1ERIC ED415011: Postpartum Depression: Is It A Condition Affecting The Mother-Infant Interaction And The Development Of The Child Across The First Year Of Life?

By

Noting that maternal depression is common during a baby's first year, this study examined the interaction of depressed and non-depressed mother-child dyads. A sample of 26 first-time mothers with postpartum depression at the third month after birth and their 3-month-old infants was compared to a sample of 25 first-time mothers with no postpartum depression at the third month after birth and their 3-month-old infants. The observations were repeated at 6 months and again at 12 months postpartum. The samples were compared for differences in mother interaction behavior, mother's infant care, mother's concern with the baby, infant behavioral difficulties, infant mental and motor development, and infant behavior with the observer. Among the findings are the following: (1) depressed mothers' interaction behavior and care of their infants are less adequate than the non-depressed mothers' interaction behavior and care of their infants at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (2) infants' interaction behaviors during feeding and face-to-face interaction with depressed mothers are less adequate than infants' interactions with non-depressed mothers at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (3) mother-infant interactions are less adequate in the depressed mother dyads than the non-depressed dyads at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (4) depressed mothers are less concerned about their infants than non-depressed mothers at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum; (5) infants of depressed mothers have more behavioral difficulties at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum than infants of non-depressed mothers; (6) infants of depressed mothers had lower mental and motor development rates at 6 and 12 months postpartum than infants of non-depressed mothers; and (7) infants of non-depressed mothers behaved in a more positive way with the observer than the infants of depressed mothers. 6ERIC ED020276: GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEGRO INFANTS. IX, STUDIES ON WEIGHT, HEIGHT, PELVIC BREADTH, HEAD AND CHEST CIRCUMFERENCES DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF LIFE.

By

THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS SIZE AND GROWTH VELOCITY DATA COLLECTED DURING A LONGITUDINAL STUDY OF 111 NORMAL, HEALTHY NEGRO INFANTS FROM LOWER-MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILIES. DATA WERE OBTAINED FROM BIRTH RECORDS AND MEASUREMENTS TAKEN DURING ROUTINE PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS. WHEN THIS NEGRO SAMPLE WAS COMPARED WITH WHITE INFANTS IN SIMILAR STUDIES IT WAS FOUND THAT, IN GENERAL, PELVIC BREADTH AND HEAD AND CHEST CIRCUMFERENCE WERE SLIGHTLY LARGER AMONG WHITES. GROWTH VELOCITIES WERE ALSO HIGHER AMONG WHITES, AND GROWTH IN PELVIC BREADTH DECELERATED MORE RAPIDLY AMONG WHITES. HOWEVER, NO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BY RACE WAS FOUND. ON THE WHOLE, MALES OF BOTH RACES WERE LARGER THAN FEMALES, AND THEIR GROWTH RATE ALSO DECELERATED MORE RAPIDLY. THE FINDINGS ARE PRESENTED IN TABLES AND GRAPHS. THIS ARTICLE IS A REPRINT FROM "PEDIATRICS," VOLUME 29, NUMBER 1, JANUARY 1962. (NH)

13I Was So Honored To Spend Time With Rahaf From Gaza. Rahaf Is A 3-year-old Double Amputee Who Lost Her Legs In An Airstrike. She’s Absolutely Adorable And The Most Loving, Smart, Playful Little Girl.🥹💕 I Am So Thankful To @The PCRF For Facilitating Her Medical Evacuation. They Are My Heroes! I Will Link To Them In My Bio. When I Saw Pictures Of Rahaf In Gaza On The Hospital Floor, I Saw The Devastating Consequences Of Endless Bombing And Continuous Violations Of Children’s Human Rights. Rahaf Is Now Thriving Because She Has Access To Medical Care, Food, Water And A Safe Place To Live. It’s So Clear What We Need To Give Children So They Can Grow Up Into Healthy, Happy Adults. I Was Also Honored To Spend Time With Rahaf’s Wonderful Mom, Israa. She Is A Teacher As Well. We FaceTimed With Rahaf’s Two Adorable, Young Brothers Who Are Still Gaza With Their Dad. I Watched Her Look At Them Proudly, Like I Look At My Son. I Imagined Myself Holding Up The Phone In The US With My Daughter, Now A Double Amputee From An Airstrike, Away From My Son And Husband In Gaza, Unable To Help Them - Unable To Feed Them And Keep Them Safe. Israa And Rahaf Don’t Eat In Front Of The Boys Anymore On FaceTime Because There’s So Little Food There. Israa And I Both Love Our Children With All Of Our Hearts. We’re Both Teachers Who Know What Kids Need To Thrive. We Want The Same Things For Our Sweet Babies. But My Son Will Have Dinner Tonight, A Story And Snuggle With Me, School In The Morning And Hers Won’t. It’s So Clear What Needs To Be Done For Kids In Gaza By The Global Community. We Know Treating Children Like They Are Being Treated In Gaza Isn’t Right Morally And Ethically. We Know It In Our Souls And Hearts. It Doesn’t Align With The Teachings Of Our Religions. We Also Have So Much Research On Brain Development That Shows How Trauma And Malnutrition During The First Three Years Of Life Can Have Life Long Consequences. Leaders Who Are Silent And Not Helping These Children, You Should Be Ashamed. Your Silence Will Be Remembered. Help My Friends, Like Sweet Rahaf, Now. I was so honored to spend time with Rahaf from Gaza. Proud to be married to Mr Aron, who brought her so much joy and so many giggles! #gaza #msrachel

28Separating Acoustic Deviance From Novelty During The First Year Of Life: A Review Of Event-related Potential Evidence.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Psychology , volume 4 . Abstract Orienting to salient events in the environment is a first step in the development of attention in young infants. Electrophysiological studies have indicated that in newborns and young infants, sounds with widely distributed spectral energy, such as noise and various environmental sounds, as well as sounds widely deviating from their context elicit an event-related potential (ERP) similar to the adult P3a response. We discuss how the maturation of event-related potentials parallels the process of the development of passive auditory attention during the first year of life. Behavioral studies have indicated that the neonatal orientation to high-energy stimuli gradually changes to attending to genuine novelty and other significant events by approximately 9 months of age. In accordance with these changes, in newborns, the ERP response to large acoustic deviance is dramatically larger than that to small and moderate deviations. This ERP difference, however, rapidly decreases within first months of life and the differentiation of the ERP response to genuine novelty from that to spectrally rich but repeatedly presented sounds commences during the same period. The relative decrease of the response amplitudes elicited by high-energy stimuli may reflect development of an inhibitory brain network suppressing the processing of uninformative stimuli. Based on data obtained from healthy full-term and pre-term infants as well as from infants at risk for various developmental problems, we suggest that the electrophysiological indices of the processing of acoustic and contextual deviance may be indicative of the functioning of auditory attention, a crucial prerequisite of learning and language development.

35ERIC ED444639: Mapping The Realities Of First Year Post-Secondary Life: A Study Of Students At Three Post-Secondary Institutions.

By

This study examined the first-year postsecondary experiences of students through an action research project with small groups of students at three postsecondary institutions (one community college, one university college, and one university). The paper reviews the action research design method and highlights its utility in analyzing the effects of institutional policies, resources, and strategies that facilitated or constrained student success. In the spirit of action research, each student was encouraged to keep a weekly journal to help him/her reflect on dilemmas. Common issues were discussed in weekly or bi-weekly focus groups where students participated in seeking solutions, offering alternatives, and confirming current strategies. The paper presents data generated from focus groups with students and interviews with personnel at each of the three institutions in this study. The report finds that, despite having in place comprehensive programs and services to assist students with their first year, students at all institutions were either reluctant or unable to access those resources. Second, given the availability of resources, personnel at all institutions assumed students could and would make use of them, even though this was often not so. Finally, the overwhelming feeling experienced by students in all focus groups was one of powerlessness and isolation. The paper concludes with recommendations for practice, policy, and further research. (Contains 54 references.) (VWC)

Bennett has earned the reputation among his colleagues, constituents, and clients as a pragmatic problem-solver who seeks creative and commonsense solutions to their issues. Robert F. Bennett entered the political arena by managing his father's Senatorial reelection campaign 49 years ago, in 1962. Wallace F. Bennett was a U.S. Senator from 1951 to 1974. It was this experience that would later inspire Mr. Bennett to seek public office. In the meantime, he used his strong leadership skills and lessons learned from working as a staffer on Capitol Hill in several successful entrepreneurial pursuits. His greatest triumph in the business world came when he was CEO of Franklin International Institute, now known as Franklin Covey. Mr. Bennett grew the business from 4 employees to more than 1,000, and it was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1992, Mr. Bennett followed in his father's footsteps and ran a successful campaign for the U.S. Senate, carrying his businessman-like approach with him to the Hill. He served as a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee and a member of the distinguished Joint Economic Committee, where he was at the center of national economic policy discussions. He also served as the ranking Republican on the Senate Rules Committee. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Bennett strived to balance fiscal discipline in government while representing the needs of his constituents in the distribution of Federal funds. He also represented the interests of the West as the ranking Republican on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water and a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Senator Bennett was at the forefront of health care reform. He cosponsored the Healthy Americans Act, the first major bipartisan health care legislation in more than a decade. His Healthy Americans Act guaranteed quality, affordable, portable health coverage for every American, cutting health costs by more than .2 trillion over the next decade. Mr. Bennett is a graduate of the University of Utah, where he was student body president. He and his wife Joyce are the proud parents of 6 children and have 20 grandchildren. Farewell to the Senate Thursday, December 9, 2010 Mr. BENNETT. Madam President, there once was a very strong tradition in the Senate that every new Senator gave a maiden speech, and in that tradition some Senators waited as long as a year before they gave the speech. Then, when the time came, the more senior Senators would gather and take notes and then critique the newcomer on how well he did. Life has changed a good deal. I never gave a maiden speech. I plunged right into the debate when I got here. Now the tradition seems to be to give a farewell speech. So I am grateful to my colleagues who will gather for this occasion as I contemplate saying farewell to the Senate. But I will warn them, this is probably not my last speech. I intend to be heavily involved in the debate over whether we pass a continuing resolution or an omnibus bill. I have a history with the Senate, and it began when I was a teenager as a summer intern. I remember sitting in the gallery and watching Bob Taft prowl across the back of the Senate, watching to make sure things were going according to his desire. He had been the majority leader. He had stepped down from that position because of the cancer he had contracted, but he was still paying attention to this body where he served with such distinction. Lyndon Johnson was sprawled out with his lanky frame at the Democratic leader's desk, and I was watching from the gallery, thinking what an extraordinary place this was. Ten years later, I came back as a staffer, and I served here. I was sitting in my cubicle in the Dirksen Building when word came that John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. We didn't know whether he was dead. We all rushed over to the Senate, where there was a ticker tape back in the back lobby, to see what was happening. I rushed in with the others to see what was there and then looked to see whom I had jostled aside in order to get to see the ticker tape. It was Mike Mansfield. I quietly withdrew, realizing I had done something that was not appropriate on that occasion. I was here in Washington when Martin Luther King gave his ''I Have a Dream'' speech. I was here as a staffer when the historic civil rights bill of 1964 was passed and was involved in the drafting of that bill at a very low kind of level and the conflict that occurred on that occasion. Then I came back into government as the head of the congressional relations function for a Cabinet-level department. I worked with Senator Dirksen in trying to pursue the Nixon administration's goals forward and ran into a bright young Senator from Kansas with a sharp wit named Bob Dole. I had the opportunity of working with Dirksen and Dole and the others in that situation. Watergate came along. I was given the dubious honor of being called to testify by a young Senator from Tennessee named Howard Baker. He assigned me to his staffer, who grilled me for 3 hours under oath Date(s) Held: 2010-12-09, 2010-11-30, 2010-12-08, 2010-12-09, 2010-12-10, 2010-12-13 111th Congress, 2nd Session GPO Document Source: CHRG-111shrg64801 Related Items:

39Functional Connectivity In The First Year Of Life In Infants At Risk For Autism Spectrum Disorder: An EEG Study.

By

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract In the field of autism research, recent work has been devoted to studying both behavioral and neural markers that may aide in early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These studies have often tested infants who have a significant family history of autism spectrum disorder, given the increased prevalence observed among such infants. In the present study we tested infants at high- and low-risk for ASD (based on having an older sibling diagnosed with the disorder or not) at 6- and 12-months-of-age. We computed intrahemispheric linear coherence between anterior and posterior sites as a measure of neural functional connectivity derived from electroencephalography while the infants were listening to speech sounds. We found that by 12-months-of-age infants at risk for ASD showed reduced functional connectivity compared to low risk infants. Moreover, by 12-months-of-age infants later diagnosed with ASD showed reduced functional connectivity, compared to both infants at low risk for the disorder and infants at high risk who were not later diagnosed with ASD. Significant differences in functional connectivity were also found between low-risk infants and high-risk infants who did not go onto develop ASD. These results demonstrate that reduced functional connectivity appears to be related to genetic vulnerability for ASD. Moreover, they provide further evidence that ASD is broadly characterized by differences in neural integration that emerge during the first year of life.

44The Impact Of HIV-1 Infection And Exposure On Natural Killer (NK) Cell Phenotype In Kenyan Infants During The First Year Of Life.

By

This article is from Frontiers in Immunology , volume 3 . Abstract Natural killer (NK) cells play an important role in the containment of HIV replication during primary infection, though their functions are impaired during chronic HIV infection. Infants experience more rapid HIV disease progression than adults, but contributions of infant NK cells to containing HIV infection are unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of HIV infection on infant NK cell phenotype by evaluating samples and data from a cohort study of women and their infants, conducted in Nairobi, Kenya between 1999 and 2003. The percentage and phenotype of NK cells was evaluated longitudinally by multi-parameter flow cytometry over the first year of life in HIV-infected (HIV+, = 16), HIV-exposed uninfected (HIV-EU, n = 6), and healthy unexposed controls (HIV–, n = 4). At birth, NK subset distributions based on expression of CD56 and CD16 did not differ between HIV+, HIV-EU, or HIV– infants. However, HIV infection was associated with a subsequent decline in NK cells as a percentage of total lymphocytes (p < 0.001), and an expanding proportion of CD56-CD16+ NK cells (p < 0.001). Activated CD38brightCD69+ NK cells were more frequent in the HIV+ infants, followed by HIV-EU and HIV- infants, in both CD56dim (p = 0.005) and CD56bright compartments (p = 0.03). HIV infection and exposure was also associated with a significant decline in the percentage of perforin-expressing NK cells in the CD56dim compartment over the first year of life, with HIV+ infants losing approximately 2.5% (p < 0.001) and HIV-EU infants losing 3.0% (p = 0.01) of perforin+ cells per month. Thus, infant HIV infection is associated with alterations in NK cell subsets, activation, and cytolytic potential that could contribute to their poor control over HIV infection. Furthermore, exposure to HIV infection in infants who escaped infection is also associated with alterations in NK cells that may contribute to the reduced ability to fight infections that is observed in HIV-EU infants.

45Retrospective Analysis Of The Natural History Of Atopic Dermatitis Occurring In The First Year Of Life In Korean Children.

By

This article is from Journal of Korean Medical Science , volume 27 . Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the natural history of atopic dermatitis (AD) and the risk factors associated with the remission of AD in Korean children. We enrolled 597 children with AD that occurred in the first year of life. A variety of factors influencing the prognosis were assessed by medical records and telephone interviews. Their outcome was classified into complete remission, intermittent, and persistent AD. AD had completely disappeared in 422 cases (70.6%), while 149 (25%) and 26 cases (4.4%) showed intermittent and persistent skin symptoms, respectively. The average healing time was 29.6 months in complete remission group and expected healing time of the AD was 60 months. None of risk factors were significant by multivariate analysis. But, in moderate-to-severe AD group, maternal diet restriction during lactation (P = 0.046) and no sensitization to cow's milk (P = 0.017) were significantly associated with remission of AD in the multivariate analysis. In conclusion, AD occurring in the first year of life disappears in a significant proportion of patients. In addition, in Korean children with moderate-to-severe AD, maternal diet restriction of allergenic food during lactation and sensitization to cow's milk seem to predict the prognosis of AD.

46Infants Fed Formula With Added Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Have Reduced Incidence Of Respiratory Illnesses And Diarrhea During The First Year Of Life.

By

This article is from BMC Pediatrics , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) may influence the immune system. Our objective was to compare the frequency of common illnesses in infants who received formula with or without added LCPUFAs. Methods: In this observational, multi-center, prospective study, infants consumed formula with 17 mg DHA and 34 mg ARA/100 kcal (n = 233) or with no added DHA or ARA (n = 92). Pediatricians recorded respiratory illnesses, otitis media, eczema, and diarrhea through 1 year of age. Results: Infants who consumed formula with DHA/ARA had lower incidence of bronchitis/bronchiolitis (P = 0.004), croup (P = 0.044), nasal congestion (P = 0.001), cough (P = 0.014), and diarrhea requiring medical attention (P = 0.034). The odds ratio (OR) of having at least one episode of bronchitis/bronchiolitis (0.41, 95% CI 0.24, 0.70; P = 0.001), croup (0.23, 95% CI 0.05, 0.97; P = 0.045), nasal congestion (0.37, 95% CI 0.20, 0.66; P = 0.001), cough (0.52, 95% CI 0.32, 0.86; P = 0.011), and diarrhea requiring medical attention (0.51, 95% CI 0.28, 0.92; P = 0.026) was lower in infants fed DHA/ARA. The OR of an increased number of episodes of bronchitis/bronchiolitis, croup, nasal congestion, cough, and diarrhea, as well as the hazard ratio for shorter time to first episode of bronchitis/bronchiolitis, nasal congestion, cough, and diarrhea were also significantly lower in the DHA/ARA group. Conclusions: In healthy infants, formula with DHA/ARA was associated with lower incidence of common respiratory symptoms and illnesses, as well as diarrhea.

47Iron Stores Of Breastfed Infants During The First Year Of Life.

By

This article is from Nutrients , volume 6 . Abstract The birth iron endowment provides iron for growth in the first months of life. We describe the iron endowment under conditions of low dietary iron supply. Subjects were infants participating in a trial of Vitamin D supplementation from 1 to 9 months. Infants were exclusively breastfed at enrollment but could receive complementary foods from 4 months but not formula. Plasma ferritin (PF) and transferrin receptor (TfR) were determined at 1, 2, 4, 5.5, 7.5, 9 and 12 months. At 1 month PF ranged from 38 to 752 µg/L and was only weakly related to maternal PF. PF declined subsequently and flattened out at 5.5 months. PF of females was significantly higher than PF of males except at 12 months. TfR increased with age and was inversely correlated with PF. PF and TfR tracked strongly until 9 months. Iron deficiency (PF < 10 µg/L) began to appear at 4 months and increased in frequency until 9 months. Infants with ID were born with low iron endowment. We concluded that the birth iron endowment is highly variable in size and a small endowment places infants at risk of iron deficiency before 6 months. Boys have smaller iron endowments and are at greater risk of iron deficiency than girls.

49ERIC ED127015: Development Of Attachment To Caregivers In An Infant Nursery During The First Year Of Life.

By

This longitudinal study of 10 infants in a day care nursery traces the development of recognition and attachment to a primary caregiver from approximately 3 1/2 months of age (shortly after enrollment in the program) through the end of the first year. Monthly assessments of about 10 minutes each, on two successive days, were made of the infant's recognition of and attachment to their primary caregivers. Examined were infant responses to the approach of the caregiver as compared to the approach of a stranger, responses to the mother's departure when the infant was left with the caregiver as compared to being left with a stranger, and the infant's response to being left with a stranger by the caregiver as compared to being left with a stranger by the mother. Results indicate that: (1) as the child grows, the response to a stranger becomes increasingly less positive when compared to response to the caregiver, which remains neutral; (2) infants' response to their mothers leaving them with a stranger show increasing evidence of distress, starting at 7 months and increasing, while infants continue to remain generally comfortable when left with the caregiver; (3) around 6 to 7 months of age, infants show equivalent negative reactions when being left with a stranger by either the mother or the caregiver. A discussion reviews the results in relation to day care services. (SB)
