1DTIC ADA486818: Employing Service Oriented Architecture Technologies To Bind A Thousand Ship Navy
By Defense Technical Information Center
One of the United States Navy's strategic goals is to foster a thousand ship Navy, by combining the U.S. Navy with partners from around the globe. A critical requirement to join various Navies from such diverse backgrounds and technology levels is a simple, flexible, and economical Command and Control (C2) system that each stakeholder can employ and extend. Web-based Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) have potential to provide methods and technologies to aid in combining this force; however SOA technology alone will not deliver the desired software out-of-the-box. To truly reap the benefits of a SOA-based coalition C2 system, the U.S. defense acquisition community should host a coalition-based international C2 software development site, managed by developers and following the open source industry model. Built on proven industry standards and agreed upon software design patterns, the collaborative development site should encourage the development of scalable and flexible C2 systems to address maritime coalition C2 system requirements. This article will examine some coalition C2 system challenges and how SOA technologies can support interoperability. Additionally, the article will discuss two software design patterns that can aid maritime coalition software development and how those patterns employed in conjunction with a community of interest-open source software development framework can lead to C2 systems to bind a thousand ship Navy.

4Service Oriented Architecture For Agriculture System Integration With Ontology
By 50SEA
Ontology is becoming a famous technique for converting unstructured data into meaningful data which acts as a key factor for decision-making, planning, and implementation in many areas, and agriculture is one of them. There are a lot of issues in agriculture practices e.g., farming, application of pesticides, and provision/ distribution of water to crops. However, some of the issues are critical and need to be resolved urgently to save cultivation from big hazards. In this paper, we have analyzed a few issues based on available literature. A variety of issues are faced in agriculture constantly and need to be resolved on an urgent basis. We have discussed the various ontology systems to acquire more precise results. Since ontology is based on a relation of data through which a user can get the maximum efficiency. Among all the challenges in agriculture, the lack of context-aware agriculture employs ontology with high concerns. This paper proposes a model to fill the gap in a service-oriented architecture.

5DTIC ADA633434: Common Misconceptions About Service-Oriented Architecture
By Defense Technical Information Center
You do not have to look far to become aware of the effect that SOA is having on software systems. Vendors are aggressively marketing hardware, soft- ware, tools, and services that support SOA implementation within organizations as diverse as the Department of Defense (DoD), banks, federal agencies, manufacturing companies, and health care providers. Even more significantly, customers are embracing SOA with the goal of reaching a previously unachievable level of interoperability and agility in business practices.

6Service Oriented Architecture In Network Security - A Novel Organisation In Security Systems
By Michael Hilker and Christoph Schommer
Current network security systems are a collection of various security components, which are directly installed in the operating system. These check the whole node for suspicious behaviour. Armouring intrusions e.g. have the ability to hide themselves from being checked. We present in this paper an alternative organisation of security systems. The node is completely virtualized with current virtualization systems so that the operating system with applications and the security system is distinguished. The security system then checks the node from outside and the right security components are provided through a service oriented architecture. Due to the running in a virtual machine, the infected nodes can be halted, duplicated, and moved to other nodes for further analysis and legal aspects. This organisation is in this article analysed and a preliminary implementation showing promising results are discussed.

9DTIC ADA467111: Service Oriented Architecture For Coast Guard Command And Control
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Coast Guard's software architecture does not meet the organization's needs for information sharing or command and control. The Commandant of the Coast Guard recently mandated the implementation of a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to address this problem. This thesis describes a Service Oriented Architecture for Coast Guard Command and Control that integrates legacy applications and provides new capabilities. Traditional software architecture descriptions make it difficult to identify and understand the trade-offs between quality attributes that are inherent in the design. We clarify these critical issues by using multiple scenarios and use cases, in addition to diagrams and functionality requirements. Defining the architecture in this manner enables an auditor to determine the architecture's validity. The Coast Guard also needs a plan to implement this SOA. This thesis defines a process that will deliver value in the form of usable capabilities in an incremental manner. It recognizes the constantly changing nature of both the problem and the necessary solution, and evolves accordingly. It continually plans for, adapts to, and exploits predictable advances in technology to deliver more value. The iterative method we propose includes cyclical evaluation of the system requirements, architecture, and implementation to provide continuous improvement.

10DTIC ADA590710: Service-Oriented Architecture Approach To MAGTF Logistics Support Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
Legacy logistics systems are an antiquated technology and fall short of providing the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with modern, net-centric, expeditionary Logistics Chain Management (LCM) and Command and Control (C2) capabilities. The Marine Corps owns more than 200 logistics information systems. While some of these systems still perform critical functions, others are stove-piped, redundant, or no longer provide an adequate modern capability. Managing legacy assets and interim technologies while concurrently developing new long-term enterprise solutions is required in order to provide the Marine Corps with the necessary logistics information technology capabilities. The envisioned future end state is logistics data shared across the MAGTF, and ultimately, across the entire organization. A shared-data environment, populated by autonomic computing, will provide actionable logistics data to everyone in the MAGTF, from the warehouse to the warfighter position, in near real-time. Common systems supporting common techniques, tactics and procedures which equal significantly improved capabilities. The goal of this research is to envision a set of common information technology capabilities required to execute LCM missions without considering the current limitations provided by existing legacy or MLS2 information technology systems. This research will focus on implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) approach to the MLS2 and related processes that will initiate to improve support to the decision-makers and the warfighters across the enterprise. The key end state at hand is to determine a mutually exclusive and comprehensive set of common MLS2 information technology capabilities required to execute C2 for Logistics and LCM's missions.

By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
This paper presents the lessons learned from six years of experiments with planetary rover prototypes running the Service Oriented Robotic Architecture (SORA) developed by the Intelligent Robotics Group (IRG) at the NASA Ames Research Center. SORA relies on proven software engineering methods and technologies applied to space robotics. Based on a Service Oriented Architecture and robust middleware, SORA encompasses on-board robot control and a full suite of software tools necessary for remotely operated exploration missions. SORA has been eld tested in numerous scenarios of robotic lunar and planetary exploration. The experiments conducted by IRG with SORA exercise a large set of the constraints encountered in space applications: remote robotic assets, ight relevant science instruments, distributed operations, high network latencies and unreliable or intermittent communication links. In this paper, we present the results of these eld tests in regard to the developed architecture, and discuss its bene ts and limitations.

17DTIC ADA570837: Examination Of A Capabilities-based Prioritization Scheme For Service-Oriented Architecture Afloat
By Defense Technical Information Center
The Navy has mandated that fielded computer systems be network-centric, service-based, and support open architectures. However, this competency is limited by network resources-namely radio frequency bandwidth-which the Navy has at its disposal. This forces decisions to be made in which some network applications take priority over others. We apply the Capabilities-based Competency Assessment process developed by Suttie and Potter to create a prioritization model for this problem of limited bandwidth. DoD Architectural Framework Version 1.5 products are used to construct an architectural description for a carrier strike-group underway, capturing each of the operational nodes working within an air detect-to-engage scenario. By linking the tasking assigned to each of these nodes and the services required for their completion, resources may be aligned to support warfare commander's intent and develop a prioritization which optimizes network performance for this tasking. Through network simulation, a comparison is made between the proposed prioritization scheme and traditional schemes. Results show our prioritization scheme consistently reduced latency and increased throughput for mission relevant applications. These improvements translate directly to more relevant information getting to decision makers at a quickened pace. Such information richness leads to information dominance, ultimately providing superior warfighting capability.

18Proof Of Concept Integration Of A Single-level Service-oriented Architecture Into A Multi-domain Secure Environment
By Gilkey, Craig M.
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) software has revolutionized data interchange in the business world. A SOA software platform integrates independent, unrelated applications into a common architecture, thereby introducing data reuse, interoperability, and loose coupling between the services involved. The U.S. Navy is currently experimenting with a SOA-based research portal called TACFIRE, or Tactical Applications for Collaboration in FIRE (FORCEnet Innovation and Research Enterprise). TACFIRE provides a set of lightweight, XML-based web services derived from the Oracle Collaboration Suite (OCS) 10g SOA. Such web services operating across multiple security domains would provide additional advantages, including improved intelligence aggregation, and real-time collaboration between users in different security domains. However, current TACFIRE implementations provide no multi-domain functionality between different classification levels. To date, the incorporation of a SOA software suite into a multilevel secure environment has neither been designed nor implemented. This project has explored how a SOA software suite could be integrated into a multilevel environment. The OCS 10g has been configured to run within the Monterey Security Architecture (MYSEA) multilevel testbed. This thesis addresses DOD requirements for building enterprise-level computing architecture capable of providing a full range of information services at all major security classifications and information handling caveats.

22Case Studies: Business And Technical Perspectives In Migration Of Legacy Systems To Service Oriented Architecture
By Maulahikmah Galinium and Negar Shahbaz
In adoption process of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), the legacy systems of a company can not be neglected. The reason is the legacy systems have been deployed in the past and have been running critical business processes within an enterprise in its current IT architecture. However not all migration process of legacy systems to SOA has been successfull. Highlighting the right factors to reach legacy systems migration success in a specific company is the key value. The main adopted research method in this study has been interviewed for different companies with different enterprises including bank, furniture, engineering and airline companies in Europe. Through separate interviews, critical success factors of migrating legacy systems into SOA have been collected and identified in each case company. Finally collected results are analyzed and presented as the recognized factors affecting successful migration of legacy assets into SOA from business and technical perspectives.

23DTIC ADA522530: A Research Agenda For Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): Maintenance And Evolution Of Service-Oriented Systems
By Defense Technical Information Center
Despite recent reports that it has failed, the reality is that Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) remains the best option available for systems integration and leverage of legacy systems. The technologies to implement SOA will certainly evolve to address emerging needs, but its concepts will remain. To address those needs and concerns that SOA is potentially being stretched beyond its limits, a significant and coordinated research program is needed. The SEI has developed an SOA Research Agenda with participation from a broad cross-section of the research community. The core of the agenda is a taxonomy that classifies topics into the business, engineering, and operations aspects of service-oriented systems, along with a set of cross-cutting aspects. Based on this taxonomy, the agenda outlines research areas, each of which is identified with its rationale, overview of current research, and delineation of research challenges and gaps. This report outlines the SOA Research Agenda. It also provides detail on specific re-search challenges related to the maintenance and evolution of service-oriented systems. The report concludes with a discussion of next steps in the evolution of the research agenda.

26NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20050082111: A Reliable Service-Oriented Architecture For NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The Collaborative Information Portal (CIP) was enterprise software developed jointly by the NASA Ames Research Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA's highly successful Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. Both MER and CIP have performed far beyond their original expectations. Mission managers and engineers ran CIP inside the mission control room at JPL, and the scientists ran CIP in their laboratories, homes, and offices. All the users connected securely over the Internet. Since the mission ran on Mars time, CIP displayed the current time in various Mars and Earth time zones, and it presented staffing and event schedules with Martian time scales. Users could send and receive broadcast messages, and they could view and download data and image files generated by the rovers' instruments. CIP had a three-tiered, service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on industry standards, including J2EE and web services, and it integrated commercial off-the-shelf software. A user's interactions with the graphical interface of the CIP client application generated web services requests to the CIP middleware. The middleware accessed the back-end data repositories if necessary and returned results for these requests. The client application could make multiple service requests for a single user action and then present a composition of the results. This happened transparently, and many users did not even realize that they were connecting to a server. CIP performed well and was extremely reliable; it attained better than 99% uptime during the course of the mission. In this paper, we present overviews of the MER mission and of CIP. We show how CIP helped to fulfill some of the mission needs and how people used it. We discuss the criteria for choosing its architecture, and we describe how the developers made the software so reliable. CIP's reliability did not come about by chance, but was the result of several key design decisions. We conclude with some of the important lessons we learned form developing, deploying, and supporting the software.

29Service Oriented Architecture For Coast Guard Command And Control
By Creigh, Robert H.
Defining the architecture in this manner enables an auditor to determine the architectures validity.

31DTIC ADA525840: Strategic Mobility 21. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Reference Model - Global Transportation Management System Architecture
By Defense Technical Information Center
The GTMS experiment, with the support of Dole Foods, is focused on the development of an integrated System-of-Systems (SoS) solution (that is a combination of different systems). The architecture used will be based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). This architecture is basically an approach that provides for the use of the Internet as an Enterprise Service Bus where various systems exchange data using standard protocols. Since the system is targeted for use by multiple commercial and military customers, it will be provided in the form of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), whereby a vendor can provide the user with the appropriate Internet access to the service, and the service is maintained by a central source. The experiment is meant to be of limited scope in the numbers of shipments, the distribution centers involved, and the number of distribution lanes involved. The data collected throughout the experiment will be processed based on various data messaging formats, which will provide the status of the shipment being monitored.

32ERIC ED557198: A Mobile Service Oriented Multiple Object Tracking Augmented Reality Architecture For Education And Learning Experiences
By ERIC
This paper describes the design of our service-oriented architecture to support mobile multiple object tracking augmented reality applications applied to education and learning scenarios. The architecture is composed of a mobile multiple object tracking augmented reality client, a web service framework, and dynamic content providers. Tracking of multiple real objects and retrieval of associated multiple media contents allows more complex augmented reality learning scenarios to be constructed that could improve students' knowledge and learning strategies on a mobile platform. It also allows students to create their own augmented reality learning environments and select preferences from acquired digital contents based on multiple object real scenes. Mobile users are able to request contextual digital contents from web service providers to augment these multiple objects in the real world. The digital contents are generally dynamically acquired digital media, e.g. 3D models, images, textual descriptive data, metadata, multimedia or even social media data. New digital contents for augmenting the real world are acquired through a service-oriented approach by accessing any appropriate web services to deliver that content to the augmented learning environment. 34DTIC ADA489853: SMART: Analyzing The Reuse Potential Of Legacy Components In A Service-Oriented Architecture Environment
By Defense Technical Information Center
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has become an increasingly popular mechanism for achieving interoperability between systems. Because it has characteristics of loose coupling, published interfaces, and a standard communication model, SOA enables existing legacy systems to expose their functionality as services, presumably without making significant changes to the legacy systems. Migration of legacy systems to service-oriented environments has been achieved within a number of domains including banking, electronic payment, and development tools showing that the promise is beginning to be fulfilled. While migration can have significant value, any specific migration requires a concrete analysis of the feasibility, risk, and cost involved. This technical note describes a new release of the Service Migration and Reuse Technique (SMART), which was initially developed in 2005. The Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI) SMART process helps organizations to make initial decisions about the feasibility of reusing legacy components as services within an SOA environment. SMART considers the specific interactions that will be required by the target SOA environment and any changes that must be made to the legacy components. To achieve this, SMART gathers information about legacy components, the target SOA environment, and candidate services to produce (1) a preliminary analysis of the viability of migrating legacy components to services, (2) an analysis of the migration strategies available, and (3) preliminary estimates of the costs and risks involved in the migration.

35DTIC ADA465985: Service-Oriented Architecture For Command And Control Systems With Dynamic Reconfiguration
By Defense Technical Information Center
Command and Control (C2) systems are evolving as warfighting is changing. Modern warfighting needs a dynamic, adaptable and agile force supported by rapidly changing technology. Three important C2 system characteristics are: survivability, rapid development and evaluation, and interoperability. This paper proposes a Service-Oriented Architecture with Dynamic Reconfiguration (SOADR) for the DoD enterprise C2 system. The proposed SOADR is an extension of the existing Web Services (WS) architecture popularized by Microsoft's NET platform. In addition, the proposed SOADR includes a framework for the dynamic reconfiguration of services thus the C2 system can continue to operate in spite of attacks or service malfunction. With the dynamic reconfiguration framework, individual service can be added, removed, and replaced at runtime without interruption of the system operations. The dynamic reconfiguration policy is governed by the C2 policies that may be obtained through the real-time COIs at runtime based on the information collected by situation-aware monitoring agents. The services are specified with scenario/ACDATE model and policies are specified using a formal specification language PSEL. A variety of service constraints such as survivability, security and performance can be verified and enforced at runtime through the proposed SOADR dynamic reconfiguration framework. This framework is also based on the standard protocols.

41Business Process Driven SOA Using BPMN And BPEL : From Business Process Modeling To Orchestration And Service Oriented Architecture
By Juric, Matjaz B
Cursor-on-Target (CoT) is a strategy for enabling DoD systems to communicate much needed time sensitive position or What, When, Where (WWW) information. CoT leverages the ubiquitous XML technology and defines a common, terse yet extensible message format for communicating WWW information. A data strategy akin to object oriented decomposition is used to define and manage extensions to the base WWW data. Using this approach CoT can easily and effectively represent BFT, TST, mayday messages, CSAR reports, spot reports, ISR asset tasking, battlefield reservations, and many other tactical battlefield information exchange needs.

43DTIC AD1014748: Migrating Legacy Assets To Service Oriented Architecture (SOA): A DoD Example
By Defense Technical Information Center
SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) offers significant potential for leveraging investments in legacy systems by providing a modern interface to existing capabilities, as well as exposing legacy functionality to a greater number of users. SMART (Service Migration and Reuse Technique) analyzes the viability of reusing legacy components as the basis for services by answering these questions: Does it make sense to migrate the legacy system to services? What services make sense to develop? What components can be mined to derive these services? What changes are needed to accomplish the migration? What migration strategies are most appropriate? What are the preliminary estimates of cost and risk?

45DTIC ADA488686: Leveraging Service Oriented Architecture To Enhance Information Sharing For Surface Transportation Security
By Defense Technical Information Center
This thesis determines the technology and architecture best suited for sharing security information among mass transit systems (MTS), their security partners, and TSA. The architecture would enable TSA to enhance the security of MTS and surface transportation. It incorporates existing security practices between MTS, their regional security partners, and TSA. Existing practices were determined through interviews and case reviews of regional information sharing networks. These were analyzed to identify gaps in information sharing practices and technology. Requirements for the architecture were established to close the gaps, accounting for the variability in size, capability, risk and ownership characteristics of MTS. A scalable architecture, adaptable to evolving homeland security requirements, and capable of exchanging information among disparate databases and formats was needed. Characteristics of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) were analyzed and found to fulfill these requirements. Technologies underlying SOA, including XML and web services, were reviewed to develop the understanding needed to create the architecture. An architecture was created for TSA consistent with its organization and business practices, and that of MTS and their stakeholders. Data exchange standards being developed by DHS were incorporated in the architecture. Collaboration and governance considerations for implementing SOA were briefly discussed.

46DTIC ADA528751: Service Level Agreements In Service-Oriented Architecture Environments
By Defense Technical Information Center
Quality attribute requirements play an important role in service selection in a service-oriented architecture environment. It is easy to envision finding several services that fulfill the functional requirements but fail to meet important quality attribute measures. Service level agreements provide the architect with a specification of the verifiable quality characteristics that the service will provide. Such a specification allows the architect to select the service that best supports the system's quality attribute requirements. This report surveys the state of practice in service level agreement specification and offers guidelines on how to assure that services are provided with high availability, security, performance, and other required qualities. In addition, this report discusses the quality properties that have been expressed in service level agreements, and it considers the mechanisms used to assure service quality by contract and those used by service providers to achieve and monitor quality properties. Also, this report examines the support for expressing service quality requirements in existing service technologies and describes areas where more research is needed.

48NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20080048185: Service-Oriented Architecture For NVO And TeraGrid Computing
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
The National Virtual Observatory (NVO) Extensible Secure Scalable Service Infrastructure (NESSSI) is a Web service architecture and software framework that enables Web-based astronomical data publishing and processing on grid computers such as the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid. Characteristics of this architecture include the following: (1) Services are created, managed, and upgraded by their developers, who are trusted users of computing platforms on which the services are deployed. (2) Service jobs can be initiated by means of Java or Python client programs run on a command line or with Web portals. (3) Access is granted within a graduated security scheme in which the size of a job that can be initiated depends on the level of authentication of the user.

50Microsoft Research Video 104503: Predicting Tornados With Data Driven Workflows: Building A Service Oriented Grid Architecture For Mesoscale Meteorology Research
By Microsoft Research
Each year the loss of life and property due to mesoscale storms such as tornados and hurricanes is substantial. The current state of the art in predicting severe storms like tornados is based on static, fixed resolution forecast simulations and storm tracking with advanced radar. It is not good enough to accurately predict these storms with the accuracy needed to save lives. What is needed is the ability to do on-the-fly data mining of instrument data and to use the acquired information to launch adaptive workflows that can dynamically marshal resources to run ensembles simulations on-demand. These workflows need to be able to monitor the simulations and, where possible, retarget radars to gather more data to initialize higher resolution models that can focus the predictions. This scenario is not possible now, but it is the goal of the NSF LEAD project. To address these problems we have built a service oriented architecture that allows us to dynamically schedule remote data analysis and computational experiments. The Grid of resources used include machines at Indiana, Alabama, NCSA, Oklahoma, UNC and Ucar/Unidata, and soon Teragrid. The users gateway to the system is a web portal and a set of desktop client tools. Five primary persistent services are used to manage the workflows: a metadata repository called MyLEAD that keeps track of each users work, a WS-Eventing based pub-sub notification system, a BPEL based workflow engine, a web service registry for soft-state management of services and the portal server. An application factory service is used by the portal to create transient instances of the data mining and simulation applications that are orchestrated with the BPEL workflows. As the workflows execute they publish status metadata via the notification system to the users MyLEAD space. The talk will present several open research challenges that are common to many e-Science efforts. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
