Multilinguals produce both typical and atypical speech disfluencies at higher rates than monolinguals, but the underlying reasons for this phenomenon are less than well understood. This markedly high frequency of speech disfluencies can cause typically fluent multilingual individuals to be misdiagnosed as individuals who stutter. The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map the available evidence concerning the reported types and frequencies of disfluencies of speech disfluencies occurring in multilingual individuals who do and do not stutter.

Preregistration of hypotheses and analysis plan for diffusion imaging data obtained in adult men who stutter, collected in the baseline session of a treatment study (registered here: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03335722), women who stutter, and men and women who are typically fluent.

The aim of the study is to investigate the (communicative) impact of stuttering on preschool children (3;0-5;11 years; n=225) who stutter. Therefore, the project investigates the constructs of 1. communicative participation 2. intelligibility in context 3. communication attitude 4. communicative well-being and 5. psychosocial problems (f.e. anxiety and depression) of preschool children who stutter. The following assessments are used: Demographic questionnaire (including Winklers social class index; Winkler & Stolzenberg, 1999), SSI-4: Stuttering Severity Instrument (Riley, 2009), QBS: Qualitative Beschreibung von Stotterverhalten [Qualitative Description of Stuttering and Secondary Behavior] (Schneider, 2014), KiddyCAT-G: Communication Attitude Test for Preschool and Kindergarten Children Who Stutter (Vanryckeghem & Brutten, 2012), SPAA-C 2.0: Likert Scale of communication well-being of the Speech Participation And Activity of Children questionnaire (McLeod, 2003)/the German translation ASAP-K (Neumann, 2011), FOCUS-34-G: Focus on the Outcomes of Communication Under Six, version 34 (Thomas-Stonell, Oddson, Robertson, Walker & Rosenbaum, 2015), ICS: Intelligibility in Context Scale (McLeod, Harrison, & McCormack, 2012), CBCL 1½- 5: Child Behavior Checklist 1½-5 (Achenbach, 2000).

The protocol and development of this review will primarily follow PRISMA-ScR (TRICCO et al., 2018), characterized as an extension of PRISMA for scoping reviews. The initial version of the protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework on November 24, 2024.

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to understand what is known about how adults who stutter (AWS) perceive successful treatment. Introduction: AWS are a heterogeneous group and therefore their experiences of stuttering, interventions and treatment outcomes are variable. There is current and emerging literature outlining the ideal but often diverse components of stuttering interventions from the perspectives of adults who stutter, listeners and expert opinions. However there is limited research, regarding how AWS determine if treatment has been successful for their individual needs, and how they determine success.

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract Developmental stuttering is a disorder of speech fluency with an unknown pathogenesis. The similarity of its phenotype and natural history with other childhood neuropsychiatric disorders of frontostriatal pathology suggests that stuttering may have a closely related pathogenesis. We investigated in this study the potential involvement of frontostriatal circuits in developmental stuttering. We collected functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 46 persons with stuttering and 52 fluent controls during performance of the Simon Spatial Incompatibility Task. We examined differences between the two groups of blood-oxygen-level-dependent activation associated with two neural processes, the resolution of cognitive conflict and the context-dependent adaptation to changes in conflict. Stuttering speakers and controls did not differ on behavioral performance on the task. In the presence of conflict-laden stimuli, however, stuttering speakers activated more strongly the cingulate cortex, left anterior prefrontal cortex, right medial frontal cortex, left supplementary motor area, right caudate nucleus, and left parietal cortex. The magnitude of activation in the anterior cingulate cortex correlated inversely in stuttering speakers with symptom severity. Stuttering speakers also showed blunted activation during context-dependent adaptation in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a brain region that mediates cross-temporal contingencies. Frontostriatal hyper-responsivity to conflict resembles prior findings in other disorders of frontostriatal pathology, and therefore likely represents a general mechanism supporting functional compensation for an underlying inefficiency of neural processing in these circuits. The reduced activation of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex likely represents the inadequate readiness of stuttering speakers to execute a sequence of motor responses.

One’s voice is partly a marker of one’s authorial personality. Voice is both metaphorical and rhetorical. Further, the concept of voice embodies one’s cognitive  and  auditory representation of oneself. Voice articulates an ethotic narrative, of sorts, that offers insight into the storyteller. I stutter. I have for as long as I can remember. My internal dialogue has to accommodate my outward voice, which can be dysfluent and haphazard. My voice, and yours too, carries with it personality and experience. The latter can be a burden. However, it is true to who we are. Our voice carries hopes and dreams, fears and ambitions. It can freeze us or free us.

Gaffe/Stutter is a dead letter to Deleuze’s Logic of Sense. It began as a series of diagrams, two-dimensional memory palaces that sketch the vectors of each chapter’s paradox; it became an elaborate plan for a web-based diagrammatic (r)e(n)dition of Logic of Sense, built on zoomable, annotatable high-resolution scans of these diagrams. Conceived as an anti-book — a visual reading schematic — this project eschews the line of text in favor of regimented grids, the ink-soaked grain of the remediated pen over the laser-burned face of print; playful reaction rather than academic protraction. This is not an analogy, or a product of the imagination, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari would write in A Thousand Plateaus, but a composition of speeds and affects on the plane of consistency: a plan(e), a program, or rather a diagram, a problem, a question-machine. It ended as a directory of inert jQuery demos and digital scans: an image of Trafalgar Square at dusk, annotated with the words “Flag,” “Small people on the steps,” “A Statue,” and “National Gallery Dome”; an empty html file titled ‘delete.html’. The visitor who may happen to wander onto the website where these project demos are stashed would find herself stuck on Deleuze’s definition of a paradox as initially that which destroys good sense as the only direction of becoming, but also that which destroys common sense as the assignation of fixed identities. This review aims to synthesize the existing evidence on instrumental voice measures in individuals who stutter compared to non-stuttering controls. The project will systematically identify, appraise, and summarize studies that use objective acoustic, electroglottographic, aerodynamic, or laryngeal imaging assessments to characterize potential differences in voice quality and phonatory function. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of the vocal features associated with stuttering beyond speech fluency, contributing to the understanding of its broader impact on voice production.

Neurodiversity research has focused on language preferences in autism, despite the focus, neurodiversity movement encompassing a range neurodivergences, including ADHD, dyslexia, and learning differences. Unfortunately, some neurodivergent groups have received little research attention. Among these groups are people who stutter who are often seen as both disadvantaged and marginalized groups, facing stigmatization, partly due to the language used to describe them. Addressing this stigmatization involves respecting their language preferences, which could alter perception and reduce discrimination. This study aims; i) to identify the language preferences regarding stuttering among English-speaking individuals and either diagnosed with stuttering, in the diagnosis process, or self-identify as stutterer, ii) to examine the relationship between these language preferences and underlying mechanisms such as levels of knowledge and awareness of stuttering, internalized stigma, and social identity related to stuttering. Understanding these preferences is vital for gaining insights into discrimination, marginalization, and stigmatization that potentially lead to these preferences. By respecting preferred terminologies, political authorities, professionals, and the general public can help prevent the marginalization and stigmatization of individuals diagnosed with stuttering (St.Louis, 1999). Overall, this project is valuable to empower people who stutter by involving them in research about stuttering to create more inclusive communities for such individuals and their families by understanding their language preferences. Additionally, this project will apply the participatory research method to people who stutter via Stamma and Action for Stuttering in Children. This group is expected to actively participate in scientific studies related to stuttering with their views and critiques. In this way, the participatory research method—where studies on clinical groups are conducted in collaboration with individuals who are in this clinical group (with an official diagnosis or self-diagnosis)—can be practiced. To our knowledge, this study will be the first one that practices participatory research for stuttering-related projects related to language preferences.

This will be a systematic literature search based scoping review, in order to find out, how self-acceptance as a construct is defined in combination to stuttering and how self-acceptance of stuttering can be administred. Based on prior empirical work from other stuttering, associations between self-acceptance and in particular quality of life in stuttering are expected - meaning the higher self-acceptance is the higher stutterers score in quality of life questionnaires. Additionally a research gap in the valid and reliable assessment of self-acceptance in adults who stutter is expected.
