2DTIC ADA483454: Data Strategies To Support Automated Multi-Sensor Data Fusion In A Service Oriented Architecture
By Defense Technical Information Center
The quantity of data available to decision makers of various types is rapidly expanding beyond the pace of manual interpretation techniques (Hobbins, 1). Introducing a Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) based web service framework that exposes even more data without sufficient guidance will exacerbate the situation. Ontology's, data descriptions and discovery methods alone are not enough to create the end-to-end solutions promised by SOA technologies. Software architectural patterns in conjunction with broad data strategies are required to harness and employ vast quantities of content. This dissertation provides two software architectural patterns and an auto-fusion process that guide the development of a distributed, accountable and scalable SOA framework to support improved control and monitoring software. Although applicable to a wide range of software control system challenges, the dissertation will focus on a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) interoperability challenges. Using the U.S. Navy's MDA project as a case study, this dissertation will design, build and test a prototype automated data fusion framework employing the trickle-up and Command and Control Zone pattern that automates the discovery, pedigree assessment and ultimate fusion of dissimilar data types in a SOA web-service supported framework.

6DTIC ADA550101: Phoenix: Service Oriented Architecture For Information Management The Fawkes Cursor-on-Target Router
By Defense Technical Information Center
Cursor-on-Target (CoT) is a strategy for enabling DoD systems to communicate much needed time sensitive position or What, When, Where (WWW) information. CoT leverages the ubiquitous XML technology and defines a common, terse yet extensible message format for communicating WWW information. A data strategy akin to object oriented decomposition is used to define and manage extensions to the base WWW data. Using this approach CoT can easily and effectively represent BFT, TST, mayday messages, CSAR reports, spot reports, ISR asset tasking, battlefield reservations, and many other tactical battlefield information exchange needs.

8Service-oriented Architecture Approach To MAGTF Logistics Support Systems
By Sierra, Frank
Legacy logistics systems are an antiquated technology and fall short of providing the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with modern, net-centric, expeditionary Logistics Chain Management (LCM) and Command and Control (C2) capabilities. The Marine Corps owns more than 200 logistics information systems. While some of these systems still perform critical functions, others are stove-piped, redundant, or no longer provide an adequate modern capability. Managing legacy assets and interim technologies while concurrently developing new long-term enterprise solutions is required in order to provide the Marine Corps with the necessary logistics information technology capabilities. The envisioned future end state is logistics data shared across the MAGTF, and ultimately, across the entire organization. A shared-data environment, populated by autonomic computing, will provide actionable logistics data to everyone in the MAGTF, from the warehouse to the warfighter position, in near real-time. Common systems supporting common techniques, tactics and procedures which equal significantly improved capabilities. The goal of this research is to envision a set of common information technology capabilities required to execute LCM missions without considering the current limitations provided by existing legacy or MLS2 information technology systems. This research will focus on implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach to the MLS2 and related processes that will initiate to improve support to the decision-makers and the warfighters across the enterprise. The key end state at hand is to determine a mutually exclusive and comprehensive set of common MLS2 information technology capabilities required to execute C2 for Logistics and LCMs missions.

9A Comprehensive Comparative Study Of MOM For Adaptive Interoperability Communications In Service Oriented Architecture
By Najhan Muhamad Ibrahim | Mohd Fadzil Hassan
Numerous software platforms have developed to support several application systems with a variety of techniques and solution. The communications between those platforms are required to ensure tasks distributed across different application systems. The collaboration between distinct application systems to grow, in tandem with the growth of SOA in which the resources of each SOA application might be developed and implemented using different standard and specification. Within this context, interoperability communications is significant to consolidate the optimization of these resources. Additionally, identifying the requirements attribute related to interoperability communications are the first step required in the development of interoperability communications. MOM can be considered as a tool for enabling the communications between distributed applications where the transaction or event notifications are delivered between distributed applications through the message. MOM provides a program to program connection by message passing. Most of the MOM environments are implemented using queued message store and forward capability, which is Message Queuing Middleware MQM . In addition, an adaptive interoperability communications can be defined as the computer system that enables self coordination to distribute computing resources and an adaptive to the new environment while hiding fundamental complexity from the operators and users. The intelligent system has the capability of self management to overcome the rapidly growing complexity in computing systems. The system makes decisions on its own by using the rules that have been identified. Intelligent system also provides an adaptive and dynamic environment for the process of communication. The framework of an intelligent system, fundamentally consists of intelligent elements. Each element performs a fixed function and interacting with other elements in a very dynamic environment. 10DTIC ADA543986: The Failures And Promises Of An Operational Service-Oriented Architecture: The ROI Of Operational Effectiveness In Addition To Acquisition Efficiency At The Navy's Op Level Of War
By Defense Technical Information Center
This paper and presentation will share four years of research by the Naval War College into the operational requirements for a service-oriented architecture (SOA) for the Navy's operational level of war applied at the Navy's Maritime Operations Centers (MOCs). It will also argue that the cost-benefit analysis for SOA must be the improved operational effectiveness of the organization, not just the lower costs of data management and reduced redundancies of legacy systems. It will share a model for such an evaluation, and a model for proper protocols and data management for implementation. This paper argues that the proper cost-benefit analysis of service-oriented architecture is not possible without an operational integrated architecture that explicitly captures the role-based decision making protocols mapped to the core operational and enterprise-wide processes necessary to improve operational effectiveness. This paper and presentation will share this research and its direct application to the design and implementation of SOA for the Navy's Operational Level of War.

11DTIC ADA556743: A Service Oriented Architecture For Robotic Platforms
By Defense Technical Information Center
Existing architectures, infrastructures, and frameworks for robotic systems have limited utility when used in the context of integration. This limited utility derives from either a narrow scope assigned to the architecture or a lack of application of generally accepted software engineering principles for integration. Commercial development strategies utilizing well-defined software architectural principles are frequently at odds with how typical robotic software architectures are designed. This inherent conflict results in resource consumption on integration work in projects where integration is not the primary goal. Moving results out of the laboratory and into the commercial domain becomes difficult. In this thesis, I present an architecture based on a clear definition of software architecture, an understanding of the stakeholders for the architecture, those stakeholder interests, and the use of accepted principles of software architecture definition and design. A software architecture is constructed around the viewpoint that a robotic system can be considered an enterprise and everything associated with that enterprise provides a service. This enterprise perspective leads to the description of a service oriented architecture (SOA), which provides integration flexibility while satisfying stakeholder requirements and interests. I construct an implementation approach embodying these principles and apply that implementation approach to real world integration problems to illustrate the utility of such an approach in robotic software development. Finally, I define a set of metrics to be used when comparing the SOA approach with other architectures for integration on robotic systems.

12DTIC ADA489853: SMART: Analyzing The Reuse Potential Of Legacy Components In A Service-Oriented Architecture Environment
By Defense Technical Information Center
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has become an increasingly popular mechanism for achieving interoperability between systems. Because it has characteristics of loose coupling, published interfaces, and a standard communication model, SOA enables existing legacy systems to expose their functionality as services, presumably without making significant changes to the legacy systems. Migration of legacy systems to service-oriented environments has been achieved within a number of domains including banking, electronic payment, and development tools showing that the promise is beginning to be fulfilled. While migration can have significant value, any specific migration requires a concrete analysis of the feasibility, risk, and cost involved. This technical note describes a new release of the Service Migration and Reuse Technique (SMART), which was initially developed in 2005. The Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI) SMART process helps organizations to make initial decisions about the feasibility of reusing legacy components as services within an SOA environment. SMART considers the specific interactions that will be required by the target SOA environment and any changes that must be made to the legacy components. To achieve this, SMART gathers information about legacy components, the target SOA environment, and candidate services to produce (1) a preliminary analysis of the viability of migrating legacy components to services, (2) an analysis of the migration strategies available, and (3) preliminary estimates of the costs and risks involved in the migration.

15DTIC ADA530183: Meaningful Cost-Benefit Analysis For Service-Oriented Architecture Projects
By Defense Technical Information Center
This paper argues that proper cost-benefit analysis of service-oriented architecture projects is not possible without explicit identification of SOA-specific tasks in the work breakdown structure (WBS), so that those costs are explicitly estimated in the budget, are explicitly in the integrated master schedule, and appear on earned value and other reports. It deconstructs the traditional stories for financially justifying SOA and identifies SOA-specific activities that should be added to WBSs to enable tracking of costs and schedules. It also identifies specific research questions that can only be answered with data gathered through such task-level cost accounting.

17DTIC ADA590710: Service-Oriented Architecture Approach To MAGTF Logistics Support Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
The key end state at hand is to determine a mutually exclusive and comprehensive set of common MLS2 information technology capabilities required to execute C2 for Logistics and LCM's missions.

22DTIC ADA570837: Examination Of A Capabilities-based Prioritization Scheme For Service-Oriented Architecture Afloat
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Navy has mandated that fielded computer systems be network-centric, service-based, and support open architectures. However, this competency is limited by network resources-namely radio frequency bandwidth-which the Navy has at its disposal. This forces decisions to be made in which some network applications take priority over others. We apply the Capabilities-based Competency Assessment process developed by Suttie and Potter to create a prioritization model for this problem of limited bandwidth. DoD Architectural Framework Version 1.5 products are used to construct an architectural description for a carrier strike-group underway, capturing each of the operational nodes working within an air detect-to-engage scenario. By linking the tasking assigned to each of these nodes and the services required for their completion, resources may be aligned to support warfare commander's intent and develop a prioritization which optimizes network performance for this tasking. Through network simulation, a comparison is made between the proposed prioritization scheme and traditional schemes. Results show our prioritization scheme consistently reduced latency and increased throughput for mission relevant applications. These improvements translate directly to more relevant information getting to decision makers at a quickened pace. Such information richness leads to information dominance, ultimately providing superior warfighting capability.

23DTIC ADA467111: Service Oriented Architecture For Coast Guard Command And Control
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Coast Guard's software architecture does not meet the organization's needs for information sharing or command and control. The Commandant of the Coast Guard recently mandated the implementation of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to address this problem. This thesis describes a Service Oriented Architecture for Coast Guard Command and Control that integrates legacy applications and provides new capabilities. Traditional software architecture descriptions make it difficult to identify and understand the trade-offs between quality attributes that are inherent in the design. We clarify these critical issues by using multiple scenarios and use cases, in addition to diagrams and functionality requirements. Defining the architecture in this manner enables an auditor to determine the architecture's validity. The Coast Guard also needs a plan to implement this SOA. This thesis defines a process that will deliver value in the form of usable capabilities in an incremental manner. It recognizes the constantly changing nature of both the problem and the necessary solution, and evolves accordingly. It continually plans for, adapts to, and exploits predictable advances in technology to deliver more value. The iterative method we propose includes cyclical evaluation of the system requirements, architecture, and implementation to provide continuous improvement.

By Defense Technical Information Center
The object of the Tactical SOA project is to develop, assess and understand the application of technologies and protocols to bring the benefits of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to tactical environments, and investigate and quantify the network burden and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for SOA implementation in a variety of tactical environments. Through baselined experimentation, this effort will determine how far to the tactical edge enterpriselike SOA can be supported, and as necessary, will implement a reduced SOA capability that works effectively in defense networks that provide low data rates and/or high latency.

By Defense Technical Information Center
Modern weapon systems (including all space systems) are software-intensive, technology-driven systems; consequently, the early evaluation of software technologies is critical. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a promising approach to implement Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) and Joint Warfighting Space (JWS). SOA qualifies as a Critical Technology Element (CTE), and as such requires a rigorous Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) inquiry.

26DTIC ADA593537: On The Design Of A Comprehensive Authorisation Framework For Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
By Defense Technical Information Center
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has attracted considerable industry attention because of the benefits it offers such as allowing interoperability over a heterogeneous environment, amongst others. However, security is one of the main roadblocks for enterprises when it comes to the development and deployment of their SOAs. Although there are several SOA security standards available, there is as yet no standard available for SOA authorisation. In this report, we propose a comprehensive authorisation framework for SOA.

29DTIC ADA534109: Conceptual Design And Analysis Of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) For Command And Control Of Space Assets
By Defense Technical Information Center
The mission-unique model that has dominated the DoD satellite Command and Control community is costly and inefficient. It requires repeatedly ?reinventing? established common C2 components for each program, unnecessarily inflating budgets and delivery schedules. The effective utilization of standards is scarce, and proprietary, non-open solutions are commonplace. IT professionals have trumpeted Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) as the solution to large enterprise situations where multiple, functionally redundant but non-compatible information systems create large recurring development, test, maintenance, and tech refresh costs. This thesis describes the current state of Service Oriented Architectures as related to satellite operations and presents a functional analysis used to classify a set of generic C2 services. By assessing the candidate services? suitability through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis, several C2 functionalities are shown to be more ready than others to be presented as services in the short term. Lastly, key enablers are identified, pinpointing the necessary steps for a full and complete transition from the paradigm of costly mission-unique implementations to the common, interoperable, and reusable space C2 SOA called for by DoD senior leaders.

32DTIC ADA544750: Service-oriented Reasoning Architecture For Resource-Task Assignment In Sensor Networks
By Defense Technical Information Center
The net-centric ISR/ISTAR networks are expected to play a crucial role in the success of critical tasks such as base perimeter protection, border patrol and so on. To accomplish these tasks in an effective and expedient manner, it is important that these networks have the embedded capabilities to discover, delegate, and gather relevant information in a timely and robust manner. In this paper, we present a system architecture and an implementation that combines a service based reasoning mechanism with a sensor middleware infrastructure so that tasks can be executed efficiently and effectively. A knowledge base, utilising the Semantic Web technologies, provides the foundation for reasoning mechanism that assists users to discover, identify and allocate resources that are made available through the middleware, in order to satisfy the needs of tasks. Once resources are allocated to any given task, they can be accessed, controlled, shared, and their data feeds consumed through the Fabric middleware. We use the semantic descriptions from the knowledge base to annotate the resources (types capabilities, etc.) in the sensor middleware so that they can be retrieved for reasoning during the discovery and identification phases.

34DTIC ADA463317: Integrating Multilevel Command And Control Into A Service Oriented Architecture To Provide Cross Domain Capability
By Defense Technical Information Center
Information superiority, the capability to collect, process, and disseminate an uninterrupted flow of information, is the cornerstone of Command and Control (C2). With the increasing coalition and multinational aspects of warfare in the 21st century, we must extend key information to our allies and coalition partners to ensure shared information dominance. Traditional information sharing methods such as automated guards or a man-in-the-loop has well documented problems including data loss through the guards and operational picture integrity. A multilevel C2 system has been developed and deployed that allows a multinational integrated operational picture to be maintained and disseminated by US Intelligence Analysts. This system leverages the capability of a trusted operating system by storing all data in labeled files and using the operating system to enforce access control. This approach is difficult to extend to a service oriented architecture (SOA) because SOA infrastructures are large, complex entities that are not multilevel. In this paper, we address the issues associated with integrating an existing multilevel C2 system into a larger service oriented architecture. We present an architecture that can be generalized to integrate other MLS systems. We then propose a future architecture which addresses the limitations in the current system.

39Case Studies: Business And Technical Perspectives In Migration Of Legacy Systems To Service Oriented Architecture
By Maulahikmah Galinium and Negar Shahbaz
In adoption process of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), the legacy systems of a company can not be neglected. The reason is the legacy systems have been deployed in the past and have been running critical business processes within an enterprise in its current IT architecture. However not all migration process of legacy systems to SOA has been successfull. Highlighting the right factors to reach legacy systems migration success in a specific company is the key value. The main adopted research method in this study has been interviewed for different companies with different enterprises including bank, furniture, engineering and airline companies in Europe. Through separate interviews, critical success factors of migrating legacy systems into SOA have been collected and identified in each case company. Finally collected results are analyzed and presented as the recognized factors affecting successful migration of legacy assets into SOA from business and technical perspectives.

40DTIC ADA486818: Employing Service Oriented Architecture Technologies To Bind A Thousand Ship Navy
By Defense Technical Information Center
One of the United States Navy's strategic goals is to foster a thousand ship Navy, by combining the U.S. Navy with partners from around the globe. A critical requirement to join various Navies from such diverse backgrounds and technology levels is a simple, flexible, and economical Command and Control (C2) system that each stakeholder can employ and extend. Web-based Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) have potential to provide methods and technologies to aid in combining this force; however SOA technology alone will not deliver the desired software out-of-the-box. To truly reap the benefits of a SOA-based coalition C2 system, the U.S. defense acquisition community should host a coalition-based international C2 software development site, managed by developers and following the open source industry model. Built on proven industry standards and agreed upon software design patterns, the collaborative development site should encourage the development of scalable and flexible C2 systems to address maritime coalition C2 system requirements. This article will examine some coalition C2 system challenges and how SOA technologies can support interoperability. Additionally, the article will discuss two software design patterns that can aid maritime coalition software development and how those patterns employed in conjunction with a community of interest-open source software development framework can lead to C2 systems to bind a thousand ship Navy.

By Defense Technical Information Center
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural paradigm and its aim is to achieve a loose coupling amongst interacting distributed systems. SOA is used by enterprises to efficiently and cost-effectively integrate heterogeneous systems. However, SOA is affected by several security vulnerabilities, thus affecting the speed of its deployment in organisations. In this report, we describe some of the security threats faced by SOA systems and corresponding risk mitigation measures by means of security technology, standards and products.

43Service Oriented Architecture In Network Security - A Novel Organisation In Security Systems
By Michael Hilker and Christoph Schommer
Current network security systems are a collection of various security components, which are directly installed in the operating system. These check the whole node for suspicious behaviour. Armouring intrusions e.g. have the ability to hide themselves from being checked. We present in this paper an alternative organisation of security systems. The node is completely virtualized with current virtualization systems so that the operating system with applications and the security system is distinguished. The security system then checks the node from outside and the right security components are provided through a service oriented architecture. Due to the running in a virtual machine, the infected nodes can be halted, duplicated, and moved to other nodes for further analysis and legal aspects. This organisation is in this article analysed and a preliminary implementation showing promising results are discussed.

44NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20140008296: Service Oriented Robotic Architecture For Space Robotics: Design, Testing, And Lessons Learned
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper presents the lessons learned from six years of experiments with planetary rover prototypes running the Service Oriented Robotic Architecture (SORA) developed by the Intelligent Robotics Group (IRG) at the NASA Ames Research Center. SORA relies on proven software engineering methods and technologies applied to space robotics. Based on a Service Oriented Architecture and robust middleware, SORA encompasses on-board robot control and a full suite of software tools necessary for remotely operated exploration missions. SORA has been eld tested in numerous scenarios of robotic lunar and planetary exploration. The experiments conducted by IRG with SORA exercise a large set of the constraints encountered in space applications: remote robotic assets, ight relevant science instruments, distributed operations, high network latencies and unreliable or intermittent communication links. In this paper, we present the results of these eld tests in regard to the developed architecture, and discuss its bene ts and limitations.

46DTIC ADA528751: Service Level Agreements In Service-Oriented Architecture Environments
By Defense Technical Information Center
Quality attribute requirements play an important role in service selection in a service-oriented architecture environment. It is easy to envision finding several services that fulfill the functional requirements but fail to meet important quality attribute measures. Service level agreements provide the architect with a specification of the verifiable quality characteristics that the service will provide. Such a specification allows the architect to select the service that best supports the system's quality attribute requirements. This report surveys the state of practice in service level agreement specification and offers guidelines on how to assure that services are provided with high availability, security, performance, and other required qualities. In addition, this report discusses the quality properties that have been expressed in service level agreements, and it considers the mechanisms used to assure service quality by contract and those used by service providers to achieve and monitor quality properties. Also, this report examines the support for expressing service quality requirements in existing service technologies and describes areas where more research is needed.

50Microsoft Research Audio 104503: Predicting Tornados With Data Driven Workflows: Building A Service Oriented Grid Architecture For Mesoscale Meteorology Research
By Microsoft Research
Each year the loss of life and property due to mesoscale storms such as tornados and hurricanes is substantial. The current state of the art in predicting severe storms like tornados is based on static, fixed resolution forecast simulations and storm tracking with advanced radar. It is not good enough to accurately predict these storms with the accuracy needed to save lives. What is needed is the ability to do on-the-fly data mining of instrument data and to use the acquired information to launch adaptive workflows that can dynamically marshal resources to run ensembles simulations on-demand. These workflows need to be able to monitor the simulations and, where possible, retarget radars to gather more data to initialize higher resolution models that can focus the predictions. This scenario is not possible now, but it is the goal of the NSF LEAD project. To address these problems we have built a service oriented architecture that allows us to dynamically schedule remote data analysis and computational experiments. The Grid of resources used include machines at Indiana, Alabama, NCSA, Oklahoma, UNC and Ucar/Unidata, and soon Teragrid. The users gateway to the system is a web portal and a set of desktop client tools. Five primary persistent services are used to manage the workflows: a metadata repository called MyLEAD that keeps track of each users work, a WS-Eventing based pub-sub notification system, a BPEL based workflow engine, a web service registry for soft-state management of services and the portal server. An application factory service is used by the portal to create transient instances of the data mining and simulation applications that are orchestrated with the BPEL workflows. As the workflows execute they publish status metadata via the notification system to the users MyLEAD space. The talk will present several open research challenges that are common to many e-Science efforts. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
