1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19810005885: Applicability Of Advanced Automotive Heat Engines To Solar Thermal Power
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The requirements of a solar thermal power system are reviewed and compared with the predicted characteristics of automobile engines under development. A good match is found in terms of power level and efficiency when the automobile engines, designed for maximum powers of 65-100 kW (87 to 133 hp) are operated to the nominal 20-40 kW electric output requirement of the solar thermal application. At these reduced power levels it appears that the automotive gas turbine and Stirling engines have the potential to deliver the 40+ percent efficiency goal of the solar thermal program.

2NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19800014290: Concept Definition Study Of Small Brayton Cycle Engines For Dispersed Solar Electric Power Systems
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Three first-generation Brayton cycle engine types were studied for solar application: a near-term open cycle (configuration A), a near-term closed cycle (configuration B), and a longer-term open cycle (configuration C). A parametric performance analysis was carried out to select engine designs for the three configurations. The interface requirements for the Brayton cycle engine/generator and solar receivers were determined. A technology assessment was then carried out to define production costs, durability, and growth potential for the selected engine types.

4NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19800008223: Study Of Advanced Radial Outflow Turbine For Solar Steam Rankine Engines
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The performance characteristics of various steam Rankine engine configurations for solar electric power generation were investigated. A radial outflow steam turbine was investigated to determine: (1) a method for predicting performance from experimental data; (2) the flexibility of a single design with regard to power output and pressure ratio; and (3) the effect of varying the number of turbine stages. All turbine designs were restricted to be compatible with commercially available gearboxes and generators. A study of several operating methods and control schemes for the steam Rankine engine shows that from an efficiency and control simplicity standpoint, the best approach is to hold turbine inlet temperature constant, vary turbine inlet pressure to match load, and allow condenser temperature to float maintaining constant heat rejection load.

5DTIC ADA198807: Holographic Solar Energy Concentrators For Solar Thermal Rocket Engines
By Defense Technical Information Center
This is a report on Holographic Concentrators for Solar Thermal Rocket Engines. The object of the work was to demonstrate that highly reflective holograms could be used as solar concentrators to heat liquid hydrogen for use as a propellant in satellite boost engines. The interest in this results from the need for a reliable, inexpensive alternate for conventional rockets. Keywords: Holography; Holographic concentrators; Bragg planes; Dispersion compensation holograms; Swelling; Emulsions; Substrates; Nitinol.

6NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20080012673: Attitude Control Flight Experience: Coping With Solar Radiation And Ion Engines Leak Thrust In Hayabusa (MUSES-C)
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The paper presents the attitude reorientation taking the advantage of solar radiation pressure without use of any fuel aboard. The strategy had been adopted to make Hayabusa spacecraft keep pointed toward the Sun for several months, while spinning. The paper adds the above mentioned results reported in Sedona this February showing another challenge of combining ion engines propulsion tactically balanced with the solar radiation torque with no spin motion. The operation has been performed since this March for a half year successfully. The flight results are presented with the estimated solar array panel diffusion coefficient and the ion engine's swirl torque.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19840020184: Recent Advances In Design Of Low Cost Film Concentrator And Low Pressure Free Piston Stirling Engines For Solar Power
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The free piston Stirling-linear alternator was shown to be scalable to power levels of tens of kilowatts in a form which is simple, efficient, long lived and relatively inexpensive. It avoids entirely the vexing problem of high pressure shaft, and its control requirements are not severe nor do they represent a significant threat to durability. Linear alternators have demonstrated high efficiency and moderate weight, and are capable of delivering 3 phase power from single machines without great increases of cost or complexity. There remains no apparent impediments to the commercial exploitation of the free piston engine for solar electric power generation.

10NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19840024848: Survey Of Manufacturers Of High-performance Heat Engines Adaptable To Solar Applications
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The results of an industry survey made during the summer of 1983 are summarized. The survey was initiated in order to develop an information base on advanced engines that could be used in the solar thermal dish-electric program. Questionnaires inviting responses were sent to 39 companies known to manufacture or integrate externally heated engines. Follow-up telephone communication ensured uniformity of response. It appears from the survey that the technology exists to produce external-heat-addition engines of appropriate size with thermal efficiencies of over 40%. Problem areas are materials and sealing.
