in a 9.1 day orbit, consistent with the transit depth, duration, and ephemeris. Follow-up photometric measurements from the MOST satellite confirm the transit observed in the K2 photometry and provide a refined ephemeris, making HIP 116454 b amenable for future follow-up observations of this latest addition to the growing population of transiting super-Earths around nearby, bright stars.

We report the detection of four new extrasolar planets in orbit around the moderately active stars HD 63765, HD 104067, HIP 70849, and HD 125595 with the HARPS Echelle spectrograph mounted on the ESO 3.6-m telescope at La Silla. The first planet, HD 63765 b, has a minimum mass of 0.64MJup, a period of 358 days, and an eccentricity of 0.24. It orbits a G9 dwarf at 0.94 AU. The second planet, HD 104067 b, is a 3.6 Neptune-mass-planet with a 55.8-day-period. It orbits its parent K2 dwarf, in a circular orbit with a semi-major axis of a=0.26 AU. Radial velocity measurements present a \approx 500-day-oscillation that reveals significant magnetic cycles.
