In previous approaches to form quasicrystals, multiple competing length scales involved in particle size, shape or interaction potential are believed to be necessary. It is unexpected that quasicrystals can be self-assembled by monodisperse, isotropic particles interacting via a simple potential without multiple length scales. Here we report the surprising finding of the self-assembly of such quasicrystals in two dimensional systems of soft-core disks interacting via repulsions. We find not only dodecagonal but also octagonal quasicrystals, which have not been found yet in soft quasicrystals. In the self-assembly of such unexpected quasicrystals, particles tend to form pentagons, which are essential elements to form the quasicrystalline order. Our findings pave an unexpected and simple way to form quasicrystals and pose a new challenge for theoretical understanding of quasicrystals.

We propose to realize an exotic Haldane superfluid (HSF) phase in an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the two-leg ladder (i.e., a two-species mixture of interacting bosons). The proposal is confirmed by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, with a significant part of the ground-state phase diagram being revealed. Most remarkably, the newly discovered HSF phase features both superfluidity and the non-local topological Haldane order. The effects induced by varying the number of legs are furthermore explored. Our results shed light on how topological superfluid emerges in bosonic systems.

The YN results are presented from the Extended-soft-core (ESC) interactions. They consist of local- and non-local-potentials due to (i) One-boson-exchange (OBE), with pseudoscalar-, vector-, scalar-, and axial-vector-nonets, (ii) Diffractive exchanges, (iii) Two-pseudoscalar exchange, and (iv) Meson-pair-exchange (MPE). This model, called ESC04, describes NN and YN in a unified way using broken flavor SU(3)-symmetry. Novel ingredients are the inclusion of (i) the axial-vector-mesons, (ii) a zero in the scalar- and axial-vector meson form factors. We describe simultaneous fits to the NN- and YN-data, using four options in the ESC-model. Very good fits were obtained. G-matrix calculations with these four options are also reported. The obtained well depths (U_\Lambda, U_\Sigma, U_\Xi) reveal distinct features of ESC04a-d. The \Lambda\Lambda-interactions are demonstrated to be consistent with the observed data of_{\Lambda\Lambda}^6He. The possible three-body effects are investigated by considering phenomenologically the changes of the vector-meson masses in a nuclear medium.

Structural engineering is a part of civil engineering dealing with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. This paper deals with the study of architectural drawing and the framing drawing of the building with soft story. Buildings with soft storey are typical feature in the modern multi-storey construction in urban India. Such features are highly undesirable in a building built in seismically active areas. in this study G+6 high-rise building with soft storey subjected seismic load is been analyzed. Building is designed according to IS 456-2002. Building is assumed to be located in seismic zone 5 according to IS 1893 2002 code. Soil is considered as medium type (with mass density=2100 kg/m3 modulus of elasticity=100Mpa, poison’s ratio=0.25). Linear analysis is done using linear dynamic method and nonlinear analysis by pushover analysis method. Finally, the behavior is studied by studying Diaphragm drift, point displacement, using the FEM based analytical software ETABS9.7.4

It is well known that statistical mechanics systems exhibit subtle behavior in high dimensions. In this paper, we show that certain natural soft-core models, such as the Gaussian core model, have unexpectedly complex ground states even in relatively low dimensions. Specifically, we disprove a conjecture of Torquato and Stillinger, who predicted that dilute ground states of the Gaussian core model in dimensions 2 through 8 would be Bravais lattices. We show that in dimensions 5 and 7, there are in fact lower-energy non-Bravais lattices. (The nearest three-dimensional analog is the hexagonal close-packing, but it has higher energy than the face-centered cubic lattice.) We believe these phenomena are in fact quite widespread, and we relate them to decorrelation in high dimensions.

This research program explores time-resolved dynamics of molecular systems using femtosecond core level photoelectron spectroscopy. Ultrafast soft x-ray laser pump/probe studies reveal time-dependent binding energies and atomic core level-shifts in the molecules during chemical rearrangements by detecting the changes in photoelectron spectra as a function of internuclear separation in dissociative states in real time. A new apparatus introduces high order harmonics of a laser in the soft x-ray region of the spectrum. Harmonic pulses with photon energies up to 100 eV and femtosecond time resolution have been produced with excellent efficiency and pulse-to-pulse stability. Valence and core photoelectron spectra have been obtained on many neutral atoms and molecules with this apparatus.

Photoelectron spectra and photoionization mass spectra of gas phase ionic liquids were obtained. Two color excitation spectra of bromine molecules were investigated, as well as Rydberg wave packet photoelectron angular distributions. Pump/probe experiments on the photodissociation of metal carbonyls, halogens, and aluminum halides were also under investigation.

The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials. Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction. However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.

This curriculum is critical to their success, and yet the fast-paced, global marketplace of today is demanding more. Technical professionals in various disciplines such as information technology, engineering, architecture, and research and development are increasingly required to broaden their skill sets to master the so-called soft skills. Soft skills, as defined by Wikipedia, are "the cluster of personality traits, social graces, facility with language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that mark people to varying degrees. Soft skills complement hard skills, which are the technical requirements of a job." Furthermore, the authors present the three driving forces behind business leaders' increasing demand for a broader skill set from technical professionals: (1) necessity for improvements to the bottom line; (2) increasing competition; and (3) globalization.

The integral relations formalism introduced in \cite{bar09,rom11}, and designed to describe 1+$N$ reactions, is extended here to collision energies above the threshold for the target breakup. These two relations are completely general, and in this work they are used together with the adiabatic expansion method for the description of 1+2 reactions. The neutron-deuteron breakup, for which benchmark calculations are available, is taken as a test of the method. The s-wave collision between the $^4$He atom and $^4$He$_2$ dimer above the breakup threshold and the possibility of using soft-core two-body potentials plus a short-range three-body force will be investigated. Comparisons to previous calculations for the three-body recombination and collision dissociation rates will be shown.

The vast majority of embedded system designs start with a processor-based system, using a microcontroller or microprocessor as the core element to predict and process the basic control tasks. This paper aims to increase the reliability of controlling a stepper motor by an embedded circuit, which generates four digital signals of pulse width modulation (PWM). The manager of this circuit is an embedded processor licensed from Microblaze, which sits within the FPGA architecture Virtex 5. This processor analyzes the parameters to execute the rotation under the best conditions (energy consumption, speed, precision, and reliability). The communication with the PC takes place via the RS232 link to provide feedback. The autonomous processor generates an independent control frequency of the PC. The four digital signals of PWM are simulated on Xilinx's ISim interface and sent to the ULN2803 amplifier circuit to run the stepper motor.

This paper presents an embedded control application of clock frequency to control the pulse width of the output signals, implemented on field programmable get array. This control allows the creation of lines of Pulsewidth modulation depending on the numbers of card outputs, without using the specific "Timers /Counters" blocks; this method is effective to adjust the amount of power supplied to an electrical charge. The purpose of this work is to achieve a real time hardware implementation with higher performance in both size and speed. Performance of these designimplemented in field programmable get array virtex 5 card, and signals displayed on an asciloscope.

This paper presents the Extended-Soft-Core (ESC) potentials ESC04a-d for baryon-baryon channels with total strangeness $S=-2$. For these channels no experimental scattering data exist, and alsothe information from hypernuclei is very limited.The potential models for $S=-2$ are based on SU(3) extensions of potential models for the $S=0,-1$ sectors, which are fitted to experimental data. Flavor su(3)-symmetry is broken 'kinematically'by the masses of the baryons and the mesons.Moreover, in ESC04a,b aldo the coupling constants are broken, albeit in a well defined way using the $^3P_0$ quark-antiquark pair creation model as a guidance. But the fit to the S=0 and $S=-1$ sectors provides the necessary constraints to fix all free parameters.Therefore, the potentials for the $S=-2$ sectors do not contain additional free parameters, which situation is similar to the soft-core one-boson-exchange NSC97-models. Various properties of the potentials are illustrated by giving results for scattering lengths, bound states, phase-parameters, and total cross sections. The features of $\Xi$-hypernuclei predicted by ESC04d are studied on the basis of the G-matrix approach.

An analytical description of polymer melts and their mixtures as liquids of interacting soft colloidal particles is obtained from liquid-state theory. The derived center-of-mass pair correlation functions with no adjustable parameters reproduce those computed from united atom molecular dynamics simulations. The coarse-grained description correctly bridges micro- and mesoscopic fluid properties. Molecular dynamics simulations of soft colloidal particles interacting through the calculated effective pair potentials are consistent with data from microscale simulations and analytical formulas.

The soft-core boson system is one of the simplest models of supersolids, which have both off-diagonal long-range order (Bose-Einstein condensation) and diagonal long-range order (crystalline order). Although this model has been studied from various points of view, studies of the stability of current-flowing states are lacking. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov equations, we obtain excitation spectra in superfluid, supersolid, and stripe phases. On the basis of the results of the excitation spectra, we present a stability phase diagram that shows the region of the metastable superflow states for each phase.

Using dynamical density functional theory we calculate the speed of solidification fronts advancing into a quenched two-dimensional model fluid of soft-core particles. We find that solidification fronts can advance via two different mechanisms, depending on the depth of the quench. For shallow quenches, the front propagation is via a nonlinear mechanism. For deep quenches, front propagation is governed by a linear mechanism and in this regime we are able to determine the front speed via a marginal stability analysis. We find that the density modulations generated behind the advancing front have a characteristic scale that differs from the wavelength of the density modulation in thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e., the spacing between the crystal planes in an equilibrium crystal. This leads to the subsequent development of disorder in the solids that are formed. For the one-component fluid, the particles are able to rearrange to form a well-ordered crystal, with few defects. However, solidification fronts in a binary mixture exhibiting crystalline phases with square and hexagonal ordering generate solids that are unable to rearrange after the passage of the solidification front and a significant amount of disorder remains in the system.

The recent realization of spin-orbit coupling in atomic gases provides a new perspective to study quantum states with chirality. Here we demonstrate that the combined effects of spin-orbit coupling and interatomic soft-core interaction can induce an exotic supersolid phase, in which the chiral symmetry is broken and accompanied by the spontaneous emergence of circulating particle current. This implies that a finite angular momentum is generated in a non-rotating frame. More surprisingly, it is found that the direction of the angular momentum can be altered by adjusting the strengths of spin-orbit coupling or interatomic interaction. The predicted chiral supersolid phase can be experimentally observed in Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling.

Isotropic soft-core potentials with two characteristic length scales have been used since 40 years to describe systems with polymorphism. In the recent years intense research is showing that these potentials also display polyamorphism and several anomalies, including structural, diffusion and density anomaly. These anomalies occur in a hierarchy that resembles the anomalies of water. However, the absence of directional bonding in these isotropic potentials makes them different from water. Other systems, such as colloidal suspensions, protein solutions or liquid metals, can be well described by these family of potentials, opening the possibility of studying the mechanism generating the polyamorphism and anomalies in these complex liquids.

To study the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase transition, we analyze a three-dimensional soft-core isotropic potential for a one-component system. We utilize two independent numerical approaches, (i) integral equation in the hypernetted-chain approximation and (ii) molecular dynamics simulations, and find for both approaches a fluid-fluid phase transition as well as the conventional gas-liquid critical point. We also study the possible existence of a triple point in the supercooled fluid phase at which three phases---gas, high-density fluid, and low-density fluid---coexist.

This paper focus on the implementations of Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithms on Microblaze soft core Processor and also their implementations on XC6VLX240t FPGA using Verilog Hardware Description language. This paper also gives a comparison of the issues related to the hardware and software implementations of the two cryptographic algorithms.

Soft skills play a vital role for providing excellent customer service in the healthcare setting. This study aims to develop and assess the instrument validity and reliability before measuring the levels of soft skills competency and core value internalization on staffs at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @International Islamic University Malaysia (SASMEC@IIUM). A self-assessment questionnaire was developed through three phases. The first phase involved reviewing and identifying relevant literatures and existing soft skills assessment instruments through bibliographic searches and expert consultations. A conceptual model was then established based on the selected conceptual frameworks after determining all relevant soft skill domains. The second phase involved generating relevant items, removing duplicate or irrelevant items, and appraising the content validity by three experts. The third phase was data collection, wherein the finalized instrument was distributed to 32 staff of SASMEC@IIUM via google forms. The instrument reliability was investigated through internal consistency reliability or Cronbach’s alpha, with all items, except for the construct ‘gratitude’, achieving acceptable values by exceeding the threshold value of 0.7. Subsequently, two gratitude items were removed from the questionnaire. The current instrument and theoretical framework employed in the self-assessment questionnaire development are valid and reliable for the actual application.

Soft-core attractive potentials can give rise to a phase diagram with three fluid phases at different densities (gas, low-density liquid and high-density liquid), separated by first order phase transition lines ending in critical points. Experiments show a phase diagram with these features for phosphorous and triphenyl-phosphite. Liquid-liquid phase transition could be relevant for water, silica, liquid metals, colloids and protein solutions, among others. Here we compare two potentials with short-range soft-core repulsion and narrow attraction. One of them is a squared potential that is known to have liquid-liquid phase transition, ending in a critical point, and no anomaly in density. The normal, monotonic, behavior of density for isobaric cooling is surprising if compared with molecular liquids, such as water, where a hypothetical critical point is proposed as rationale for the anomalous behavior of density. The second potential is a continuous version of the first. We show that the phase diagram associated to this new potential has, not only the liquid-liquid phase transition, but also the density anomaly. Our result, therefore, shows that the behavior in density is strongly dependent on the derivative of the potential.

Context. Transient neutrino sources such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and Supernovae (SNe) are hypothesized to emit bursts of high-energy neutrinos on a time-scale of \lesssim 100 s. While GRB neutrinos would be produced in high relativistic jets, core-collapse SNe might host soft-relativistic jets, which become stalled in the outer layers of the progenitor star leading to an efficient production of high-energy neutrinos. Aims. To increase the sensitivity to these neutrinos and identify their sources, a low-threshold optical follow-up program for neutrino multiplets detected with the IceCube observatory has been implemented. Methods. If a neutrino multiplet, i.e. two or more neutrinos from the same direction within 100 s, is found by IceCube a trigger is sent to the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment, ROTSE. The 4 ROTSE telescopes immediately start an observation program of the corresponding region of the sky in order to detect an optical counterpart to the neutrino events. Results. No statistically significant excess in the rate of neutrino multiplets has been observed and furthermore no coincidence with an optical counterpart was found. Conclusion. The search allows, for the first time, to set stringent limits on current models predicting a high-energy neutrino flux from soft relativistic hadronic jets in core-collapse SNe. We conclude that a sub-population of SNe with typical Lorentz boost factor and jet energy of 10 and 3\times10^{51} erg, respectively, does not exceed 4.2% at 90% confidence.

Abstract More than 40 years ago, Andreev, Lifshitz and Chester suggested the possible existence of a peculiar solid phase of matter, the microscopic constituents of which can flow superfluidly without resistance due to the formation of zero-point defects in the ground state of self-assembled crystals. Yet, a physical system where this mechanism is unambiguously established remains to be found, both experimentally and theoretically. Here we investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional bosons with finite-range soft-core interactions. For low particle densities, the system is shown to feature a solid phase in which zero-point vacancies emerge spontaneously and give rise to superfluid flow of particles through the crystal. This provides the first example of defect-induced, continuous-space supersolidity consistent with the Andreev–Lifshitz–Chester scenario.

We perform numerical simulations to determine the shear stress and pressure of steady-state shear flow in a soft-disk model in two dimensions at zero temperature in the vicinity of the jamming transition \phi_J. We use critical point scaling analyses to determine the critical behavior at jamming, and we find that it is crucial to include corrections to scaling for a reliable analysis. We find that the relative size of these corrections are much smaller for pressure than for shear stress. We furthermore find a superlinear behavior for pressure and shear stress above \phi_J, both from the scaling analysis and from a direct analysis of pressure data extrapolated to the limit of vanishing shear rate.

The Nijmegen extended-sft-core ESC08c model for the baryon-baryon (BB) interactions of the SU(3) flavor-octet of baryons ($N, \Lambda, \Sigma$, and $\Xi$) is presented. In this first of a series of papers, the NN results are reported in detail. In the spirit of the Yukawa-approach to the nuclear force problem, the interactions are studied from the meson-exchange picture viewpoint, using generalized soft-core Yukawa-functions. These interactions are supplemented with (i) multiple-gluon-exchange, and (ii) structural effects due to the quark-core of the baryons. The extended-soft-core (ESC) meson-exchange interactions consist of local- and non-local-potentials due to ((i) One-boson-exchanges (OBE, which are the members of nonets of pseudoscalar , vector, scalar, and axial-vector mesons, (ii) diffractive (i.e. multiple-gluon) exchanges, (iii) two pseudoscalar exchange (PS-PS), and (iv) meson-pair-exchange (MPE). The OBE- and MPE-vertices are regulated by gaussian form factors producing potentials with a soft behavior near the origin. The assignment of the cut-off masses for the BBM-vertices is dependent on the SU(3)-classification of the exchanged mesons for OBE, and a similar scheme for MPE. The simultaneous fit of the ESC-models to the NN- and YN-scattering data achieved excellent results for the NN, YN, and favorable properties for the $\Lambda\Lambda$ and $\Xi N$ systems. In the case of ESC08c, the version of this paper, the results are: (i) For the selected 4313 pp and np scattering data ($ 0 \leq T_{lab} \leq 350$ MeV), the model achieved $\chi^2/N_{data} = 1.08$. (ii) The deuteron binding energy and all NN low energy parameters are fitted very nicely. (iii) The YN-data are described also very well with $\chi^/N_{data} = 1.09$. (iv) The model predicts a bound $\Xi N(^3S_1,I=1)$ states with binding energy 1.56 MeV.

Using density functional theory we calculate the density profiles of a binary solvent adsorbed around a pair of big solute particles. All species interact via repulsive Gaussian potentials. The solvent exhibits fluid-fluid phase separation and for thermodynamic states near to coexistence the big particles can be surrounded by a thick adsorbed `wetting' film of the coexisting solvent phase. On reducing the separation between the two big particles we find there can be a `bridging' transition as the wetting films join to form a fluid bridge. The potential between the two big particles becomes long ranged and strongly attractive in the bridged configuration. Within our mean-field treatment the bridging transition results in a discontinuity in the solvent mediated force. We demonstrate that accounting for the phenomenon of bridging requires the presence of a non-zero bridge function in the correlations between the solute particles when our model fluid is described within a full mixture theory based upon the Ornstein-Zernike equations.

We present high resolution Halpha rotation curves of 4 late-type dwarf galaxies and 2 low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) for which accurate HI rotation curves are available from the literature. Observations are carried out at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For LSB F583-1 an innovative dispersing element was used, the Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) with a dispersion of about 0.35 A/pxl. We find good agreement between the Halpha data and the HI observations and conclude that the HI data for these galaxies suffer very little from beam smearing. We show that the optical rotation curves of these dark matter dominated galaxies are best fitted by the Burkert profile. In the centers of galaxies, where the N-body simulations predict cuspy cores and fast rising rotation curves, our data seem to be in better agreement with the presence of soft cores.

We compare UV spectra of the recent soft X-ray transients XTE J1118+480 and XTE J1859+226. The emission line strengths in XTE J1118+480 strongly suggest that the accreting material has been CNO processed. We show that this system must have come into contact with a secondary star of about 1.5 solar masses, and an orbital period ~15hr, very close to the bifurcation value at which nuclear and angular momentum loss timescales are similar. Subsequent evolution to the current period of 4.1 hr was driven by angular momentum loss. In passing through a period of 7.75 hr the secondary star would have shown essentially normal surface abundances. XTE J1118+480 could thus represent a slightly later evolutionary stage of A0620-00. We briefly discuss the broad Ly alpha absorption wings in XTE J1118+480.

Abstract Background: Biopsy is a crucial step within the diagnostic cascade in patients with suspected bone or soft tissue sarcoma. Open biopsy is still considered the gold standard. However, recent literature suggests similar results for percutaneous biopsy techniques. Therefore, the aim of this retrospective analysis was to compare open and percutaneous core needle biopsy (CNB) regarding their accuracy in diagnosis of malignant musculoskeletal lesions. Methods: From January 2007 to December 2009, all patients with suspected malignant primary bone or soft tissue tumour undergoing a percutaneous CNB or open biopsy and a subsequent tumour resection at our department were identified and enrolled. Sensitivities, specificities, positive predictive values (PPV), negative predictive values (NPV) and diagnostic accuracy were calculated for both biopsy techniques and compared using Fisher’s exact test. Results: A total of 77 patients were identified and enrolled in this study. Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and diagnostic accuracy were 100% for CNB in bone tumours. Sensitivity (95.5%), NPV (91.7%) and diagnostic accuracy (93.3%) for open biopsy in bone tumours showed slightly inferior results without statistical significance (p > 0.05). In soft tissue tumours favourable results were obtained in open biopsies compared to CNB with differences regarding sensitivity (100% vs. 81.8%, p = 0.5), NPV (100% vs. 50%, p = 0.09) and diagnostic accuracy (100% vs. 84.6%, p = 0,19) without statistical significance. The overall diagnostic accuracy was 92.9% for CNB and 98.0% for open biopsy (p = 0.55). A specific diagnosis could be obtained in 84.2% and 93.9%, respectively (p = 0.34). Conclusion: In our study we found moderately inferior results for the percutaneous biopsy technique compared to open biopsy in soft tissue tumours whereas almost equal results were obtained for both biopsy techniques for bone tumours. Thus, CNB is a safe, minimal invasive and cost-effective technique for diagnosing bony lesions. In soft tissue masses, the indication for percutaneous core needle biopsy needs to be made carefully by an experienced orthopaedic oncologist with respect to the suspected entity, size of necrosis and location of the lesion to avoid incorrect or deficient results.

Limited experimental data exists for the specific core loss and dynamic B-H loops for soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high frequency and high temperature. This experimental study investigates the specific core loss and dynamic B-H loop characteristics of Supermalloy and Metglas 2605SC over the frequency range of 1 to 50 kHz and temperature range of 23 to 300 C under sinusoidal voltage excitation. The experimental setup used to conduct the investigation is described. The effects of the maximum magnetic flux density, frequency, and temperature on the specific core loss and on the size and shape of the B-H loops are examined.

The optically induced oscillatory response of a spherical two-component, shell-core structured, nanoparticle by nodeless elastic vibrations of soft peripheral shell against hard and dynamically immobile inner core is considered. The eigenfrequencies of the even-parity, spheroidal and odd-parity torsional vibrational modes trapped in the finite-depth shell are obtained which are of practical interest for modal specification of individual resonances in spectra of resonant scattering of long wavelength electromagnetic waves by ultrafine particles.

Using event driven molecular dynamics simulations, we study a three dimensional one-component system of spherical particles interacting via a discontinuous potential combining a repulsive square soft core and an attractive square well. In the case of a narrow attractive well, it has been shown that this potential has two metastable gas-liquid critical points. Here we systematically investigate how the changes of the parameters of this potential affect the phase diagram of the system. We find a broad range of potential parameters for which the system has both a gas-liquid critical point and a liquid-liquid critical point. For the liquid-gas critical point we find that the derivatives of the critical temperature and pressure, with respect to the parameters of the potential, have the same signs: they are positive for increasing width of the attractive well and negative for increasing width and repulsive energy of the soft core. This result resembles the behavior of the liquid-gas critical point for standard liquids. In contrast, for the liquid-liquid critical point the critical pressure decreases as the critical temperature increases. As a consequence, the liquid-liquid critical point exists at positive pressures only in a finite range of parameters. We present a modified van der Waals equation which qualitatively reproduces the behavior of both critical points within some range of parameters, and give us insight on the mechanisms ruling the dependence of the two critical points on the potential's parameters. The soft core potential studied here resembles model potentials used for colloids, proteins, and potentials that have been related to liquid metals, raising an interesting possibility that a liquid-liquid phase transition may be present in some systems where it has not yet been observed.

The $\pi N$ potential includes the t-channel exchanges of the scalar-mesons $\sigma$ and f_0, vector-meson $\rho$, tensor-mesons f_2 and f_2' and the Pomeron as well as the s- and u-channel exchanges of the nucleon N and the resonances $\Delta$, Roper and S_{11}. These resonances are not generated dynamically. We consider them as, at least partially, genuine three-quark states and we treat them in the same way as the nucleon. The latter two resonances were needed to find the proper behavior of the phase shifts at higher energies in the corresponding partial waves. The soft-core $\pi N$-model gives an excellent fit to the empirical $\pi N$ S- and P-wave phase shifts up to T_{lab}=600 MeV. Also the scattering lengths have been reproduced well and the soft-pion theorems for low-energy $\pi N$ scattering are satisfied. The soft-core model for the $K^+ N$ interaction is an SU_f(3)-extension of the soft-core $\pi N$-model. The $K^+ N$ potential includes the t-channel exchanges of the scalar-mesons a_0, $\sigma$ and f_0, vector-mesons $\rho$, $\omega$ and $\phi$, tensor-mesons a_2, f_2 and f_2' and the Pomeron as well as u-channel exchanges of the hyperons $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$. The fit to the empirical $K^+ N$ S-, P- and D-wave phase shifts up to T_{lab}=600 MeV is reasonable and certainly reflects the present state of the art. Since the various $K^+ N$ phase shift analyses are not very consistent, also scattering observables are compared with the soft-core $K^+ N$-model. A good agreement for the total and differential cross sections as well as the polarizations is found.

For the family of model soft Coulomb potentials represented by V(r) = -\frac{Z}{(r^q+\beta^q)^{\frac{1}{q}}}, with the parameters Z>0, \beta>0, q \ge 1, it is shown analytically that the potentials and eigenvalues, E_{\nu\ell}, are monotonic in each parameter. The potential envelope method is applied to obtain approximate analytic estimates in terms of the known exact spectra for pure power potentials. For the case q =1, the Asymptotic Iteration Method is used to find exact analytic results for the eigenvalues E_{\nu\ell} and corresponding wave functions, expressed in terms of Z and \beta. A proof is presented establishing the general concavity of the scaled electron density near the nucleus resulting from the truncated potentials for all q. Based on an analysis of extensive numerical calculations, it is conjectured that the crossing between the pair of states [(\nu,\ell),(\nu',\ell')], is given by the condition \nu'\geq (\nu+1) and \ell' \geq (\ell+3). The significance of these results for the interaction of an intense laser field with an atom is pointed out. Differences in the observed level-crossing effects between the soft potentials and the hydrogen atom confined inside an impenetrable sphere are discussed.
