12Application Of Network Analysis For Development And Promotion Of Sustainable Tourism In Public Forests

By

The issue of sustainable tourism within valuable natural areas has been extensively discussed ever since the emergence of sustainable development philosophy in the 1990s. In view of growing public interest in nature recreation and tourism development, the importance of addressing this subject matter has hitherto increased significantly. The main objective of the present paper was to offer a tool for supporting development and promotion of sustainable tourism in Poland’s forests managed by the State Forests – National Forest Holding. GIS technology, and specific tools for network analysis were used in the project. During task realization, only free and open software sources were used. The work was performed based on the example of the Forest District Zoledowo (Regional Directorate of State Forests in Torun, Poland) with the use of District’s spatial data resources. A web application was created to present information about tourist attractions and infrastructure on an interactive map with tools for route planning. As a result, there has been developed the web mapping application which provides general access to tourism related information and enables planning touristic routes by pre-specified criteria. Implemented routing algorithms can help traffic management and further protection of the areas vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures. The system created not only promotes attractive tourist sites but also, supports targeting tourist traffic, and accordingly – adds to the progress of sustainable tourism.

13The Role Of Recreational Activities In The Development Of Sustainable Tourism A Conceptual Evaluation

By

This conceptual article investigates the integral role of recreational activities in shaping the framework of sustainable tourism. In contemporary tourism discourse, sustainability has transcended its initial association with environmental concerns to encompass broader objectives such as cultural preservation, social cohesion, and equitable economic development. Within this expanded framework, recreational activities are not merely expressions of leisure but are positioned as critical instruments that foster ecological sensitivity, reinforce local identity, and promote inclusive participation. Nature based and culturally embedded forms of recreation, such as hiking, birdwatching, traditional craft making, and agritourism, establish dynamic interfaces between visitors and host communities. These experiences enable a deeper engagement with both natural landscapes and cultural contexts. They also facilitate the conservation of biodiversity, the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, and the diffusion of socially responsible tourism practices. Anchored in theoretical constructs such as Bourdieu’s notion of cultural capital and perspectives from environmental psychology, this article argues that recreation contributes not only to the experiential enrichment of tourism but also to the strategic goals of sustainability. It concludes by advocating for the explicit integration of recreational planning into tourism policy as a mechanism to ensure long term ecological integrity, cultural resilience, and community based development. 21Engendering Sustainable Socio-spatial Environment For Tourism Activities In The South Eastern Nigeria: The Place Of Environmental Planning And Management Process

By

The South Eastern part of Nigeria was a single state of the twelve states of Nigeria before 1976 – East Central State. Presently, the area is made up of five states. This Paper presents a study carried out to assess the possibility of knitting the once-one-state and presently five states, together to form a tourist destination worthy of international importance. Although the unprecedented dearth of infrastructural development in the zone continues to be a subject of discussion, little attention has been given to investigate the place of synergized intervention. Descriptive analysis was employed, in which the tourism potentials in the zone that are of national recognition were itemized. Data were collected on available amenities, resident population and accessibility of such potentials. Existing literature on various Environmental Management Systems were explored to elicit a system that is capable of affording a sustainable environment for tourism matters in the zone. The study revealed that the zone exhibits similar socio-economic and physical characteristics that are replete with potentials for improvement for optimum tourism utility in the entire zone. Several measures were advanced in the study to achieve this, chief of which is the adoption of the Environmental Planning and Management (EPM) process.

By

Sustainable development strategies for sports tourism contribute to the economic, social, cultural and environmental development of tourist destinations. This paper aims to explore the beneficial practice of sustainable development of sports tourism through systematic literature review. The ultimate goal is to summarize sustainable development strategies implemented in sports tourism that have a positive impact on the economic, social, environmental and cultural environment of the destination. This study followed the protocol of the Preferred Reporting Project (PRISMA) method of Systematic Review and Meta-analysis to conduct a systematic literature review. Through meta-comprehensive analysis method, four key aspects of sustainable development of sports tourism are identified, namely, tourist travel, strategic management of sports tourism, facility construction, and education and publicity. Encouraging green travel, optimizing transportation planning, building evaluation models, developing development strategies, improving infrastructure sustainability and strengthening sustainable education are crucial to formulating effective sports tourism sustainable development plans, promoting sports tourism sustainable development, and realizing a sustainable tourism future.

28Chapter 12 Fostering Stakeholder Engagement In Sustainable Cultural Tourism Development In Nature-based Sites - A Case Study On Using Methodological Layering Of Art-based Methods

In this chapter, we explore how the methodological layering of art-based methods (ABMs) can engage various stakeholders in sustainable cultural tourism development in Utsjoki—the northernmost municipality in Finland. The case study area is a dominantly rural and nature-based destination where the Indigenous Sámi community plays an essential role in setting up development priorities. In the Sámi way of life, nature and culture are deeply intertwined, as nature-based livelihoods and using local land and water are important parts of the local culture. The municipality needs new solutions for year-round sustainable tourism to replace the highly seasonal wild salmon fishing tourism on which it previously relied. Tourism activities should be designed collaboratively and not disturb the local way of life. Compared to traditional research methods, the participatory and versatile aspects of ABMs can offer more collaborative approaches to create shared understanding and build empathy amongst individuals. It is clear in the existing literature that ABMs are powerful vehicles in supporting certain marginalized and vulnerable groups to make their voices heard. We argue that integrating art-based and service design methods can serve as an instrument to foster stakeholder engagement in sustainable tourism development in the municipality. Through a process-oriented lens, we describe how we employed the methodological layering of ABMs as a bottom-up approach in Utsjoki to achieve a shared understanding of sustainable tourism development in the area in a way that is acceptable to the local community.

29Measuring Stakeholders’ Attitudes Toward Sustainable Development Of Conference And Congress Tourism: Serbia Case Study

By

Purpose – Scientific publications regarding business tourism, especially those which incorporate elements of sustainable development, still remain scarce in the existing literature. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine attitudes of local tourist organizations, travel agencies, catering establishments, chambers of commerce and other relevant stakeholders towards the sustainable development of conference and congress tourism (CCT) in Vojvodina, Serbia. Methodology – In order to investigate the attitudes of stakeholders (n=174), the adapted sustainable tourism attitude scale (SUS-TAS) was used in this paper. Moreover, the responses of the directors (managers) of local tourism organizations to several open-ended questions, which make an integral part of the survey, are also presented. Findings – The research instrument proved to be reliable. Based on other applied analyses (t-test and ANOVA), the existence of numerous statistically significant differences in the responses in relation to gender, job position, sector of work, age and education were identified. Implications – Apart from theoretical contribution, this paper reveals what aspects of CCT are in stakeholders’ main focus and what seems to be out of their radar. This should help defining necessary actions for further improvements of CCT. Lastly, study limitations and future research guidelines are discussed.

40Sustainable Tourism And Responsible Travel With Vicky Smith, Earth Changers

By

Vicky Smith is the founder of Earth Changers, an award-winning travel website and \"purpose-first\" business highlighting sustainable, ethical and responsible tourism. The size and worldwide scope of tourism means its power to deliver impact and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals is unrivalled, says Vicky. In this fascinating interview Vicky - who is a travel industry veteran - explains how demand and supply of sustainable tourism is increasing.Tourism is the only way to create opportunity and even to protect endangered species in some locations in the developing world, she says, so you shouldn't necessarily feel guilty about flying, but if you do, you should really make your trip count so it makes a positive contribution to people and places. She also introduces a concept I'd never come across until now: \"Greenhushing\" - when businesses are actually already doing great things in terms of environmental sustainability but don't want to publicly discuss them. And Vicky describes the injury which led to her launching Earth Changers; biggest challenges and achievements to date; how destinations measure their impacts; how Earth Changers itself creates impact for destinations; and her plans for the future.

43Five Albanian Villages - Guidelines For A Sustainable Tourism Development Through The Enhancement Of The Cultural Heritage

This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants’ quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. Through concrete proposals and strategies, the book offers scenarios and solutions capable of enhancing the potential of each village and, at the same time, counteracting the effects of land abandonment that so often characterise them.

44Linking Residents’ Perceptions Of Pandemic Quality Of Life With Their Support For Sustainable Tourism Development In The Post-COVID-19 Era

By

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed tourist flows, reducing the number of international tourist arrivals around the world. One of the ways to protect the tourism industry from the ongoing health crisis was through the stimulation of domestic and proximity tourism . During the COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia, domestic tourists were attracted to spa destinations such as Vrnjačka Banja. Thus, residents of this small-town destination experience d a great influx of tourists , altering their everyday lives. This paper examines the quality of life domains of Vrnjačka Banja residents during the pandemic and their support for sustainable tourism initiatives in the viable future. Study findings suggest that spirituality and support from friends and general quality of life as identified domains of quality of life during the pandemic emerged as antecedents of support for sustainable tourism . The study contributes to the existing tourism knowledge by acknowledging the capacity of different domains of residents’ quality of life in the pandemic context to frame future sustainable tourism initiatives.

48Whose Responsibility Is It – Evaluation Of Sustainable Tourism Development At Lake Balaton

By

Organisations play an important role in creating well-being of society and the environment. The main objective of the study is to map perspectives on sustainability among selected stakeholder groups including tourists/temporary visitors, local communities, and public and private decision-making professionals (public, non-profit, and for-profit) in the Lake Balaton region. The study is based on a combined methodology. First, insights from tourists and local residents were collected in a quantitative survey. Insights about sustainable tourism development from public, non-profit and for-profit tourism industry professionals were collected using semi-structured interviews. Results show that from an environmental perspective sustainable tourism represents nature-based tourism development. As regards a profit/economic perspective, buying local products and choosing locally owned restaurants, local markets play a significant role in the region. Differences in consumption patterns among locals and visitors are reflected in the lower need for off-season tourism offer. Interviewed stakeholders recognized the need for knowledge sharing and attitude forming.

1Roaring Girl

By

The Roaring Girl is a rip-roaring Jacobean comedy co-written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker and first published in 1611. The play is a fictionalized dramatization of the life of Mary Frith, known as "Moll Cutpurse", a woman who had gained a reputation as a virago in the early 17th century. (The term "roaring girl" was adapted from the slang term "roaring boy", which was applied to a young man who caroused publicly, brawled, and committed petty crimes.) The play combines the exploits of the cross-dressed Moll with the amorous adventures of a trio of merchants' wives, and the forbidden romance between Sebastian Wengrave and Mary Fitzallard. 2Women Beware Women

By

Thomas Middleton's masterful 17th century tragedy is packed with adultery, incest, intrigue, revenge, and inventive methods for murder. Leantio elopes with Bianca against her family's wishes and tries to hide her in the house he shares with his widowed mother. Yet the Duke sees Bianca at the window and is powerfully attracted to her, threatening Leantio's security. Livia, a wealthy widow, delights in intrigue, aiding the Duke to satisfy his desires with Bianca, and bringing together her brother Hippolito with her niece Isabella, despite their familial relationship. Yet even Livia is not immune to love. The final play-within-a-play in Act 5, one of the goriest and most sensational conclusions to a Jacobean tragedy, is also (like the play as a whole) laced with dark humor. 3Changeling

By

The Changeling is a sensational 1622 tragicomedy by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley that comprises two intertwining plots. The first involves Beatrice-Joanna, daughter of the governor of Alicante, and her unruly passion for Alsemero, despite the fact that she is engaged to Alonzo de Piracquo. She enlists the aid of her father's servant De Flores to kill Alonzo so that she can marry Alsemero. However, she does not anticipate that De Flores, who is in love with her, will demand payment for the deed. The second plot is set in a madhouse, where the jealous old doctor Alibius is keeping his beautiful young wife Isabella confined so that she will not be unfaithful to him. Despite his best efforts, she is assailed by illicit suitors on all sides: Franciscus, who disguises himself as a madman, Antonio, who disguises himself as a fool, and Lollio, his lustful servant. 4Revenger's Tragedy

By

"When the bad bleeds, then is the tragedy good." The Revenger's Tragedy is a bloody Jacobean drama centering on Vindici, whose beloved has been murdered by the Duke. Aided by his brother Hippolito, Vindici plans to take revenge not only on the Duke, but on his lecherous Duchess (who is having an affair with her stepson, Spurio) and his sons Lussurioso (Lust), Ambitioso (Ambition), and Supervacuo (Excess). The play was published anonymously in 1606 and for several centuries was attributed to Cyril Tourneur; more recent scholarship has pointed to Thomas Middleton as the likely author. The play was part of the vogue for revenge tragedy in late 16th and early 17th century England, and has often been compared to Hamlet. 7Family of Love

By

The Family of Love is an early Jacobean city comedy, first published in 1608. Published anonymously, the play was long attributed to Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, although more recent scholarship suggests that Lording Barry may be the sole author. The play satirises the supposed sexual lasciviousness of the Familia Caritatis or "Family of Love," the religious sect founded by Henry Nicholis in the 16th century.

Maria is in love with Gerardine but her uncle, Glister the physician, opposes the match. Gerardine pretends to depart for a long ocean voyage, leaving a trunk containing his earthly possessions to Maria, but when Maria opens the trunk she finds Gerardine inside. Meanwhile, Glister cheats on his wife with the Familist wife of Purge the apothecary. Two dim-witted gallants, Gudgeon and Lipsalve, try to bed every woman they meet and want nothing more than to gain access to the secretive Familist Meeting House, which rumor has it is a bastion of free-love. With the help of Dryfat the merchant and Club the apprentice, Gerardine stages a mock trial with the intention of teaching everyone a lesson. - Summary by Wikipedia and Rob Board.

Cast Narrator: David Lawrence
Gerardine: Tomas Peter
Maria: Khand
Glister: Hamlet
Mistress Glister: Sonia
Mistress Purge: Leanne Yau
Purge: alanmapstone
Lipsalve: Rob Board
Gudgeon: Andrew Utley
Dryfat: Peter Tucker
Club: ToddHW
Shrimp: ScarlettG
Periwinkle: Stoofy
Vial: Nemo
Within: Sandra Schmit
Edited by: Rob Board

8Poems & Songs

By

This is a volume of poetry by English poet Richard Middleton. While hardly known to readers anymore today, Middleton's poems, stories, and essays were all very highly regarded during his lifetime and after his untimely death, having won the admiration of many of his contemporary critics and writers whose fame endured longer than that of Middleton himself. A look into this volume of poetry should convince the reader or listener that Middleton's poetry certainly deserves much more attention than is currently given it. - Summary by Carolin

By

Richard Middleton is one of the many authors who, despite great merit, have been almost entirely forgotten today. This English author was an eminent literary figure in his day, admired by, among others, Edgar Jepson, Arthur Machen, and Raymond Chandler. This collection of short stories contains his best-known short story, The Ghost Ship, a skillfully written horror story. The other stories contained in this collection are not all horror stories, but cover a variety of genres and topics. - Summary by Carolin

Legend meets lore at Longdendale, the "long wooded valley" of fabled Cheshire. Thomas Middleton - a dramatist, politician, antiquarian, lecturer, writer, Sunday School teacher and local historian - has preserved for us a collection of wild and perhaps improbable folk tales of chieftains, kings, chivalrous knights, foul villains and fearsome beasts all connected over time in the Longdendale tradition. - Summary by Brian Fullen
