Phase one included the development, field testing and refining of the instruments for each of the goals, the procedures for collecting data about students, school and community conditions, and computer analytic techniques for determining the relationship of school and community conditions which exist with student performance. Phase two concerned itself with the collection of information stratified from a state representative and phase three is the actual assessment of schools, which is a continuing activity begun in 1970. The assessment findings can be used to provide a focus for examing individual student test results which exist, to measure the effectiveness of curriculum changes and to provide objective data to support request for programs and equipment. This article is from Journal of Visualized Experiments : JoVE . Abstract A simple, validated protocol consisting of a battery of tests is available to identify elderly patients with frailty syndrome. This syndrome of decreased reserve and resistance to stressors increases in incidence with increasing age. In the elderly, frailty may pursue a step-wise loss of function from non-frail to pre-frail to frail. We studied frailty in HIV-infected patients and found that ~20% are frail using the Fried phenotype using stringent criteria developed for the elderly1,2. In HIV infection the syndrome occurs at a younger age.HIV patients were checked for 1) unintentional weight loss; 2) slowness as determined by walking speed; 3) weakness as measured by a grip dynamometer; 4) exhaustion by responses to a depression scale; and 5) low physical activity was determined by assessing kilocalories expended in a week's time. Pre-frailty was present with any two of five criteria and frailty was present if any three of the five criteria were abnormal.The tests take approximately 10-15 min to complete and they can be performed by medical assistants during routine clinic visits. Test results are scored by referring to standard tables. Understanding which of the five components contribute to frailty in an individual patient can allow the clinician to address relevant underlying problems, many of which are not evident in routine HIV clinic visits.

This report describes the administrative organizational plans and pedagogical objectives for early childhood education programs in Sweden which have evolved since the passage of the 1973 Pre-School Activities Act. A Central Joint Committee for Pre-schools will be set up to advise both the Board of Health and Welfare and the Board of Education. Within the individual municipalities, pre-school activities are to be the responsibility of the central social services committee, although, according to the government bill, the various forms of pre-school activity will be guided by a uniform educational approach. The approach is based on interplay and cooperation between children and adults, children and children, and adults and adults. A description of the organizational model, as set by the 1968 Commission on Child Centres, includes discussions of full- and part-time pre-schools, the staff team, the latest available statistics on enrollment, projected expansion figures, and commissions appointed to review the conditions of pre-school children. Addressing the surge in mental health and social and emotional needs of students and staff will be critical in the upcoming years. The increased understanding of the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma, and their negative effects on the social, emotional, and academic success of students, has propelled a growing number of schools, districts, and states to explore ways to implement trauma-informed (TI) approaches. With the goal of creating learning environments that are responsive to all students, but especially to the needs of trauma-exposed children and youth, the implementation of TI approaches is getting to be recognized as an effective practice and systems-change strategy toward achieving the goal of educational equity. This resource brief provides information on the principles and components of TI approaches, as well as guidance for initial steps of implementation for schools, districts, and states, in an effort to improve social, emotional, and academic outcomes for students. Resource links containing more details on TI implementation are provided throughout the brief as well as at the end.

It has been shown that the development of certain types of cancer can be hormone dependent. Estrogens, such as estradiol, have the ability to bind as ligands to the estrogen receptor in the first of many steps which could result in the activation or repression of genes critical in the mechanism of tumor growth. The principle objective of this proposal is to relate known biological reactions to physical properties such as point charges of atoms and the electrostatic potential. We are obtaining information about these electronic properties of estrogen derivatives from experimental determination of their electron density using high quality single crystal X-ray crystallography. During the past year, the focus was in completing Task 3, analysis of charge density data sets, for three systems (17-beta estradiol.1/2MeOH, 17-alpha estradiol.1/2H2O, and 17-alpha-estradiol .urea). Data integration techniques have been refined to improve overall data quality and consistency. Topological analysis has been completed, while analysis of the electrostatic potential is nearly complete. Initial comparisons have yielded some expected and unexpected results. These will be discussed in the body of the report. Continued effort must be made to obtain more quality data of different systems to increase the amount of data we have to reference to.

Adults are independent learners and are expected to direct their own learning. Nowadays, there are many MOOC platforms preferred by adult learners. Many states have adapted to these developments and established an online learning platform in order to carry out the training and development activities of civil servants. The Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Human Resources Office has established the Distance Learning Gate (DLG) platform in order to carry out educational activities. In this study, learning preferences of adult learners were determined in order to improve the relevant online learning environment and to structure appropriate trainings for public personnel. For this purpose, the training preferences of adult learners were determined according to their title groups and education levels. The participants of the research consisted of 4864 civil servants who received training from the DLG platform. According to the results, it was determined that adult learners preferred personal development training the most and professional development training in the last place. It is seen that the servants in the service title group that watched the most training in all categories according to the title groups. It is seen that the groups that received the least education are the senior manager and manager title group. On the other hand, it has been determined that the number of adult learners' training and the education categories differ according to the education level. According to the findings, it is seen that those who watched the most education are adults at the compulsory primary education level, while those who watched the least education are those who are at the graduate level. This research includes the first phase of a series of research and a design-based research. As a first step, the training preferences of adult learners were determined. In the next stage, a recommendation system will be integrated into the DLG platform based on the determined profiles.

Although the growth of local origination as a significant means of informing and entertaining people can be accelerated through creative, relevant, and participative programming, the spiral of increased revenues, broader programming, and more subscribers and viewers will still take time to reach substantial proportions--especially in the light of continued government restrictions. As proprietary CATV channel programming, leased channels, premium entertainment, and instructional programming increase, the variety of revenue sources to support such programming will also increase. Although these forms of revenue will surely increase over the next five to ten years, initially the local origination activity in any system should be geared to the expected near-term income and then expanded as additional revenues develop. The current high attrition rate in USAF pilot training is partly due to high potential eliminees entering the training system. This study examines the flight screening programs of West Germany, Great Britain, Canada, Israel, and the US Navy, and makes observations on significant features in each of the programs. Recommendations are made based on lifting the best features from each program and integrating them into the current USAF flying screening program. By improving the screening process, fewer high potential eliminees will enter the USAF pilot training system, leading to a lower attrition rate. Keywords: Air Force training.

This paper attempts to challenge the reader with a number of basic questions concerning the essential nature of doctrine in general, and space doctrine in particular. It also poses several questions concerning the process by which doctrine evolves or, alternatively, the process by which it can be systematically developed. The motiviation for this paper was a concern by the authors that the basic concept of doctrine and its role in the Air Force decision-making structure is not well or widely understood and that a clearer, more common understanding of this notion is an essential prerequisite to meaningful dialogue directed at the development of military space doctrine. Quite simply, before we embark on any journey toward the development of space doctrine, we need to have a clear understanding of our destination and the road we will take to get there. (Author)

This article is from Environmental Health , volume 13 . Abstract Background: The first step in evaluating potential geographic clusters of disease calls for an evaluation of the disease risk comparing the risk in a defined location to the risk in neighboring locations. Environmental exposures, however, represent continuous exposure levels across space not an exposure with a distinct boundary. The objectives of the current study were to adapt, apply and evaluate a geostatistical approach for identifying disease clusters. Methods: The exceedance probability for very low birth weight (VLBW; < 1.5 kg) infants was mapped using an Intrinsic Conditional Autoregressive model. The data were applied to a 20 by 20 grid of 1 km2 pixels centered on each of the 13 National Priority List Superfund Sites in Harris County, Texas. Results: Large clusters of VLBW were identified in close proximity to four of the 13 Superfund Sites. Three of the Superfund Sites, associated with disease clusters, were located close together in central Houston and these sites may have been surrounded by a single, confluent disease cluster. Conclusions: Geostatistical modeling of the exceedance probability for very low birth weights identified disease clusters of varying size, shape and statistical certainty near Superfund Sites in Harris County, Texas. The approach offers considerable potential as the first step for investigating potential disease clusters.

Principles of Economics was a leading economics textbook of Alfred Marshall (1842-1924), first published in 1890. Marshall began writing the Principles of Economics in 1881 and he spent much of the next decade at work on the treatise. His plan for the work gradually extended to a two-volume compilation on the whole of economic thought.<br /><br />The first volume was published in 1890 to worldwide acclaim that established him as one of the leading economists of his time. It brought the ideas of supply and demand, of marginal utility and of the costs of production into a coherent whole, and became the dominant economic textbook in England for a long period.
