For many parents in Montgomery County, allowing their children to play sports is a cost they are unable to afford. In an effort to help bridge what they call an opportunity gap, staff at IMPACT Silver Spring are helping families with that costs thanks to grants and contributions from the community. IMPACT was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Maryland-Deleware-D.C. Beverage Association to provide on-going sports opportunities to children and youth in low-income areas.

The power transitions precipitated by the Arab Spring revolutions afford opportunity for significant positive political and economic change. However, the specific areas in which improvement is most essential to generating economic advancement are less obvious than those associated with improved governance, and are less likely to be uniform across all countries involved. In consideration of that assertion, this thesis identifies areas most correlated with economic growth, the fostering of a positive entrepreneurial environment, and progression to a more advanced economic stage of development through employment of two distinct statistical methods. These methods are applied to the North African countries affected by the Arab Spring revolutions. Areas in which improvement is required to create positive change that are specific to the country being studied are thereby determined. The cases of pre-Arab Spring Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt were examined in an attempt to provide guidance and focus for the enormous tasks of governmental construction and reform the incoming administrations of each country will face. The ultimate outcome of the analysis is an expression of the vicious economic cycle unique to each, including a determination of causal factors identified as areas in which improvement will be most likely to favorably transform their economies.

Analysis of Leukemia Incidence and Mortality Data for St. Charles County, Weldon Spring and Surrounding Areas December 2011 (Update to April 2005 Report); cancer; radioactive waste; public health

Differential microhabitat use may be beneficial to achieving fitness in seasonally variable environmental conditions. To explore whether the microhabitat use of the nocturnal Schlegel’s Japanese gecko, Gekko japonicus, varies seasonally and depends on juvenile, male, and female reproductive groups, we investigated five categorical and five quantitative measure variables of microhabitat use in a wild population both in spring and summer. Most geckos were found on white, vertical planes of concrete and plastered brick walls. None of the categorical variables (type of location, substrate, substrate color, light source, and refuge) significantly differed according to season or group, while substrate temperature and irradiance at the location where geckos were observed and the distance from the nearest potential refuge were significantly greater in summer than in spring. The quantitative measure variables did not differ among the reproductive groups. These results suggest that G. japonicus seasonally adjusts its microhabitat use mainly in terms of quantitative measure variables rather than categorical variables.

This study evaluates the success of Johnson County Community College's College Learning Center (CLC) in helping students to improve specific skills in six areas: spelling, vocabulary, English, mathematics, reading comprehension, and reading rate. The CLC offers individualized programs which employ a combination of self-instructional materials and individual tutoring. Data were analyzed separately for the spring 1972-summer 1973 and fall 1973-summer 1974 periods in order to detect any difference in the success patterns of CLC instruction. Evaluation was based on analysis of gains in performance for every student participating during either period. The average gains represented significant improvement from pre-test to post-test in all six areas; the improvement was similar for both time periods. Statistical data is presented graphically for each subject. Appendix A describes the six courses and their pre- and post-tests. Appendix B lists supplementary instructional materials for the six programs. (MJK)

Compiled from survey responses, this publication constitutes the second edition of a guide to established outdoor and environmental education centers in the State of New York. Organized by region (Environmental Conservation Regions of New York State) and by county, approximately 80 entries are presented.
